be used instead of the normal exclusive lock, and make WAL redo functions
responsible for calling RestoreBkpBlocks(). They know better what kind of a
lock they need.
At the moment, this just moves things around with no functional change, but
makes the hot standby patch that's under review cleaner.
and heap_deformtuple in favor of the newer functions heap_form_tuple et al
(which do the same things but use bool control flags instead of arbitrary
char values). Eliminate the former duplicate coding of these functions,
reducing the deprecated functions to mere wrappers around the newer ones.
We can't get rid of them entirely because add-on modules probably still
contain many instances of the old coding style.

to process any pending unlinks for the source database.
Before, if you dropped a relation in the template database just before
CREATE DATABASE, and a checkpoint happened during copydir(), the checkpoint
might delete a file that we're just about to copy, causing lstat() in
copydir() to fail with ENOENT.
Backpatch to 8.3, where the pending unlinks were introduced.

free space information is stored in a dedicated FSM relation fork, with each
relation (except for hash indexes; they don't use FSM).
This eliminates the max_fsm_relations and max_fsm_pages GUC options; remove any
trace of them from the backend, initdb, and documentation.
Rewrite contrib/pg_freespacemap to match the new FSM implementation. Also
introduce a new variant of the get_raw_page(regclass, int4, int4) function in
contrib/pageinspect that let's you to return pages from any relation fork, and
a new fsm_page_contents() function to inspect the new FSM pages.
ctype are now more like encoding, stored in new datcollate and datctype
columns in pg_database.
This is a stripped-down version of Radek Strnad's patch, with further
changes by me.
or target database is being accessed by other users, it tells you whether
the "other users" are live sessions or uncommitted prepared transactions.
(Indeed, it tells you exactly how many of each, but that's mostly just
because it was easy to do so.) This should help forestall the gotcha of
not realizing that a prepared transaction is what's blocking the command.

unnecessary #include lines in it. Also, move some tuple routine prototypes and
macros to htup.h, which allows removal of heapam.h inclusion from some .c
files.
For this to work, a new header file access/sysattr.h needed to be created,
initially containing attribute numbers of system columns, for pg_dump usage.
While at it, make contrib ltree, intarray and hstore header files more
consistent with our header style.
file; the idea is that we should clean up as much as we can, even if there's
some problem removing one file. Make the error messages a bit less misleading,
too. In passing, const-ify function arguments.
place to prevent reusing relation OIDs before next checkpoint, and DROP
DATABASE. First, if a database was dropped, bgwriter would still try to unlink
the files that the rmtree() call by the DROP DATABASE command has already
deleted, or is just about to delete. Second, if a database is dropped, and
another database is created with the same OID, bgwriter would in the worst
case delete a relation in the new database that happened to get the same OID
as a dropped relation in the old database.
To fix these race conditions:
- make rmtree() ignore ENOENT errors. This fixes the 1st race condition.
- make ForgetDatabaseFsyncRequests forget unlink requests as well.
- force checkpoint on in dropdb on all platforms
Since ForgetDatabaseFsyncRequests() is asynchronous, the 2nd change isn't
enough on its own to fix the problem of dropping and creating a database with
same OID, but forcing a checkpoint on DROP DATABASE makes it sufficient.
Per Tom Lane's bug report and proposal. Backpatch to 8.3.
corrupted. (Neither is very important if SIGTERM is used to shut down the
whole database cluster together, but there's a problem if someone tries to
SIGTERM individual backends.) To do this, introduce new infrastructure
macros PG_ENSURE_ERROR_CLEANUP/PG_END_ENSURE_ERROR_CLEANUP that take care
of transiently pushing an on_shmem_exit cleanup hook. Also use this method
for createdb cleanup --- that wasn't a shared-memory-corruption problem,
but SIGTERM abort of createdb could leave orphaned files lying around.
Backpatch as far as 8.2. The shmem corruption cases don't exist in 8.1,
and the createdb usage doesn't seem important enough to risk backpatching
further.
renumbering of encoding IDs done between 8.2 and 8.3 turns out to break 8.2
initdb and psql if they are run with an 8.3beta1 libpq.so. For the moment
we can rearrange the order of enum pg_enc to keep the same number for
everything except PG_JOHAB, which isn't a problem since there are no direct
references to it in the 8.2 programs anyway. (This does force initdb
unfortunately.)
Going forward, we want to fix things so that encoding IDs can be changed
without an ABI break, and this commit includes the changes needed to allow
libpq's encoding IDs to be treated as fully independent of the backend's.
The main issue is that libpq clients should not include pg_wchar.h or
otherwise assume they know the specific values of libpq's encoding IDs,
since they might encounter version skew between pg_wchar.h and the libpq.so
they are using. To fix, have libpq officially export functions needed for
encoding name<=>ID conversion and validity checking; it was doing this
anyway unofficially.
It's still the case that we can't renumber backend encoding IDs until the
next bump in libpq's major version number, since doing so will break the
8.2-era client programs. However the code is now prepared to avoid this
type of problem in future.
Note that initdb is no longer a libpq client: we just pull in the two
source files we need directly. The patch also fixes a few places that
were being sloppy about checking for an unrecognized encoding name.
on pg_global even to superusers, and replace it with checks in various
other places to complain about invalid uses of pg_global. This ends
up being a bit more code but it allows a more specific error message
to be given, and it un-breaks pg_tablespace_size() on pg_global.

