Heikki Linnakangas 5c6df67e0c Fix building with LibreSSL.
LibreSSL defines OPENSSL_VERSION_NUMBER to claim that it is version 2.0.0,
but it doesn't have the functions added in OpenSSL 1.1.0. Add autoconf
checks for the individual functions we need, and stop relying on
OPENSSL_VERSION_NUMBER.

Backport to 9.5 and 9.6, like the patch that broke this. In the
back-branches, there are still a few OPENSSL_VERSION_NUMBER checks left,
to check for OpenSSL 0.9.8 or 0.9.7. I left them as they were - LibreSSL
has all those functions, so they work as intended.

Heikki Linnakangas 593d4e47db Support OpenSSL 1.1.0.
Changes needed to build at all:

- Check for SSL_new in configure, now that SSL_library_init is a macro.
- Do not access struct members directly. This includes some new code in
  pgcrypto, to use the resource owner mechanism to ensure that we don't
  leak OpenSSL handles, now that we can't embed them in other structs
  anymore.
- RAND_SSLeay() -> RAND_OpenSSL()

Changes that were needed to silence deprecation warnings, but were not
strictly necessary:

- RAND_pseudo_bytes() -> RAND_bytes().
- SSL_library_init() and OpenSSL_config() -> OPENSSL_init_ssl()
- ASN1_STRING_data() -> ASN1_STRING_get0_data()
- DH_generate_parameters() -> DH_generate_parameters()
- Locking callbacks are not needed with OpenSSL 1.1.0 anymore. (Good
  riddance!)

Also change references to SSLEAY_VERSION_NUMBER with OPENSSL_VERSION_NUMBER,
for the sake of consistency. OPENSSL_VERSION_NUMBER has existed since time
immemorial.

Fix SSL test suite to work with OpenSSL 1.1.0. CA certificates must have
the "CA:true" basic constraint extension now, or OpenSSL will refuse them.
Regenerate the test certificates with that. The "openssl" binary, used to
generate the certificates, is also now more picky, and throws an error
if an X509 extension is specified in "req_extensions", but that section
is empty.

Backpatch to all supported branches, per popular demand. In back-branches,
we still support OpenSSL 0.9.7 and above. OpenSSL 0.9.6 should still work
too, but I didn't test it. In master, we only support 0.9.8 and above.

Heikki Linnakangas ec136d19b2 Move code shared between libpq and backend from backend/libpq/ to common/.
When building libpq, ip.c and md5.c were symlinked or copied from
src/backend/libpq into src/interfaces/libpq, but now that we have a
directory specifically for routines that are shared between the server and
client binaries, src/common/, move them there.

Some routines in ip.c were only used in the backend. Keep those in
src/backend/libpq, but rename to ifaddr.c to avoid confusion with the file
that's now in common.

Fix the comment in src/common/Makefile to reflect how libpq actually links
those files.

There are two more files that libpq symlinks directly from src/backend:
encnames.c and wchar.c. I don't feel compelled to move those right now,
though.

Heikki Linnakangas 9b7cd59af1 Remove support for OpenSSL versions older than 0.9.8.
OpenSSL officially only supports 1.0.1 and newer. Some OS distributions
still provide patches for 0.9.8, but anything older than that is not
interesting anymore. Let's simplify things by removing compatibility code.

Tom Lane 26fa446da6 Add a nonlocalized version of the severity field to client error messages.
This has been requested a few times, but the use-case for it was never
entirely clear.  The reason for adding it now is that transmission of
error reports from parallel workers fails when NLS is active, because
pq_parse_errornotice() wrongly assumes that the existing severity field
is nonlocalized.  There are other ways we could have fixed that, but the
other options were basically kluges, whereas this way provides something
that's at least arguably a useful feature along with the bug fix.

Per report from Jakob Egger.  Back-patch into 9.6, because otherwise
parallel query is essentially unusable in non-English locales.  The
problem exists in 9.5 as well, but we don't want to risk changing
on-the-wire behavior in 9.5 (even though the possibility of new error
fields is specifically called out in the protocol document).  It may
be sufficient to leave the issue unfixed in 9.5, given the very limited
usefulness of pq_parse_errornotice in that version.

Tom Lane a3bce17ef1 Automate the maintenance of SO_MINOR_VERSION for our shared libraries.
Up to now we've manually adjusted these numbers in several different
Makefiles at the start of each development cycle.  While that's not
much work, it's easily forgotten, so let's get rid of it by setting
the SO_MINOR_VERSION values directly from $(MAJORVERSION).

In the case of libpq, this dev cycle's value of SO_MINOR_VERSION happens
to be "10" anyway, so this switch is transparent.  For ecpg's shared
libraries, this will result in skipping one or two minor version numbers
between v9.6 and v10, which seems like no big problem; and it was a bit
inconsistent that they didn't have equal minor version numbers anyway.

This is a good bit more complicated than the average new-version stamping
commit, because it includes various adjustments in pursuit of changing
from three-part to two-part version numbers.  It's likely some further
work will be needed around that change; but this is enough to get through
the regression tests, at least in Unix builds.

Noah Misch fcd15f1358 Obstruct shell, SQL, and conninfo injection via database and role names.
Due to simplistic quoting and confusion of database names with conninfo
strings, roles with the CREATEDB or CREATEROLE option could escalate to
superuser privileges when a superuser next ran certain maintenance
commands.  The new coding rule for PQconnectdbParams() calls, documented
at conninfo_array_parse(), is to pass expand_dbname=true and wrap
literal database names in a trivial connection string.  Escape
zero-length values in appendConnStrVal().  Back-patch to 9.1 (all
supported versions).

Tom Lane 69dc5ae408 Teach libpq to decode server version correctly from future servers.
Beginning with the next development cycle, PG servers will report two-part
not three-part version numbers.  Fix libpq so that it will compute the
correct numeric representation of such server versions for reporting by
PQserverVersion().  It's desirable to get this into the field and
back-patched ASAP, so that older clients are more likely to understand the
new server version numbering by the time any such servers are in the wild.

(The results with an old client would probably not be catastrophic anyway
for a released server; for example "10.1" would be interpreted as 100100
which would be wrong in detail but would not likely cause an old client to
misbehave badly.  But "10devel" or "10beta1" would result in sversion==0
which at best would result in disabling all use of modern features.)

Tom Lane cd9b4f24ce Remove extraneous leading whitespace in Windows build script.
Apparently, at least some versions of Microsoft's shell fail on variable
assignments that have leading whitespace.  This instance, introduced in
commit 680513ab7, managed to escape notice for awhile because it's only
invoked if building with OpenSSL.  Per bug #14185 from Torben Dannhauer.

Tom Lane e7bcde8ca0 Remove unnecessary definition of _WIN64 in libpq/win32.mak.
In commit b0e40d1893, I should have just
removed the /D switch defining WIN64.  The reason the code worked before
is that all Windows64 compilers automatically predefine _WIN64.  Perhaps
at one time we had code that depended on WIN64 being defined, but it's
long gone, and we should not encourage any reappearance.  Per discussion
with Christian Ullrich.

Tom Lane b0e40d1893 Fix two places that thought Windows64 is indicated by WIN64 macro.
Everyplace else thinks it's _WIN64, so make these places fall in line.

The pg_regress.c usage is not going to result in any change in behavior,
only suppressing (or not) a compiler warning about downcasting HANDLEs.
So there seems no need for back-patching there.

