Tom Lane 6e07709760 Implement SQL-compliant treatment of row comparisons for < <= > >= cases
(previously we only did = and <> correctly). Also, allow row comparisons
with any operators that are in btree opclasses, not only those with these
specific names. This gets rid of a whole lot of indefensible assumptions
about the behavior of particular operators based on their names ... though
it's still true that IN and NOT IN expand to "= ANY". The patch adds a
RowCompareExpr expression node type, and makes some changes in the
representation of ANY/ALL/ROWCOMPARE SubLinks so that they can share code
with RowCompareExpr.

I have not yet done anything about making RowCompareExpr an indexable
operator, but will look at that soon.

Bruce Momjian 04db9d25d1 there's a paragraph in the ALTER TABLE reference page that reads:
DROP CONSTRAINT

This form drops constraints on a table. Currently, constraints on tables
are not required to have unique names, so there may be more than one
constraint matching the specified name. All matching constraints will be
    dropped.

To my knowledge, it is no longer possible to create constraints with the
same name for the same relation. When you create a constraint and specify
the same name explictly, an error is raised. Implicit constraint creation
won't choose an existing name either and up to now you could not rename a
constraint. Renaming works with the patch I sent in a few hours ago but this
patch as well won't allow constraints with identical names on the same
relation.

The attached patch thus removes the note in the docs.

Bruce Momjian af2e8a872d Documentation cleanup mention:
non-ascii convert to & escapes
2005-12-06 18:45:18 +00:00
Bruce Momjian dae896b67d Since my name has a non-ascii-letter in it, it's often spelled wrong. In
the latest release notes there is a latin1 character that shouldn't be
there so I made a patch to fix that. This patch also fixes some old
entries that uses o instead of ö (which is also wrong but not as
bad as including a latin1 character in the sgml file).

Bruce Momjian d20901a39b Allow to_char(interval) and to_char(time) to use AM/PM specifications.
Map them to a single day, so '30 hours' is 'AM'.

Have to_char(interval) and to_char(time) use "HH", "HH12" as 12-hour
intervals, rather than bypass and print the full interval hours. This
is neeeded because to_char(time) is mapped to interval in this function.
Intervals should use "HH24", and document suggestion.

Allow "D" format specifiers for interval/time.

Andrew Dunstan 5b352d8e12 DROP DATABASE IF EXISTS variant 2005-11-22 15:24:18 +00:00
Alvaro Herrera cec3b0a9e6 Implement DROP OWNED and REASSIGN OWNED. These new commands facilitate the
process of dropping roles by dropping objects owned by them and privileges
granted to them, or giving the owned objects to someone else, through the
use of the data stored in the new pg_shdepend catalog.

Some refactoring of the GRANT/REVOKE code was needed, as well as ALTER OWNER
code. Further cleanup of code duplication in the GRANT code seems necessary.

Implemented by me after an idea from Tom Lane, who also provided various kind
of implementation advice.

Regression tests pass. Some tests for the new functionality are also added,
as well as rudimentary documentation.

Tom Lane 1e9a1a70ad Change array_push and array_cat so that they retain the lower bound of
the array (for array_push) or higher-dimensional array (for array_cat)
rather than decrementing it as before. This avoids generating lower
bounds other than one for any array operation within the SQL spec. Per
recent discussion.
Interestingly, this seems to have been the original behavior, because
while updating the docs I noticed that a large fraction of relevant
examples were *wrong* for the old behavior and are now right. Is it
worth correcting this in the back-branch docs?

Tom Lane cecb607559 Make SQL arrays support null elements. This commit fixes the core array
functionality, but I still need to make another pass looking at places
that incidentally use arrays (such as ACL manipulation) to make sure they
are null-safe. Contrib needs work too.
I have not changed the behaviors that are still under discussion about
array comparison and what to do with lower bounds.

Tom Lane abd3f43b4c Fix syslog bug: if any messages are emitted to write_syslog before
the facility has been set, the facility gets set to LOCAL0 and cannot
be changed later. This seems reasonably plausible to happen, particularly
at higher debug log levels, though I am not certain it explains Han Holl's
recent report. Easiest fix is to teach the code how to change the value
on-the-fly, which is nicer anyway. I made the settings PGC_SIGHUP to
conform with log_destination.