databases with encodings that are incompatible with the server's LC_CTYPE
locale, when we can determine that (which we can on most modern platforms,
I believe). C/POSIX locale is compatible with all encodings, of course,
so there is still some usefulness to CREATE DATABASE's ENCODING option,
but this will insulate us against all sorts of recurring complaints
caused by mismatched settings.
I moved initdb's existing LC_CTYPE-to-encoding mapping knowledge into
a new src/port/ file so it could be shared by CREATE DATABASE.
(Actually, it works as a plain statement too, but I didn't document that
because it seems a bit useless.) Unify VariableResetStmt with
VariableSetStmt, and clean up some ancient cruft in the representation of
same.
before reporting a transaction committed. Data consistency is still
guaranteed (unlike setting fsync = off), but a crash may lose the effects
of the last few transactions. Patch by Simon, some editorialization by Tom.
over a fairly long period of time, rather than being spat out in a burst.
This happens only for background checkpoints carried out by the bgwriter;
other cases, such as a shutdown checkpoint, are still done at full speed.
Remove the "all buffers" scan in the bgwriter, and associated stats
infrastructure, since this seems no longer very useful when the checkpoint
itself is properly throttled.

will exit before failing because of conflicting DB usage. Per discussion,
this seems a good idea to help mask the fact that backend exit takes nonzero
time. Remove a couple of thereby-obsoleted sleeps in contrib and PL
regression test sequences.
module and teach PREPARE and protocol-level prepared statements to use it.
In service of this, rearrange utility-statement processing so that parse
analysis does not assume table schemas can't change before execution for
utility statements (necessary because we don't attempt to re-acquire locks
for utility statements when reusing a stored plan). This requires some
refactoring of the ProcessUtility API, but it ends up cleaner anyway,
for instance we can get rid of the QueryContext global.
Still to do: fix up SPI and related code to use the plan cache; I'm tempted to
try to make SQL functions use it too. Also, there are at least some aspects
of system state that we want to ensure remain the same during a replan as in
the original processing; search_path certainly ought to behave that way for
instance, and perhaps there are others.
entries for the victim database go away sooner rather than later. We already
did the equivalent thing at the per-relation level, not sure why it's not
been done for whole databases. With this change, pgstat_vacuum_tabstat
should usually not find anything to do; though we still need it as a backstop
in case DROPDB or TABPURGE messages get lost under load.
Standard English uses "may", "can", and "might" in different ways:
may - permission, "You may borrow my rake."
can - ability, "I can lift that log."
might - possibility, "It might rain today."
Unfortunately, in conversational English, their use is often mixed, as
in, "You may use this variable to do X", when in fact, "can" is a better
choice. Similarly, "It may crash" is better stated, "It might crash".
accessing it, like DROP DATABASE. This allows the regression tests to pass
with autovacuum enabled, which open the gates for finally enabling autovacuum
by default.
in PITR scenarios. We now WAL-log the replacement of old XIDs with
FrozenTransactionId, so that such replacement is guaranteed to propagate to
PITR slave databases. Also, rather than relying on hint-bit updates to be
preserved, pg_clog is not truncated until all instances of an XID are known to
have been replaced by FrozenTransactionId. Add new GUC variables and
