and the editor's cursor will be initially placed on that line. In \e the
lines are counted with respect to the query buffer, while in \ef they are
counted with line 1 = first line of function body. These choices are useful
for positioning the cursor on the line of a previously-reported error.
To avoid assumptions about what switch the user's editor takes for this
purpose, invent a new psql variable EDITOR_LINENUMBER_SWITCH with (at
present) no default value.
One incompatibility from previous behavior is that "\e 1234" will now
take "1234" as a line number not a file name. There are at least two
ways to select a numerically-named file if you really want to.

Per discussion with David Christensen, there can be multiple
instances of PG accessible via local sockets, and you need the port
to see which one you're actually connected to. David's original
patch worked this way, but I inadvertently ripped it out during
commit.
Depending on which spec you read, field widths and precisions in %s may be
counted either in bytes or characters. Our code was assuming bytes, which
is wrong at least for glibc's implementation, and in any case libc might
have a different idea of the prevailing encoding than we do. Hence, for
portable results we must avoid using anything more complex than just "%s"
unless the string to be printed is known to be all-ASCII.
This patch fixes the cases I could find, including the psql formatting
failure reported by Hernan Gonzalez. In HEAD only, I also added comments
to some places where it appears safe to continue using "%.*s".
Those options do nothing right now, but might be wanted later, and in

If expand_dbname is non-zero and dbname contains an = sign, it is taken as
a conninfo string in exactly the same way as if it had been passed to
PQconnectdb. This is equivalent to the way PQsetdbLogin() works, allowing
PQconnectdbParams() to be a complete alternative.
Also improve the way the new function is called from psql and replace a
previously missed call to PQsetdbLogin() in psql. Additionally use
PQconnectdbParams() for pg_dump and friends, and the bin/scripts
command line utilities such as vacuumdb, createdb, etc.
Finally, update the documentation for the new parameter, as well as the
nuances of precedence in cases where key words are repeated or duplicated
in the conninfo string.
in the formerly-always-blank columns just to left and right of the data.
Different marking is used for a line break caused by a newline in the data
than for a straight wraparound. A newline break is signaled by a "+" in the
right margin column in ASCII mode, or a carriage return arrow in UNICODE mode.
Wraparound is signaled by a dot in the right margin as well as the following
left margin in ASCII mode, or an ellipsis symbol in the same places in UNICODE
mode. "\pset linestyle old-ascii" is added to make the previous behavior
available if anyone really wants it.
In passing, this commit also cleans up a few regression test files that
had unintended spacing differences from the current actual output.

break the regression tests in Unicode locales.

This gives significantly saner behavior when two or more sessions overlap in

for editing if no function name is specified. This seems a much cleaner way
to offer that functionality than the original patch had. In passing,
de-clutter the error displays that are given for a bogus function-name
argument, and standardize on "$function$" as the default delimiter for the
function body. (The original coding would use the shortest possible
dollar-quote delimiter, which seems to create unnecessarily high risk of
later conflicts with the user-modified function body.)
In support of that, create a backend function pg_get_functiondef().

renumbering of encoding IDs done between 8.2 and 8.3 turns out to break 8.2
initdb and psql if they are run with an 8.3beta1 libpq.so. For the moment
we can rearrange the order of enum pg_enc to keep the same number for
everything except PG_JOHAB, which isn't a problem since there are no direct
references to it in the 8.2 programs anyway. (This does force initdb
unfortunately.)
Going forward, we want to fix things so that encoding IDs can be changed
without an ABI break, and this commit includes the changes needed to allow
libpq's encoding IDs to be treated as fully independent of the backend's.
The main issue is that libpq clients should not include pg_wchar.h or
otherwise assume they know the specific values of libpq's encoding IDs,
since they might encounter version skew between pg_wchar.h and the libpq.so
they are using. To fix, have libpq officially export functions needed for
encoding name<=>ID conversion and validity checking; it was doing this
anyway unofficially.
It's still the case that we can't renumber backend encoding IDs until the
next bump in libpq's major version number, since doing so will break the
8.2-era client programs. However the code is now prepared to avoid this
type of problem in future.
Note that initdb is no longer a libpq client: we just pull in the two
source files we need directly. The patch also fixes a few places that
were being sloppy about checking for an unrecognized encoding name.