The libpq/win32.mak usage might represent an actual bug, if anyone were
using this script to build for Windows64, which perhaps nobody is.
Given the lack of field complaints, no back-patch here either.

pg_regress.c problem found by Christian Ullrich, the other by me.

Peter Eisentraut 7c7d4fddab Distrust external OpenSSL clients; clear err queue
OpenSSL has an unfortunate tendency to mix per-session state error
handling with per-thread error handling.  This can cause problems when
programs that link to libpq with OpenSSL enabled have some other use of
OpenSSL; without care, one caller of OpenSSL may cause problems for the
other caller.  Backend code might similarly be affected, for example
when a third party extension independently uses OpenSSL without taking
the appropriate precautions.

To fix, don't trust other users of OpenSSL to clear the per-thread error
queue.  Instead, clear the entire per-thread queue ahead of certain I/O
operations when it appears that there might be trouble (these I/O
operations mostly need to call SSL_get_error() to check for success,
which relies on the queue being empty).  This is slightly aggressive,
but it's pretty clear that the other callers have a very dubious claim
to ownership of the per-thread queue.  Do this is both frontend and
backend code.

Finally, be more careful about clearing our own error queue, so as to
not cause these problems ourself.  It's possibly that control previously
did not always reach SSLerrmessage(), where ERR_get_error() was supposed
to be called to clear the queue's earliest code.  Make sure
ERR_get_error() is always called, so as to spare other users of OpenSSL
the possibility of similar problems caused by libpq (as opposed to
problems caused by a third party OpenSSL library like PHP's OpenSSL
extension).  Again, do this is both frontend and backend code.

Tom Lane e3161b231c Add libpq support for recreating an error message with different verbosity.
Often, upon getting an unexpected error in psql, one's first wish is that
the verbosity setting had been higher; for example, to be able to see the
schema-name field or the server code location info.  Up to now the only way
has been to adjust the VERBOSITY variable and repeat the failing query.
That's a pain, and it doesn't work if the error isn't reproducible.

This commit adds support in libpq for regenerating the error message for
an existing error PGresult at any desired verbosity level.  This is almost
just a matter of refactoring the existing code into a subroutine, but there
is one bit of possibly-needed information that was not getting put into
PGresults: the text of the last query sent to the server.  We must add that
string to the contents of an error PGresult.  But we only need to save it
if it might be used, which with the existing error-formatting code only
happens if there is a PG_DIAG_STATEMENT_POSITION error field, which is
probably pretty rare for errors in production situations.  So really the
overhead when the feature isn't used should be negligible.

Tom Lane 2306696004 Fix oversight in getParamDescriptions(), and improve comments.
When getParamDescriptions was changed to handle out-of-memory better
by cribbing error recovery logic from getRowDescriptions/getAnotherTuple,
somebody omitted to copy the stanza about checking for excess data in
the message.  But you need to do that, since continue'ing out of the
switch in pqParseInput3 means no such check gets applied there anymore.
Noted while looking at Michael Paquier's patch that made yet another
copy of this advance_and_error logic.

(This whole business desperately needs refactoring, because I sure don't
want to see a dozen copies of this code, but that's where we seem to be
headed.  What's more, the "suspend parsing on EOF return" convention is a
holdover from protocol 2 and shouldn't exist at all in protocol 3, because
we don't process partial messages anymore.  But for now, just fix the
obvious bug.)

Also, fix some wrong/missing comments about what the API spec is
for these three functions.

This doesn't seem worthy of back-patching, even though it's a bug;
the case shouldn't ever arise in the field.

Tom Lane 7abc157165 Avoid possibly-unsafe use of Windows' FormatMessage() function.
Whenever this function is used with the FORMAT_MESSAGE_FROM_SYSTEM flag,
it's good practice to include FORMAT_MESSAGE_IGNORE_INSERTS as well.
Otherwise, if the message contains any %n insertion markers, the function
will try to fetch argument strings to substitute --- which we are not
passing, possibly leading to a crash.  This is exactly analogous to the
rule about not giving printf() a format string you're not in control of.

Back-patch to all supported branches.

Heikki Linnakangas 7b96bf445a Fix out-of-memory error handling in ParameterDescription message processing.
If libpq ran out of memory while constructing the result set, it would hang,
waiting for more data from the server, which might never arrive. To fix,
distinguish between out-of-memory error and not-enough-data cases, and give
a proper error message back to the client on OOM.

There are still similar issues in handling COPY start messages, but let's
handle that as a separate patch.

Tom Lane 40cb21f70b Improve PQhost() to return useful data for default Unix-socket connections.
Previously, if no host information had been specified at connection time,
PQhost() would return NULL (unless you are on Windows, in which case you
got "localhost").  This is an unhelpful definition for a couple of reasons:
it can cause corner-case crashes in applications (cf commit c5ef8ce53d),
and there's no well-defined way for applications to find out the socket
directory path that's actually in use.  As an example of the latter
problem, psql substituted DEFAULT_PGSOCKET_DIR for NULL in a couple of
places, but this is subtly wrong because it's conceivable that psql is
using a libpq shared library that was built with a different setting.

Hence, change PQhost() to return DEFAULT_PGSOCKET_DIR when appropriate,
and strip out the now-dead substitutions in psql.  (There is still one
remaining reference to DEFAULT_PGSOCKET_DIR in psql, in prompt.c, which
I don't see a nice way to get rid of.  But it only controls a prompt
abbreviation decision, so it seems noncritical.)

Also update the docs for PQhost, which had never previously mentioned
the possibility of a socket directory path being returned.  In passing
fix the outright-incorrect code comment about PGconn.pgunixsocket.

Tom Lane c405918858 Fix unwanted flushing of libpq's input buffer when socket EOF is seen.
In commit 210eb9b743 I centralized libpq's logic for closing down
the backend communication socket, and made the new pqDropConnection
routine always reset the I/O buffers to empty.  Many of the call sites
previously had not had such code, and while that amounted to an oversight
in some cases, there was one place where it was intentional and necessary
*not* to flush the input buffer: pqReadData should never cause that to
happen, since we probably still want to process whatever data we read.

This is the true cause of the problem Robert was attempting to fix in
c3e7c24a1d, namely that libpq no longer reported the backend's final
ERROR message before reporting "server closed the connection unexpectedly".
But that only accidentally fixed it, by invoking parseInput before the
input buffer got flushed; and very likely there are timing scenarios
where we'd still lose the message before processing it.

To fix, pass a flag to pqDropConnection to tell it whether to flush the
input buffer or not.  On review I think flushing is actually correct for
every other call site.

Back-patch to 9.3 where the problem was introduced.  In HEAD, also improve
the comments added by c3e7c24a1d.

Robert Haas c3e7c24a1d libpq: Notice errors a backend may have sent just before dying.
At least since the introduction of Hot Standby, the backend has
sometimes sent fatal errors even when no client query was in
progress, assuming that the client would receive it.  However,
pqHandleSendFailure was not in sync with this assumption, and
only tries to catch notices and notifies.  Add a parseInput call
to the loop there to fix.

Andres Freund suggested the fix.  Comments are by me.

Tom Lane 9042f58342 Rename PQsslAttributes() to PQsslAttributeNames(), and const-ify fully.
Per discussion, the original name was a bit misleading, and
PQsslAttributeNames() seems more apropos.  It's not quite too late to
change this in 9.5, so let's change it while we can.

Also, make sure that the pointer array is const, not only the pointed-to
strings.

Minor documentation wordsmithing while at it.

