Bruce Momjian e9cda08b2b Brief note about sequence cache not being cleared in other backends.
Actually clear the cache in the backend making the alteration. This
follows in the footsteps of setval().

Bruce Momjian 3bb7e1ef11 Fix sequence casting. 2003-03-21 03:55:21 +00:00
Bruce Momjian 5f65225fa3 Todo items:
Add ALTER SEQUENCE to modify min/max/increment/cache/cycle values

Also updated create sequence docs to mention NO MINVALUE, & NO MAXVALUE.

New Files:
doc/src/sgml/ref/alter_sequence.sgml
src/test/regress/expected/sequence.out
src/test/regress/sql/sequence.sql

ALTER SEQUENCE is NOT transactional. It behaves similarly to setval().
It matches the proposed SQL200N spec, as well as Oracle in most ways --
Oracle lacks RESTART WITH for some strange reason.

I changed the code to use sizeof - but will wait for a response from
Peter before changing the size. It's consistent throughout the sequence
code to be 100 for this purpose.

Tom Lane f9b5b41ef9 Code review for ON COMMIT patch. Make the actual on-commit action happen
before commit, not after :-( --- the original coding is not only unsafe
if an error occurs while it's processing, but it generates an invalid
sequence of WAL entries. Resurrect 7.2 logic for deleting items when
no longer needed. Use an enum instead of random macros. Editorialize
on names used for routines and constants. Teach backend/nodes routines
about new field in CreateTable struct. Add a regression test.

Tom Lane 5df307c778 Restructure local-buffer handling per recent pghackers discussion.
The local buffer manager is no longer used for newly-created relations
(unless they are TEMP); a new non-TEMP relation goes through the shared
bufmgr and thus will participate normally in checkpoints. But TEMP relations
use the local buffer manager throughout their lifespan. Also, operations
in TEMP relations are not logged in WAL, thus improving performance.
Since it's no longer necessary to fsync relations as they move out of the
local buffers into shared buffers, quite a lot of smgr.c/md.c/fd.c code
is no longer needed and has been removed: there's no concept of a dirty
relation anymore in md.c/fd.c, and we never fsync anything but WAL.
Still TODO: improve local buffer management algorithms so that it would
be reasonable to increase NLocBuffer.

Bruce Momjian 3c35face41 This patch wraps all accesses to t_xmin, t_cmin, t_xmax, and t_cmax in
HeapTupleHeaderData in setter and getter macros called
HeapTupleHeaderGetXmin, HeapTupleHeaderSetXmin etc.

It also introduces a "virtual" field xvac by defining
HeapTupleHeaderGetXvac and HeapTupleHeaderSetXvac. Xvac is used by
VACUUM, in fact it is stored in t_cmin.

Tom Lane a2597ef179 Modify sequence state storage to eliminate dangling-pointer problem
exemplified by bug #671. Moving the storage to relcache turned out to
be a bad idea because relcache might decide to discard the info. Instead,
open and close the relcache entry on each sequence operation, and use
a record of the current XID to discover whether we already hold
AccessShareLock on the sequence.

Tom Lane 959e61e917 Remove global variable scanCommandId in favor of storing a command ID
in snapshots, per my proposal of a few days ago. Also, tweak heapam.c
routines (heap_insert, heap_update, heap_delete, heap_mark4update) to
be passed the command ID to use, instead of doing GetCurrentCommandID.
For catalog updates they'll still get passed current command ID, but
for updates generated from the main executor they'll get passed the
command ID saved in the snapshot the query is using. This should fix
some corner cases associated with functions and triggers that advance
current command ID while an outer query is still in progress.

Tom Lane 71dc300a37 The contents of command.c, creatinh.c, define.c, remove.c and rename.c
have been divided according to the type of object manipulated - so ALTER
TABLE code is in tablecmds.c, aggregate commands in aggregatecmds.c and
so on.

A few common support routines remain in define.c (prototypes in
src/include/commands/defrem.h).

No code has been changed except for includes to reflect the new files.
The prototypes for aggregatecmds.c, functioncmds.c, operatorcmds.c,
and typecmds.c remain in src/include/commands/defrem.h.

Tom Lane 5f4745adf4 Further cleanups for relations in schemas: teach nextval and other
sequence functions how to cope with qualified names. Same code is
also used for int4notin, currtid_byrelname, pgstattuple. Also,
move TOAST tables into special pg_toast namespace.
2002-03-30 01:02:42 +00:00
Tom Lane d5e99ab4d6 pg_type has a typnamespace column; system now supports creating types
in different namespaces. Also, cleanup work on relation namespace
support: drop, alter, rename commands work for tables in non-default
namespaces.

