pg_class has a relnamespace column. You can create and access tables in schemas other than the system namespace; however, there's no search path yet, and not all operations work yet on tables outside the system namespace.

Reimplement parsing and storage of default expressions and constraint expressions in CREATE TABLE. There is no longer an emasculated expression syntax for these things; it's full a_expr for constraints, and b_expr for defaults (unfortunately the fact that NOT NULL is a part of the column constraint syntax causes a shift/reduce conflict if you try a_expr. Oh well --- at least parenthesized boolean expressions work now). Also, stored expression for a column default is not pre-coerced to the column type; we rely on transformInsertStatement to do that when the default is actually used. This means "f1 datetime default 'now'" behaves the way people usually expect it to. BTW, all the support code is now there to implement ALTER TABLE ADD CONSTRAINT and ALTER TABLE ADD COLUMN with a default value. I didn't actually teach ALTER TABLE to call it, but it wouldn't be much work.

Enable CHECK constraints to be declared NOT VALID This means that they can initially be added to a large existing table without checking its initial contents, but new tuples must comply to them; a separate pass invoked by ALTER TABLE / VALIDATE can verify existing data and ensure it complies with the constraint, at which point it is marked validated and becomes a normal part of the table ecosystem. An non-validated CHECK constraint is ignored in the planner for constraint_exclusion purposes; when validated, cached plans are recomputed so that partitioning starts working right away. This patch also enables domains to have unvalidated CHECK constraints attached to them as well by way of ALTER DOMAIN / ADD CONSTRAINT / NOT VALID, which can later be validated with ALTER DOMAIN / VALIDATE CONSTRAINT. First phase of project to use fixed OIDs for all system catalogs and indexes. Extend the macros in include/catalog/*.h to carry the info about hand-assigned OIDs, and adjust the genbki script and bootstrap code to make the relations actually get those OIDs. Remove the small number of RelOid_pg_foo macros that we had in favor of a complete set named like the catname.h and indexing.h macros. Next phase will get rid of internal use of names for looking up catalogs and indexes; but this completes the changes forcing an initdb, so it looks like a good place to commit. Along the way, I made the shared relations (pg_database etc) not be 'bootstrap' relations any more, so as to reduce the number of hardwired entries and simplify changing those relations in future. I'm not sure whether they ever really needed to be handled as bootstrap relations, but it seems to work fine to not do so now.

Generalize concept of temporary relations to "relation persistence". This commit replaces pg_class.relistemp with pg_class.relpersistence; and also modifies the RangeVar node type to carry relpersistence rather than istemp. It also removes removes rd_istemp from RelationData and instead performs the correct computation based on relpersistence. For clarity, we add three new macros: RelationNeedsWAL(), RelationUsesLocalBuffers(), and RelationUsesTempNamespace(), so that we can clarify the purpose of each check that previous depended on rd_istemp. This is intended as infrastructure for the upcoming unlogged tables patch, as well as for future possible work on global temporary tables.

Remove misplaced sanity check from heap_create(). Even when allow_system_table_mods is not set, we allow creation of any type of SQL object in pg_catalog, except for relations. And you can get relations into pg_catalog, too, by initially creating them in some other schema and then moving them with ALTER .. SET SCHEMA. So this restriction, which prevents relations (only) from being created in pg_catalog directly, is fairly pointless. If we need a safety mechanism for this, it should be placed further upstream, so that it affects all SQL objects uniformly, and picks up both CREATE and SET SCHEMA. For now, just rip it out, per discussion with Tom Lane.

Extend the BKI infrastructure to allow system catalogs to be given hand-assigned rowtype OIDs, even when they are not "bootstrapped" catalogs that have handmade type rows in pg_type.h. Give pg_database such an OID. Restore the availability of C macros for the rowtype OIDs of the bootstrapped catalogs. (These macros are now in the individual catalogs' .h files, though, not in pg_type.h.) This commit doesn't do anything especially useful by itself, but it's necessary infrastructure for reverting some ill-considered changes in relcache.c.

