Stephen Frost c37b3d08ca Allow group access on PGDATA
Allow the cluster to be optionally init'd with read access for the
group.

This means a relatively non-privileged user can perform a backup of the
cluster without requiring write privileges, which enhances security.

The mode of PGDATA is used to determine whether group permissions are
enabled for directory and file creates. This method was chosen as it's
simple and works well for the various utilities that write into PGDATA.

Changing the mode of PGDATA manually will not automatically change the
mode of all the files contained therein. If the user would like to
enable group access on an existing cluster then changing the mode of all
the existing files will be required. Note that pg_upgrade will
automatically change the mode of all migrated files if the new cluster
is init'd with the -g option.

Tests are included for the backend and all the utilities which operate
on the PG data directory to ensure that the correct mode is set based on
the data directory permissions.

Stephen Frost da9b580d89 Refactor dir/file permissions
Consolidate directory and file create permissions for tools which work
with the PG data directory by adding a new module (common/file_perm.c)
that contains variables (pg_file_create_mode, pg_dir_create_mode) and
constants to initialize them (0600 for files and 0700 for directories).

Convert mkdir() calls in the backend to MakePGDirectory() if the
original call used default permissions (always the case for regular PG
directories).

Add tests to make sure permissions in PGDATA are set correctly by the
tools which modify the PG data directory.

Tom Lane dddfc4cb2e Prevent accidental linking of system-supplied copies of libpq.so etc.
We were being careless in some places about the order of -L switches in
link command lines, such that -L switches referring to external directories
could come before those referring to directories within the build tree.
This made it possible to accidentally link a system-supplied library, for
example /usr/lib/libpq.so, in place of the one built in the build tree.
Hilarity ensued, the more so the older the system-supplied library is.

To fix, break LDFLAGS into two parts, a sub-variable LDFLAGS_INTERNAL
and the main LDFLAGS variable, both of which are "recursively expanded"
so that they can be incrementally adjusted by different makefiles.
Establish a policy that -L switches for directories in the build tree
must always be added to LDFLAGS_INTERNAL, while -L switches for external
directories must always be added to LDFLAGS. This is sufficient to
ensure a safe search order. For simplicity, we typically also put -l
switches for the respective libraries into those same variables.
(Traditional make usage would have us put -l switches into LIBS, but
cleaning that up is a project for another day, as there's no clear
need for it.)

This turns out to also require separating SHLIB_LINK into two variables,
SHLIB_LINK and SHLIB_LINK_INTERNAL, with a similar rule about which
switches go into which variable. And likewise for PG_LIBS.

Although this change might appear to affect external users of pgxs.mk,
I think it doesn't; they shouldn't have any need to touch the _INTERNAL
variables.

In passing, tweak src/common/Makefile so that the value of CPPFLAGS
recorded in pg_config lacks "-DFRONTEND" and the recorded value of
LDFLAGS lacks "-L../../../src/common". Both of those things are
mistakes, apparently introduced during prior code rearrangements,
as old versions of pg_config don't print them. In general we don't
want anything that's specific to the src/common subdirectory to
appear in those outputs.

This is certainly a bug fix, but in view of the lack of field
complaints, I'm unsure whether it's worth the risk of back-patching.
In any case it seems wise to see what the buildfarm makes of it first.

Tom Lane ed9b3606da Further refactoring of c.h and nearby files.
This continues the work of commit 91aec93e6 by getting rid of a lot of
Windows-specific funny business in "section 0". Instead of including
pg_config_os.h in different places depending on platform, let's
standardize on putting it before the system headers, and in consequence
reduce win32.h to just what has to appear before the system headers or
the body of c.h (the latter category seems to include only PGDLLIMPORT
and PGDLLEXPORT). The rest of what was in win32.h is moved to a new
sub-include of port.h, win32_port.h. Some of what was in port.h seems
to better belong there too.

It's possible that I missed some declaration ordering dependency that
needs to be preserved, but hopefully the buildfarm will find that
out in short order.