Tom Lane 108a0ec87d A little further progress on schemas: push down RangeVars into
addRangeTableEntry calls. Remove relname field from RTEs, since
it will no longer be a useful unique identifier of relations;
we want to encourage people to rely on the relation OID instead.
Further work on dumping qual expressions in EXPLAIN, too.
2002-03-22 02:56:37 +00:00
Tom Lane 56c9b73c1d Change the aclchk.c routines to uniformly use OIDs to identify the
objects to be privilege-checked. Some change in their APIs would be
necessary no matter what in the schema environment, and simply getting
rid of the name-based interface entirely seems like the best way.

Tom Lane 95ef6a3448 First phase of SCHEMA changes, concentrating on fixing the grammar and
the parsetree representation. As yet we don't *do* anything with schema
names, just drop 'em on the floor; but you can enter schema-compatible
command syntax, and there's even a primitive CREATE SCHEMA command.
No doc updates yet, except to note that you can now extract a field
from a function-returning-row's result with (foo(...)).fieldname.

Bruce Momjian 92288a1cf9 Change made to elog:
o Change all current CVS messages of NOTICE to WARNING. We were going
to do this just before 7.3 beta but it has to be done now, as you will
see below.

o Change current INFO messages that should be controlled by
client_min_messages to NOTICE.

o Force remaining INFO messages, like from EXPLAIN, VACUUM VERBOSE, etc.
to always go to the client.

o Remove INFO from the client_min_messages options and add NOTICE.

Seems we do need three non-ERROR elog levels to handle the various
behaviors we need for these messages.

Regression passed.

Bruce Momjian a033daf566 Commit to match discussed elog() changes. Only update is that LOG is
now just below FATAL in server_min_messages. Added more text to
highlight ordering difference between it and client_min_messages.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

REALLYFATAL => PANIC
STOP => PANIC
New INFO level the prints to client by default
New LOG level the prints to server log by default
Cause VACUUM information to print only to the client
NOTICE => INFO where purely information messages are sent
DEBUG => LOG for purely server status messages
DEBUG removed, kept as backward compatible
DEBUG5, DEBUG4, DEBUG3, DEBUG2, DEBUG1 added
DebugLvl removed in favor of new DEBUG[1-5] symbols
New server_min_messages GUC parameter with values:
DEBUG[5-1], INFO, NOTICE, ERROR, LOG, FATAL, PANIC
New client_min_messages GUC parameter with values:
DEBUG[5-1], LOG, INFO, NOTICE, ERROR, FATAL, PANIC
Server startup now logged with LOG instead of DEBUG
Remove debug_level GUC parameter
elog() numbers now start at 10
Add test to print error message if older elog() values are passed to elog()
Bootstrap mode now has a -d that requires an argument, like postmaster

Tom Lane eb5e8bae26 Fix sequence creation to set the t_xmin of a sequence's tuple to
FrozenTransactionId, not the XID of the creating transaction. Without
this it's possible for a reference to a long-gone CLOG record to occur,
per Christian Meunier's bug report of 10-Jan-02. Worse, the sequence
tuple would become invisible to SELECTs after 2 billion transactions.

Since the fix is applied during sequence creation it does not help
existing databases, unless you drop and recreate every sequence.
However, we intend to force initdb for 7.2RC1 anyway, to fix a pg_proc
error, so I see no need to do more for this problem.

Tom Lane bf56f0759b Make OIDs optional, per discussions in pghackers. WITH OIDS is still the
default, but OIDS are removed from many system catalogs that don't need them.
Some interesting side effects: TOAST pointers are 20 bytes not 32 now;
pg_description has a three-column key instead of one.

Bugs fixed in passing: BINARY cursors work again; pg_class.relhaspkey
has some usefulness; pg_dump dumps comments on indexes, rules, and
triggers in a valid order.

initdb forced.

Tom Lane 642107d5ba Avoid unnecessary lseek() calls by cleanups in md.c. mdfd_lstbcnt was
not being consulted anywhere, so remove it and remove the _mdnblocks()
calls that were used to set it. Change smgrextend interface to pass in
the target block number (ie, current file length) --- the caller always
knows this already, having already done smgrnblocks(), so it's silly to
do it over again inside mdextend. Net result: extension of a file now
takes one lseek(SEEK_END) and a write(), not three lseeks and a write.

