Tom Lane b9b8831ad6 Create a "relation mapping" infrastructure to support changing the relfilenodes
of shared or nailed system catalogs.  This has two key benefits:

* The new CLUSTER-based VACUUM FULL can be applied safely to all catalogs.

* We no longer have to use an unsafe reindex-in-place approach for reindexing
  shared catalogs.

CLUSTER on nailed catalogs now works too, although I left it disabled on
shared catalogs because the resulting pg_index.indisclustered update would
only be visible in one database.

Since reindexing shared system catalogs is now fully transactional and
crash-safe, the former special cases in REINDEX behavior have been removed;
shared catalogs are treated the same as non-shared.

This commit does not do anything about the recently-discussed problem of
deadlocks between VACUUM FULL/CLUSTER on a system catalog and other
concurrent queries; will address that in a separate patch.  As a stopgap,
parallel_schedule has been tweaked to run vacuum.sql by itself, to avoid
such failures during the regression tests.

Tom Lane 70a2b05a59 Assorted cleanups in preparation for using a map file to support altering
the relfilenode of currently-not-relocatable system catalogs.

1. Get rid of inval.c's dependency on relfilenode, by not having it emit
smgr invalidations as a result of relcache flushes.  Instead, smgr sinval
messages are sent directly from smgr.c when an actual relation delete or
truncate is done.  This makes considerably more structural sense and allows
elimination of a large number of useless smgr inval messages that were
formerly sent even in cases where nothing was changing at the
physical-relation level.  Note that this reintroduces the concept of
nontransactional inval messages, but that's okay --- because the messages
are sent by smgr.c, they will be sent in Hot Standby slaves, just from a
lower logical level than before.

2. Move setNewRelfilenode out of catalog/index.c, where it never logically
belonged, into relcache.c; which is a somewhat debatable choice as well but
better than before.  (I considered catalog/storage.c, but that seemed too
low level.)  Rename to RelationSetNewRelfilenode.

3. Cosmetic cleanups of some other relfilenode manipulations.

Robert Haas 76a47c0e74 Replace ALTER TABLE ... SET STATISTICS DISTINCT with a more general mechanism.
Attributes can now have options, just as relations and tablespaces do, and
the reloptions code is used to parse, validate, and store them.  For
simplicity and because these options are not performance critical, we store
them in a separate cache rather than the main relcache.

Tom Lane 9a915e596f Improve the handling of SET CONSTRAINTS commands by having them search
pg_constraint before searching pg_trigger.  This allows saner handling of
corner cases; in particular we now say "constraint is not deferrable"
rather than "constraint does not exist" when the command is applied to
a constraint that's inherently non-deferrable.  Per a gripe several months
ago from hubert depesz lubaczewski.

To make this work without breaking user-defined constraint triggers,
we have to add entries for them to pg_constraint.  However, in return
we can remove the pgconstrname column from pg_constraint, which represents
a fairly sizable space savings.  I also replaced the tgisconstraint column
with tgisinternal; the old meaning of tgisconstraint can now be had by
testing for nonzero tgconstraint, while there is no other way to get
the old meaning of nonzero tgconstraint, namely that the trigger was
internally generated rather than being user-created.

In passing, fix an old misstatement in the docs and comments, namely that
pg_trigger.tgdeferrable is exactly redundant with pg_constraint.condeferrable.
Actually, we mark RI action triggers as nondeferrable even when they belong to
a nominally deferrable FK constraint.  The SET CONSTRAINTS code now relies on
that instead of hard-coding a list of exception OIDs.

Tom Lane cfc5008a51 Adjust naming of indexes and their columns per recent discussion.
Index expression columns are now named after the FigureColname result for
their expressions, rather than always being "pg_expression_N".  Digits are
appended to this name if needed to make the column name unique within the
index.  (That happens for regular columns too, thus fixing the old problem
that CREATE INDEX fooi ON foo (f1, f1) fails.  Before exclusion indexes
there was no real reason to do such a thing, but now maybe there is.)

Default names for indexes and associated constraints now include the column
names of all their columns, not only the first one as in previous practice.
(Of course, this will be truncated as needed to fit in NAMEDATALEN.  Also,
pkey indexes retain the historical behavior of not naming specific columns
at all.)

An example of the results:

Tom Lane 62aba76568 Prevent indirect security attacks via changing session-local state within
an allegedly immutable index function.  It was previously recognized that
we had to prevent such a function from executing SET/RESET ROLE/SESSION
AUTHORIZATION, or it could trivially obtain the privileges of the session
user.  However, since there is in general no privilege checking for changes
of session-local state, it is also possible for such a function to change
settings in a way that might subvert later operations in the same session.
Examples include changing search_path to cause an unexpected function to
be called, or replacing an existing prepared statement with another one
that will execute a function of the attacker's choosing.

The present patch secures VACUUM, ANALYZE, and CREATE INDEX/REINDEX against
these threats, which are the same places previously deemed to need protection
against the SET ROLE issue.  GUC changes are still allowed, since there are
many useful cases for that, but we prevent security problems by forcing a
rollback of any GUC change after completing the operation.  Other cases are
handled by throwing an error if any change is attempted; these include temp
table creation, closing a cursor, and creating or deleting a prepared
statement.  (In 7.4, the infrastructure to roll back GUC changes doesn't
exist, so we settle for rejecting changes of "search_path" in these contexts.)

Tom Lane 0cb65564e5 Add exclusion constraints, which generalize the concept of uniqueness to
support any indexable commutative operator, not just equality.  Two rows
violate the exclusion constraint if "row1.col OP row2.col" is TRUE for
each of the columns in the constraint.

Tom Lane 7fc0f06221 Add a WHEN clause to CREATE TRIGGER, allowing a boolean expression to be
checked to determine whether the trigger should be fired.

For BEFORE triggers this is mostly a matter of spec compliance; but for AFTER
triggers it can provide a noticeable performance improvement, since queuing of
a deferred trigger event and re-fetching of the row(s) at end of statement can
be short-circuited if the trigger does not need to be fired.

Tom Lane b2734a0d79 Support SQL-compliant triggers on columns, ie fire only if certain columns
are named in the UPDATE's SET list.

Note: the schema of pg_trigger has not actually changed; we've just started
to use a column that was there all along.  catversion bumped anyway so that
this commit is included in the history of potentially interesting changes
to system catalog contents.

Tom Lane 249724cb01 Create an ALTER DEFAULT PRIVILEGES command, which allows users to adjust
the privileges that will be applied to subsequently-created objects.

Such adjustments are always per owning role, and can be restricted to objects
created in particular schemas too.  A notable benefit is that users can
override the traditional default privilege settings, eg, the PUBLIC EXECUTE
privilege traditionally granted by default for functions.

