Nathan Bossart 5497daf3aa Replace calls to pg_qsort() with the qsort() macro.
Calls to this function might give the impression that pg_qsort()
is somehow different than qsort(), when in fact there is a qsort()
macro in port.h that expands all in-tree uses to pg_qsort().

Daniel Gustafsson 5c7038d70b Refactor pipe_read_line to return the full line
Commit 5b2f4afffe refactored find_other_exec() and in the process
created pipe_read_line() into a static routine for reading a single
line of output, aimed at reading version numbers.  Commit a7e8ece41
later exposed it externally in order to read a postgresql.conf GUC
using "postgres -C ..".  Further, f06b1c598 also made use of it for
reading a version string much like find_other_exec().  The internal
variable remained "pgver", even when used for other purposes.

Since the function requires passing a buffer and its size, and at
most size - 1 bytes will be read via fgets(), there is a truncation
risk when using this for reading GUCs (like how pg_rewind does,
though the risk in this case is marginal).

To keep this as generic functionality for reading a line from a pipe,
this refactors pipe_read_line() into returning an allocated buffer
containing all of the line to remove the risk of silent truncation.

Thomas Munro 89333db963 Rename port/thread.c to port/user.c.
Historically this module dealt with thread-safety of system interfaces,
but now all that's left is wrapper code for user name and home directory
lookup.  Arguably the Windows variants of this logic could be moved in
here too, to justify its presence under port.  For now, just tidy up
some obsolete references to multi-threading, and give the file a
meaningful name.

Tom Lane b0d8f2d983 Add SHELL_ERROR and SHELL_EXIT_CODE magic variables to psql.
These are set after a \! command or a backtick substitution.
SHELL_ERROR is just "true" for error (nonzero exit status) or "false"
for success, while SHELL_EXIT_CODE records the actual exit status
following standard shell/system(3) conventions.

Robert Haas 1f0c4fa255 pg_basebackup: Fix cross-platform tablespace relocation.
Specifically, when pg_basebackup is invoked with -Tx=y, don't error
out if x could plausibly be an absolute path either on Windows or on
non-Windows systems. We don't know whether the remote system is
running the same OS as the local system, so it's not appropriate to
assume that our local rule about absolute pathnames is the same as
the rule on the remote system.

Patch by me, reviewed by Tom Lane, Andrew Dunstan, and
Davinder Singh.

Thomas Munro b6d8a60aba Restore pg_pread and friends.
Commits cf112c12 and a0dc8271 were a little too hasty in getting rid of
the pg_ prefixes where we use pread(), pwrite() and vectored variants.

We dropped support for ancient Unixes where we needed to use lseek() to
implement replacements for those, but it turns out that Windows also
changes the current position even when you pass in an offset to
ReadFile() and WriteFile() if the file handle is synchronous, despite
its documentation saying otherwise.

Switching to asynchronous file handles would fix that, but have other
complications.  For now let's just put back the pg_ prefix and add some
comments to highlight the non-standard side-effect, which we can now
describe as Windows-only.

Peter Geoghegan a601366a46 Harmonize more parameter names in bulk.
Make sure that function declarations use names that exactly match the
corresponding names from function definitions in optimizer, parser,
utility, libpq, and "commands" code, as well as in remaining library
code.  Do the same for all code related to frontend programs (with the
exception of pg_dump/pg_dumpall related code).

Like other recent commits that cleaned up function parameter names, this
commit was written with help from clang-tidy.  Later commits will handle
ecpg and pg_dump/pg_dumpall.

Tom Lane eacbe94ab1 Clean up minor inconsistencies in pg_attribute_printf() usage.
For some reason we'd never decorated pg_v*printf() with
pg_attribute_printf() annotations.  There is a convention for
how to label va_list-using printf functions (write zero for the
second argument), and we use that liberally elsewhere in the
code, but these core functions lacked it.  It's not clear how
much useful checking the compiler can do for calls of these,
but we might as well add the annotations.