Tom Lane 60f1e6bc13 Fix poor errno handling in libpq's version of our custom OpenSSL BIO.
Thom Brown reported that SSL connections didn't seem to work on Windows in
9.5.  Asif Naeem figured out that the cause was my_sock_read() looking at
"errno" when it needs to look at "SOCK_ERRNO".  This mistake was introduced
in commit 680513ab79, which cloned the
backend's custom SSL BIO code into libpq, and didn't translate the errno
handling properly.  Moreover, it introduced unnecessary errno save/restore
logic, which was particularly confusing because it was incomplete; and it
failed to check for all three of EINTR, EAGAIN, and EWOULDBLOCK in
my_sock_write.  (That might not be necessary; but since we're copying
well-tested backend code that does do that, it seems prudent to copy it
faithfully.)

Tom Lane 0426f349ef Rearrange the handling of error context reports.
Remove the code in plpgsql that suppressed the innermost line of CONTEXT
for messages emitted by RAISE commands.  That was never more than a quick
backwards-compatibility hack, and it's pretty silly in cases where the
RAISE is nested in several levels of function.  What's more, it violated
our design theory that verbosity of error reports should be controlled
on the client side not the server side.

To alleviate the resulting noise increase, introduce a feature in libpq
and psql whereby the CONTEXT field of messages can be suppressed, either
always or only for non-error messages.  Printing CONTEXT for errors only
is now their default behavior.

The actual code changes here are pretty small, but the effects on the
regression test outputs are widespread.  I had to edit some of the
alternative expected outputs by hand; hopefully the buildfarm will soon
find anything I fat-fingered.

In passing, fix up (again) the output line counts in psql's various
help displays.  Add some commentary about how to verify them.

Heikki Linnakangas 414bef30bf Improve handling of out-of-memory in libpq.
If an allocation fails in the main message handling loop, pqParseInput3
or pqParseInput2, it should not be treated as "not enough data available
yet". Otherwise libpq will wait indefinitely for more data to arrive from
the server, and gets stuck forever.

This isn't a complete fix - getParamDescriptions and getCopyStart still
have the same issue, but it's a step in the right direction.

Tom Lane 0c071936e9 Revert error-throwing wrappers for the printf family of functions.
This reverts commit 16304a0134, except
for its changes in src/port/snprintf.c; as well as commit
cac18a76bb which is no longer needed.

Fujii Masao reported that the previous commit caused failures in psql on
OS X, since if one exits the pager program early while viewing a query
result, psql sees an EPIPE error from fprintf --- and the wrapper function
thought that was reason to panic.  (It's a bit surprising that the same
does not happen on Linux.)  Further discussion among the security list
concluded that the risk of other such failures was far too great, and
that the one-size-fits-all approach to error handling embodied in the
previous patch is unlikely to be workable.

This leaves us again exposed to the possibility of the type of failure
envisioned in CVE-2015-3166.  However, that failure mode is strictly
hypothetical at this point: there is no concrete reason to believe that
an attacker could trigger information disclosure through the supposed
mechanism.  In the first place, the attack surface is fairly limited,
since so much of what the backend does with format strings goes through
stringinfo.c or psprintf(), and those already had adequate defenses.
In the second place, even granting that an unprivileged attacker could
control the occurrence of ENOMEM with some precision, it's a stretch to
believe that he could induce it just where the target buffer contains some
valuable information.  So we concluded that the risk of non-hypothetical
problems induced by the patch greatly outweighs the security risks.
We will therefore revert, and instead undertake closer analysis to
identify specific calls that may need hardening, rather than attempt a
universal solution.

We have kept the portion of the previous patch that improved snprintf.c's
handling of errors when it calls the platform's sprintf().  That seems to
be an unalloyed improvement.

Noah Misch 16304a0134 Add error-throwing wrappers for the printf family of functions.
All known standard library implementations of these functions can fail
with ENOMEM.  A caller neglecting to check for failure would experience
missing output, information exposure, or a crash.  Check return values
within wrappers and code, currently just snprintf.c, that bypasses the
wrappers.  The wrappers do not return after an error, so their callers
need not check.  Back-patch to 9.0 (all supported versions).

Popular free software standard library implementations do take pains to
bypass malloc() in simple cases, but they risk ENOMEM for floating point
numbers, positional arguments, large field widths, and large precisions.
No specification demands such caution, so this commit regards every call
to a printf family function as a potential threat.

Injecting the wrappers implicitly is a compromise between patch scope
and design goals.  I would prefer to edit each call site to name a
wrapper explicitly.  libpq and the ECPG libraries would, ideally, convey
errors to the caller rather than abort().  All that would be painfully
invasive for a back-patched security fix, hence this compromise.

Alvaro Herrera e146ca6820 psql: fix \connect with URIs and conninfo strings
This is the second try at this, after fcef161729 failed miserably and
had to be reverted: as it turns out, libpq cannot depend on libpgcommon
after all. Instead of shuffling code in the master branch, make that one
just like 9.4 and accept the duplication.  (This was all my own mistake,
not the patch submitter's).

psql was already accepting conninfo strings as the first parameter in
\connect, but the way it worked wasn't sane; some of the other
parameters would get the previous connection's values, causing it to
connect to a completely unexpected server or, more likely, not finding
any server at all because of completely wrong combinations of
parameters.

Fix by explicitely checking for a conninfo-looking parameter in the
dbname position; if one is found, use its complete specification rather
than mix with the other arguments.  Also, change tab-completion to not
try to complete conninfo/URI-looking "dbnames" and document that
conninfos are accepted as first argument.

There was a weak consensus to backpatch this, because while the behavior
of using the dbname as a conninfo is nowhere documented for \connect, it
is reasonable to expect that it works because it does work in many other
contexts.  Therefore this is backpatched all the way back to 9.0.

Tom Lane 785941cdc3 Tweak __attribute__-wrapping macros for better pgindent results.
This improves on commit bbfd7edae5 by
making two simple changes:

* pg_attribute_noreturn now takes parentheses, ie pg_attribute_noreturn().
Likewise pg_attribute_unused(), pg_attribute_packed().  This reduces
pgindent's tendency to misformat declarations involving them.

* attributes are now always attached to function declarations, not
definitions.  Previously some places were taking creative shortcuts,
which were not merely candidates for bad misformatting by pgindent
but often were outright wrong anyway.  (It does little good to put a
noreturn annotation where callers can't see it.)  In any case, if
we would like to believe that these macros can be used with non-gcc
compilers, we should avoid gratuitous variance in usage patterns.

I also went through and manually improved the formatting of a lot of
declarations, and got rid of excessively repetitive (and now obsolete
anyway) comments informing the reader what pg_attribute_printf is for.

Andres Freund bbfd7edae5 Add macros wrapping all usage of gcc's __attribute__.
Until now __attribute__() was defined to be empty for all compilers but
gcc. That's problematic because it prevents using it in other compilers;
which is necessary e.g. for atomics portability.  It's also just
generally dubious to do so in a header as widely included as c.h.

Instead add pg_attribute_format_arg, pg_attribute_printf,
pg_attribute_noreturn macros which are implemented in the compilers that
understand them. Also add pg_attribute_noreturn and pg_attribute_packed,
but don't provide fallbacks, since they can affect functionality.

This means that external code that, possibly unwittingly, relied on
__attribute__ defined to be empty on !gcc compilers may now run into
warnings or errors on those compilers. But there shouldn't be many
occurances of that and it's hard to work around...