Tom Lane 25d9bf2e3e Support deferrable uniqueness constraints.
The current implementation fires an AFTER ROW trigger for each tuple that
looks like it might be non-unique according to the index contents at the
time of insertion.  This works well as long as there aren't many conflicts,
but won't scale to massive unique-key reassignments.  Improving that case
is a TODO item.

Tom Lane c1b9ec24ef Add system catalog columns pg_constraint.conindid and pg_trigger.tgconstrindid.
conindid is the index supporting a constraint.  We can use this not only for
unique/primary-key constraints, but also foreign-key constraints, which
depend on the unique index that constrains the referenced columns.
tgconstrindid is just copied from the constraint's conindid field, or is
zero for triggers not associated with constraints.

This is mainly intended as infrastructure for upcoming patches, but it has
some virtue in itself, since it exposes a relationship that you formerly
had to grovel in pg_depend to determine.  I simplified one information_schema
view accordingly.  (There is a pg_dump query that could also use conindid,
but I left it alone because it wasn't clear it'd get any faster.)

Tom Lane 32ea236361 Improve the IndexVacuumInfo/IndexBulkDeleteResult API to allow somewhat sane
behavior in cases where we don't know the heap tuple count accurately; in
particular partial vacuum, but this also makes the API a bit more useful
for ANALYZE.  This patch adds "estimated_count" flags to both structs so
that an approximate count can be flagged as such, and adjusts the logic
so that approximate counts are not used for updating pg_class.reltuples.

This fixes my previous complaint that VACUUM was putting ridiculous values
into pg_class.reltuples for indexes.  The actual impact of that bug is
limited, because the planner only pays attention to reltuples for an index
if the index is partial; which probably explains why beta testers hadn't
noticed a degradation in plan quality from it.  But it needs to be fixed.

The whole thing is a bit messy and should be redesigned in future, because
reltuples now has the potential to drift quite far away from reality when
a long period elapses with no non-partial vacuums.  But this is as good as
it's going to get for 8.4.

Tom Lane 5377ccbe24 Update obsolete comment in index_drop(). When the comment was written,
queries frequently took no lock at all on individual indexes.  That's not
true any more, but we still need lock on the parent table to make it safe
to use cached lists of index OIDs.

Tom Lane 948d6ec90f Modify the relcache to record the temp status of both local and nonlocal
temp relations; this is no more expensive than before, now that we have
pg_class.relistemp.  Insert tests into bufmgr.c to prevent attempting
to fetch pages from nonlocal temp relations.  This provides a low-level
defense against bugs-of-omission allowing temp pages to be loaded into shared
buffers, as in the contrib/pgstattuple problem reported by Stuart Bishop.
While at it, tweak a bunch of places to use new relcache tests (instead of
expensive probes into pg_namespace) to detect local or nonlocal temp tables.

Tom Lane ff301d6e69 Implement "fastupdate" support for GIN indexes, in which we try to accumulate
multiple index entries in a holding area before adding them to the main index
structure.  This helps because bulk insert is (usually) significantly faster
than retail insert for GIN.

This patch also removes GIN support for amgettuple-style index scans.  The
API defined for amgettuple is difficult to support with fastupdate, and
the previously committed partial-match feature didn't really work with
it either.  We might eventually figure a way to put back amgettuple
support, but it won't happen for 8.4.

catversion bumped because of change in GIN's pg_am entry, and because
the format of GIN indexes changed on-disk (there's a metapage now,
and possibly a pending list).

Heikki Linnakangas 3396000684 Rethink the way FSM truncation works. Instead of WAL-logging FSM
truncations in FSM code, call FreeSpaceMapTruncateRel from smgr_redo. To
make that cleaner from modularity point of view, move the WAL-logging one
level up to RelationTruncate, and move RelationTruncate and all the
related WAL-logging to new src/backend/catalog/storage.c file. Introduce
new RelationCreateStorage and RelationDropStorage functions that are used
instead of calling smgrcreate/smgrscheduleunlink directly. Move the
pending rel deletion stuff from smgrcreate/smgrscheduleunlink to the new
functions. This leaves smgr.c as a thin wrapper around md.c; all the
transactional stuff is now in storage.c.

This will make it easier to add new forks with similar truncation logic,
like the visibility map.

Alvaro Herrera 03e5248d0f Replace the usage of heap_addheader to create pg_attribute tuples with regular
heap_form_tuple.  Since this removes the last remaining caller of
heap_addheader, remove it.

Extracted from the column privileges patch from Stephen Frost, with further
code cleanups by me.

Tom Lane 10e3acb8e7 Prevent synchronous scan during GIN index build, because GIN is optimized
for inserting tuples in increasing TID order.  It's not clear whether this
fully explains Ivan Sergio Borgonovo's complaint, but simple testing
confirms that a scan that doesn't start at block 0 can slow GIN build by
a factor of three or four.

Backpatch to 8.3.  Sync scan didn't exist before that.

Tom Lane 902d1cb35f Remove all uses of the deprecated functions heap_formtuple, heap_modifytuple,
and heap_deformtuple in favor of the newer functions heap_form_tuple et al
(which do the same things but use bool control flags instead of arbitrary
char values).  Eliminate the former duplicate coding of these functions,
reducing the deprecated functions to mere wrappers around the newer ones.
We can't get rid of them entirely because add-on modules probably still
contain many instances of the old coding style.

Tom Lane 5b5ee14a4b Add a defense to prevent storing pseudo-type data into index columns.
Formerly, the lack of any opclasses that could accept such data was enough
of a defense, but now with a "record" opclass we need to check more carefully.
(You can still use that opclass for an index, but you have to store a named
composite type not an anonymous one.)

Heikki Linnakangas 15c121b3ed Rewrite the FSM. Instead of relying on a fixed-size shared memory segment, the
free space information is stored in a dedicated FSM relation fork, with each
relation (except for hash indexes; they don't use FSM).

This eliminates the max_fsm_relations and max_fsm_pages GUC options; remove any
trace of them from the backend, initdb, and documentation.

Rewrite contrib/pg_freespacemap to match the new FSM implementation. Also
introduce a new variant of the get_raw_page(regclass, int4, int4) function in
contrib/pageinspect that let's you to return pages from any relation fork, and
a new fsm_page_contents() function to inspect the new FSM pages.

Tom Lane 4adc2f72a4 Change hash indexes to store only the hash code rather than the whole indexed
value.  This means that hash index lookups are always lossy and have to be
rechecked when the heap is visited; however, the gain in index compactness
outweighs this when the indexed values are wide.  Also, we only need to
perform datatype comparisons when the hash codes match exactly, rather than
for every entry in the hash bucket; so it could also win for datatypes that
have expensive comparison functions.  A small additional win is gained by
keeping hash index pages sorted by hash code and using binary search to reduce
the number of index tuples we have to look at.

and hash bitmaps a bit better from the page header datastructures.