Also, sync win32security.c's log_error() with our normal convention
that pg_attribute_printf must be attached to a function's declaration
not definition.  Apparently this file is only compiled with compilers
that aren't picky about that, but still it'd be better to be
consistent.

No back-patch since there's little reason to think we would catch
anything.

Tom Lane b66fbd8afe Use SIGNAL_ARGS consistently to declare signal handlers.
Various bits of code were declaring signal handlers manually,
using "int signum" or variants of that.  We evidently have no
platforms where that's actually wrong, but let's use our
SIGNAL_ARGS macro everywhere anyway.  If nothing else, it's
good for finding signal handlers easily.

No need for back-patch, since this is just cosmetic AFAICS.

Thomas Munro f558088285 Remove HAVE_UNIX_SOCKETS.
Since HAVE_UNIX_SOCKETS is now defined unconditionally, remove the macro
and drop a small amount of dead code.

The last known systems not to have them (as far as I know at least) were
QNX, which we de-supported years ago, and Windows, which now has them.

If a new OS ever shows up with the POSIX sockets API but without working
AF_UNIX, it'll presumably still be able to compile the code, and fail at
runtime with an unsupported address family error.  We might want to
consider adding a HINT that you should turn off the option to use it if
your network stack doesn't support it at that point, but it doesn't seem
worth making the relevant code conditional at compile time.

Also adjust a couple of places in the docs and comments that referred to
builds without Unix-domain sockets, since there aren't any.  Windows
still gets a special mention in those places, though, because we don't
try to use them by default there yet.

Thomas Munro 077bf2f275 Remove configure probes for sys/un.h and struct sockaddr_un.
<sys/un.h> is in SUSv3 and every targeted Unix has it.  Some Windows
tool chains may still lack the approximately equivalent header
<afunix.h>, so we already defined struct sockaddr_un ourselves on that
OS for now.  To harmonize things a bit, move our definition into a new
header src/include/port/win32/sys/un.h.

HAVE_UNIX_SOCKETS is now defined unconditionally.  We migh remove that
in a separate commit, pending discussion.

Thomas Munro cbf4403134 Simplify replacement code for strtof.
strtof() is in C99 and all targeted systems have it.  We can remove the
configure probe and some dead code, but we still need replacement code
for a couple of systems that have known buggy implementations selected
via platform template.

Andres Freund 922a8fa098 Simplify gettimeofday() fallback logic.
There's no known supported system needing 1 argument gettimeofday()
support. The test for it was added a long time ago (92c6bf9775). Remove.

Until now we tested whether a gettimeofday() fallback is needed when
targetting windows. Which lead to the odd result that HAVE_GETTIMEOFDAY only
being defined when targetting MinGW (which has gettimeofday() since at least
2007). As the fallback is specific to msvc, remove the configure code and
rename src/port/gettimeofday.c to src/port/win32gettimeofday.c.

While at it, also remove the definition of struct timezone, a forward
declaration of the struct is sufficient.

Thomas Munro 5fc88c5d53 Replace pgwin32_is_junction() with lstat().
Now that lstat() reports junction points with S_IFLNK/S_ISLINK(), and
unlink() can unlink them, there is no need for conditional code for
Windows in a few places.  That was expressed by testing for WIN32 or
S_ISLNK, which we can now constant-fold.

The coding around pgwin32_is_junction() was a bit suspect anyway, as we
never checked for errors, and we also know that errors can be spuriously
reported because of transient sharing violations on this OS.  The
lstat()-based code has handling for that.

This also reverts 4fc6b6ee on master only.  That was done because
lstat() didn't previously work for symlinks (junction points), but now
it does.

Thomas Munro cf112c1220 Remove dead pread and pwrite replacement code.
pread() and pwrite() are in SUSv2, and all targeted Unix systems have
them.

Previously, we defined pg_pread and pg_pwrite to emulate these function
with lseek() on old Unixen.  The names with a pg_ prefix were a reminder
of a portability hazard: they might change the current file position.
That hazard is gone, so we can drop the prefixes.

Since the remaining replacement code is Windows-only, move it into
src/port/win32p{read,write}.c, and move the declarations into
src/include/port/win32_port.h.