pg_autovacuum columns to allow management of the freezing policy, so that
users can trade off the size of pg_clog against the amount of freezing work
done. Revise the already-existing code that forces autovacuum of tables
approaching the wraparound point to make it more bulletproof; also, revise the
autovacuum logic so that anti-wraparound vacuuming is done per-table rather
than per-database. initdb forced because of changes in pg_class, pg_database,
and pg_autovacuum catalogs. Heikki Linnakangas, Simon Riggs, and Tom Lane.
that conflict with the OID that we want to use for the new database.
This avoids the risk of trying to remove files that maybe we shouldn't
remove. Per gripe from Jon Lapham and subsequent discussion of 27-Sep.
To this end, add a couple of columns to pg_class, relminxid and relvacuumxid,
based on which we calculate the pg_database columns after each vacuum.
We now force all databases to be vacuumed, even template ones. A backend
noticing too old a database (meaning pg_database.datminxid is in danger of
falling behind Xid wraparound) will signal the postmaster, which in turn will
start an autovacuum iteration to process the offending database. In principle
this is only there to cope with frozen (non-connectable) databases without
forcing users to set them to connectable, but it could force regular user
database to go through a database-wide vacuum at any time. Maybe we should
warn users about this somehow. Of course the real solution will be to use
autovacuum all the time ;-)
There are some additional improvements we could have in this area: for example
the vacuum code could be smarter about not updating pg_database for each table
when called by autovacuum, and do it only once the whole autovacuum iteration
is done.
I updated the system catalogs documentation, but I didn't modify the
maintenance section. Also having some regression tests for this would be nice
but it's not really a very straightforward thing to do.
Catalog version bumped due to system catalog changes.
The former approach used ExclusiveLock on pg_database, which being a
cluster-wide lock meant only one of these operations could proceed at
a time; worse, it also blocked all incoming connections in ReverifyMyDatabase.
Now that we have LockSharedObject(), we can use locks of different types
applied to databases considered as objects. This allows much more
flexible management of the interlocking: two CREATE DATABASEs need not
block each other, and need not block connections except to the template
database being used. Similarly DROP DATABASE doesn't block unrelated
operations. The locking used in flatfiles.c is also much narrower in
scope than before. Per recent proposal.
in various places that were previously doing ad hoc pg_database searches.
This may speed up database-related privilege checks a little bit, but
the main motivation is to eliminate the performance reason for having
ReverifyMyDatabase do such a lot of stuff (viz, avoiding repeat scans
of pg_database during backend startup). The locking reason for having
that routine is about to go away, and it'd be good to have the option
to break it up.
This commit doesn't make much functional change, but it does eliminate some
duplicated code --- for instance, PageIsNew tests are now done inside
XLogReadBuffer rather than by each caller.
The GIST xlog code still needs a lot of love, but I'll worry about that
separately.
when an error occurs during xlog replay. Also, replace the former risky
'write into a fixed-size buffer with no overflow detection' API for XLOG
record description routines; use an expansible StringInfo instead. (The
latter accounts for most of the patch bulk.)