Tom Lane e5536e77a5 Move exprType(), exprTypmod(), expression_tree_walker(), and related routines
into nodes/nodeFuncs, so as to reduce wanton cross-subsystem #includes inside
the backend.  There's probably more that should be done along this line,
but this is a start anyway.

Heikki Linnakangas 3f0e808c4a Introduce the concept of relation forks. An smgr relation can now consist
of multiple forks, and each fork can be created and grown separately.

The bulk of this patch is about changing the smgr API to include an extra
ForkNumber argument in every smgr function. Also, smgrscheduleunlink and
smgrdounlink no longer implicitly call smgrclose, because other forks might
still exist after unlinking one. The callers of those functions have been
modified to call smgrclose instead.

This patch in itself doesn't have any user-visible effect, but provides the
infrastructure needed for upcoming patches. The additional forks envisioned
are a rewritten FSM implementation that doesn't rely on a fixed-size shared
memory block, and a visibility map to allow skipping portions of a table in
VACUUM that have no dead tuples.

Tom Lane eca1388629 Fix corner-case bug introduced with HOT: if REINDEX TABLE pg_class (or a
REINDEX DATABASE including same) is done before a session has done any other
update on pg_class, the pg_class relcache entry was left with an incorrect
setting of rd_indexattr, because the indexed-attributes set would be first
demanded at a time when we'd forced a partial list of indexes into the
pg_class entry, and it would remain cached after that.  This could result
in incorrect decisions about HOT-update safety later in the same session.
In practice, since only pg_class_relname_nsp_index would be missed out,
only ALTER TABLE RENAME and ALTER TABLE SET SCHEMA could trigger a problem.

Alvaro Herrera a3540b0f65 Improve our #include situation by moving pointer types away from the
corresponding struct definitions.  This allows other headers to avoid including
certain highly-loaded headers such as rel.h and relscan.h, instead using just
relcache.h, heapam.h or genam.h, which are more lightweight and thus cause less
unnecessary dependencies.

Alvaro Herrera 5da9da71c4 Improve snapshot manager by keeping explicit track of snapshots.
There are two ways to track a snapshot: there's the "registered" list, which
is used for arbitrary long-lived snapshots; and there's the "active stack",
which is used for the snapshot that is considered "active" at any time.
This also allows users of snapshots to stop worrying about snapshot memory
allocation and freeing, and about using PG_TRY blocks around ActiveSnapshot
assignment.  This is all done automatically now.

As a consequence, this allows us to reset MyProc->xmin when there are no
more snapshots registered in the current backend, reducing the impact that
long-running transactions have on VACUUM.

Alvaro Herrera f8c4d7db60 Restructure some header files a bit, in particular heapam.h, by removing some
unnecessary #include lines in it.  Also, move some tuple routine prototypes and
macros to htup.h, which allows removal of heapam.h inclusion from some .c
files.

For this to work, a new header file access/sysattr.h needed to be created,
initially containing attribute numbers of system columns, for pg_dump usage.

While at it, make contrib ltree, intarray and hstore header files more
consistent with our header style.

Tom Lane cd902b331d Change the rules for inherited CHECK constraints to be essentially the same
as those for inherited columns; that is, it's no longer allowed for a child
table to not have a check constraint matching one that exists on a parent.
This satisfies the principle of least surprise (rows selected from the parent
will always appear to meet its check constraints) and eliminates some
longstanding bogosity in pg_dump, which formerly had to guess about whether
check constraints were really inherited or not.

The implementation involves adding conislocal and coninhcount columns to
pg_constraint (paralleling attislocal and attinhcount in pg_attribute)
and refactoring various ALTER TABLE actions to be more like those for
columns.

Alvaro Herrera 73b0300b2a Move the HTSU_Result enum definition into snapshot.h, to avoid including
tqual.h into heapam.h.  This makes all inclusion of tqual.h explicit.

Alvaro Herrera d43b085d57 Separate snapshot management code from tuple visibility code, create a
snapmgmt.c file for the former.  The header files have also been reorganized
in three parts: the most basic snapshot definitions are now in a new file
snapshot.h, and the also new snapmgmt.h keeps the definitions for snapmgmt.c.
tqual.h has been reduced to the bare minimum.

This patch is just a first step towards managing live snapshots within a
transaction; there is no functionality change.

Tom Lane 220db7ccd8 Simplify and standardize conversions between TEXT datums and ordinary C
strings.  This patch introduces four support functions cstring_to_text,
cstring_to_text_with_len, text_to_cstring, and text_to_cstring_buffer, and
two macros CStringGetTextDatum and TextDatumGetCString.  A number of
existing macros that provided variants on these themes were removed.

Most of the places that need to make such conversions now require just one
function or macro call, in place of the multiple notational layers that used
to be needed.  There are no longer any direct calls of textout or textin,
and we got most of the places that were using handmade conversions via
memcpy (there may be a few still lurking, though).

This commit doesn't make any serious effort to eliminate transient memory
leaks caused by detoasting toasted text objects before they reach
text_to_cstring.  We changed PG_GETARG_TEXT_P to PG_GETARG_TEXT_PP in a few
places where it was easy, but much more could be done.

Tom Lane 0688d84041 Add checks to TRUNCATE, CLUSTER, and REINDEX to prevent performing these
operations when the current transaction has any open references to the
target relation or index (implying it has an active query using the relation).
The need for this was previously recognized in connection with ALTER TABLE,
but anything that summarily eliminates tuples or moves them around would
confuse an active scan.

While this patch does not in itself fix bug #3883 (the deadlock would happen
before the new check fires), it will discourage people from attempting the
sequence of operations that creates a deadlock risk, so it's at least a
partial response to that problem.

In passing, add a previously-missing check to REINDEX to prevent trying to
reindex another backend's temp table.  This isn't a security problem since
only a superuser would get past the schema permission checks, but if we are
testing for this in other utility commands then surely REINDEX should too.

Tom Lane d3b1b1f9d8 Fix CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY so that it won't use synchronized scan for
its second pass over the table.  It has to start at block zero, else the
"merge join" logic for detecting which TIDs are already in the index
doesn't work.  Hence, extend heapam.c's API so that callers can enable or
disable syncscan.  (I put in an option to disable buffer access strategy,
too, just in case somebody needs it.)  Per report from Hannes Dorbath.