Failure to make a feasible split, combined with failure to notice the

we'll get error messages rather than silent failures if so. Also clean

Tom Lane 6162432de9 Add more critical-section calls: all code sections that hold spinlocks
are now critical sections, so as to ensure die() won't interrupt us while
we are munging shared-memory data structures. Avoid insecure intermediate
states in some code that proc_exit will call, like palloc/pfree. Rename
START/END_CRIT_CODE to START/END_CRIT_SECTION, since that seems to be
what people tend to call them anyway, and make them be called with () like
a function call, in hopes of not confusing pg_indent.
I doubt that this is sufficient to make SIGTERM safe anywhere; there's
just too much code that could get invoked during proc_exit().

Peter Eisentraut 6dc249610a Code cleanup of user name and user id handling in the backend. The current
user is now defined in terms of the user id, the user name is only computed
upon request (for display purposes). This is kind of the opposite of the
previous state, which would maintain the user name and compute the user id
for permission checks.

Besides perhaps saving a few cycles (integer vs string), this now creates a
single point of attack for changing the user id during a connection, for
purposes of "setuid" functions, etc.

Tom Lane eabc714a91 Reimplement parsing and storage of default expressions and constraint
expressions in CREATE TABLE. There is no longer an emasculated expression
syntax for these things; it's full a_expr for constraints, and b_expr
for defaults (unfortunately the fact that NOT NULL is a part of the
column constraint syntax causes a shift/reduce conflict if you try a_expr.
Oh well --- at least parenthesized boolean expressions work now). Also,
stored expression for a column default is not pre-coerced to the column
type; we rely on transformInsertStatement to do that when the default is
actually used. This means "f1 datetime default 'now'" behaves the way
people usually expect it to.
BTW, all the support code is now there to implement ALTER TABLE ADD
CONSTRAINT and ALTER TABLE ADD COLUMN with a default value. I didn't
actually teach ALTER TABLE to call it, but it wouldn't be much work.

Tom Lane bd272cace6 Mega-commit to make heap_open/heap_openr/heap_close take an
additional argument specifying the kind of lock to acquire/release (or
'NoLock' to do no lock processing). Ensure that all relations are locked
with some appropriate lock level before being examined --- this ensures
that relevant shared-inval messages have been processed and should prevent
problems caused by concurrent VACUUM. Fix several bugs having to do with
mismatched increment/decrement of relation ref count and mismatched
heap_open/close (which amounts to the same thing). A bogus ref count on
a relation doesn't matter much *unless* a SI Inval message happens to
arrive at the wrong time, which is probably why we got away with this
sloppiness for so long. Repair missing grab of AccessExclusiveLock in
DROP TABLE, ALTER/RENAME TABLE, etc, as noted by Hiroshi.
Recommend 'make clean all' after pulling this update; I modified the
Relation struct layout slightly.

Bruce Momjian 7971539020 heap_fetch requires buffer pointer, must be released; heap_getnext
no longer returns buffer pointer, can be gotten from scan;
	descriptor; bootstrap can create multi-key indexes;
pg_procname index now is multi-key index; oidint2, oidint4, oidname
are gone (must be removed from regression tests); use System Cache
rather than sequential scan in many places; heap_modifytuple no
longer takes buffer parameter; remove unused buffer parameter in
a few other functions; oid8 is not index-able; remove some use of
single-character variable names; cleanup Buffer variables usage
and scan descriptor looping; cleaned up allocation and freeing of
tuples; 18k lines of diff;

Bruce Momjian 31c36102ca The buffer overrun while creating sequences turns out to be a read
access overrun. For the sake of doing things properly here is a
patch which fixes it.

This patch is for the file backend/commands/sequence.c.

Bruce Momjian 9a0dd4fb18 There's a patch attached to fix gcc 2.8.x warnings, except for the
yyerror ones from bison. It also includes a few 'enhancements' to
the C programming style (which are, of course, personal).

The other patch removes the compilation of backend/lib/qsort.c, as
qsort() is a standard function in stdlib.h and can be used any
where else (and it is). It was only used in
backend/optimizer/geqo/geqo_pool.c, backend/optimizer/path/predmig.c,
and backend/storage/page/bufpage.c

There's more to come. Please review these patches. I ran the
regression tests and they only failed where this was expected
(random, geo, etc).

Bruce Momjian 65faaf3046 atttypmod now -1. 1998-02-07 06:11:56 +00:00
Bruce Momjian c65ea0e040 New pg_attribute.atttypmod for type-specific information like
varchar length.

Cleans up code so attlen is always length.

Removed varchar() hack added earlier.

Will fix bug in selecting varchar() fields, and varchar() can be
variable length.