Tom Lane ef75508efc Cast to (void *) rather than (int *) when passing int64's to PQfn().
This is a possibly-vain effort to silence a Coverity warning about
bogus endianness dependency.  The code's fine, because it takes care
of endianness issues for itself, but Coverity sees an int64 being
passed to an int* argument and not unreasonably suspects something's
wrong.  I'm not sure if putting the void* cast in the way will shut it
up; but it can't hurt and seems better from a documentation standpoint
anyway, since the pointer is not used as an int* in this code path.

Just for a bit of additional safety, verify that the result length
is 8 bytes as expected.

Back-patch to 9.3 where the code in question was added.

Tom Lane 1a0bc4c2bf Fix documentation for libpq's PQfn().
The SGML docs claimed that 1-byte integers could be sent or received with
the "isint" options, but no such behavior has ever been implemented in
pqGetInt() or pqPutInt().  The in-code documentation header for PQfn() was
even less in tune with reality, and the code itself used parameter names
matching neither the SGML docs nor its libpq-fe.h declaration.  Do a bit
of additional wordsmithing on the SGML docs while at it.

Since the business about 1-byte integers is a clear documentation bug,
back-patch to all supported branches.

Heikki Linnakangas 2a3f6e368b Fix potential deadlock with libpq non-blocking mode.
If libpq output buffer is full, pqSendSome() function tries to drain any
incoming data. This avoids deadlock, if the server e.g. sends a lot of
NOTICE messages, and blocks until we read them. However, pqSendSome() only
did that in blocking mode. In non-blocking mode, the deadlock could still
happen.

To fix, take a two-pronged approach:

1. Change the documentation to instruct that when PQflush() returns 1, you
should wait for both read- and write-ready, and call PQconsumeInput() if it
becomes read-ready. That fixes the deadlock, but applications are not going
to change overnight.

2. In pqSendSome(), drain the input buffer before returning 1. This
alleviates the problem for applications that only wait for write-ready. In
particular, a slow but steady stream of NOTICE messages during COPY FROM
STDIN will no longer cause a deadlock. The risk remains that the server
attempts to send a large burst of data and fills its output buffer, and at
the same time the client also sends enough data to fill its output buffer.
The application will deadlock if it goes to sleep, waiting for the socket
to become write-ready, before the server's data arrives. In practice,
NOTICE messages and such that the server might be sending are usually
short, so it's highly unlikely that the server would fill its output buffer
so quickly.

Backpatch to all supported versions.

Tom Lane b26e208142 Fix misparsing of empty value in conninfo_uri_parse_params().
After finding an "=" character, the pointer was advanced twice when it
should only advance once.  This is harmless as long as the value after "="
has at least one character; but if it doesn't, we'd miss the terminator
character and include too much in the value.

In principle this could lead to reading off the end of memory.  It does not
seem worth treating as a security issue though, because it would happen on
client side, and besides client logic that's taking conninfo strings from
untrusted sources has much worse security problems than this.

Heikki Linnakangas 302262d521 Add dummy PQsslAttributes function for non-SSL builds.
All the other new SSL information functions had dummy versions in
be-secure.c, but I missed PQsslAttributes(). Oops. Surprisingly, the linker
did not complain about the missing function on most platforms represented in
the buildfarm, even though it is exported, except for a few Windows systems.

Heikki Linnakangas 91fa7b4719 Add API functions to libpq to interrogate SSL related stuff.
This makes it possible to query for things like the SSL version and cipher
used, without depending on OpenSSL functions or macros. That is a good
thing if we ever get another SSL implementation.

PQgetssl() still works, but it should be considered as deprecated as it
only works with OpenSSL. In particular, PQgetSslInUse() should be used to
check if a connection uses SSL, because as soon as we have another
implementation, PQgetssl() will return NULL even if SSL is in use.

Tom Lane 586dd5d6a5 Replace a bunch more uses of strncpy() with safer coding.
strncpy() has a well-deserved reputation for being unsafe, so make an
effort to get rid of nearly all occurrences in HEAD.

A large fraction of the remaining uses were passing length less than or
equal to the known strlen() of the source, in which case no null-padding
can occur and the behavior is equivalent to memcpy(), though doubtless
slower and certainly harder to reason about.  So just use memcpy() in
these cases.

In other cases, use either StrNCpy() or strlcpy() as appropriate (depending
on whether padding to the full length of the destination buffer seems
useful).

I left a few strncpy() calls alone in the src/timezone/ code, to keep it
in sync with upstream (the IANA tzcode distribution).  There are also a
few such calls in ecpg that could possibly do with more analysis.

AFAICT, none of these changes are more than cosmetic, except for the four
occurrences in fe-secure-openssl.c, which are in fact buggy: an overlength
source leads to a non-null-terminated destination buffer and ensuing
misbehavior.  These don't seem like security issues, first because no stack
clobber is possible and second because if your values of sslcert etc are
coming from untrusted sources then you've got problems way worse than this.
Still, it's undesirable to have unpredictable behavior for overlength
inputs, so back-patch those four changes to all active branches.

Tom Lane 080eabe2e8 Fix libpq's behavior when /etc/passwd isn't readable.
Some users run their applications in chroot environments that lack an
/etc/passwd file.  This means that the current UID's user name and home
directory are not obtainable.  libpq used to be all right with that,
so long as the database role name to use was specified explicitly.
But commit a4c8f14364 broke such cases by
causing any failure of pg_fe_getauthname() to be treated as a hard error.
In any case it did little to advance its nominal goal of causing errors
in pg_fe_getauthname() to be reported better.  So revert that and instead
put some real error-reporting code in place.  This requires changes to the
APIs of pg_fe_getauthname() and pqGetpwuid(), since the latter had
departed from the POSIX-specified API of getpwuid_r() in a way that made
it impossible to distinguish actual lookup errors from "no such user".

To allow such failures to be reported, while not failing if the caller
supplies a role name, add a second call of pg_fe_getauthname() in
connectOptions2().  This is a tad ugly, and could perhaps be avoided with
some refactoring of PQsetdbLogin(), but I'll leave that idea for later.
(Note that the complained-of misbehavior only occurs in PQsetdbLogin,
not when using the PQconnect functions, because in the latter we will
never bother to call pg_fe_getauthname() if the user gives a role name.)

In passing also clean up the Windows-side usage of GetUserName(): the
recommended buffer size is 257 bytes, the passed buffer length should
be the buffer size not buffer size less 1, and any error is reported
by GetLastError() not errno.

Per report from Christoph Berg.  Back-patch to 9.4 where the chroot
failure case was introduced.  The generally poor reporting of errors
here is of very long standing, of course, but given the lack of field
complaints about it we won't risk changing these APIs further back
(even though they're theoretically internal to libpq).

Tom Lane 1adbb347ec Fix minor bugs in commit 30bf4689a9 et al.
Coverity complained that the "else" added to fillPGconn() was unreachable,
which it was.  Remove the dead code.  In passing, rearrange the tests so as
not to bother trying to fetch values for options that can't be assigned.

Pre-9.3 did not have that issue, but it did have a "return" that should be
"goto oom_error" to ensure that a suitable error message gets filled in.

Heikki Linnakangas add1b052e2 Allow "dbname" from connection string to be overridden in PQconnectDBParams
If the "dbname" attribute in PQconnectDBParams contained a connection string
or URI (and expand_dbname = TRUE), the database name from the connection
string could not be overridden by a subsequent "dbname" keyword in the
array. That was not intentional; all other options can be overridden.
Furthermore, any subsequent "dbname" caused the connection string from the
first dbname value to be processed again, overriding any values for the same
options that were given between the connection string and the second dbname
option.

