Here's a patch to add unknownin/unknownout support. I also poked around looking for places that assume UNKNOWN == TEXT. One of those was the "SET" type in pg_type.h, which was using textin/textout. This one I took care of in this patch. The other suspicious place was in string_to_dataum (which is defined in both selfuncs.c and indxpath.c). I wasn't too sure about those, so I left them be. SQL-language functions are now callable in ordinary fmgr contexts ... for example, an SQL function can be used in a functional index. (I make no promises about speed, but it'll work ;-).) Clean up and simplify handling of functions returning sets.

Restructure representation of join alias variables. An explicit JOIN now has an RTE of its own, and references to its outputs now are Vars referencing the JOIN RTE, rather than CASE-expressions. This allows reverse-listing in ruleutils.c to use the correct alias easily, rather than painfully reverse-engineering the alias namespace as it used to do. Also, nested FULL JOINs work correctly, because the result of the inner joins are simple Vars that the planner can cope with. This fixes a bug reported a couple times now, notably by Tatsuo on 18-Nov-01. The alias Vars are expanded into COALESCE expressions where needed at the very end of planning, rather than during parsing. Also, beginnings of support for showing plan qualifier expressions in EXPLAIN. There are probably still cases that need work. initdb forced due to change of stored-rule representation.

Revise aggregate functions per earlier discussions in pghackers. There's now only one transition value and transition function. NULL handling in aggregates is a lot cleaner. Also, use Numeric accumulators instead of integer accumulators for sum/avg on integer datatypes --- this avoids overflow at the cost of being a little slower. Implement VARIANCE() and STDDEV() aggregates in the standard backend. Also, enable new LIKE selectivity estimators by default. Unrelated change, but as long as I had to force initdb anyway...

In fact, given that btoidcmp() has been doing unsigned comparison for quite some time, it seems likely that we have index- corruption problems in 7.0 and before once the Oid counter goes past 2G. Fixing these operators is a necessary step before we can think about 8-byte Oid, too.

sum() on int2 and int4 columns now uses an int8, not numeric, accumulator for speed reasons; its result type also changes to int8. avg() on these datatypes now accumulates the running sum in int8 for speed; but we still deliver the final result as numeric, so that fractional accuracy is preserved. count() now counts and returns in int8, not int4. I am a little nervous about this possibly breaking users' code, but there didn't seem to be a strong sentiment for avoiding the problem. If we get complaints during beta, we can change count back to int4 and add a "count8" aggregate. For that matter, users can do it for themselves with a simple CREATE AGGREGATE command; the int4inc function is still present, so no C hacking is needed. Also added max() and min() aggregates for OID that do proper unsigned comparison, instead of piggybacking on int4 aggregates. initdb forced.

Reimplement parsing and storage of default expressions and constraint expressions in CREATE TABLE. There is no longer an emasculated expression syntax for these things; it's full a_expr for constraints, and b_expr for defaults (unfortunately the fact that NOT NULL is a part of the column constraint syntax causes a shift/reduce conflict if you try a_expr. Oh well --- at least parenthesized boolean expressions work now). Also, stored expression for a column default is not pre-coerced to the column type; we rely on transformInsertStatement to do that when the default is actually used. This means "f1 datetime default 'now'" behaves the way people usually expect it to. BTW, all the support code is now there to implement ALTER TABLE ADD CONSTRAINT and ALTER TABLE ADD COLUMN with a default value. I didn't actually teach ALTER TABLE to call it, but it wouldn't be much work.

Rule names are now unique per-relation, rather than unique globally. DROP RULE and COMMENT ON RULE syntax adds an 'ON tablename' clause, similar to TRIGGER syntaxes. To allow loading of existing pg_dump files containing COMMENT ON RULE, the COMMENT code will still accept the old syntax --- but only if the target rulename is unique across the whole database.

Change scoping of table and join refnames to conform to SQL92: a JOIN clause with an alias is a <subquery> and therefore hides table references appearing within it, according to the spec. This is the same as the preliminary patch I posted to pgsql-patches yesterday, plus some really grotty code in ruleutils.c to reverse-list a query tree with the correct alias name depending on context. I'd rather not have done that, but unless we want to force another initdb for 7.1, there's no other way for now.

Clean up bogosities in pg_opclass, pg_amop, pg_amproc. There are amproc entries now for int8 and network hash indexes. int24_ops and int42_ops are gone. pg_opclass no longer contains multiple entries claiming to be the default opclass for the same datatype. opr_sanity regress test extended to catch errors like these in the future.

Here's a patch to add unknownin/unknownout support. I also poked around looking for places that assume UNKNOWN == TEXT. One of those was the "SET" type in pg_type.h, which was using textin/textout. This one I took care of in this patch. The other suspicious place was in string_to_dataum (which is defined in both selfuncs.c and indxpath.c). I wasn't too sure about those, so I left them be. I am a little nervous about this possibly breaking users' code, but there didn't seem to be a strong sentiment for avoiding the problem. If we get complaints during beta, we can change count back to int4 and add a "count8" aggregate. For that matter, users can do it for themselves with a simple CREATE AGGREGATE command; the int4inc function is still present, so no C hacking is needed. Also added max() and min() aggregates for OID that do proper unsigned comparison, instead of piggybacking on int4 aggregates. initdb forced.

Avoid creating a TOAST table if we can prove that the maximum tuple length is < TOAST_TUPLE_THRESHOLD, even with toastable column types present. For example, CREATE TABLE foo (f1 int, f2 varchar(100)) does not require a toast table, even though varchar is a toastable type.

Added functions quote_ident(text) returns text quote_literal(text) returns text These are handy to build up properly quoted query strings for the new PL/pgSQL EXECUTE functionality to submit dynamic DDL statements. Jan
