Second phase of committing Rod Taylor's pg_depend/pg_constraint patch. pg_relcheck is gone; CHECK, UNIQUE, PRIMARY KEY, and FOREIGN KEY constraints all have real live entries in pg_constraint. pg_depend exists, and RESTRICT/CASCADE options work on most kinds of DROP; however, pg_depend is not yet very well populated with dependencies. (Most of the ones that are present at this point just replace formerly hardwired associations, such as the implicit drop of a relation's pg_type entry when the relation is dropped.) Need to add more logic to create dependency entries, improve pg_dump to dump constraints in place of indexes and triggers, and add some regression tests.

I've created a new shared catalog table pg_shdescription to store comments on cluster global objects like databases, tablespaces, and roles. It touches a lot of places, but not much in the way of big changes. The only design decision I made was to duplicate the query and manipulation functions rather than to try and have them handle both shared and local comments. I believe this is simpler for the code and not an issue for callers because they know what type of object they are dealing with. This has resulted in a shobj_description function analagous to obj_description and backend functions [Create/Delete]SharedComments mirroring the existing [Create/Delete]Comments functions. pg_shdescription.h goes into src/include/catalog/ Kris Jurka

Simplify build/install process for bki and description files. There's no reason for them to be copied into src/backend rather than being installed straight from the catalog subdirectory. This also avoids some peculiar behavior (bugs?) present in at least gmake 3.78.1: it won't always update the bki files in backend/ even when the ones in backend/catalog/ are newer.

Get rid of the need for manual maintenance of the initial contents of pg_attribute, by having genbki.pl derive the information from the various catalog header files. This greatly simplifies modification of the "bootstrapped" catalogs. This patch finally kills genbki.sh and Gen_fmgrtab.sh; we now rely entirely on Perl scripts for those build steps. To avoid creating a Perl build dependency where there was not one before, the output files generated by these scripts are now treated as distprep targets, ie, they will be built and shipped in tarballs. But you will need a reasonably modern Perl (probably at least 5.6) if you want to build from a CVS pull. The changes to the MSVC build process are untested, and may well break --- we'll soon find out from the buildfarm. John Naylor, based on ideas from Robert Haas and others

Clean up various to-do items associated with system indexes: pg_database now has unique indexes on oid and on datname. pg_shadow now has unique indexes on usename and on usesysid. pg_am now has unique index on oid. pg_opclass now has unique index on oid. pg_amproc now has unique index on amid+amopclaid+amprocnum. Remove pg_rewrite's unnecessary index on oid, delete unused RULEOID syscache. Remove index on pg_listener and associated syscache for performance reasons (caching rows that are certain to change before you need 'em again is rather pointless). Change pg_attrdef's nonunique index on adrelid into a unique index on adrelid+adnum. Fix various incorrect settings of pg_class.relisshared, make that the primary reference point for whether a relation is shared or not. IsSharedSystemRelationName() is now only consulted to initialize relisshared during initial creation of tables and indexes. In theory we might now support shared user relations, though it's not clear how one would get entries for them into pg_class &etc of multiple databases. Fix recently reported bug that pg_attribute rows created for an index all have the same OID. (Proof that non-unique OID doesn't matter unless it's actually used to do lookups ;-)) There's no need to treat pg_trigger, pg_attrdef, pg_relcheck as bootstrap relations. Convert them into plain system catalogs without hardwired entries in pg_class and friends. Unify global.bki and template1.bki into a single init script postgres.bki, since the alleged distinction between them was misleading and pointless. Not to mention that it didn't work for setting up indexes on shared system relations. Rationalize locking of pg_shadow, pg_group, pg_attrdef (no need to use AccessExclusiveLock where ExclusiveLock or even RowExclusiveLock will do). Also, hold locks until transaction commit where necessary.

Update autovacuum to use reloptions instead of a system catalog, for per-table overrides of parameters. This removes a whole class of problems related to misusing the catalog, and perhaps more importantly, gives us pg_dump support for the parameters. Based on a patch by Euler Taveira de Oliveira, heavily reworked by me.

Restructure operator classes to allow improved handling of cross-data-type cases. Operator classes now exist within "operator families". While most families are equivalent to a single class, related classes can be grouped into one family to represent the fact that they are semantically compatible. Cross-type operators are now naturally adjunct parts of a family, without having to wedge them into a particular opclass as we had done originally. This commit restructures the catalogs and cleans up enough of the fallout so that everything still works at least as well as before, but most of the work needed to actually improve the planner's behavior will come later. Also, there are not yet CREATE/DROP/ALTER OPERATOR FAMILY commands; the only way to create a new family right now is to allow CREATE OPERATOR CLASS to make one by default. I owe some more documentation work, too. But that can all be done in smaller pieces once this infrastructure is in place.

Syntax support and documentation for event triggers. They don't actually do anything yet; that will get fixed in a follow-on commit. But this gets the basic infrastructure in place, including CREATE/ALTER/DROP EVENT TRIGGER; support for COMMENT, SECURITY LABEL, and ALTER EXTENSION .. ADD/DROP EVENT TRIGGER; pg_dump and psql support; and documentation for the anticipated initial feature set. Dimitri Fontaine, with review and a bunch of additional hacking by me. Thom Brown extensively reviewed earlier versions of this patch set, but there's not a whole lot of that code left in this commit, as it turns out.

Make it possibly to specify GUC params per user and per database. Create a new catalog pg_db_role_setting where they are now stored, and better encapsulate the code that deals with settings into its realm. The old datconfig and rolconfig columns are removed. psql has gained a \drds command to display the settings. Backwards compatibility warning: while the backwards-compatible system views still have the config columns, they no longer completely represent the configuration for a user or database. Catalog version bumped.

Add make dependency so that postgres.bki is rebuilt in major version change Every time since the current rule for postgres.bki was put in place when we change the major version, people complain that their tests fail in strange ways. This is because the version number in postgres.bki is not updated, because it has no dependency for that. And you can't even force the rebuild manually if you don't happen to know which file has the problem. Fix that now before it will happen again. The only remaining problem with switching major versions, as far as the regression tests are concerned, is that contrib needs to be rebuilt. But that's easily invoked, and in any case the failure modes are more friendly if you forget that.

Remove maintainer-check target, fold into normal build make maintainer-check was obscure and rarely called in practice, and many breakages were missed. Fold everything that make maintainer-check used to do into the normal build. Specifically: - Call duplicate_oids when genbki.pl is called. - Check for tabs in SGML files when the documentation is built. - Run msgfmt with the -c option during the regular build. Add an additional configure check to see whether we are using the GNU version. (make maintainer-check probably used to fail with non-GNU msgfmt.) Keep maintainer-check as around as phony target for the time being in case anyone is calling it. But it won't do anything anymore.

Update of install-sh, mkinstalldirs, and associated configury Update install-sh to that from Autoconf 2.63, plus our Darwin-specific changes (which I simplified a bit). install-sh is now able to install multiple files in one run, so we could simplify our makefiles sometime. install-sh also now has a -d option to create directories, so we don't need mkinstalldirs anymore. Use AC_PROG_MKDIR_P in configure.in, so we can use mkdir -p when available instead of install-sh -d. For consistency with the rest of the world, the corresponding make variable has been renamed from $(mkinstalldirs) to $(MKDIR_P).