In the passing, clarify in the docs that only the first dbname option in the
array is parsed as a connection string.

Tom Lane 69fed5b26f Ensure libpq reports a suitable error message on unexpected socket EOF.
The EOF-detection logic in pqReadData was a bit confused about who should
set up the error message in case the kernel gives us read-ready-but-no-data
rather than ECONNRESET or some other explicit error condition.  Since the
whole point of this situation is that the lower-level functions don't know
there's anything wrong, pqReadData itself must set up the message.  But
keep the assumption that if an errno was reported, a message was set up at
lower levels.

Per bug #11712 from Marko Tiikkaja.  It's been like this for a very long
time, so back-patch to all supported branches.

Noah Misch 53566fc094 MinGW: Link with shell32.dll instead of shfolder.dll.
This improves consistency with the MSVC build.  On buildfarm member
narwhal, since commit 846e91e022,
shfolder.dll:SHGetFolderPath() crashes when dblink calls it by way of
pqGetHomeDirectory().  Back-patch to 9.4, where that commit first
appeared.  How it caused this regression remains a mystery.  This is a
partial revert of commit 889f038129, which
adopted shfolder.dll for Windows NT 4.0 compatibility.  PostgreSQL 8.2
dropped support for that operating system.

Heikki Linnakangas acd08d764a Support Subject Alternative Names in SSL server certificates.
This patch makes libpq check the server's hostname against DNS names listed
in the X509 subjectAltName extension field in the server certificate. This
allows the same certificate to be used for multiple domain names. If there
are no SANs in the certificate, the Common Name field is used, like before
this patch. If both are given, the Common Name is ignored. That is a bit
surprising, but that's the behavior mandated by the relevant RFCs, and it's
also what the common web browsers do.

This also adds a libpq_ngettext helper macro to allow plural messages to be
translated in libpq. Apparently this happened to be the first plural message
in libpq, so it was not needed before.

Programs need execute permission on a DLL file to load it.  MSYS
"install" ignores the mode argument, and our Cygwin build statically
links libpq into programs.  That explains the lack of buildfarm trouble.

Heikki Linnakangas 680513ab79 Break out OpenSSL-specific code to separate files.
This refactoring is in preparation for adding support for other SSL
implementations, with no user-visible effects. There are now two #defines,
USE_OPENSSL which is defined when building with OpenSSL, and USE_SSL which
is defined when building with any SSL implementation. Currently, OpenSSL is
the only implementation so the two #defines go together, but USE_SSL is
supposed to be used for implementation-independent code.

The libpq SSL code is changed to use a custom BIO, which does all the raw
I/O, like we've been doing in the backend for a long time. That makes it
possible to use MSG_NOSIGNAL to block SIGPIPE when using SSL, which avoids
a couple of syscall for each send(). Probably doesn't make much performance
difference in practice - the SSL encryption is expensive enough to mask the
effect - but it was a natural result of this refactoring.

Based on a patch by Martijn van Oosterhout from 2006. Briefly reviewed by

Tom Lane 2f557167b1 Avoid buffer bloat in libpq when server is consistently faster than client.
If the server sends a long stream of data, and the server + network are
consistently fast enough to force the recv() loop in pqReadData() to
iterate until libpq's input buffer is full, then upon processing the last
incomplete message in each bufferload we'd usually double the buffer size,
due to supposing that we didn't have enough room in the buffer to finish
collecting that message.  After filling the newly-enlarged buffer, the
cycle repeats, eventually resulting in an out-of-memory situation (which
would be reported misleadingly as "lost synchronization with server").
Of course, we should not enlarge the buffer unless we still need room
after discarding already-processed messages.

This bug dates back quite a long time: pqParseInput3 has had the behavior
since perhaps 2003, getCopyDataMessage at least since commit 70066eb1a1
in 2008.  Probably the reason it's not been isolated before is that in
common environments the recv() loop would always be faster than the server
(if on the same machine) or faster than the network (if not); or at least
it wouldn't be slower consistently enough to let the buffer ramp up to a
problematic size.  The reported cases involve Windows, which perhaps has
different timing behavior than other platforms.

Per bug #7914 from Shin-ichi Morita, though this is different from his
proposed solution.  Back-patch to all supported branches.

Heikki Linnakangas a692ee5870 Replace SYSTEMQUOTEs with Windows-specific wrapper functions.
It's easy to forget using SYSTEMQUOTEs when constructing command strings
for system() or popen(). Even if we fix all the places missing it now, it is
bound to be forgotten again in the future. Introduce wrapper functions that
do the the extra quoting for you, and get rid of SYSTEMQUOTEs in all the
callers.

We previosly used SYSTEMQUOTEs in all the hard-coded command strings, and
this doesn't change the behavior of those. But user-supplied commands, like
archive_command, restore_command, COPY TO/FROM PROGRAM calls, as well as
pgbench's \shell, will now gain an extra pair of quotes. That is desirable,
but if you have existing scripts or config files that include an extra
pair of quotes, those might need to be adjusted.

Bruce Momjian 13ecb822e8 libpq: have PQconnectdbParams() and PQpingParams accept "" as default

Magnus Hagander 585bca3936 Fix timeout in LDAP lookup of libpq connection parameters
Bind attempts to an LDAP server should time out after two seconds,
allowing additional lines in the service control file to be parsed
(which provide a fall back to a secondary LDAP server or default options).
The existing code failed to enforce that timeout during TCP connect,
resulting in a hang far longer than two seconds if the LDAP server
does not respond.

Bruce Momjian 4180934651 check socket creation errors against PGINVALID_SOCKET
Previously, in some places, socket creation errors were checked for
negative values, which is not true for Windows because sockets are
unsigned.  This masked socket creation errors on Windows.

Backpatch through 9.0.  8.4 doesn't have the infrastructure to fix this.

Tom Lane f4051e363c Fix advertised dispsize for libpq's sslmode connection parameter.
"8" was correct back when "disable" was the longest allowed value, but
since "verify-full" was added, it should be "12".  Given the lack of
complaints, I wouldn't be surprised if nobody is actually using these
values ... but still, if they're in the API, they should be right.

Noticed while pursuing a different problem.  It's been wrong for quite
a long time, so back-patch to all supported branches.

A number of issues were identified by the Coverity scanner and are
addressed in this patch.  None of these appear to be security issues
and many are mostly cosmetic changes.

Short comments for each of the changes follows.

Correct the semi-colon placement in be-secure.c regarding SSL retries.
Remove a useless comparison-to-NULL in proc.c (value is dereferenced
  prior to this check and therefore can't be NULL).
Add checking of chmod() return values to initdb.
Fix a couple minor memory leaks in initdb.
Fix memory leak in pg_ctl- involves free'ing the config file contents.
Use an int to capture fgetc() return instead of an enum in pg_dump.
Fix minor memory leaks in pg_dump.

Tom Lane 01824385ae Prevent potential overruns of fixed-size buffers.
Coverity identified a number of places in which it couldn't prove that a
string being copied into a fixed-size buffer would fit.  We believe that
most, perhaps all of these are in fact safe, or are copying data that is
coming from a trusted source so that any overrun is not really a security
issue.  Nonetheless it seems prudent to forestall any risk by using
strlcpy() and similar functions.

Fixes by Peter Eisentraut and Jozef Mlich based on Coverity reports.