comments on cluster global objects like databases, tablespaces, and
roles.
It touches a lot of places, but not much in the way of big changes. The
only design decision I made was to duplicate the query and manipulation
functions rather than to try and have them handle both shared and local
comments. I believe this is simpler for the code and not an issue for
callers because they know what type of object they are dealing with.
This has resulted in a shobj_description function analagous to
obj_description and backend functions [Create/Delete]SharedComments
mirroring the existing [Create/Delete]Comments functions.

errors that can otherwise occur once the OID counter has wrapped around.
Duplicate relfilenode values are also checked for when creating new

of special case for Windows port. Put a PG_TRY around most of createdb()
to ensure that we remove copied subdirectories on failure, even if the
failure happens while creating the pg_database row. (I think this explains
Oliver Siegmar's recent report.) Having done that, there's no need for
the fragile assumption that copydir() mustn't ereport(ERROR), so simplify
its API. Eliminate the old code that used system("cp ...") to copy
subdirectories, in favor of using copydir() on all platforms. This not
only should allow much better error reporting, but allows us to fsync
the created files before trusting that the copy has succeeded.
requiring superuserness always, allow an owner to reassign ownership
to any role he is a member of, if that role would have the right to
create a similar object. These three requirements essentially state
that the would-be alterer has enough privilege to DROP the existing
object and then re-CREATE it as the new role; so we might as well
let him do it in one step. The ALTER TABLESPACE case is a bit
squirrely, but the whole concept of non-superuser tablespace owners

as well as preventing a more obscure race condition involving changes
to a template database just after copying it with CREATE DATABASE.
unlike template0 and template1 does not have any special status in
terms of backend functionality. However, all external utilities such
as createuser and createdb now connect to "postgres" instead of
template1, and the documentation is changed to encourage people to use
"postgres" instead of template1 as a play area. This should fix some
longstanding gotchas involving unexpected propagation of database
objects by createdb (when you used template1 without understanding
the implications), as well as ameliorating the problem that CREATE
DATABASE is unhappy if anyone else is connected to template1.

