Peter Eisentraut 5dd41f3574 Remove maintainer-check target, fold into normal build
make maintainer-check was obscure and rarely called in practice, and
many breakages were missed. Fold everything that make maintainer-check
used to do into the normal build. Specifically:

- Call duplicate_oids when genbki.pl is called.

- Check for tabs in SGML files when the documentation is built.

- Run msgfmt with the -c option during the regular build. Add an
additional configure check to see whether we are using the GNU
version. (make maintainer-check probably used to fail with non-GNU
  msgfmt.)

Keep maintainer-check as around as phony target for the time being in
case anyone is calling it. But it won't do anything anymore.

Peter Eisentraut 9bf8603c7a Call check_keywords.pl in maintainer-check
For that purpose, have check_keywords.pl print errors to stderr and
return a useful exit status.

Peter Eisentraut c667cc24e8 Workaround for recursive make breakage
Changing a file two directory levels deep under src/backend/ would not
cause the postgres binary to be rebuilt. This change fixes it, but no
one knows why.

Peter Eisentraut e3094fd3a8 Re-add recursive coverage target in src/backend/
This was lost during the recent recursive make change.

Peter Eisentraut 19e231bbda Improved parallel make support
Replace for loops in makefiles with proper dependencies. Parallel
make can now span across directories. Also, make -k and make -q work
properly.

GNU make 3.80 or newer is now required.

Peter Eisentraut 7798147a76 Expand test coverage support to entire tree
Test coverage support now covers the entire source tree, including
contrib, instead of just src/backend. In a related but independent
development, the commands make coverage and make coverage-html can be run
in any directory.

This turned out to be much easier than feared. Besides a few ad hoc fixes
to pass the make target down the tree, change all affected makefiles to
list their directories in the SUBDIRS variable, changed from variants like
DIRS and WANTED_DIRS. MSVC build fix was attempted as well.

Peter Eisentraut e7115a224a We need to rebuild objfiles.txt when one of the subdirectories' objfiles.txt
changed in case a new file got added.

and simpler, too.

Peter Eisentraut b8eef28353 Change expand_subsys function so that it preserves the relative order of
the files passed as argument. This is desirable so that the dtrace rule
in src/backend/Makefile works.

Peter Eisentraut 3690019da8 We don't need to rebuild objfiles.txt every time an object file changes.
So only rebuild when a makefile changes (which presumably defines the
file list somewhere), and only touch the file if an object changed. The
touch is necessary so the parent make knows something changed and
ultimately rebuilds postgres.

Peter Eisentraut 9956ddc191 Link postgres from all object files at once, to avoid the error-prone
SUBSYS.o step and allow for better optimization by the linker.

Instead of partial linking into SUBSYS.o, the list of object files is
assembled in objfiles.txt files that are expanded when the final
linking is done.

Because we are not yet sure how long command lines different platforms
can handle, the old way of linking is still available, by defining the
make variable PARTIAL_LINKING (e.g., make all PARTIAL_LINKING=1). If
we determine that this is necessary for some platforms, then we will
document this in a more prominent place.