In addition, fix a potential null-pointer-dereference crash in
contrib/chkpass.  The crypt(3) function is defined to return NULL on
failure, but chkpass.c didn't check for that before using the result.
The main practical case in which this could be an issue is if libc is
configured to refuse to execute unapproved hashing algorithms (e.g.,
"FIPS mode").  This ideally should've been a separate commit, but
since it touches code adjacent to one of the buffer overrun changes,
I included it in this commit to avoid last-minute merge issues.
This issue was reported by Honza Horak.

Tom Lane fa4440f516 Improve libpq's error recovery for connection loss during COPY.
In pqSendSome, if the connection is already closed at entry, discard any
queued output data before returning.  There is no possibility of ever
sending the data, and anyway this corresponds to what we'd do if we'd
detected a hard error while trying to send().  This avoids possible
indefinite bloat of the output buffer if the application keeps trying
to send data (or even just keeps trying to do PQputCopyEnd, as psql
indeed will).

Because PQputCopyEnd won't transition out of PGASYNC_COPY_IN state
until it's successfully queued the COPY END message, and pqPutMsgEnd
doesn't distinguish a queuing failure from a pqSendSome failure,
this omission allowed an infinite loop in psql if the connection closure
occurred when we had at least 8K queued to send.  It might be worth
refactoring so that we can make that distinction, but for the moment
the other changes made here seem to offer adequate defenses.

To guard against other variants of this scenario, do not allow
PQgetResult to return a PGRES_COPY_XXX result if the connection is
already known dead.  Make sure it returns PGRES_FATAL_ERROR instead.

Andrew Dunstan d587298b80 Copy the libpq DLL to the bin directory on Mingw and Cygwin.
This has long been done by the MSVC build system, and has caused
confusion in the past when programs like psql have failed to start
because they can't find the DLL. If it's in the same directory as it now
will be they will find it.

Tom Lane 326e1d73c4 Disallow use of SSL v3 protocol in the server as well as in libpq.
Commit 820f08cabd claimed to make the server
and libpq handle SSL protocol versions identically, but actually the server
was still accepting SSL v3 protocol while libpq wasn't.  Per discussion,
SSL v3 is obsolete, and there's no good reason to continue to accept it.
So make the code really equivalent on both sides.  The behavior now is
that we use the highest mutually-supported TLS protocol version.

Fujii Masao 9f80f4835a Add libpq function PQhostaddr().
There was a bug in the psql's meta command \conninfo. When the
IP address was specified in the hostaddr and psql used it to create
a connection (i.e., psql -d "hostaddr=xxx"), \conninfo could not
display that address. This is because \conninfo got the connection
information only from PQhost() which could not return hostaddr.

This patch adds PQhostaddr(), and changes \conninfo so that it
can display not only the host name that PQhost() returns but also
the IP address which PQhostaddr() returns.

The bug has existed since 9.1 where \conninfo was introduced.
But it's too late to add new libpq function into the released versions,
so no backpatch.

Fujii Masao 77035fa8a9 Fix bugs in PQhost().
In the platform that doesn't support Unix-domain socket, when
neither host nor hostaddr are specified, the default host
'localhost' is used to connect to the server and PQhost() must
return that, but it didn't. This patch fixes PQhost() so that
it returns the default host in that case.

Also this patch fixes PQhost() so that it doesn't return
Unix-domain socket directory path in the platform that doesn't
support Unix-domain socket.

Back-patch to all supported versions.

Magnus Hagander 98de86e422 Remove support for native krb5 authentication
krb5 has been deprecated since 8.3, and the recommended way to do
Kerberos authentication is using the GSSAPI authentication method
(which is still fully supported).

libpq retains the ability to identify krb5 authentication, but only
gives an error message about it being unsupported. Since all authentication
is initiated from the backend, there is no need to keep it at all
in the backend.

Tom Lane 9f9d9b51f0 Improve pqexpbuffer.c to use modern vsnprintf implementations efficiently.
When using a C99-compliant vsnprintf, we can use its report of the required
buffer size to avoid making multiple loops through the formatting logic.
This is similar to the changes recently made in stringinfo.c, but we can't
use psprintf.c here because in libpq we don't want to exit() on error.
(The behavior pqexpbuffer.c has historically used is to mark the
PQExpBuffer as "broken", ie empty, if it runs into any fatal problem.)

To avoid duplicating code more than necessary, I refactored
printfPQExpBuffer and appendPQExpBuffer to share a subroutine that's
very similar to psprintf.c's pvsnprintf in spirit.

Tom Lane 09a89cb5fc Get rid of use of asprintf() in favor of a more portable implementation.
asprintf(), aside from not being particularly portable, has a fundamentally
badly-designed API; the psprintf() function that was added in passing in
the previous patch has a much better API choice.  Moreover, the NetBSD
implementation that was borrowed for the previous patch doesn't work with
non-C99-compliant vsnprintf, which is something we still have to cope with
on some platforms; and it depends on va_copy which isn't all that portable
either.  Get rid of that code in favor of an implementation similar to what
we've used for many years in stringinfo.c.  Also, move it into libpgcommon
since it's not really libpgport material.

I think this patch will be enough to turn the buildfarm green again, but
there's still cosmetic work left to do, namely get rid of pg_asprintf()
in favor of using psprintf().  That will come in a followon patch.

Stephen Frost b37c90f11e Fix SSL deadlock risk in libpq
In libpq, we set up and pass to OpenSSL callback routines to handle
locking.  When we run out of SSL connections, we try to clean things
up by de-registering the hooks.  Unfortunately, we had a few calls
into the OpenSSL library after these hooks were de-registered during
SSL cleanup which lead to deadlocking.  This moves the thread callback
cleanup to be after all SSL-cleanup related OpenSSL library calls.
I've been unable to reproduce the deadlock with this fix.

In passing, also move the close_SSL call to be after unlocking our
ssl_config mutex when in a failure state.  While it looks pretty
unlikely to be an issue, it could have resulted in deadlocks if we
ended up in this code path due to something other than SSL_new
failing.  Thanks to Heikki for pointing this out.

Back-patch to all supported versions; note that the close_SSL issue
only goes back to 9.0, so that hunk isn't included in the 8.4 patch.

Initially found and reported by Vesa-Matti J Kari; many thanks to
both Heikki and Andres for their help running down the specific
issue and reviewing the patch.

Stephen Frost aad2a630b1 Add locking around SSL_context usage in libpq
I've been working with Nick Phillips on an issue he ran into when
trying to use threads with SSL client certificates.  As it turns out,
the call in initialize_SSL() to SSL_CTX_use_certificate_chain_file()
will modify our SSL_context without any protection from other threads
also calling that function or being at some other point and trying to
read from SSL_context.

To protect against this, I've written up the attached (based on an
initial patch from Nick and much subsequent discussion) which puts
locks around SSL_CTX_use_certificate_chain_file() and all of the other
users of SSL_context which weren't already protected.

Tom Lane a099482c86 Expect EWOULDBLOCK from a non-blocking connect() call only on Windows.
On Unix-ish platforms, EWOULDBLOCK may be the same as EAGAIN, which is
*not* a success return, at least not on Linux.  We need to treat it as a
failure to avoid giving a misleading error message.  Per the Single Unix
Spec, only EINPROGRESS and EINTR returns indicate that the connection
attempt is in progress.

On Windows, on the other hand, EWOULDBLOCK (WSAEWOULDBLOCK) is the expected
case.  We must accept EINPROGRESS as well because Cygwin will return that,
and it doesn't seem worth distinguishing Cygwin from native Windows here.
It's not very clear whether EINTR can occur on Windows, but let's leave
that part of the logic alone in the absence of concrete trouble reports.