2005-10-13 21:09:38 +00:00
Bruce Momjian 8ac386226d The patch updates the documentation to reflect the fact that higher values
of client_min_messages (fatal + panic) are valid and also fixes a slight
issue with how psql tried to display error messages that aren't sent to
the client.

We often tell people to ignore errors in response to requests for things
like "drop if exists", but there's no good way to completely hide this
without upping client_min_messages past ERROR. When running a file like

SET client_min_messages TO 'FATAL';

DROP TABLE doesntexist;

with "psql -f filename" you get an error prefix of
"psql:/home/username/filename:3" even though there is no error message to
prefix because it isn't sent to the client.

defect that the DROPs will fail for roles that own objects or have
privileges, but perhaps we can improve that later.

2005-10-03 01:57:59 +00:00
Tom Lane aa731ed843 Change nextval and other sequence functions to specify their sequence
argument as a 'regclass' value instead of a text string. The frontend
conversion of text string to pg_class OID is now encapsulated as an
implicitly-invocable coercion from text to regclass. This provides
backwards compatibility to the old behavior when the sequence argument
is explicitly typed as 'text'. When the argument is just an unadorned
literal string, it will be taken as 'regclass', which means that the
stored representation will be an OID. This solves longstanding problems
with renaming sequences that are referenced in default expressions, as
well as new-in-8.1 problems with renaming such sequences' schemas or
moving them to another schema. All per recent discussion.
Along the way, fix some rather serious problems in dbmirror's support
for mirroring sequence operations (int4 vs int8 confusion for instance).

originally proposed as a stopgap solution. For the moment, the initial

2005-09-08 20:07:42 +00:00
Tom Lane e0dedd0559 Implement a preliminary 'template' facility for procedural languages,
as per my recent proposal. For now the template data is hard-wired in
proclang.c --- this should be replaced later by a new shared system
catalog, but we don't want to force initdb during 8.1 beta. This change
lets us cleanly load existing dump files even if they contain outright
wrong information about a PL's support functions, such as a wrong path
to the shared library or a missing validator function. Also, we can
revert the recent kluges to make pg_dump dump PL support functions that
are stored in pg_catalog.
While at it, I removed the code in pg_regress that replaced $libdir
with a hardcoded path for temporary installations. This is no longer
needed given our support for relocatable installations.

saves nearly 700kB in the default shared memory segment size, which seems
worthwhile, and it is a feature that many users won't use anyway. Per
Heikki's argument, there is no point in a compromise value --- those who
are using 2PC at all will probably want it at least equal to max_connections.
But we can't set it to zero by default without breaking the prepared_xacts
regression test.

Tom Lane 33f5bf9700 ALTER TABLE OWNER must change the ownership of the table's rowtype too.
This was not especially critical before, but it is now that we track
ownership dependencies --- the dependency for the rowtype *must* shift
to the new owner. Spotted by Bernd Helmle.
Also fix a problem introduced by recent change to allow non-superusers
to do ALTER OWNER in some cases: if the table had a toast table, ALTER
OWNER failed *even for superusers*, because the test being applied would
conclude that the new would-be owner had no create rights on pg_toast.
A side-effect of the fix is to disallow changing the ownership of indexes
or toast tables separately from their parent table, which seems a good
idea on the whole.

Bruce Momjian d1cffe2f77 Add --encoding to pg_dump.
The Problem: Occassionally a DBA needs to dump a database to a new
encoding. In instances where the current encoding, (or lack of an
encoding, like SQL_ASCII) is poorly supported on the target database
server, it can be useful to dump into a particular encoding. But,
currently the only way to set the encoding of a pg_dump file is to
change client_encoding in postgresql.conf and restart postmaster.
This is more than a little awkward for production systems.

The specification of this function is as follows.

regexp_replace(source text, pattern text, replacement text, [flags
text])
returns text

Replace string that matches to regular expression in source text to
replacement text.

- pattern is regular expression pattern.
- replacement is replace string that can use '\1'-'\9', and '\&'.
'\1'-'\9': back reference to the n'th subexpression.
    '\&' : entire matched string.
- flags can use the following values:
    g: global (replace all)
    i: ignore case
When the flags is not specified, case sensitive, replace the first
    instance only.