This should reduce contention at least a little, and it definitely makes

indexes. Replace all heap_openr and index_openr calls by heap_open
and index_open. Remove runtime lookups of catalog OID numbers in
various places. Remove relcache's support for looking up system
catalogs by name. Bulky but mostly very boring patch ...
explicit paths, so that the log can be replayed in a data directory
with a different absolute path than the original had. To avoid forcing
initdb in the 8.0 branch, continue to accept the old WAL log record
types; they will never again be generated however, and the code can be
dropped after the next forced initdb. Per report from Oleg Bartunov.
We still need to think about what it really means to WAL-log CREATE
TABLESPACE commands: we more or less have to put the absolute path
into those, but how to replay in a different context??
database's datallowconn and datfrozenxid to the current transaction ID
instead of copying the source database's values. This is OK because we
assume the source DB contains no normal transaction IDs whatsoever.
This keeps VACUUM from immediately starting to complain about unvacuumed
databases in the situation where we are more than 2 billion transactions
out from the XID stamp of template0. Per discussion with Milen Radev
(although his complaint turned out to be due to something else, but the
problem is real anyway).
the freelist, plus per-buffer spinlocks that protect access to individual
shared buffer headers. This requires abandoning a global freelist (since
the freelist is a global contention point), which shoots down ARC and 2Q
as well as plain LRU management. Adopt a clock sweep algorithm instead.
Preliminary results show substantial improvement in multi-backend situations.
in favor of looking at the flat file copy of pg_database during backend
startup. This should finally eliminate the various corner cases in which
backend startup fails unexpectedly because it isn't able to distinguish
live and dead tuples in pg_database. Simplify locking on pg_database
to be similar to the rules used with pg_shadow and pg_group, and eliminate
FlushRelationBuffers operations that were used only to reduce the odds
of failure of GetRawDatabaseInfo.
initdb forced due to addition of a trigger to pg_database.
in GetNewTransactionId(). Since the limit value has to be computed
before we run any real transactions, this requires adding code to database
startup to scan pg_database and determine the oldest datfrozenxid.
This can conveniently be combined with the first stage of an attack on
the problem that the 'flat file' copies of pg_shadow and pg_group are
not properly updated during WAL recovery. The code I've added to
startup resides in a new file src/backend/utils/init/flatfiles.c, and
it is responsible for rewriting the flat files as well as initializing
the XID wraparound limit value. This will eventually allow us to get
rid of GetRawDatabaseInfo too, but we'll need an initdb so we can add
a trigger to pg_database.
Also performed an initial run through of upgrading our Copyright date to
extend to 2005 ... first run here was very simple ... change everything
where: grep 1996-2004 && the word 'Copyright' ... scanned through the
generated list with 'less' first, and after, to make sure that I only
picked up the right entries ...
this is to avoid scenarios where incoming backends find no live copies
of a database's row because the only live copy is in an as-yet-unwritten
shared buffer, which they can't see. Also, use FlushRelationBuffers()
for forcing out pg_database, instead of the much more expensive BufferSync().
There's no need to write out pages belonging to other relations.
files and directories. This ensures that the bgwriter will close any open
file references it is holding for files therein, which is needed for the
rmdir() to succeed. Andrew Dunstan and Tom Lane.
specifies a new default tablespace and the template database already has
some tables in that tablespace. There isn't any way to solve this fully
without modifying the clone database's pg_class contents, so for now the
best we can do is issue a better error message.
during replay of CREATE DATABASE as well as the first time around.
Else it's possible that the copy operation will copy obsolete blocks.
We are still a long way from guaranteeing anything about using a
recently-written database as a CREATE template, but this seems needed
to ensure the existing behavior holds up during replay.
Fix TablespaceCreateDbspace() to be able to create a dummy directory
in place of a dropped tablespace's symlink. This eliminates the open
problem of a PANIC during WAL replay when a replayed action attempts
to touch a file in a since-deleted tablespace. It also makes for a
significant improvement in the usability of PITR replay.
to the old owner with the new owner. This is not necessarily right, but
it's sure a lot more likely to be what the user wants than doing nothing.

contained a lot of "Unix/Windows" agnostic functions so I added a function
there instead and removed the PATHSEP declaration in exec.c altogether. All
to keep things from scattering all over the code.
I also took the liberty of changing the name of the functions
"first_path_sep" and "last_path_sep". Where I come from (and I'm apparently
not alone given the former macro name PATHSEP), they should be called
"first_dir_sep" and "last_dir_sep". The new function I introduced, that
actually finds path separators, is now the "first_path_sep". The patch
contains changes on all affected places of course.
I also changed the documentation on dynamic_library_path to reflect the
chagnes.

It was necessary to touch in grammar and create a new node to make home
to the new syntax. The command is also supported in E
CPG. Doc updates are attached too. Only superusers can change the owner
of the database. New owners don't need any aditional
privileges.

In the past, we used a 'Lispy' linked list implementation: a "list" was
merely a pointer to the head node of the list. The problem with that
design is that it makes lappend() and length() linear time. This patch
fixes that problem (and others) by maintaining a count of the list
length and a pointer to the tail node along with each head node pointer.
A "list" is now a pointer to a structure containing some meta-data
about the list; the head and tail pointers in that structure refer
to ListCell structures that maintain the actual linked list of nodes.
The function names of the list API have also been changed to, I hope,
be more logically consistent. By default, the old function names are
still available; they will be disabled-by-default once the rest of
the tree has been updated to use the new API names.

since it seems quite unlikely to ever get resurrected.