Also, remove the test for errno == 0, effectively reverting commit
da9501bddb, which AFAICS was just a thinko;
or at best it might have been a workaround for a platform-specific bug,
which we can hope is gone now thirteen years later.  In any case, since
libpq makes no effort to reset errno to zero before calling connect(),
it seems unlikely that that test has ever reliably done anything useful.

Robert Haas 91fa8532f4 Attempt to fix error recovery in COPY BOTH mode.
Previously, libpq and the backend had opposite ideas about whether
it was necessary for the client to send a CopyDone message after
receiving an ErrorResponse, making it impossible to cleanly exit
COPY BOTH mode.  Fix libpq so that works correctly, adopting the
backend's notion that an ErrorResponse kills the copy in both
directions.

Adjust receivelog.c to avoid a degradation in the quality of the
resulting error messages.  libpqwalreceiver.c is already doing
the right thing, so no adjustment needed there.

Add an explicit statement to the documentation explaining how
this part of the protocol is supposed to work, in the hopes of
avoiding future confusion in this area.

Since the consequences of all this confusion are very limited,
especially in the back-branches where no client ever attempts
to exit COPY BOTH mode without closing the connection entirely,
no back-patch.

We need this in non-ENABLE_THREAD_SAFETY builds, and also to satisfy
the exports.txt entry; while it might be a good idea to remove the
latter, I'm hesitant to do so except in the context of an intentional
ABI break.  At least we don't have a separately maintained source file
for it anymore.

Tom Lane da5aeccf64 Move pqsignal() to libpgport.
We had two copies of this function in the backend and libpq, which was
already pretty bogus, but it turns out that we need it in some other
programs that don't use libpq (such as pg_test_fsync).  So put it where
it probably should have been all along.  The signal-mask-initialization
support in src/backend/libpq/pqsignal.c stays where it is, though, since
we only need that in the backend.

Tom Lane 991f3e5ab3 Provide database object names as separate fields in error messages.
This patch addresses the problem that applications currently have to
extract object names from possibly-localized textual error messages,
if they want to know for example which index caused a UNIQUE_VIOLATION
failure.  It adds new error message fields to the wire protocol, which
can carry the name of a table, table column, data type, or constraint
associated with the error.  (Since the protocol spec has always instructed
clients to ignore unrecognized field types, this should not create any
compatibility problem.)

Support for providing these new fields has been added to just a limited set
of error reports (mainly, those in the "integrity constraint violation"
SQLSTATE class), but we will doubtless add them to more calls in future.

Tom Lane 8f0d8f481e Fix one-byte buffer overrun in PQprintTuples().
This bug goes back to the original Postgres95 sources.  Its significance
to modern PG versions is marginal, since we have not used PQprintTuples()
internally in a very long time, and it doesn't seem to have ever been
documented either.  Still, it *is* exposed to client apps, so somebody
out there might possibly be using it.

Heikki Linnakangas abfd192b1b Allow a streaming replication standby to follow a timeline switch.
Before this patch, streaming replication would refuse to start replicating
if the timeline in the primary doesn't exactly match the standby. The
situation where it doesn't match is when you have a master, and two
standbys, and you promote one of the standbys to become new master.
Promoting bumps up the timeline ID, and after that bump, the other standby
would refuse to continue.

There's significantly more timeline related logic in streaming replication
now. First of all, when a standby connects to primary, it will ask the
primary for any timeline history files that are missing from the standby.
The missing files are sent using a new replication command TIMELINE_HISTORY,
and stored in standby's pg_xlog directory. Using the timeline history files,
the standby can follow the latest timeline present in the primary
(recovery_target_timeline='latest'), just as it can follow new timelines
appearing in an archive directory.

START_REPLICATION now takes a TIMELINE parameter, to specify exactly which
timeline to stream WAL from. This allows the standby to request the primary
to send over WAL that precedes the promotion. The replication protocol is
changed slightly (in a backwards-compatible way although there's little hope
of streaming replication working across major versions anyway), to allow
replication to stop when the end of timeline reached, putting the walsender
back into accepting a replication command.

Tom Lane 4af446e7cd Produce a more useful error message for over-length Unix socket paths.
The length of a socket path name is constrained by the size of struct
sockaddr_un, and there's not a lot we can do about it since that is a
kernel API.  However, it would be a good thing if we produced an
intelligible error message when the user specifies a socket path that's too
long --- and getaddrinfo's standard API is too impoverished to do this in
the natural way.  So insert explicit tests at the places where we construct
a socket path name.  Now you'll get an error that makes sense and even
tells you what the limit is, rather than something generic like
"Non-recoverable failure in name resolution".

Tom Lane bc433317ae Fix lo_import and lo_export to return useful error messages more often.
I found that these functions tend to return -1 while leaving an empty error
message string in the PGconn, if they suffer some kind of I/O error on the
file.  The reason is that lo_close, which thinks it's executed a perfectly
fine SQL command, clears the errorMessage.  The minimum-change workaround
is to reorder operations here so that we don't fill the errorMessage until
after lo_close.

Tom Lane 0e924c007d Fix lo_read, lo_write, lo_truncate to cope with "size_t" length parameters.
libpq defines these functions as accepting "size_t" lengths ... but the
underlying backend functions expect signed int32 length parameters, and so
will misinterpret any value exceeding INT_MAX.  Fix the libpq side to throw
error rather than possibly doing something unexpected.

This is a bug of long standing, but I doubt it's worth back-patching.  The
problem is really pretty academic anyway with lo_read/lo_write, since any
caller expecting sane behavior would have to have provided a multi-gigabyte
buffer.  It's slightly more pressing with lo_truncate, but still we haven't
supported large objects over 2GB until now.

Tom Lane 95d035e66d Autoconfiscate selection of 64-bit int type for 64-bit large object API.
Get rid of the fundamentally indefensible assumption that "long long int"
exists and is exactly 64 bits wide on every platform Postgres runs on.
Instead let the configure script select the type to use for "pg_int64".

This is a bit of a pain in the rear since we do not want to pollute client
namespace with all the random symbols that pg_config.h defines; instead
we have to create a separate generated header file, "pg_config_ext.h".
But now that the infrastructure is there, we might have the ability to
add some other stuff that's long been wanting in this area.

Tatsuo Ishii 461ef73f09 Add API for 64-bit large object access. Now users can access up to
4TB large objects (standard 8KB BLCKSZ case).  For this purpose new
libpq API lo_lseek64, lo_tell64 and lo_truncate64 are added.  Also
corresponding new backend functions lo_lseek64, lo_tell64 and
lo_truncate64 are added. inv_api.c is changed to handle 64-bit
offsets.

Patch contributed by Nozomi Anzai (backend side) and Yugo Nagata
(frontend side, docs, regression tests and example program). Reviewed
by Kohei Kaigai. Committed by Tatsuo Ishii with minor editings.

Tom Lane 210eb9b743 Centralize libpq's low-level code for dropping a connection.
Create an internal function pqDropConnection that does the physical socket
close and cleans up closely-associated state.  This removes a bunch of ad
hoc, not always consistent closure code.  The ulterior motive is to have a
single place to wait for a spawned child backend to exit, but this seems
like good cleanup even if that never happens.

I went back and forth on whether to include "conn->status = CONNECTION_BAD"
in pqDropConnection's actions, but for the moment decided not to.  Only a
minority of the call sites actually want that, and in any case it's
arguable that conn->status is slightly higher-level state, and thus not
part of this function's purview.