Tom Lane b90f8f20f0 Extend r-tree operator classes to handle Y-direction tests equivalent
to the existing X-direction tests. An rtree class now includes 4 actual
2-D tests, 4 1-D X-direction tests, and 4 1-D Y-direction tests.
This involved adding four new Y-direction test operators for each of
box and polygon; I followed the PostGIS project's lead as to the names
of these operators.
NON BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE CHANGE: the poly_overleft (&<) and poly_overright
(&>) operators now have semantics comparable to box_overleft and box_overright.
This is necessary to make r-tree indexes work correctly on polygons.
Also, I changed circle_left and circle_right to agree with box_left and
box_right --- formerly they allowed the boundaries to touch. This isn't
actually essential given the lack of any r-tree opclass for circles, but
it seems best to sync all the definitions while we are at it.

discard these arguments. This allows the driver to avoid renumbering

that OUT parameters are arguments). This doesn't break any currently-
useful cases since VOID is not used as an input argument type.

Tom Lane 7a28de2052 pg_dump can now dump large objects even in plain-text output mode, by
using the recently added lo_create() function. The restore logic in
pg_restore is greatly simplified as well, since there's no need anymore
to try to adjust database references to match a new set of blob OIDs.

Tom Lane 6f7fc0bade Cause initdb to create a third standard database "postgres", which
unlike template0 and template1 does not have any special status in
terms of backend functionality. However, all external utilities such
as createuser and createdb now connect to "postgres" instead of
template1, and the documentation is changed to encourage people to use
"postgres" instead of template1 as a play area. This should fix some
longstanding gotchas involving unexpected propagation of database
objects by createdb (when you used template1 without understanding
the implications), as well as ameliorating the problem that CREATE
DATABASE is unhappy if anyone else is connected to template1.
Patch by Dave Page, minor editing by Tom Lane. All per recent
pghackers discussions.

locks; this allows prepared transactions to be properly associated with
the locks they own. There was already a column named 'transaction',
and I chose to rename it to 'transactionid' --- since this column is
new in the current devel cycle there should be no backwards compatibility
issue to worry about.

"AT TIME ZONE", and not just the shorlist previously available. For
example:

SELECT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP AT TIME ZONE 'Europe/London';

works fine now. It will also obey whatever DST rules were in effect at
just that date, which the previous implementation did not.

It also supports the AT TIME ZONE on the timetz datatype. The whole
handling of DST is a bit bogus there, so I chose to make it use whatever
DST rules are in effect at the time of executig the query. not sure if
anybody is actuallyi *using* timetz though, it seems pretty
unpredictable just because of this...

Tom Lane a2fb7b8a1f Adjust lo_open() so that specifying INV_READ without INV_WRITE creates
a descriptor that uses the current transaction snapshot, rather than
SnapshotNow as it did before (and still does if INV_WRITE is set).
This means pg_dump will now dump a consistent snapshot of large object
contents, as it never could do before. Also, add a lo_create() function
that is similar to lo_creat() but allows the desired OID of the large
object to be specified. This will simplify pg_restore considerably
(but I'll fix that in a separate commit).

Neil Conway d46bc444ac Implement two new special variables in PL/PgSQL: SQLSTATE and SQLERRM.
These contain the SQLSTATE and error message of the current exception,
respectively. They are scope-local variables that are only defined
in exception handlers (so attempting to reference them outside an
exception handler is an error). Update the regression tests and the
documentation.

Also, do some minor related cleanup: export an unpack_sql_state()
function from the backend and use it to unpack a SQLSTATE into a
string, and add a free_var() function to pl_exec.c

Bruce Momjian 4a5cda7bba I've created a patch which adds support for troff "-ms" output to
psql. i.e. "\pset format troff-ms". The patch also corrects some
problems with the "latex" format, notably defining an extra column in
the output table, and correcting some alignment issues; it also
changes the output to match the border setting as documented in the
manual page and as shown with the "aligned" format.

The troff-ms output is mostly identical to the latex output allowing
for the differences between the two typesetters.