For future reference, casting NULL to a pointer type is only necessary
when (a) invoking a function AND either (b) the function has no prototype

pghackers proposal of 8-Nov. All the existing cross-type comparison
operators (int2/int4/int8 and float4/float8) have appropriate support.
The original proposal of storing the right-hand-side datatype as part of
the primary key for pg_amop and pg_amproc got modified a bit in the event;
it is easier to store zero as the 'default' case and only store a nonzero
when the operator is actually cross-type. Along the way, remove the
long-since-defunct bigbox_ops operator class.
Remove the 'strategy map' code, which was a large amount of mechanism
that no longer had any use except reverse-mapping from procedure OID to
strategy number. Passing the strategy number to the index AM in the
first place is simpler and faster.
This is a preliminary step in planned support for cross-datatype index
operations. I'm committing it now since the ScanKeyEntryInitialize()
API change touches quite a lot of files, and I want to commit those
changes before the tree drifts under me.

I did not force initdb, but the permissions lockdown on template1 will
not take effect unless you do one (or manually REVOKE TEMP ON DATABASE template1 FROM public).

per earlier discussion. Simplify scheme for overlaying fields in tuple
header (no need for cmax to live in more than one place). Don't try to

pg_type_is_visible, pg_function_is_visible, pg_operator_is_visible,
pg_opclass_is_visible to test whether objects contained in schemas are
visible in the current search path. Do some minor cleanup to centralize
accesses to pg_database, as well.
hardwired lists of index names for each catalog, use the relcache's
mechanism for caching lists of OIDs of indexes of any table. This
reduces the common case of updating system catalog indexes to a single
line, makes it much easier to add a new system index (in fact, you
can now do so on-the-fly if you want to), and as a nice side benefit
improves performance a little. Per recent pghackers discussion.

Per Tom Lane's suggestion the information whether a tuple has an oid
or not is carried in the tuple descriptor. For debugging reasons
tdhasoid is of type char, not bool. There are predefined values for
WITHOID, WITHOUTOID and UNDEFOID.
This patch has been generated against a cvs snapshot from last week
and I don't expect it to apply cleanly to current sources. While I
post it here for public review, I'm working on a new version against a
current snapshot. (There's been heavy activity recently; hope to
catch up some day ...)
This is a long patch; if it is too hard to swallow, I can provide it
in smaller pieces:

Part 2 is the most hairy part because of changes in the executor and
even in the parser; the other parts are straightforward.
Up to part 4 the patched postmaster stays binary compatible to
databases created with an unpatched version. Part 5 is small (100
lines) and finally breaks compatibility.

pg_relcheck is gone; CHECK, UNIQUE, PRIMARY KEY, and FOREIGN KEY
constraints all have real live entries in pg_constraint. pg_depend
exists, and RESTRICT/CASCADE options work on most kinds of DROP;
however, pg_depend is not yet very well populated with dependencies.
(Most of the ones that are present at this point just replace formerly
hardwired associations, such as the implicit drop of a relation's pg_type
entry when the relation is dropped.) Need to add more logic to create
dependency entries, improve pg_dump to dump constraints in place of
indexes and triggers, and add some regression tests.
in snapshots, per my proposal of a few days ago. Also, tweak heapam.c
routines (heap_insert, heap_update, heap_delete, heap_mark4update) to
be passed the command ID to use, instead of doing GetCurrentCommandID.
For catalog updates they'll still get passed current command ID, but
for updates generated from the main executor they'll get passed the
command ID saved in the snapshot the query is using. This should fix
some corner cases associated with functions and triggers that advance
current command ID while an outer query is still in progress.
yesterday's proposal to pghackers. Also remove unnecessary parameters
to heap_beginscan, heap_rescan. I modified pg_proc.h to reflect the
new numbers of parameters for the AM interface routines, but did not
force an initdb because nothing actually looks at those fields.
GUC support. It's now possible to set datestyle, timezone, and
client_encoding from postgresql.conf and per-database or per-user
settings. Also, implement rollback of SET commands that occur in a
transaction that later fails. Create a SET LOCAL var = value syntax
that sets the variable only for the duration of the current transaction.
All per previous discussions in pghackers.
pg_database, pg_shadow, pg_group, all of which now have potentially-long
fields. Along the way, get rid of SharedSystemRelationNames list: shared
rels are now identified in their include/pg_catalog/*.h files by a
BKI_SHARED_RELATION macro, while indexes and toast rels inherit sharedness
automatically from their parent table. Fix some bugs with failure to detoast
pg_group.grolist during ALTER GROUP.