Unlike the previous commit, no back-patch, since this is just cleanup
not a prerequisite for a bug fix.

Andrew Dunstan efd7f8e365 Work around Msys weakness in Testlib.pm's command_like()
When output of IPC::Run::run () is redirected to scalar references, in
certain circumstances the Msys perl does not correctly detect that the
end of file has been seen, making the test hang indefinitely. One such
circumstance is when the command is 'pg_ctl start', and such a change
was made in commit f13ea95f9e. The workaround, which only applies on
MSys, is to redirect the output to temporary files and then read them in
when the process has finished.

Tom Lane c95275fc20 Fix broken link-command-line ordering for libpgfeutils.
In the frontend Makefiles that pull in libpgfeutils, we'd generally
done it like this:

LDFLAGS += -L$(top_builddir)/src/fe_utils -lpgfeutils $(libpq_pgport)

That method is badly broken, as seen in bug #14742 from Chris Ruprecht.
The -L flag for src/fe_utils ends up being placed after whatever random
-L flags are in LDFLAGS already. That puts us at risk of pulling in
libpgfeutils.a from some previous installation rather than the freshly
built one in src/fe_utils. Also, the lack of an "override" is hazardous
if someone tries to specify some LDFLAGS on the make command line.

The correct way to do it is like this:

override LDFLAGS := -L$(top_builddir)/src/fe_utils -lpgfeutils $(libpq_pgport) $(LDFLAGS)

so that libpgfeutils, along with libpq, libpgport, and libpgcommon, are
guaranteed to be pulled in from the build tree and not from any referenced
system directory, because their -L flags will appear first.

In some places we'd been even lazier and done it like this:

LDFLAGS += -L$(top_builddir)/src/fe_utils -lpgfeutils -lpq

which is subtly wrong in an additional way: on platforms where we can't
restrict the symbols exported by libpq.so, it allows libpgfeutils to
latch onto libpgport and libpgcommon symbols from libpq.so, rather than
directly from those static libraries as intended. This carries hazards
like those explained in the comments for the libpq_pgport macro.

In addition to fixing the broken libpgfeutils usages, I tried to
standardize on using $(libpq_pgport) like so:

override LDFLAGS := $(libpq_pgport) $(LDFLAGS)

even where libpgfeutils is not in the picture. This makes no difference
right now but will hopefully discourage future mistakes of the same ilk.
And it's more like the way we handle CPPFLAGS in libpq-using Makefiles.

In passing, just for consistency, make pgbench include PTHREAD_LIBS the
same way everyplace else does, ie just after LIBS rather than in some
random place in the command line. This might have practical effect if
there are -L switches in that macro on some platform.

It looks to me like the MSVC build scripts are not affected by this
error, but someone more familiar with them than I might want to double
check.

Back-patch to 9.6 where libpgfeutils was introduced. In 9.6, the hazard
this error creates is that a reinstallation might link to the prior
installation's copy of libpgfeutils.a and thereby fail to absorb a
minor-version bug fix.

Tom Lane f13ea95f9e Change pg_ctl to detect server-ready by watching status in postmaster.pid.
Traditionally, "pg_ctl start -w" has waited for the server to become
ready to accept connections by attempting a connection once per second.
That has the major problem that connection issues (for instance, a
kernel packet filter blocking traffic) can't be reliably told apart
from server startup issues, and the minor problem that if server startup
isn't quick, we accumulate "the database system is starting up" spam
in the server log. We've hacked around many of the possible connection
issues, but it resulted in ugly and complicated code in pg_ctl.c.

In commit c61559ec3, I changed the probe rate to every tenth of a second.
That prompted Jeff Janes to complain that the log-spam problem had become
much worse. In the ensuing discussion, Andres Freund pointed out that
we could dispense with connection attempts altogether if the postmaster
were changed to report its status in postmaster.pid, which "pg_ctl start"
already relies on being able to read. This patch implements that, teaching
postmaster.c to report a status string into the pidfile at the same
state-change points already identified as being of interest for systemd
status reporting (cf commit 7d17e683f). pg_ctl no longer needs to link
with libpq at all; all its functions now depend on reading server files.