to fix regressions introduced in the recent patch adding additional
\connect options. This is based on work by Volkan YAZICI, although
this version of the patch doesn't bear much resemblance to Volkan's
version.
\connect takes 4 optional arguments: database name, user name, host
name, and port number. If any of those parameters are omitted or
specified as "-", the value of that parameter from the previous
connection is used instead; if there is no previous connection,
the libpq default is used. Note that this behavior makes it
impossible to reuse the libpq defaults without quitting psql and
restarting it; I don't really see the use case for needing to do
that.

comments on cluster global objects like databases, tablespaces, and

It touches a lot of places, but not much in the way of big changes. The
only design decision I made was to duplicate the query and manipulation
functions rather than to try and have them handle both shared and local
comments. I believe this is simpler for the code and not an issue for
callers because they know what type of object they are dealing with.
This has resulted in a shobj_description function analagous to

psql. i.e. "\pset format troff-ms". The patch also corrects some
problems with the "latex" format, notably defining an extra column in
the output table, and correcting some alignment issues; it also
changes the output to match the border setting as documented in the
manual page and as shown with the "aligned" format.
The troff-ms output is mostly identical to the latex output allowing
for the differences between the two typesetters.
The output should be saved in a file and piped as follows:
cat file | tbl | troff -T ps -ms > file.ps
or
tbl file | troff -T ps -ms > file.ps
Because it contains tabs, you'll need to redirect psql output or use
"script", rather than pasting from a terminal window, due to the tabs
which can be replaced with spaces.

conversion of basic ASCII letters. Remove all uses of strcasecmp and
strncasecmp in favor of new functions pg_strcasecmp and pg_strncasecmp;
remove most but not all direct uses of toupper and tolower in favor of
pg_toupper and pg_tolower. These functions use the same notions of
case folding already developed for identifier case conversion. I left
the straight locale-based folding in place for situations where we are
just manipulating user data and not trying to match it to built-in
strings --- for example, the SQL upper() function is still locale
dependent. Perhaps this will prove not to be what's wanted, but at
the moment we can initdb and pass regression tests in Turkish locale.
recent discussion. The lexer is used for both SQL command text and
backslash commands. The purpose of this change is to make it easier to
track the behavior of the backend's SQL lexer --- essentially identical
flex rules are now used by psql. Also, this cleans up a lot of very
squirrelly code in mainloop.c and command.c. The flex code is somewhat
bulkier than the removed code, but should be lots easier to maintain.
little more sane. Some parts of the code was using a static function
xmalloc() that did safe memory allocation (where "safe" means "bail
out on OOM"), but most of it was just invoking calloc() or malloc()
directly. Now almost everything invokes xmalloc() or xcalloc().
client-side AUTOCOMMIT mode now: '\set AUTOCOMMIT off' supports
SQL-spec commit behavior. Get rid of LO_TRANSACTION hack --- the
LO operations just work now, using libpq's ability to track the
transaction status. Add a VERBOSE variable to control verboseness
of error message display, and add a %T prompt-string code to show
current transaction-block status. Superuser state display in the
prompt string correctly follows SET SESSION AUTHORIZATION commands.
Control-C works to get out of COPY IN state.
only remnant of this failed experiment is that the server will take

now, my changes seem to work. Some possible minor bugs got squished
on the way but I can't be sure without more feedback from people who
really put the code to the test.
The new patch mostly simplifies variable handling and reduces code
duplication. Changes in the command parser eliminate some redundant
variables (boolean state + depth counter), replaces some
"else if" constructs with switches, and so on. It is meant to be
applied together with my previous patch, although I hope they don't
conflict; I went back to the CVS version for this one.
One more thing I thought should perhaps be changed: an IGNOREEOF
value of n will ignore only n-1 EOFs. I didn't want to touch this
for fear of breaking existing applications, but it does seem a tad
illogical.