Tom Lane eedb068c0a Make standard maintenance operations (including VACUUM, ANALYZE, REINDEX,
and CLUSTER) execute as the table owner rather than the calling user, using
the same privilege-switching mechanism already used for SECURITY DEFINER
functions.  The purpose of this change is to ensure that user-defined
functions used in index definitions cannot acquire the privileges of a
superuser account that is performing routine maintenance.  While a function
used in an index is supposed to be IMMUTABLE and thus not able to do anything
very interesting, there are several easy ways around that restriction; and
even if we could plug them all, there would remain a risk of reading sensitive
information and broadcasting it through a covert channel such as CPU usage.

To prevent bypassing this security measure, execution of SET SESSION
AUTHORIZATION and SET ROLE is now forbidden within a SECURITY DEFINER context.

Backpatch as far as 7.4; AFAICT 7.3 does not have the issue, because it doesn't

column referenced by an index.

Tom Lane 6daef2bca4 Remove hack in pg_tablespace_aclmask() that disallowed permissions
on pg_global even to superusers, and replace it with checks in various
other places to complain about invalid uses of pg_global.  This ends
up being a bit more code but it allows a more specific error message
to be given, and it un-breaks pg_tablespace_size() on pg_global.

Tom Lane 282d2a03dd HOT updates. When we update a tuple without changing any of its indexed
columns, and the new version can be stored on the same heap page, we no longer
generate extra index entries for the new version.  Instead, index searches
follow the HOT-chain links to ensure they find the correct tuple version.

In addition, this patch introduces the ability to "prune" dead tuples on a
per-page basis, without having to do a complete VACUUM pass to recover space.
VACUUM is still needed to clean up dead index entries, however.

Tom Lane d526575f89 Make large sequential scans and VACUUMs work in a limited-size "ring" of
buffers, rather than blowing out the whole shared-buffer arena.  Aside from
avoiding cache spoliation, this fixes the problem that VACUUM formerly tended
to cause a WAL flush for every page it modified, because we had it hacked to
use only a single buffer.  Those flushes will now occur only once per
ring-ful.  The exact ring size, and the threshold for seqscans to switch into
the ring usage pattern, remain under debate; but the infrastructure seems
done.  The key bit of infrastructure is a new optional BufferAccessStrategy
object that can be passed to ReadBuffer operations; this replaces the former
StrategyHintVacuum API.

This patch also changes the buffer usage-count methodology a bit: we now
advance usage_count when first pinning a buffer, rather than when last
unpinning it.  To preserve the behavior that a buffer's lifetime starts to
decrease when it's released, the clock sweep code is modified to not decrement
usage_count of pinned buffers.

Work not done in this commit: teach GiST and GIN indexes to use the vacuum
BufferAccessStrategy for vacuum-driven fetches.

Tom Lane e85a01df67 Clean up the representation of special snapshots by including a "method
pointer" in every Snapshot struct.  This allows removal of the case-by-case
tests in HeapTupleSatisfiesVisibility, which should make it a bit faster
(I didn't try any performance tests though).  More importantly, we are no
longer violating portable C practices by assuming that small integers are
distinct from all pointer values, and HeapTupleSatisfiesDirty no longer
has a non-reentrant API involving side-effects on a global variable.

There were a couple of places calling HeapTupleSatisfiesXXX routines
directly rather than through the HeapTupleSatisfiesVisibility macro.
Since these places had to be changed anyway, I chose to make them go
through the macro for uniformity.

Along the way I renamed HeapTupleSatisfiesSnapshot to HeapTupleSatisfiesMVCC
to emphasize that it's only used with MVCC-type snapshots.  I was sorely
tempted to rename HeapTupleSatisfiesVisibility to HeapTupleSatisfiesSnapshot,
but forebore for the moment to avoid confusion and reduce the likelihood that
this patch breaks some of the pending patches.  Might want to reconsider
doing that later.

Tom Lane 7bddca3450 Fix up foreign-key mechanism so that there is a sound semantic basis for the
equality checks it applies, instead of a random dependence on whatever
operators might be named "=".  The equality operators will now be selected
from the opfamily of the unique index that the FK constraint depends on to
enforce uniqueness of the referenced columns; therefore they are certain to be
consistent with that index's notion of equality.  Among other things this
should fix the problem noted awhile back that pg_dump may fail for foreign-key
constraints on user-defined types when the required operators aren't in the
search path.  This also means that the former warning condition about "foreign
key constraint will require costly sequential scans" is gone: if the
comparison condition isn't indexable then we'll reject the constraint
entirely. All per past discussions.

Along the way, make the RI triggers look into pg_constraint for their
information, instead of using pg_trigger.tgargs; and get rid of the always
error-prone fixed-size string buffers in ri_triggers.c in favor of building up
the RI queries in StringInfo buffers.

Standard English uses "may", "can", and "might" in different ways:

        may - permission, "You may borrow my rake."

        can - ability, "I can lift that log."

        might - possibility, "It might rain today."

Unfortunately, in conversational English, their use is often mixed, as
in, "You may use this variable to do X", when in fact, "can" is a better
choice.  Similarly, "It may crash" is better stated, "It might crash".

Tom Lane 4431758229 Support ORDER BY ... NULLS FIRST/LAST, and add ASC/DESC/NULLS FIRST/NULLS LAST
per-column options for btree indexes.  The planner's support for this is still
pretty rudimentary; it does not yet know how to plan mergejoins with
nondefault ordering options.  The documentation is pretty rudimentary, too.
I'll work on improving that stuff later.

Note incompatible change from prior behavior: ORDER BY ... USING will now be
rejected if the operator is not a less-than or greater-than member of some
btree opclass.  This prevents less-than-sane behavior if an operator that
doesn't actually define a proper sort ordering is selected.

Tom Lane 09d3670df3 Change the relation_open protocol so that we obtain lock on a relation
(table or index) before trying to open its relcache entry.  This fixes
race conditions in which someone else commits a change to the relation's
catalog entries while we are in process of doing relcache load.  Problems
of that ilk have been reported sporadically for years, but it was not
really practical to fix until recently --- for instance, the recent
addition of WAL-log support for in-place updates helped.

Along the way, remove pg_am.amconcurrent: all AMs are now expected to support
concurrent update.

Tom Lane 6e38e34d64 Change the bootstrap sequence so that toast tables for system catalogs are
created in the bootstrap phase proper, rather than added after-the-fact
by initdb.  This is cleaner than before because it allows us to retire the
undocumented ALTER TABLE ... CREATE TOAST TABLE command, but the real reason
I'm doing it is so that toast tables of shared catalogs will now have
predetermined OIDs.  This will allow a reasonably clean solution to the
problem of locking tables before we load their relcache entries, to appear
in a forthcoming patch.

Alvaro Herrera 92c2ecc130 Modify snapshot definition so that lazy vacuums are ignored by other
vacuums.  This allows a OLTP-like system with big tables to continue
regular vacuuming on small-but-frequently-updated tables while the
big tables are being vacuumed.