In support of this, teach AddToDataDirLockFile() to allow addition of
postmaster.pid lines in not-necessarily-sequential order. This is needed
on Windows where the SHMEM_KEY line will never be written at all. We still
have the restriction that we don't want to truncate the pidfile; document
the reasons for that a bit better.

Also, fix the pg_ctl TAP tests so they'll notice if "start -w" mode
is broken --- before, they'd just wait out the sixty seconds until
the loop gives up, and then report success anyway. (Yes, I found that
out the hard way.)

While at it, arrange for pg_ctl to not need to #include miscadmin.h;
as a rather low-level backend header, requiring that to be compilable
client-side is pretty dubious. This requires moving the #define's
associated with the pidfile into a new header file, and moving
PG_BACKEND_VERSIONSTR someplace else. For lack of a clearly better
"someplace else", I put it into port.h, beside the declaration of
find_other_exec(), since most users of that macro are passing the value to
find_other_exec(). (initdb still depends on miscadmin.h, but at least
pg_ctl and pg_upgrade no longer do.)

In passing, fix main.c so that PG_BACKEND_VERSIONSTR actually defines the
output of "postgres -V", which remarkably it had never done before.

Tom Lane c61559ec3a Reduce pg_ctl's reaction time when waiting for postmaster start/stop.
pg_ctl has traditionally waited one second between probes for whether
the start or stop request has completed. That behavior was embodied
in the original shell script written in 1999 (commit 5b912b089) and
I doubt anyone's questioned it since. Nowadays, machines are a lot
faster, and the shell script is long since replaced by C code, so it's
fair to reconsider how long we ought to wait.

This patch adjusts the coding so that the wait time can be any even
divisor of 1 second, and sets the actual probe rate to 10 per second.
That's based on experimentation with the src/test/recovery TAP tests,
which include a lot of postmaster starts and stops. This patch alone
reduces the (non-parallelized) runtime of those tests from ~4m30s to
~3m5s on my machine. Increasing the probe rate further doesn't help
much, so this seems like a good number.

In the real world this probably won't have much impact, since people
don't start/stop production postmasters often, and the shutdown checkpoint
usually takes nontrivial time too. But it makes development work and
testing noticeably snappier, and that's good enough reason for me.

Also, by reducing the dead time in postmaster restart sequences, this
change has made it easier to reproduce some bugs that have been lurking
for awhile. Patches for those will follow.

Tom Lane 382ceffdf7 Phase 3 of pgindent updates.
Don't move parenthesized lines to the left, even if that means they
flow past the right margin.

By default, BSD indent lines up statement continuation lines that are
within parentheses so that they start just to the right of the preceding
left parenthesis. However, traditionally, if that resulted in the
continuation line extending to the right of the desired right margin,
then indent would push it left just far enough to not overrun the margin,
if it could do so without making the continuation line start to the left of
the current statement indent. That makes for a weird mix of indentations
unless one has been completely rigid about never violating the 80-column
limit.

This behavior has been pretty universally panned by Postgres developers.
Hence, disable it with indent's new -lpl switch, so that parenthesized
lines are always lined up with the preceding left paren.

This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent
changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects.

Tom Lane c7b8998ebb Phase 2 of pgindent updates.
Change pg_bsd_indent to follow upstream rules for placement of comments
to the right of code, and remove pgindent hack that caused comments
following #endif to not obey the general rule.

Commit e3860ffa4d wasn't actually using
the published version of pg_bsd_indent, but a hacked-up version that
tried to minimize the amount of movement of comments to the right of
code. The situation of interest is where such a comment has to be
moved to the right of its default placement at column 33 because there's
code there. BSD indent has always moved right in units of tab stops
in such cases --- but in the previous incarnation, indent was working
in 8-space tab stops, while now it knows we use 4-space tabs. So the
net result is that in about half the cases, such comments are placed
one tab stop left of before. This is better all around: it leaves
more room on the line for comment text, and it means that in such
cases the comment uniformly starts at the next 4-space tab stop after
the code, rather than sometimes one and sometimes two tabs after.