No need for vestigial HAVE_PREAD, HAVE_PWRITE macros as they were only
used for declarations in port.h which have now moved into win32_port.h.

Thomas Munro 71f5dc6dfb Remove dead setenv, unsetenv replacement code.
setenv() and unsetenv() are in SUSv3 and targeted Unix systems have
them.  We still need special code for these on Windows, but that doesn't
require a configure probe.

This marks the first time we require a SUSv3 (POSIX.1-2001) facility
(rather than SUSv2).  The replacement code removed here was not needed
on any targeted system or any known non-EOL'd Unix system, and was
therefore dead and untested.

No need for vestigial HAVE_SETENV and HAVE_UNSETENV macros, because we
provide a replacement for Windows, and we didn't previously test the
macros.

Thomas Munro b79ec732d2 Remove configure probes for poll and poll.h.
poll() and <poll.h> are in SUSv2 and all targeted Unix systems have
them.

Retain HAVE_POLL and HAVE_POLL_H macros for readability.  There's an
error in latch.c that is now unreachable (since we always have one of
WIN32 or HAVE_POLL defined), but that falls out of a decision to keep
using defined(HAVE_POLL) instead of !defined(WIN32) to guard the poll()
code.

Thomas Munro 5963c9a154 Remove configure probe for link.
link() is in SUSv2 and all targeted Unix systems have it.  We have
replacement code for Windows that doesn't require a configure probe.
Since only Windows needs it, rename src/port/link.c to win32link.c like
other similar things.

There is no need for a vestigial HAVE_LINK macro, because we expect all
Unix and, with our replacement function, Windows systems to have it, so
we didn't have any tests around link() usage.

Thomas Munro 2b1f580ee2 Remove configure probes for symlink/readlink, and dead code.
symlink() and readlink() are in SUSv2 and all targeted Unix systems have
them.  We have partial emulation on Windows.  Code that raised runtime
errors on systems without it has been dead for years, so we can remove
that and also references to such systems in the documentation.

Define HAVE_READLINK and HAVE_SYMLINK macros on Unix.  Our Windows
replacement functions based on junction points can't be used for
relative paths or for non-directories, so the macros can be used to
check for full symlink support.  The places that deal with tablespaces
can just use symlink functions without checking the macros.  (If they
did check the macros, they'd need to provide an #else branch with a
runtime or compile time error, and it'd be dead code.)

Thomas Munro adeef67834 Remove configure probe for setsid.
setsid() is in SUSv2 and all targeted Unix systems have it.  Retain a
HAVE_SETSID macro, defined on Unix only.  That's easier to understand
than !defined(WIN32), for the optional code it governs.

Thomas Munro bdb657edd6 Remove configure probe and related tests for getrlimit.
getrlimit() is in SUSv2 and all targeted systems have it.

Windows doesn't have it.  We could just use #ifndef WIN32, but for a
little more explanation about why we're making things conditional, let's
retain the HAVE_GETRLIMIT macro.  It's defined in port.h for Unix systems.

On systems that have it, it's not necessary to test for RLIMIT_CORE,
RLIMIT_STACK or RLIMIT_NOFILE macros, since SUSv2 requires those and all
targeted systems have them.  Also remove references to a pre-historic
alternative spelling of RLIMIT_NOFILE, and coding that seemed to believe
that Cygwin didn't have it.

Thomas Munro ca1e85513e Remove configure probe for dlopen, and refactor.
dlopen() is in SUSv2 and all targeted Unix systems have it.  We still
need replacement functions for Windows, but we don't need a configure
probe for that.

Since it's no longer needed by other operating systems, rename dlopen.c
to win32dlopen.c and move the declarations into win32_port.h.

Likewise, the macros RTLD_NOW and RTLD_GLOBAL now only need to be
defined on Windows, since all targeted Unix systems have 'em.