Tom Lane b7b78d24f7 Code review for FILLFACTOR patch. Change WITH grammar as per earlier
discussion (including making def_arg allow reserved words), add missed
opt_definition for UNIQUE case.  Put the reloptions support code in a less
random place (I chose to make a new file access/common/reloptions.c).
Eliminate header inclusion creep.  Make the index options functions safely
user-callable (seems like client apps might like to be able to test validity
of options before trying to make an index).  Reduce overhead for normal case
with no options by allowing rd_options to be NULL.  Fix some unmaintainably
klugy code, including getting rid of Natts_pg_class_fixed at long last.
Some stylistic cleanup too, and pay attention to keeping comments in sync
with code.

Documentation still needs work, though I did fix the omissions in
catalogs.sgml and indexam.sgml.

Tom Lane 3fdeb189e9 Clean up code associated with updating pg_class statistics columns
(relpages/reltuples).  To do this, create formal support in heapam.c for
"overwrite" tuple updates (including xlog replay capability) and use that
instead of the ad-hoc overwrites we'd been using in VACUUM and CREATE INDEX.
Take the responsibility for updating stats during CREATE INDEX out of the
individual index AMs, and do it where it belongs, in catalog/index.c.  Aside
from being more modular, this avoids having to update the same tuple twice in
some paths through CREATE INDEX.  It's probably not measurably faster, but
for sure it's a lot cleaner than before.

Tom Lane a8b8f4db23 Clean up WAL/buffer interactions as per my recent proposal. Get rid of the
misleadingly-named WriteBuffer routine, and instead require routines that
change buffer pages to call MarkBufferDirty (which does exactly what it says).
We also require that they do so before calling XLogInsert; this takes care of
the synchronization requirement documented in SyncOneBuffer.  Note that
because bufmgr takes the buffer content lock (in shared mode) while writing
out any buffer, it doesn't matter whether MarkBufferDirty is executed before
the buffer content change is complete, so long as the content change is
completed before releasing exclusive lock on the buffer.  So it's OK to set
the dirtybit before we fill in the LSN.
This eliminates the former kluge of needing to set the dirtybit in LockBuffer.
Aside from making the code more transparent, we can also add some new
debugging assertions, in particular that the caller of MarkBufferDirty must
hold the buffer content lock, not merely a pin.

Tom Lane 4e7d10c7cd Comments in IndexBuildHeapScan describe the indexing of recently-dead
tuples as needed "to keep VACUUM from complaining", but actually there is
a more compelling reason to do it: failure to do so violates MVCC semantics.
This is because a pre-existing serializable transaction might try to use
the index after we finish (re)building it, and it might fail to find tuples
it should be able to see.  We got this mostly right, but not in the case
of partial indexes: the code mistakenly discarded recently-dead tuples for
partial indexes.  Fix that, and adjust the comments.

Tom Lane bedb78d386 Implement sharable row-level locks, and use them for foreign key references
to eliminate unnecessary deadlocks.  This commit adds SELECT ... FOR SHARE
paralleling SELECT ... FOR UPDATE.  The implementation uses a new SLRU
data structure (managed much like pg_subtrans) to represent multiple-
transaction-ID sets.  When more than one transaction is holding a shared
lock on a particular row, we create a MultiXactId representing that set
of transactions and store its ID in the row's XMAX.  This scheme allows
an effectively unlimited number of row locks, just as we did before,
while not costing any extra overhead except when a shared lock actually
has to be shared.   Still TODO: use the regular lock manager to control
the grant order when multiple backends are waiting for a row lock.

Tom Lane 7c13781ee7 First phase of project to use fixed OIDs for all system catalogs and
indexes.  Extend the macros in include/catalog/*.h to carry the info
about hand-assigned OIDs, and adjust the genbki script and bootstrap
code to make the relations actually get those OIDs.  Remove the small
number of RelOid_pg_foo macros that we had in favor of a complete
set named like the catname.h and indexing.h macros.  Next phase will
get rid of internal use of names for looking up catalogs and indexes;
but this completes the changes forcing an initdb, so it looks like a
good place to commit.
Along the way, I made the shared relations (pg_database etc) not be
'bootstrap' relations any more, so as to reduce the number of hardwired
entries and simplify changing those relations in future.  I'm not
sure whether they ever really needed to be handled as bootstrap
relations, but it seems to work fine to not do so now.

Tom Lane 70c9763d48 Convert oidvector and int2vector into variable-length arrays. This
change saves a great deal of space in pg_proc and its primary index,
and it eliminates the former requirement that INDEX_MAX_KEYS and
FUNC_MAX_ARGS have the same value.  INDEX_MAX_KEYS is still embedded
in the on-disk representation (because it affects index tuple header
size), but FUNC_MAX_ARGS is not.  I believe it would now be possible
to increase FUNC_MAX_ARGS at little cost, but haven't experimented yet.
There are still a lot of vestigial references to FUNC_MAX_ARGS, which
I will clean up in a separate pass.  However, getting rid of it
altogether would require changing the FunctionCallInfoData struct,
and I'm not sure I want to buy into that.

Tom Lane ee4ddac137 Convert index-related tuple handling routines from char 'n'/' ' to bool
convention for isnull flags.  Also, remove the useless InsertIndexResult
return struct from index AM aminsert calls --- there is no reason for
the caller to know where in the index the tuple was inserted, and we
were wasting a palloc cycle per insert to deliver this uninteresting
value (plus nontrivial complexity in some AMs).
I forced initdb because of the change in the signature of the aminsert
routines, even though nothing really looks at those pg_proc entries...

Tom Lane 354049c709 Remove unnecessary calls of FlushRelationBuffers: there is no need
to write out data that we are about to tell the filesystem to drop.
smgr_internal_unlink already had a DropRelFileNodeBuffers call to
get rid of dead buffers without a write after it's no longer possible
to roll back the deleting transaction.  Adding a similar call in
smgrtruncate simplifies callers and makes the overall division of
labor clearer.  This patch removes the former behavior that VACUUM
would write all dirty buffers of a relation unconditionally.

Tom Lane f97aebd162 Revise TupleTableSlot code to avoid unnecessary construction and disassembly
of tuples when passing data up through multiple plan nodes.  A slot can now
hold either a normal "physical" HeapTuple, or a "virtual" tuple consisting
of Datum/isnull arrays.  Upper plan levels can usually just copy the Datum
arrays, avoiding heap_formtuple() and possible subsequent nocachegetattr()
calls to extract the data again.  This work extends Atsushi Ogawa's earlier
patch, which provided the key idea of adding Datum arrays to TupleTableSlots.
(I believe however that something like this was foreseen way back in Berkeley
days --- see the old comment on ExecProject.)  A test case involving many
levels of join of fairly wide tables (about 80 columns altogether) showed
about 3x overall speedup, though simple queries will probably not be
helped very much.