Also, ensure that comments following #endif are indented the same
as comments following other preprocessor commands such as #else.
That inconsistency turns out to have been self-inflicted damage
from a poorly-thought-through post-indent "fixup" in pgindent.

This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent
changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects.

Noah Misch 2ffa869620 Accept pg_ctl timeout from the PGCTLTIMEOUT environment variable.
Many automated test suites call pg_ctl. Buildfarm members axolotl,
hornet, mandrill, shearwater, sungazer and tern have failed when server
shutdown took longer than the pg_ctl default 60s timeout. This addition
permits slow hosts to easily raise the timeout without us editing a
--timeout argument into every test suite pg_ctl call. Back-patch to 9.1

Tom Lane 3971f64843 Temporarily make pg_ctl and server shutdown a whole lot chattier.
This is a quick hack, due to be reverted when its purpose has been served,
to try to gather information about why some of the buildfarm critters
regularly fail with "postmaster does not shut down" complaints. Maybe they
are just really overloaded, but maybe something else is going on. Hence,
instrument pg_ctl to print the current time when it starts waiting for
postmaster shutdown and when it gives up, and add a lot of logging of the
current time in the server's checkpoint and shutdown code paths.

No attempt has been made to make this pretty. I'm not even totally sure
if it will build on Windows, but we'll soon find out.

Alvaro Herrera a967613911 Windows: Make pg_ctl reliably detect service status
pg_ctl is using isatty() to verify whether the process is running in a
terminal, and if not it sends its output to Windows' Event Log ... which
does the wrong thing when the output has been redirected to a pipe, as
reported in bug #13592.

To fix, make pg_ctl use the code we already have to detect service-ness:
in the master branch, move src/backend/port/win32/security.c to src/port
(with suitable tweaks so that it runs properly in backend and frontend
environments); pg_ctl already has access to pgport so it Just Works. In
older branches, that's likely to cause trouble, so instead duplicate the
required code in pg_ctl.c.

Alvaro Herrera 1caef31d9e Refactor Perl test code
The original code was a bit clunky; make it more amenable for further
reuse by creating a new Perl package PostgresNode, which is an
object-oriented representation of a single server, with some support
routines such as init, start, stop, psql. This serves as a better basis
on which to build further test code, and enables writing tests that use
more than one server without too much complication.

This commit modifies a lot of the existing test files, mostly to remove
explicit calls to system commands (pg_ctl) replacing them with method
calls of a PostgresNode object. The result is quite a bit more
straightforward.

Also move some initialization code to BEGIN and INIT blocks instead of
having it straight in as top-level code.

This commit also introduces package RecursiveCopy so that we can copy
whole directories without having to depend on packages that may not be
present on vanilla Perl 5.8 installations.

I also ran perltidy on the modified files, which changes some code sites
that are not otherwise touched by this patch. I tried to avoid this,
but it ended up being more trouble than it's worth.

At least OpenBSD, NetBSD, and Windows don't support it. This repairs

likely to need this change. Back-patch to 9.1 (all supported versions).

Tom Lane 6bcce25801 Fix "pg_ctl start -w" to test child process status directly.
pg_ctl start with -w previously relied on a heuristic that the postmaster
would surely always manage to create postmaster.pid within five seconds.
Unfortunately, that fails much more often than we would like on some of the
slower, more heavily loaded buildfarm members.

We have known for quite some time that we could remove the need for that
heuristic on Unix by using fork/exec instead of system() to launch the
postmaster. This allows us to know the exact PID of the postmaster, which
allows near-certain verification that the postmaster.pid file is the one
we want and not a leftover, and it also lets us use waitpid() to detect
reliably whether the child postmaster has exited or not.