wasting on padding). EXECUTE and USAGE bits for procedures, languages
now are separate privileges instead of being overlaid on SELECT. Add
privileges for namespaces and databases. The GRANT and REVOKE commands
work for these object types, but we don't actually enforce the privileges

to do this just before 7.3 beta but it has to be done now, as you will
see below.
o Change current INFO messages that should be controlled by
client_min_messages to NOTICE.

to always go to the client.
o Remove INFO from the client_min_messages options and add NOTICE.
Seems we do need three non-ERROR elog levels to handle the various
behaviors we need for these messages.

Fixed.
I found new bug in command/variable.c in parse_client_encoding(), nobody
probably never see this error:

Some interesting side effects: TOAST pointers are 20 bytes not 32 now;
pg_description has a three-column key instead of one.
Bugs fixed in passing: BINARY cursors work again; pg_class.relhaspkey
has some usefulness; pg_dump dumps comments on indexes, rules, and
triggers in a valid order.
initdb forced.
platforms system(2) gets confused unless the signal handler is set to
SIG_DFL, not SIG_IGN. pgstats.c now uses pqsignal() as it should,
not signal(). Also, arrange for the stats collector process to show
a reasonable ID in 'ps', rather than looking like a postmaster.
useful as yet, since its primary source of information is (full) VACUUM,
which makes a concerted effort to get rid of free space before telling
the map about it ... next stop is concurrent VACUUM ...
pg_database now has unique indexes on oid and on datname.
pg_shadow now has unique indexes on usename and on usesysid.
pg_am now has unique index on oid.
pg_opclass now has unique index on oid.
pg_amproc now has unique index on amid+amopclaid+amprocnum.
Remove pg_rewrite's unnecessary index on oid, delete unused RULEOID syscache.
Remove index on pg_listener and associated syscache for performance reasons
(caching rows that are certain to change before you need 'em again is
rather pointless).
Change pg_attrdef's nonunique index on adrelid into a unique index on
adrelid+adnum.
Fix various incorrect settings of pg_class.relisshared, make that the
primary reference point for whether a relation is shared or not.
IsSharedSystemRelationName() is now only consulted to initialize relisshared
during initial creation of tables and indexes. In theory we might now
support shared user relations, though it's not clear how one would get
entries for them into pg_class &etc of multiple databases.
Fix recently reported bug that pg_attribute rows created for an index all have
the same OID. (Proof that non-unique OID doesn't matter unless it's
actually used to do lookups ;-))
There's no need to treat pg_trigger, pg_attrdef, pg_relcheck as bootstrap
relations. Convert them into plain system catalogs without hardwired
entries in pg_class and friends.
Unify global.bki and template1.bki into a single init script postgres.bki,
since the alleged distinction between them was misleading and pointless.
Not to mention that it didn't work for setting up indexes on shared
system relations.
Rationalize locking of pg_shadow, pg_group, pg_attrdef (no need to use
AccessExclusiveLock where ExclusiveLock or even RowExclusiveLock will do).
Also, hold locks until transaction commit where necessary.
bothering to check the return value --- which meant that in case the
update or delete failed because of a concurrent update, you'd not find
out about it, except by observing later that the transaction produced
the wrong outcome. There are now subroutines simple_heap_update and
simple_heap_delete that should be used anyplace that you're not prepared
to do the full nine yards of coping with concurrent updates. In
practice, that seems to mean absolutely everywhere but the executor,
because *noplace* else was checking.
maintained for each cache entry. A cache entry will not be freed until
the matching ReleaseSysCache call has been executed. This eliminates
worries about cache entries getting dropped while still in use. See
my posting to pg-hackers of even date for more info.
cloned, rather than always cloning template1. Modify initdb to generate
two identical databases rather than one, template0 and template1.
Connections to template0 are disallowed, so that it will always remain
in its virgin as-initdb'd state. pg_dumpall now dumps databases with
restore commands that say CREATE DATABASE foo WITH TEMPLATE = template0.
This allows proper behavior when there is user-added data in template1.