I have also duplicated some code in heaptuple.c in order to provide versions
of heap_formtuple and friends that use "bool" arrays to indicate null
attributes, instead of the old convention of "char" arrays containing either
'n' or ' '.  This provides a better match to the convention used by
ExecEvalExpr.  While I have not made a concerted effort to get rid of uses
of the old routines, I think they should be deprecated and eventually removed.

number of palloc calls.  This has a salutory impact on plpgsql operations
with record variables (which create and destroy tupdescs constantly)

Tom Lane 5d5087363d Replace the BufMgrLock with separate locks on the lookup hashtable and
the freelist, plus per-buffer spinlocks that protect access to individual
shared buffer headers.  This requires abandoning a global freelist (since
the freelist is a global contention point), which shoots down ARC and 2Q
as well as plain LRU management.  Adopt a clock sweep algorithm instead.
Preliminary results show substantial improvement in multi-backend situations.

Tom Lane 5374d097de Change planner to use the current true disk file size as its estimate of
a relation's number of blocks, rather than the possibly-obsolete value
in pg_class.relpages.  Scale the value in pg_class.reltuples correspondingly
to arrive at a hopefully more accurate number of rows.  When pg_class
contains 0/0, estimate a tuple width from the column datatypes and divide
that into current file size to estimate number of rows.  This improved
methodology allows us to jettison the ancient hacks that put bogus default
values into pg_class when a table is first created.  Also, per a suggestion
from Simon, make VACUUM (but not VACUUM FULL or ANALYZE) adjust the value
it puts into pg_class.reltuples to try to represent the mean tuple density
instead of the minimal density that actually prevails just after VACUUM.
These changes alter the plans selected for certain regression tests, so
update the expected files accordingly.  (I removed join_1.out because
it's not clear if it still applies; we can add back any variant versions
as they are shown to be needed.)

This fix is intended to be permanent: it moves the responsibility for
calling SetBufferCommitInfoNeedsSave() into the tqual.c routines,
eliminating the requirement for callers to test whether t_infomask changed.
Also, tighten validity checking on buffer IDs in bufmgr.c --- several
routines were paranoid about out-of-range shared buffer numbers but not
about out-of-range local ones, which seems a tad pointless.

Tom Lane 448eb0837f Rearrange order of operations in heap_drop_with_catalog and index_drop
so that we close and flush the doomed relation's relcache entry before
we start to delete the underlying catalog rows, rather than afterwards.
For awhile yesterday I thought that an unexpected relcache entry rebuild
partway through this sequence might explain the infrequent parallel
regression failures we were chasing.  It doesn't, mainly because there's
no CommandCounterIncrement in the sequence and so the deletions aren't
"really" done yet.  But it sure seems like trouble waiting to happen.

Tom Lane efcaf1e868 Some mop-up work for savepoints (nested transactions). Store a small
number of active subtransaction XIDs in each backend's PGPROC entry,
and use this to avoid expensive probes into pg_subtrans during
TransactionIdIsInProgress.  Extend EOXactCallback API to allow add-on
modules to get control at subxact start/end.  (This is deliberately
not compatible with the former API, since any uses of that API probably
need manual review anyway.)  Add basic reference documentation for
SAVEPOINT and related commands.  Minor other cleanups to check off some
of the open issues for subtransactions.

Tom Lane e674707968 Minor code rationalization: FlushRelationBuffers just returns void,
rather than an error code, and does elog(ERROR) not elog(WARNING)
when it detects a problem.  All callers were simply elog(ERROR)'ing on
failure return anyway, and I find it hard to envision a caller that would

Neil Conway d0b4399d81 Reimplement the linked list data structure used throughout the backend.
In the past, we used a 'Lispy' linked list implementation: a "list" was
merely a pointer to the head node of the list. The problem with that
design is that it makes lappend() and length() linear time. This patch
fixes that problem (and others) by maintaining a count of the list
length and a pointer to the tail node along with each head node pointer.
A "list" is now a pointer to a structure containing some meta-data
about the list; the head and tail pointers in that structure refer
to ListCell structures that maintain the actual linked list of nodes.

The function names of the list API have also been changed to, I hope,
be more logically consistent. By default, the old function names are
still available; they will be disabled-by-default once the rest of
the tree has been updated to use the new API names.

Tom Lane 4af3421161 Get rid of rd_nblocks field in relcache entries. Turns out this was
costing us lots more to maintain than it was worth.  On shared tables
it was of exactly zero benefit because we couldn't trust it to be
up to date.  On temp tables it sometimes saved an lseek, but not often
enough to be worth getting excited about.  And the real problem was that
we forced an lseek on every relcache flush in order to update the field.
So all in all it seems best to lose the complexity.

Tom Lane dd16b7aa9e Get rid of cluster.c's apparatus for rebuilding a relation's indexes
in favor of using the REINDEX TABLE apparatus, which does the same thing
simpler and faster.  Also, make TRUNCATE not use cluster.c at all, but
just assign a new relfilenode and REINDEX.  This partially addresses
Hartmut Raschick's complaint from last December that 7.4's TRUNCATE is
an order of magnitude slower than prior releases.  By getting rid of
a lot of unnecessary catalog updates, these changes buy back about a
factor of two (on my system).  The remaining overhead seems associated
with creating and deleting storage files, which we may not be able to
do much about without abandoning transaction safety for TRUNCATE.

Tom Lane 077db40fa1 ALTER TABLE rewrite. New cool stuff:
* ALTER ... ADD COLUMN with defaults and NOT NULL constraints works per SQL
spec.  A default is implemented by rewriting the table with the new value
stored in each row.

* ALTER COLUMN TYPE.  You can change a column's datatype to anything you
want, so long as you can specify how to convert the old value.  Rewrites
the table.  (Possible future improvement: optimize no-op conversions such
as varchar(N) to varchar(N+1).)

* Multiple ALTER actions in a single ALTER TABLE command.  You can perform
any number of column additions, type changes, and constraint additions with
only one pass over the table contents.

Basic documentation provided in ALTER TABLE ref page, but some more docs
work is needed.

Tom Lane f0c9397f80 First steps towards statistics on expressional (nee functional) indexes.
This commit teaches ANALYZE to store such stats in pg_statistic, but
nothing is done yet about teaching the planner to use 'em.
Also, repair longstanding oversight in separate ANALYZE command: it
updated the pg_class.relpages and reltuples counts for the table proper,
but not for indexes.