Thomas Munro 4f1f5a7f85 Remove fls(), use pg_leftmost_one_pos32() instead.
Commit 4f658dc8 provided the traditional BSD fls() function in
src/port/fls.c so it could be used in several places.  Later we added a
bunch of similar facilities in pg_bitutils.h, based on compiler
builtins that map to hardware instructions.  It's a bit confusing to
have both 1-based and 0-based variants of this operation in use in
different parts of the tree, and neither is blessed by a standard.
Let's drop fls.c and the configure probe, and reuse the newer code.

Tom Lane e64cdab003 Invent qsort_interruptible().
Justin Pryzby reported that some scenarios could cause gathering
of extended statistics to spend many seconds in an un-cancelable
qsort() operation.  To fix, invent qsort_interruptible(), which is
just like qsort_arg() except that it will also do CHECK_FOR_INTERRUPTS
every so often.  This bloats the backend by a couple of kB, which
seems like a good investment.  (We considered just enabling
CHECK_FOR_INTERRUPTS in the existing qsort and qsort_arg functions,
but there are some callers for which that'd demonstrably be unsafe.
Opt-in seems like a better way.)

For now, just apply qsort_interruptible() in statistics collection.
There's probably more places where it could be useful, but we can
always change other call sites as we find problems.

Back-patch to v14.  Before that we didn't have extended stats on
expressions, so that the problem was less severe.  Also, this patch
depends on the sort_template infrastructure introduced in v14.

Tom Lane 98e93a1fc9 Clean up messy API for src/port/thread.c.
The point of this patch is to reduce inclusion spam by not needing
to #include <netdb.h> or <pwd.h> in port.h (which is read by every
compile in our tree).  To do that, we must remove port.h's
declarations of pqGetpwuid and pqGethostbyname.

pqGethostbyname is only used, and is only ever likely to be used,
in src/port/getaddrinfo.c --- which isn't even built on most
platforms, making pqGethostbyname dead code for most people.
Hence, deal with that by just moving it into getaddrinfo.c.

To clean up pqGetpwuid, invent a couple of simple wrapper
functions with less-messy APIs.  This allows removing some
duplicate error-handling code, too.

In passing, remove thread.c from the MSVC build, since it
contains nothing we use on Windows.

Thomas Munro f3e78069db Make EXEC_BACKEND more convenient on Linux and FreeBSD.
Try to disable ASLR when building in EXEC_BACKEND mode, to avoid random
memory mapping failures while testing.  For developer use only, no
effect on regular builds.

Thomas Munro e2f0f8ed25 Check for STATUS_DELETE_PENDING on Windows.
1.  Update our open() wrapper to check for NT's STATUS_DELETE_PENDING
and translate it to Unix-like errors.  This is done with
RtlGetLastNtStatus(), which is dynamically loaded from ntdll.  A new
file win32ntdll.c centralizes lookup of NT functions, in case we decide
to add more in the future.

2.  Remove non-working code that was trying to do something similar for
stat(), and just reuse the open() wrapper code.  As a side effect,
stat() also gains resilience against "sharing violation" errors.

3.  Since stat() is used very early in process startup, remove the
requirement that the Win32 signal event has been created before
pgwin32_open_handle() is reached.  Instead, teach pg_usleep() to fall
back to a non-interruptible sleep if reached before the signal event is
available.

This could be back-patched, but for now it's in master only.  The
problem has apparently been with us for a long time and generated only a
few complaints.  Proposed patches trigger it more often, which led to
this investigation and fix.

Tom Lane 3804539e48 Replace random(), pg_erand48(), etc with a better PRNG API and algorithm.
Standardize on xoroshiro128** as our basic PRNG algorithm, eliminating
a bunch of platform dependencies as well as fundamentally-obsolete PRNG
code.  In addition, this API replacement will ease replacing the
algorithm again in future, should that become necessary.

xoroshiro128** is a few percent slower than the drand48 family,
but it can produce full-width 64-bit random values not only 48-bit,
and it should be much more trustworthy.  It's likely to be noticeably
faster than the platform's random(), depending on which platform you
are thinking about; and we can have non-global state vectors easily,
unlike with random().  It is not cryptographically strong, but neither
are the functions it replaces.