The output should be saved in a file and piped as follows:

  cat file | tbl | troff -T ps -ms > file.ps
or
  tbl file | troff -T ps -ms > file.ps

Because it contains tabs, you'll need to redirect psql output or use
"script", rather than pasting from a terminal window, due to the tabs
which can be replaced with spaces.

Bruce Momjian 72c53ac3a7 Allow kerberos name and username case sensitivity to be specified from
postgresql.conf.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's an updated version of the patch, with the following changes:

1) No longer uses "service name" as "application version". It's instead
hardcoded as "postgres". It could be argued that this part should be
backpatched to 8.0, but it doesn't make a big difference until you can
start changing it with GUC / connection parameters. This change only
affects kerberos 5, not 4.

2) Now downcases kerberos usernames when the client is running on win32.

3) Adds guc option for "krb_caseins_users" to make the server ignore
case mismatch which is required by some KDCs such as Active Directory.
Off by default, per discussion with Tom. This change only affects
kerberos 5, not 4.

4) Updated so it doesn't conflict with the rendevouz/bonjour patch
already in ;-)

Neil Conway eda6dd32d1 GiST improvements:
- make sure we always invoke user-supplied GiST methods in a short-lived
memory context. This means the backend isn't exposed to any memory leaks
that be in those methods (in fact, it is probably a net loss for most
GiST methods to bother manually freeing memory now). This also means
we can do away with a lot of ugly manual memory management in the
  GiST code itself.

- keep the current page of a GiST index scan pinned, rather than doing a
ReadBuffer() for each tuple produced by the scan. Since ReadBuffer() is
expensive, this is a perf. win

- implement dead tuple killing for GiST indexes (which is easy to do, now
that we keep a pin on the current scan page). Now all the builtin indexes
  implement dead tuple killing.

- cleanup a lot of ugly code in GiST

of transactions and store its ID in the row's XMAX. This scheme allows
an effectively unlimited number of row locks, just as we did before,
while not costing any extra overhead except when a shared lock actually
has to be shared. Still TODO: use the regular lock manager to control
the grant order when multiple backends are waiting for a row lock.

Tom Lane 7c13781ee7 First phase of project to use fixed OIDs for all system catalogs and
indexes. Extend the macros in include/catalog/*.h to carry the info
about hand-assigned OIDs, and adjust the genbki script and bootstrap
code to make the relations actually get those OIDs. Remove the small
number of RelOid_pg_foo macros that we had in favor of a complete
set named like the catname.h and indexing.h macros. Next phase will
get rid of internal use of names for looking up catalogs and indexes;
but this completes the changes forcing an initdb, so it looks like a
good place to commit.
Along the way, I made the shared relations (pg_database etc) not be
'bootstrap' relations any more, so as to reduce the number of hardwired
entries and simplify changing those relations in future. I'm not
sure whether they ever really needed to be handled as bootstrap
relations, but it seems to work fine to not do so now.

Tom Lane 2193a856a2 Simplify initdb-time assignment of OIDs as I proposed yesterday, and
avoid encroaching on the 'user' range of OIDs by allowing automatic
OID assignment to use values below 16k until we reach normal operation.

initdb not forced since this doesn't make any incompatible change;
however a lot of stuff will have different OIDs after your next initdb.

cannot be recognized.

Neil Conway eb4b7a0b77 Change the default setting of "add_missing_from" to false. This has been
the long-term plan for this behavior for quite some time, but it is only
possible now that DELETE has a USING clause so that the user can join
other tables in a DELETE statement without relying on this behavior.

Neil Conway f5ab0a14ea Add a "USING" clause to DELETE, which is equivalent to the FROM clause
in UPDATE. We also now issue a NOTICE if a query has _any_ implicit
range table entries -- in the past, we would only warn about implicit
RTEs in SELECTs with at least one explicit RTE.

As a result of the warning change, 25 of the regression tests had to
be updated. I also took the opportunity to remove some bogus whitespace
differences between some of the float4 and float8 variants. I believe
I have correctly updated all the platform-specific variants, but let
me know if that's not the case.

Original patch for DELETE ... USING from Euler Taveira de Oliveira,
reworked by Neil Conway.

take. Per a gripe some months back.