Tom Lane 87bd956385 Restructure smgr API as per recent proposal. smgr no longer depends on
the relcache, and so the notion of 'blind write' is gone.  This should
improve efficiency in bgwriter and background checkpoint processes.
Internal restructuring in md.c to remove the not-very-useful array of
MdfdVec objects --- might as well just use pointers.
Also remove the long-dead 'persistent main memory' storage manager (mm.c),
since it seems quite unlikely to ever get resurrected.

Tom Lane c607bd693f Clean up the usage of canonicalize_qual(): in particular, be consistent
about whether it is applied before or after eval_const_expressions().
I believe there were some corner cases where the system would fail to
recognize that a partial index is applicable because of the previous
inconsistency.  Store normal rather than 'implicit AND' representations
of constraints and index predicates in the catalogs.

Tom Lane fa5c8a055a Cross-data-type comparisons are now indexable by btrees, pursuant to my
pghackers proposal of 8-Nov.  All the existing cross-type comparison
operators (int2/int4/int8 and float4/float8) have appropriate support.
The original proposal of storing the right-hand-side datatype as part of
the primary key for pg_amop and pg_amproc got modified a bit in the event;
it is easier to store zero as the 'default' case and only store a nonzero
when the operator is actually cross-type.  Along the way, remove the
long-since-defunct bigbox_ops operator class.

Tom Lane c1d62bfd00 Add operator strategy and comparison-value datatype fields to ScanKey.
Remove the 'strategy map' code, which was a large amount of mechanism
that no longer had any use except reverse-mapping from procedure OID to
strategy number.  Passing the strategy number to the index AM in the
first place is simpler and faster.
This is a preliminary step in planned support for cross-datatype index
operations.  I'm committing it now since the ScanKeyEntryInitialize()
API change touches quite a lot of files, and I want to commit those
changes before the tree drifts under me.

Tom Lane a56a016ceb Repair some REINDEX problems per recent discussions. The relcache is
now able to cope with assigning new relfilenode values to nailed-in-cache
indexes, so they can be reindexed using the fully crash-safe method.  This
leaves only shared system indexes as special cases.  Remove the 'index
deactivation' code, since it provides no useful protection in the shared-
index case.  Require reindexing of shared indexes to be done in standalone
mode, but remove other restrictions on REINDEX.  -P (IgnoreSystemIndexes)
now prevents using indexes for lookups, but does not disable index updates.
It is therefore safe to allow from PGOPTIONS.  Upshot: reindexing system catalogs
can be done without a standalone backend for all cases except
shared catalogs.

Tom Lane fc8d970cbc Replace functional-index facility with expressional indexes. Any column
of an index can now be a computed expression instead of a simple variable.
Restrictions on expressions are the same as for predicates (only immutable
functions, no sub-selects).  This fixes problems recently introduced with
inlining SQL functions, because the inlining transformation is applied to
both expression trees so the planner can still match them up.  Along the
way, improve efficiency of handling index predicates (both predicates and
index expressions are now cached by the relcache) and fix 7.3 oversight
that didn't record dependencies of predicate expressions.

Tom Lane df3e7b3a51 In UpdateStats(), don't bother to update the pg_class row if it already
contains the correct statistics.  This is a partial solution for the
problem of allowing concurrent CREATE INDEX commands: unless they commit
at nearly the same instant, the second one will see the first one's
pg_class updates as committed, and won't try to update again, thus
avoiding the 'tuple concurrently updated' failure.

Tom Lane ac355d558e Move most of the error checking for foreign-key constraints out of
parse analysis and into the execution code (in tablecmds.c).  This
eliminates a lot of unreasonably complex code that needed to have two
or more execution paths in case it was dealing with a not-yet-created
table column vs. an already-existing one.  The execution code is always
dealing with already-created tables and so needs only one case.  This
also eliminates some potential race conditions (the table wasn't locked
between parse analysis and execution), makes it easy to fix the gripe
about wrong referenced-column names generating a misleading error message,
and lets us easily add a dependency from the foreign-key constraint to
the unique index that it requires the referenced table to have.  (Cf.
complaint from Kris Jurka 12-Sep-2002 on pgsql-bugs.)

Also, third try at building a deletion mechanism that is not sensitive
to the order in which pg_depend entries are visited.  Adding the above-
mentioned dependency exposed the folly of what dependency.c had been
doing: it failed for cases where B depends on C while both auto-depend
on A.  Dropping A should succeed in this case, but was failing if C
happened to be visited before B.  It appears the only solution is two
separate walks over the dependency tree.

clear infomask status bits in tqual.c --- not safe to do it there.  Don't
try to force output table of a SELECT INTO to have OIDs, either.  Get rid
of unnecessarily complex three-state scheme for TupleDesc.tdhasoids, which
has already caused one recent failure.  Improve documentation.

Tom Lane 15fe086fba Restructure system-catalog index updating logic. Instead of having
hardwired lists of index names for each catalog, use the relcache's
mechanism for caching lists of OIDs of indexes of any table.  This
reduces the common case of updating system catalog indexes to a single
line, makes it much easier to add a new system index (in fact, you
can now do so on-the-fly if you want to), and as a nice side benefit
improves performance a little.  Per recent pghackers discussion.

Bruce Momjian b0f5086e41 oid is needed, it is added at the end of the struct (after the null
bitmap, if present).

Per Tom Lane's suggestion the information whether a tuple has an oid
or not is carried in the tuple descriptor.  For debugging reasons
tdhasoid is of type char, not bool.  There are predefined values for
WITHOID, WITHOUTOID and UNDEFOID.

This patch has been generated against a cvs snapshot from last week
and I don't expect it to apply cleanly to current sources.  While I
post it here for public review, I'm working on a new version against a
current snapshot.  (There's been heavy activity recently; hope to
catch up some day ...)

This is a long patch;  if it is too hard to swallow, I can provide it
in smaller pieces:

Part 1:  Accessor macros
Part 2:  tdhasoid in TupDesc
Part 3:  Regression test
Part 4:  Parameter withoid to heap_addheader
Part 5:  Eliminate t_oid from HeapTupleHeader

Part 2 is the most hairy part because of changes in the executor and
even in the parser;  the other parts are straightforward.

Up to part 4 the patched postmaster stays binary compatible to
databases created with an unpatched version.  Part 5 is small (100
lines) and finally breaks compatibility.

Tom Lane 7c6df91dda Second phase of committing Rod Taylor's pg_depend/pg_constraint patch.
pg_relcheck is gone; CHECK, UNIQUE, PRIMARY KEY, and FOREIGN KEY
constraints all have real live entries in pg_constraint.  pg_depend
exists, and RESTRICT/CASCADE options work on most kinds of DROP;
however, pg_depend is not yet very well populated with dependencies.
(Most of the ones that are present at this point just replace formerly
hardwired associations, such as the implicit drop of a relation's pg_type
entry when the relation is dropped.)  Need to add more logic to create
dependency entries, improve pg_dump to dump constraints in place of
indexes and triggers, and add some regression tests.