that search loops only have to scan that far and not through all maxBackends
entries. This eliminates a performance penalty for setting maxBackends
much higher than the average number of active backends. Also, eliminate
no-longer-used 'backend tag' concept. Remove setting of environment
variables at backend start (except for CYR_RECODE), since none of them
are being examined by the backend any longer.
user is now defined in terms of the user id, the user name is only computed
upon request (for display purposes). This is kind of the opposite of the
previous state, which would maintain the user name and compute the user id
for permission checks.
Besides perhaps saving a few cycles (integer vs string), this now creates a
single point of attack for changing the user id during a connection, for
purposes of "setuid" functions, etc.
key call sites are changed, but most called functions are still oldstyle.
An exception is that the PL managers are updated (so, for example, NULL
handling now behaves as expected in plperl and plpgsql functions).
NOTE initdb is forced due to added column in pg_proc.
CREATE DB/DROP DB. If you didn't think they were wrong, try what
happens when you compile with -DCLOBBER_FREED_MEMORY --- database
name displayed in error messages is trashed, because transaction
abort freed it. Also, remove trailing periods in error messages,
per our prevailing style.
at all, and because of shell quoting rules this can't be fixed, so I put
in error messages to that end.
Also, calling create or drop database in a transaction block is not so
good either, because the file system mysteriously refuses to roll back rm
calls on transaction aborts. :) So I put in checks to see if a transaction
is in progress and signal an error.
Also I put the whole call in a transaction of its own to be able to roll
back changes to pg_database in case the file system operations fail.
The alternative location issues I posted recently were untouched, awaiting
the outcome of that discussion. Other than that, this should be much more
fool-proof now.
The docs I cleaned up as well.

eliminating some wildly inconsistent coding in various parts of the
system. I set MAXPGPATH = 1024 in config.h.in. If anyone is really
convinced that there ought to be a configure-time test to set the
value, go right ahead ... but I think it's a waste of time.
* Buffer refcount cleanup (per my "progress report" to pghackers, 9/22).
* Add links to backend PROC structs to sinval's array of per-backend info,
and use these links for routines that need to check the state of all
backends (rather than the slow, complicated search of the ShmemIndex
hashtable that was used before). Add databaseOID to PROC structs.
* Use this to implement an interlock that prevents DESTROY DATABASE of
a database containing running backends. (It's a little tricky to prevent
a concurrently-starting backend from getting in there, since the new
backend is not able to lock anything at the time it tries to look up
its database in pg_database. My solution is to recheck that the DB is
OK at the end of InitPostgres. It may not be a 100% solution, but it's
a lot better than no interlock at all...)
* In ALTER TABLE RENAME, flush buffers for the relation before doing the
rename of the physical files, to ensure we don't get failures later from
mdblindwrt().
* Update TRUNCATE patch so that it actually compiles against current
sources :-(.
You should do "make clean all" after pulling these changes.
additional argument specifying the kind of lock to acquire/release (or
'NoLock' to do no lock processing). Ensure that all relations are locked
with some appropriate lock level before being examined --- this ensures
that relevant shared-inval messages have been processed and should prevent
problems caused by concurrent VACUUM. Fix several bugs having to do with
mismatched increment/decrement of relation ref count and mismatched
heap_open/close (which amounts to the same thing). A bogus ref count on
a relation doesn't matter much *unless* a SI Inval message happens to
arrive at the wrong time, which is probably why we got away with this
sloppiness for so long. Repair missing grab of AccessExclusiveLock in
DROP TABLE, ALTER/RENAME TABLE, etc, as noted by Hiroshi.
Recommend 'make clean all' after pulling this update; I modified the
Relation struct layout slightly.
Will post further discussion to pghackers list shortly.