Create a "relation mapping" infrastructure to support changing the relfilenodes of shared or nailed system catalogs. This has two key benefits: * The new CLUSTER-based VACUUM FULL can be applied safely to all catalogs. * We no longer have to use an unsafe reindex-in-place approach for reindexing shared catalogs. CLUSTER on nailed catalogs now works too, although I left it disabled on shared catalogs because the resulting pg_index.indisclustered update would only be visible in one database. Since reindexing shared system catalogs is now fully transactional and crash-safe, the former special cases in REINDEX behavior have been removed; shared catalogs are treated the same as non-shared. This commit does not do anything about the recently-discussed problem of deadlocks between VACUUM FULL/CLUSTER on a system catalog and other concurrent queries; will address that in a separate patch. As a stopgap, parallel_schedule has been tweaked to run vacuum.sql by itself, to avoid such failures during the regression tests.

Upgrade ALTER TABLE DROP COLUMN so that it can drop an OID column, and remove separate implementation of ALTER TABLE SET WITHOUT OIDS in favor of doing a regular DROP. Also, cause CREATE TABLE to account completely correctly for the inheritance status of the OID column. This fixes problems with dropping OID columns that have dependencies, as noted by Christopher Kings-Lynne, as well as making sure that you can't drop an OID column that was inherited from a parent.

Teach backend/nodes routines about new field in CreateTable struct. Add a regression test.

Reduce overhead for normal case with no options by allowing rd_options to be NULL. Fix some unmaintainably klugy code, including getting rid of Natts_pg_class_fixed at long last. Some stylistic cleanup too, and pay attention to keeping comments in sync with code. Documentation still needs work, though I did fix the omissions in catalogs.sgml and indexam.sgml.

Such adjustments are always per owning role, and can be restricted to objects created in particular schemas too. Rearrange order of operations in heap_drop_with_catalog and index_drop so that we close and flush the doomed relation's relcache entry before we start to delete the underlying catalog rows, rather than afterwards. For awhile yesterday I thought that an unexpected relcache entry rebuild partway through this sequence might explain the infrequent parallel regression failures we were chasing. It doesn't, mainly because there's no CommandCounterIncrement in the sequence and so the deletions aren't "really" done yet. But it sure seems like trouble waiting to happen.

Make TRUNCATE do truncate-in-place when processing a relation that was created or previously truncated in the current (sub)transaction. This is safe since if the (sub)transaction later rolls back, we'd just discard the rel's current physical file anyway. This avoids unreasonable growth in the number of transient files when a relation is repeatedly truncated. Per a performance gripe a couple weeks ago from Todd Cook.

Per recent discussion, this does not work because other backends can't reliably see tuples in a temp table and so cannot run the RI checks correctly. We already caught this problem for normal TRUNCATE, but the path used by ON COMMIT didn't check.

Code review for FILLFACTOR patch. Change WITH grammar as per earlier discussion (including making def_arg allow reserved words), add missed opt_definition for UNIQUE case. Put the reloptions support code in a less random place (I chose to make a new file access/common/reloptions.c). Eliminate header inclusion creep. Make the index options functions safely user-callable (seems like client apps might like to be able to test validity of options before trying to make an index). Reduce overhead for normal case with no options by allowing rd_options to be NULL. Fix some unmaintainably klugy code, including getting rid of Natts_pg_class_fixed at long last. Some stylistic cleanup too, and pay attention to keeping comments in sync with code. Documentation still needs work, though I did fix the omissions in catalogs.sgml and indexam.sgml.

Change the rules for inherited CHECK constraints to be essentially the same as those for inherited columns; that is, it's no longer allowed for a child table to not have a check constraint matching one that exists on a parent. This satisfies the principle of least surprise (rows selected from the parent will always appear to meet its check constraints) and eliminates some longstanding bogosity in pg_dump, which formerly had to guess about whether check constraints were really inherited or not. The implementation involves adding conislocal and coninhcount columns to pg_constraint (paralleling attislocal and attinhcount in pg_attribute) and refactoring various ALTER TABLE actions to be more like those for columns. Reimplement parsing and storage of default expressions and constraint expressions in CREATE TABLE. There is no longer an emasculated expression syntax for these things; it's full a_expr for constraints, and b_expr for defaults (unfortunately the fact that NOT NULL is a part of the column constraint syntax causes a shift/reduce conflict if you try a_expr. Oh well --- at least parenthesized boolean expressions work now). Also, stored expression for a column default is not pre-coerced to the column type; we rely on transformInsertStatement to do that when the default is actually used. This means "f1 datetime default 'now'" behaves the way people usually expect it to. BTW, all the support code is now there to implement ALTER TABLE ADD CONSTRAINT and ALTER TABLE ADD COLUMN with a default value. I didn't actually teach ALTER TABLE to call it, but it wouldn't be much work.