What was blocking this change was not wanting to rewrite the Windows
version of start_postmaster() to avoid use of CMD.EXE. That's doable
in theory but would require fooling about with stdout/stderr redirection,
and getting the handling of quote-containing postmaster switches to
stay the same might be rather ticklish. However, we realized that
we don't have to do that to fix the problem, because we can test
whether the shell process has exited as a proxy for whether the
postmaster is still alive. That doesn't allow an exact check of the
PID in postmaster.pid, but we're no worse off than before in that
respect; and we do get to get rid of the heuristic about how long the
postmaster might take to create postmaster.pid.

On Unix, this change means that a second "pg_ctl start -w" immediately
after another such command will now reliably fail, whereas previously
it would succeed if done within two seconds of the earlier command.
Since that's a saner behavior anyway, it's fine. On Windows, the case can
still succeed within the same time window, since pg_ctl can't tell that the
earlier postmaster's postmaster.pid isn't the pidfile it is looking for.
To ensure stable test results on Windows, we can insert a short sleep into
the test script for pg_ctl, ensuring that the existing pidfile looks stale.
This hack can be removed if we ever do rewrite start_postmaster(), but that
no longer seems like a high-priority thing to do.

Back-patch to all supported versions, both because the current behavior
is buggy and because we must do that if we want the buildfarm failures
to go away.

On Windows, use listen_address=127.0.0.1 to allow TCP connections. We were
already using "pg_regress --config-auth" to set up HBA appropriately. The
standard_initdb helper function now sets up the server's
unix_socket_directories or listen_addresses in the config file, so that
they don't need to be specified in the pg_ctl command line anymore. That
way, the pg_ctl invocations in test programs don't need to differ between
Windows and Unix.

Add another helper function to configure the server's pg_hba.conf to allow
replication connections. The configuration is done similarly to "pg_regress
--config-auth": trust on domain sockets on Unix, and SSPI authentication on
Windows.

Replace calls to "cat" and "touch" programs with built-in perl code, as
those programs don't normally exist on Windows.

Add instructions in the docs on how to install IPC::Run on Windows. Adjust

Create a log file for each test run. Stdout and stderr of the test script,
as well as any subprocesses run as part of the test, are redirected to
the log file. This makes it a lot easier to debug test failures. Also print
the test output (ok 12 - ... messages) to the log file, and the command
line of any external programs executed with the system_or_bail and run_log
functions. This makes it a lot easier to debug failing tests.

Modify some of the pg_ctl and other command invocations to not use 'silent'
or 'quiet' options, and don't redirect output to /dev/null, so that you get
all the information in the log instead.

In the passing, construct some command lines in a way that works if $tempdir
contains quote-characters. I haven't systematically gone through all of
them or tested that, so I don't know if this is enough to make that work.

pg_rewind tests had a custom mechanism for creating a similar log file. Use
the new generic facility instead.

Tom Lane 785941cdc3 Tweak __attribute__-wrapping macros for better pgindent results.
This improves on commit bbfd7edae5 by
making two simple changes:

* pg_attribute_noreturn now takes parentheses, ie pg_attribute_noreturn().
Likewise pg_attribute_unused(), pg_attribute_packed().  This reduces
pgindent's tendency to misformat declarations involving them.

* attributes are now always attached to function declarations, not
definitions. Previously some places were taking creative shortcuts,
which were not merely candidates for bad misformatting by pgindent
but often were outright wrong anyway. (It does little good to put a
noreturn annotation where callers can't see it.) In any case, if
we would like to believe that these macros can be used with non-gcc
compilers, we should avoid gratuitous variance in usage patterns.

I also went through and manually improved the formatting of a lot of
declarations, and got rid of excessively repetitive (and now obsolete
anyway) comments informing the reader what pg_attribute_printf is for.
2015-03-26 14:03:25 -04:00
Andres Freund bbfd7edae5 Add macros wrapping all usage of gcc's __attribute__.
Until now __attribute__() was defined to be empty for all compilers but
gcc. That's problematic because it prevents using it in other compilers;
which is necessary e.g. for atomics portability. It's also just
generally dubious to do so in a header as widely included as c.h.