Tom Lane 01ec41a5fe Fall back to unsigned int, not int, for socklen_t.
It's a coin toss which of these is a better default assumption.
However, of the machines we have in the buildfarm, the only ones
relying on the fallback socklen_t definition are ancient HPUX,
and on that platform unsigned int is the right choice.  Minor
tweak to ee3a1a5b6.

Peter Eisentraut ee3a1a5b63 Remove check for accept() argument types
This check was used to accommodate a staggering variety in particular
in the type of the third argument of accept().  This is no longer of
concern on currently supported systems.  We can just use socklen_t in
the code and put in a simple check that substitutes int for socklen_t
if it's missing, to cover the few stragglers.

Tom Lane b484ddf4d2 Treat ETIMEDOUT as indicating a non-recoverable connection failure.
Add ETIMEDOUT to ALL_CONNECTION_FAILURE_ERRNOS' list of "errnos that
identify hard failure of a previously-established network connection".
While one could imagine that this is sometimes recoverable, the same
could be said of other entries such as ENETDOWN.

In support of this, handle ETIMEDOUT on par with other socket errors
in relevant infrastructure, such as TranslateSocketError().
(I made a couple of cosmetic adjustments in TranslateSocketError(),
too.)  The code now assumes that ETIMEDOUT is defined everywhere,
which it should be given that POSIX has required it since SUSv2.

Perhaps this should be back-patched, but I'm hesitant to do so given
the lack of previous complaints, and the hazard that there's a small
ABI break on Windows from redefining the symbol.  Even if we decide
to do that, it'd be prudent to let this bake awhile in HEAD first.

Peter Eisentraut f06b1c5982 pg_upgrade: Check version of target cluster binaries
This expands the binary validation in pg_upgrade with a version
check per binary to ensure that the target cluster installation
only contains binaries from the target version.

In order to reduce duplication, validate_exec is exported from
port.h and the local copy in pg_upgrade is removed.

Thomas Munro 13a021f3e8 Provide pg_preadv() and pg_pwritev().
Provide synchronous vectored file I/O routines.  These map to preadv()
and pwritev(), with fallback implementations for systems that don't have
them.  Also provide a wrapper pg_pwritev_with_retry() that automatically
retries on short writes.

Tom Lane 7ca37fb040 Use setenv() in preference to putenv().
Since at least 2001 we've used putenv() and avoided setenv(), on the
grounds that the latter was unportable and not in POSIX.  However,
POSIX added it that same year, and by now the situation has reversed:
setenv() is probably more portable than putenv(), since POSIX now
treats the latter as not being a core function.  And setenv() has
cleaner semantics too.  So, let's reverse that old policy.

This commit adds a simple src/port/ implementation of setenv() for
any stragglers (we have one in the buildfarm, but I'd not be surprised
if that code is never used in the field).  More importantly, extend
win32env.c to also support setenv().  Then, replace usages of putenv()
with setenv(), and get rid of some ad-hoc implementations of setenv()
wannabees.

Also, adjust our src/port/ implementation of unsetenv() to follow the
POSIX spec that it returns an error indicator, rather than returning
void as per the ancient BSD convention.  I don't feel a need to make
all the call sites check for errors, but the portability stub ought
to match real-world practice.

Magnus Hagander 5ee180a394 Add pg_strong_random_init function to initialize random number generator
Currently only OpenSSL requires this initialization, but in the future
other SSL implementations are likely to need it as well. Abstracting
this functionality out into a separate function makes this cleaner and
more clear, and also removes the dependency on OpenSSL headers from
fork_process.c.

OpenSSL is special in that we need to initialize this random number
generator even if we're not going to use it directly, until we drop
support for everything prior to OpenSSL 1.1.1. (And of course also if we
actually use it). All other implementations are left empty at this time,
but more are expected to be added in the future.

Tom Lane fe27009cbb Recognize network-failure errnos as indicating hard connection loss.
Up to now, only ECONNRESET (and EPIPE, in most but not quite all places)
received special treatment in our error handling logic.  This patch
changes things so that related error codes such as ECONNABORTED are
also recognized as indicating that the connection's dead and unlikely
to come back.