Heikki Linnakangas f86e6ba40c Add runtime checks for number of query parameters passed to libpq functions.
The maximum number of parameters supported by the FE/BE protocol is 65535,
as it's transmitted as a 16-bit unsigned integer. However, the nParams
arguments to libpq functions are all of type 'int'. We can't change the
signature of libpq functions, but a simple bounds check is in order to make
it more clear what's going wrong if you try to pass more than 65535
parameters.

Tom Lane 41b9c8452b Replace libpq's "row processor" API with a "single row" mode.
After taking awhile to digest the row-processor feature that was added to
libpq in commit 92785dac2e, we've concluded
it is over-complicated and too hard to use.  Leave the core infrastructure
changes in place (that is, there's still a row processor function inside
libpq), but remove the exposed API pieces, and instead provide a "single
row" mode switch that causes PQgetResult to return one row at a time in
separate PGresult objects.

This approach incurs more overhead than proper use of a row processor
callback would, since construction of a PGresult per row adds extra cycles.
However, it is far easier to use and harder to break.  The single-row mode
still affords applications the primary benefit that the row processor API
was meant to provide, namely not having to accumulate large result sets in
memory before processing them.  Preliminary testing suggests that we can
probably buy back most of the extra cycles by micro-optimizing construction
of the extra results, but that task will be left for another day.

Alvaro Herrera b035cb9db7 Accept postgres:// URIs in libpq connection functions
postgres:// URIs are an attempt to "stop the bleeding" in this general
area that has been said to occur due to external projects adopting their
own syntaxes.  The syntaxes supported by this patch:

 postgres://[user[:pwd]@][unix-socket][:port[/dbname]][?param1=value1&...]
 postgres://[user[:pwd]@][net-location][:port][/dbname][?param1=value1&...]

should be enough to cover most interesting cases without having to
resort to "param=value" pairs, but those are provided for the cases that
need them regardless.

libpq documentation has been shuffled around a bit, to avoid stuffing
all the format details into the PQconnectdbParams description, which was
already a bit overwhelming.  The list of keywords has moved to its own
subsection, and the details on the URI format live in another subsection.

This includes a simple test program, as requested in discussion, to
ensure that interesting corner cases continue to work appropriately in
the future.

Tom Lane 92785dac2e Add a "row processor" API to libpq for better handling of large results.
Traditionally libpq has collected an entire query result before passing
it back to the application.  That provides a simple and transactional API,
but it's pretty inefficient for large result sets.  This patch allows the
application to process each row on-the-fly instead of accumulating the
rows into the PGresult.  Error recovery becomes a bit more complex, but
often that tradeoff is well worth making.

Tom Lane 077711c2e3 Remove arbitrary limitation on length of common name in SSL certificates.
Both libpq and the backend would truncate a common name extracted from a
certificate at 32 bytes.  Replace that fixed-size buffer with dynamically
allocated string so that there is no hard limit.  While at it, remove the
code for extracting peer_dn, which we weren't using for anything; and
don't bother to store peer_cn longer than we need it in libpq.

This limit was not so terribly unreasonable when the code was written,
because we weren't using the result for anything critical, just logging it.
But now that there are options for checking the common name against the
server host name (in libpq) or using it as the user's name (in the server),
this could result in undesirable failures.  In the worst case it even seems
possible to spoof a server name or user name, if the correct name is
exactly 32 bytes and the attacker can persuade a trusted CA to issue a
certificate in which that string is a prefix of the certificate's common
name.  (To exploit this for a server name, he'd also have to send the
connection astray via phony DNS data or some such.)  The case that this is
a realistic security threat is a bit thin, but nonetheless we'll treat it
as one.

Back-patch to 8.4.  Older releases contain the faulty code, but it's not
a security problem because the common name wasn't used for anything
interesting.

Peter Eisentraut c6ea8ccea6 Use abort() instead of exit() to abort library functions
In some hopeless situations, certain library functions in libpq and
libpgport quit the program.  Use abort() for that instead of exit(),
so we don't interfere with the normal exit codes the program might
use, we clearly signal the abnormal termination, and the caller has a
chance of catching the termination.

This was originally pointed out by Debian's Lintian program.

Robert Haas 8d15e3ec4f Don't forget to de-escape the password field in .pgpass.
This has been broken just about forever (or more specifically, commit
7f4981f4af) and nobody noticed until
Richard Huxton reported it recently.  Analysis and fix by Ross
Reedstrom, although I didn't use his patch.  This doesn't seem
important enough to back-patch and is mildly backward incompatible, so
I'm just doing this in master.

Tom Lane a49fbaaf8d Don't assume that "E" response to NEGOTIATE_SSL_CODE means pre-7.0 server.
These days, such a response is far more likely to signify a server-side
problem, such as fork failure.  Reporting "server does not support SSL"
(in sslmode=require) could be quite misleading.  But the results could
be even worse in sslmode=prefer: if the problem was transient and the
next connection attempt succeeds, we'll have silently fallen back to
protocol version 2.0, possibly disabling features the user needs.

Hence, it seems best to just eliminate the assumption that backing off
to non-SSL/2.0 protocol is the way to recover from an "E" response, and
instead treat the server error the same as we would in non-SSL cases.

I tested this change against a pre-7.0 server, and found that there
was a second logic bug in the "prefer" path: the test to decide whether
to make a fallback connection attempt assumed that we must have opened
conn->ssl, which in fact does not happen given an "E" response.  After
fixing that, the code does indeed connect successfully to pre-7.0,
as long as you didn't set sslmode=require.  (If you did, you get
"Unsupported frontend protocol", which isn't completely off base
given the server certainly doesn't support SSL.)

Since there seems no reason to believe that pre-7.0 servers exist anymore
in the wild, back-patch to all supported branches.

Tom Lane 724e30c9f8 Ensure we discard unread/unsent data when abandoning a connection attempt.
There are assorted situations wherein PQconnectPoll() will abandon a
connection attempt and try again with different parameters (eg, SSL versus
not SSL).  However, the code forgot to discard any pending data in libpq's
I/O buffers when doing this.  In at least one case (server returns E
message during SSL negotiation), there is unread input data which bollixes
the next connection attempt.  I have not checked to see whether this is
possible in the other cases where we close the socket and retry, but it
seems like a matter of good defensive programming to add explicit
buffer-flushing code to all of them.

This is one of several issues exposed by Daniel Farina's report of
misbehavior after a server-side fork failure.

This has been wrong since forever, so back-patch to all supported branches.

Tom Lane fee476da95 Improve libpq's error reporting for SSL failures.
In many cases, pqsecure_read/pqsecure_write set up useful error messages,
which were then overwritten with useless ones by their callers.  Fix this
by defining the responsibility to set an error message to be entirely that
of the lower-level function when using SSL.

Back-patch to 8.3; the code is too different in 8.2 to be worth the
trouble.

Tom Lane d0c23026b2 Use OpenSSL's SSL_MODE_ACCEPT_MOVING_WRITE_BUFFER flag.
This disables an entirely unnecessary "sanity check" that causes failures
in nonblocking mode, because OpenSSL complains if we move or compact the
write buffer.  The only actual requirement is that we not modify pending
data once we've attempted to send it, which we don't.  Per testing and
research by Martin Pihlak, though this fix is a lot simpler than his patch.

I put the same change into the backend, although it's less clear whether
it's necessary there.  We do use nonblock mode in some situations in
streaming replication, so seems best to keep the same behavior in the
backend as in libpq.

Back-patch to all supported releases.