Instead add pg_attribute_format_arg, pg_attribute_printf,
pg_attribute_noreturn macros which are implemented in the compilers that
understand them. Also add pg_attribute_noreturn and pg_attribute_packed,
but don't provide fallbacks, since they can affect functionality.

This means that external code that, possibly unwittingly, relied on
__attribute__ defined to be empty on !gcc compilers may now run into
warnings or errors on those compilers. But there shouldn't be many
occurances of that and it's hard to work around...

this doesn't change the behavior of those. But user-supplied commands, like

There's no really compelling reason to refuse to do these read-only,
non-server-starting options as root, and there's at least one good
reason to allow -C: pg_ctl uses -C to find out the true data directory
location when pointed at a config-only directory. On Windows, this is
done before dropping administrator privileges, which means that pg_ctl
fails for administrators if and only if a config-only layout is used.

Since the root-privilege check is done so early in startup, it's a bit
awkward to check for these switches. Make the somewhat arbitrary
decision that we'll only skip the root check if -C is the first switch.
This is not just to make the code a bit simpler: it also guarantees that
we can't misinterpret a --boot mode switch. (While AuxiliaryProcessMain
doesn't currently recognize any such switch, it might have one in the
future.) This is no particular problem for pg_ctl, and since the whole
behavior is undocumented anyhow, it's not a documentation issue either.
(--describe-config only works as the first switch anyway, so this is
no restriction for that case either.)

Tom Lane 79193c75f8 Fix assorted issues in pg_ctl's pgwin32_CommandLine().
Ensure that the invocation command for postgres or pg_ctl runservice
double-quotes the executable's pathname; failure to do this leads to
trouble when the path contains spaces.

Also, ensure that the path ends in ".exe" in both cases and uses
backslashes rather than slashes as directory separators. The latter issue
is reported to confuse some third-party tools such as Symantec Backup Exec.

Also, rewrite the function to avoid buffer overrun issues by using a
PQExpBuffer instead of a fixed-size static buffer. Combinations of
very long executable pathnames and very long data directory pathnames
could have caused trouble before, for example.

Back-patch to all active branches, since this code has been like this
for a long while.

This keeps the usual trigger file name unchanged from 9.2, avoiding nasty
issues if you use a pre-9.3 pg_ctl binary with a 9.3 server or vice versa.
The fallback behavior of creating a full checkpoint before starting up is now
triggered by a file called "fallback_promote". That can be useful for
debugging purposes, but we don't expect any users to have to resort to that
and we might want to remove that in the future, which is why the fallback
mechanism is undocumented.

Peter Eisentraut 8730618458 pg_ctl: Add idempotent option
This changes the behavior of the start and stop actions to exit
successfully if the server was already started or stopped.

This changes the default behavior of the start action: Before, if the
server was already running, it would print a message and succeed. Now,
that situation will result in an error. When running in idempotent
mode, no message is printed and pg_ctl exits successfully.

It was considered to just make the idempotent behavior the default and
only option, but pg_upgrade needs the old behavior.

Tom Lane da5aeccf64 Move pqsignal() to libpgport.
We had two copies of this function in the backend and libpq, which was
already pretty bogus, but it turns out that we need it in some other
programs that don't use libpq (such as pg_test_fsync). So put it where
it probably should have been all along. The signal-mask-initialization
support in src/backend/libpq/pqsignal.c stays where it is, though, since
we only need that in the backend.

Alvaro Herrera 8396447cdb Create libpgcommon, and move pg_malloc et al to it
libpgcommon is a new static library to allow sharing code among the
various frontend programs and backend; this lets us eliminate duplicate
implementations of common routines. We avoid libpgport, because that's
intended as a place for porting issues; per discussion, it seems better
to keep them separate.

The first use case, and the only implemented by this patch, is pg_malloc
and friends, which many frontend programs were already using.