We continue to think, however, that only ECONNRESET and EPIPE should be
reported as probable server crashes; the other cases indicate network
connectivity problems but prove little about the server's state.  Thus,
there's no change in the error message texts that are output for such
cases.  The key practical effect is that errcode_for_socket_access()
will report ERRCODE_CONNECTION_FAILURE rather than
ERRCODE_INTERNAL_ERROR for a network failure.  It's expected that this
will fix buildfarm member lorikeet's failures since commit 32a9c0bdf,
as that seems to be due to not treating ECONNABORTED equivalently to
ECONNRESET.

The set of errnos treated this way now includes ECONNABORTED, EHOSTDOWN,
EHOSTUNREACH, ENETDOWN, ENETRESET, and ENETUNREACH.  Several of these
were second-class citizens in terms of their handling in places like
get_errno_symbol(), so upgrade the infrastructure where necessary.

As committed, this patch assumes that all these symbols are defined
everywhere.  POSIX specifies all of them except EHOSTDOWN, but that
seems to exist on all platforms of interest; we'll see what the
buildfarm says about that.

Probably this should be back-patched, but let's see what the buildfarm
thinks of it first.

Tom Lane 67a472d71c Remove arbitrary restrictions on password length.
This patch started out with the goal of harmonizing various arbitrary
limits on password length, but after awhile a better idea emerged:
let's just get rid of those fixed limits.

recv_password_packet() has an arbitrary limit on the packet size,
which we don't really need, so just drop it.  (Note that this doesn't
really affect anything for MD5 or SCRAM password verification, since
those will hash the user's password to something shorter anyway.
It does matter for auth methods that require a cleartext password.)

Likewise remove the arbitrary error condition in pg_saslprep().

The remaining limits are mostly in client-side code that prompts
for passwords.  To improve those, refactor simple_prompt() so that
it allocates its own result buffer that can be made as big as
necessary.  Actually, it proves best to make a separate routine
pg_get_line() that has essentially the semantics of fgets(), except
that it allocates a suitable result buffer and hence will never
return a truncated line.  (pg_get_line has a lot of potential
applications to replace randomly-sized fgets buffers elsewhere,
but I'll leave that for another patch.)

I built pg_get_line() atop stringinfo.c, which requires moving
that code to src/common/; but that seems fine since it was a poor
fit for src/port/ anyway.

This patch is mostly mine, but it owes a good deal to Nathan Bossart
who pressed for a solution to the password length problem and
created a predecessor patch.  Also thanks to Peter Eisentraut and
Stephen Frost for ideas and discussion.

Tom Lane 5cbfce562f Initial pgindent and pgperltidy run for v13.
Includes some manual cleanup of places that pgindent messed up,
most of which weren't per project style anyway.

Notably, it seems some people didn't absorb the style rules of
commit c9d297751, because there were a bunch of new occurrences
of function calls with a newline just after the left paren, all
with faulty expectations about how the rest of the call would get
indented.

Michael Paquier a7e8ece41c Add -c/--restore-target-wal to pg_rewind
pg_rewind needs to copy from the source cluster to the target cluster a
set of relation blocks changed from the previous checkpoint where WAL
forked up to the end of WAL on the target.  Building this list of
relation blocks requires a range of WAL segments that may not be present
anymore on the target's pg_wal, causing pg_rewind to fail.  It is
possible to work around this issue by copying manually the WAL segments
needed but this may lead to some extra and actually useless work.

This commit introduces a new option allowing pg_rewind to use a
restore_command while doing the rewind by grabbing the parameter value
of restore_command from the target cluster configuration.  This allows
the rewind operation to be more reliable, so as only the WAL segments
needed by the rewind are restored from the archives.

In order to be able to do that, a new routine is added to src/common/ to
allow frontend tools to restore files from archives using an
already-built restore command.  This version is more simple than the
backend equivalent as there is no need to handle the non-recovery case.