A default is implemented by rewriting the table with the new value stored in each row. * ALTER COLUMN TYPE. You can change a column's datatype to anything you want, so long as you can specify how to convert the old value. Rewrites the table. (Possible future improvement: optimize no-op conversions such as varchar(N) to varchar(N+1).) * Multiple ALTER actions in a single ALTER TABLE command. You can perform any number of column additions, type changes, and constraint additions with only one pass over the table contents. When converting a table to a view, remove its system columns. Views should not have any pg_attribute entries for system columns. However, we forgot to remove such entries when converting a table to a view. This could lead to crashes later on, if someone attempted to reference such a column, as reported by Kohei KaiGai. Patch in HEAD only. This bug has been there forever, but in the back branches we will have to defend against existing mis-converted views, so it doesn't seem worthwhile to change the conversion code too.

Rearrange order of operations in heap_drop_with_catalog and index_drop so that we close and flush the doomed relation's relcache entry before we start to delete the underlying catalog rows, rather than afterwards. For awhile yesterday I thought that an unexpected relcache entry rebuild partway through this sequence might explain the infrequent parallel regression failures we were chasing. It doesn't, mainly because there's no CommandCounterIncrement in the sequence and so the deletions aren't "really" done yet. But it sure seems like trouble waiting to happen.

Make OIDs optional, per discussions in pghackers. WITH OIDS is still the default, but OIDS are removed from many system catalogs that don't need them. Some interesting side effects: TOAST pointers are 20 bytes not 32 now; pg_description has a three-column key instead of one. Bugs fixed in passing: BINARY cursors work again; pg_class.relhaspkey has some usefulness; pg_dump dumps comments on indexes, rules, and triggers in a valid order. initdb forced.

Rewrite of planner statistics-gathering code. ANALYZE is now available as a separate statement (though it can still be invoked as part of VACUUM, too). pg_statistic redesigned to be more flexible about what statistics are stored. ANALYZE now collects a list of several of the most common values, not just one, plus a histogram (not just the min and max values). Random sampling is used to make the process reasonably fast even on very large tables. The number of values and histogram bins collected is now user-settable via an ALTER TABLE command. There is more still to do; the new stats are not being used everywhere they could be in the planner. But the remaining changes for this project should be localized, and the behavior is already better than before. A not-very-related change is that sorting now makes use of btree comparison routines if it can find one, rather than invoking '<' twice.

Create a "relation mapping" infrastructure to support changing the relfilenodes of shared or nailed system catalogs. This has two key benefits: * The new CLUSTER-based VACUUM FULL can be applied safely to all catalogs. * We no longer have to use an unsafe reindex-in-place approach for reindexing shared catalogs. CLUSTER on nailed catalogs now works too, although I left it disabled on shared catalogs because the resulting pg_index.indisclustered update would only be visible in one database. Since reindexing shared system catalogs is now fully transactional and crash-safe, the former special cases in REINDEX behavior have been removed; shared catalogs are treated the same as non-shared. This commit does not do anything about the recently-discussed problem of deadlocks between VACUUM FULL/CLUSTER on a system catalog and other concurrent queries; will address that in a separate patch. As a stopgap, parallel_schedule has been tweaked to run vacuum.sql by itself, to avoid such failures during the regression tests.

Prevent a rowtype from being included in itself. Eventually we might be able to allow that, but it's not clear how many places need to be fixed to prevent infinite recursion when there's a direct or indirect inclusion of a rowtype in itself. One such place is CheckAttributeType(), which will recurse to stack overflow in cases such as those exhibited in bug #5950 from Alex Perepelica. If we were sure it was the only such place, we could easily modify the code added by this patch to stop the recursion without a complaint ... but it probably isn't the only such place. Hence, throw error until such time as someone is excited enough about this type of usage to put work into making it safe. Back-patch as far as 8.3. 8.2 doesn't have the recursive call in CheckAttributeType in the first place, so I see no need to add code there in the absence of clear evidence of a problem elsewhere.