At the same time, we can use this to provide palloc emulation functions
for the frontend; this way, some palloc-using files in the backend can
also be used by the frontend cleanly. To do this, we change palloc() in
the backend to be a function instead of a macro on top of
MemoryContextAlloc(). This was previously believed to cause loss of
performance, but this implementation has been tweaked by Tom and Andres
so that on modern compilers it provides a slight improvement over the
previous one.

This lets us clean up some places that were already with
localized hacks.

Most of the pg_malloc/palloc changes in this patch were authored by
Andres Freund. Zoltán Böszörményi also independently provided a form of
that. libpgcommon infrastructure was authored by Álvaro.

Heikki Linnakangas 2a49585e2b Further tweaking of the readfile() function in pg_ctl.
Don't leak a file descriptor if the file is empty or we can't read its size.

Expect there to be a newline at the end of the last line, too. If there
isn't, ignore anything after the last newline. This makes it a tiny bit
more robust in case the file is appended to concurrently, so that we don't
return the last line if it hasn't been fully written yet. And this makes
the code a bit less obscure, anyway. Per Tom Lane's suggestion.

Backpatch to all supported branches.

Heikki Linnakangas 5c89684e08 Fix race condition in pg_ctl reading postmaster.pid.
If postmaster changed postmaster.pid while pg_ctl was reading it, pg_ctl
could overrun the buffer it allocated for the file. Fix by reading the
whole file to memory with one read() call.

initdb contains an identical copy of the readfile() function, but the files
that initdb reads are static, not modified concurrently. Nevertheless, add
a simple bounds-check there, if only to silence static analysis tools.

Per report from Dave Vitek. Backpatch to all supported branches.

Tom Lane 09ac603c36 Work around unportable behavior of malloc(0) and realloc(NULL, 0).
On some platforms these functions return NULL, rather than the more common
practice of returning a pointer to a zero-sized block of memory. Hack our
various wrapper functions to hide the difference by substituting a size
request of 1. This is probably not so important for the callers, who
should never touch the block anyway if they asked for size 0 --- but it's
important for the wrapper functions themselves, which mistakenly treated
the NULL result as an out-of-memory failure. This broke at least pg_dump
for the case of no user-defined aggregates, as per report from
Matthew Carrington.

Back-patch to 9.2 to fix the pg_dump issue. Given the lack of previous
complaints, it seems likely that there is no live bug in previous releases,
even though some of these functions were in place before that.

Tom Lane a563d94180 Standardize naming of malloc/realloc/strdup wrapper functions.
We had a number of variants on the theme of "malloc or die", with the
majority named like "pg_malloc", but by no means all. Standardize on the
names pg_malloc, pg_malloc0, pg_realloc, pg_strdup. Get rid of pg_calloc
entirely in favor of using pg_malloc0.

This is an essentially cosmetic change, so no back-patch. (I did find
a couple of places where psql and pg_dump were using plain malloc or
strdup instead of the pg_ versions, but they don't look significant
enough to bother back-patching.)

Tom Lane c9b0cbe98b Support having multiple Unix-domain sockets per postmaster.
Replace unix_socket_directory with unix_socket_directories, which is a list
of socket directories, and adjust postmaster's code to allow zero or more
Unix-domain sockets to be created.

This is mostly a straightforward change, but since the Unix sockets ought
to be created after the TCP/IP sockets for safety reasons (better chance
of detecting a port number conflict), AddToDataDirLockFile needs to be
fixed to support out-of-order updates of data directory lockfile lines.
That's a change that had been foreseen to be necessary someday anyway.

Commit aaa6e1def2 introduced multiple hazards
in the case where pg_ctl is executed with neither a -D switch nor any
PGDATA environment variable. It would dump core on machines which are
unforgiving about printf("%s", NULL), or failing that possibly give a
rather unhelpful complaint about being unable to execute "postgres -C",
rather than the logically prior complaint about not being told where the
data directory is.

Edmund Horner's report suggests that there is another, Windows-specific
hazard here, but I'm not the person to fix that; it would in any case only
be significant when trying to use a config-only PGDATA pointer.