HeapTupleHeaderData in setter and getter macros called
HeapTupleHeaderGetXmin, HeapTupleHeaderSetXmin etc.

It also introduces a "virtual" field xvac by defining
HeapTupleHeaderGetXvac and HeapTupleHeaderSetXvac.  Xvac is used by
VACUUM, in fact it is stored in t_cmin.

Tom Lane 959e61e917 Remove global variable scanCommandId in favor of storing a command ID
in snapshots, per my proposal of a few days ago.  Also, tweak heapam.c
routines (heap_insert, heap_update, heap_delete, heap_mark4update) to
be passed the command ID to use, instead of doing GetCurrentCommandID.
For catalog updates they'll still get passed current command ID, but
for updates generated from the main executor they'll get passed the
command ID saved in the snapshot the query is using.  This should fix
some corner cases associated with functions and triggers that advance
current command ID while an outer query is still in progress.

to heap_beginscan, heap_rescan.  I modified pg_proc.h to reflect the

force an initdb because nothing actually looks at those fields.

pg_database, pg_shadow, pg_group, all of which now have potentially-long
fields.  Along the way, get rid of SharedSystemRelationNames list: shared

BKI_SHARED_RELATION macro, while indexes and toast rels inherit sharedness
automatically from their parent table.  Fix some bugs with failure to detoast

Tom Lane 26ac217173 Catcaches can now store negative entries as well as positive ones, to
speed up repetitive failed searches; per pghackers discussion in late
January.  inval.c logic substantially simplified, since we can now treat
inserts and deletes alike as far as inval events are concerned.  Some
repair work needed in heap_create_with_catalog, which turns out to have
been doing CommandCounterIncrement at a point where the new relation has
non-self-consistent catalog entries.  With the new inval code, that
resulted in assert failures during a relcache entry rebuild.

Tom Lane 7863404417 A bunch of changes aimed at reducing backend startup time...
Improve 'pg_internal.init' relcache entry preload mechanism so that it is
safe to use for all system catalogs, and arrange to preload a realistic
set of system-catalog entries instead of only the three nailed-in-cache
indexes that were formerly loaded this way.  Fix mechanism for deleting
out-of-date pg_internal.init files: this must be synchronized with transaction
commit, not just done at random times within transactions.  Drive it off
relcache invalidation mechanism so that no special-case tests are needed.

Cache additional information in relcache entries for indexes (their pg_index
tuples and index-operator OIDs) to eliminate repeated lookups.  Also cache
index opclass info at the per-opclass level to avoid repeated lookups during
relcache load.

Generalize 'systable scan' utilities originally developed by Hiroshi,
move them into genam.c, use in a number of places where there was formerly
ugly code for choosing either heap or index scan.  In particular this allows
simplification of the logic that prevents infinite recursion between syscache
and relcache during startup: we can easily switch to heapscans in relcache.c
when and where needed to avoid recursion, so IndexScanOK becomes simpler and
does not need any expensive initialization.

Eliminate useless opening of a heapscan data structure while doing an indexscan
(this saves an mdnblocks call and thus at least one kernel call).

Tom Lane 7d05310828 Fix problem reported by Alex Korn: if a relation has been dropped and
recreated since the start of our transaction, our first reference to it
errored out because we'd try to reuse our old relcache entry for it.
Do this by accepting SI inval messages just before relcache search in
heap_openr, so that dead relcache entries will be flushed before we
search.  Also, break heap_open/openr into two pairs of routines,
relation_open(r) and heap_open(r).  The relation_open routines make
no tests on relkind and so can be used to open anything that has a
pg_class entry.  The heap_open routines are wrappers that add a relkind
test to preserve their established behavior.  Use the relation_open
routines in several places that had various kluge solutions for opening
rels that might be either heap or index rels.

Also, remove the old 'heap stats' code that's been superseded by Jan's
stats collector, and clean up some inconsistencies in error reporting
between the different types of ALTER TABLE.

Tom Lane 85801a4dbd Rearrange fmgr.c and relcache so that it's possible to keep FmgrInfo
lookup info in the relcache for index access method support functions.
This makes a huge difference for dynamically loaded support functions,
and should save a few cycles even for built-in ones.  Also tweak dfmgr.c
so that load_external_function is called only once, not twice, when
doing fmgr_info for a dynamically loaded function.  All per performance
gripe from Teodor Sigaev, 5-Oct-01.

Tom Lane d435592f33 Repair oversight in recent changes to index-creation: tuple time qual
check *can* return HEAPTUPLE_INSERT_IN_PROGRESS or HEAPTUPLE_DELETE_IN_PROGRESS,
even though we have ShareLock on the relation.  To wit, this can happen
if the tuple was inserted/deleted by our own transaction.  Per report from
Justin Clift 9/23.

Tom Lane f933766ba7 Restructure pg_opclass, pg_amop, and pg_amproc per previous discussions in
pgsql-hackers.  pg_opclass now has a row for each opclass supported by each
index AM, not a row for each opclass name.  This allows pg_opclass to show
directly whether an AM supports an opclass, and furthermore makes it possible
to store additional information about an opclass that might be AM-dependent.
pg_opclass and pg_amop now store "lossy" and "haskeytype" information that we
previously expected the user to remember to provide in CREATE INDEX commands.
Lossiness is no longer an index-level property, but is associated with the
use of a particular operator in a particular index opclass.

Along the way, IndexSupportInitialize now uses the syscaches to retrieve
pg_amop and pg_amproc entries.  I find this reduces backend launch time by
about ten percent, at the cost of a couple more special cases in catcache.c's
IndexScanOK.

Tom Lane bf56f0759b Make OIDs optional, per discussions in pghackers. WITH OIDS is still the
default, but OIDS are removed from many system catalogs that don't need them.
Some interesting side effects: TOAST pointers are 20 bytes not 32 now;
pg_description has a three-column key instead of one.

Bugs fixed in passing: BINARY cursors work again; pg_class.relhaspkey
has some usefulness; pg_dump dumps comments on indexes, rules, and
triggers in a valid order.

Tom Lane c8076f09d2 Restructure index AM interface for index building and index tuple deletion,
per previous discussion on pghackers.  Most of the duplicate code in
different AMs' ambuild routines has been moved out to a common routine
in index.c; this means that all index types now do the right things about
inserting recently-dead tuples, etc.  (I also removed support for EXTEND
INDEX in the ambuild routines, since that's about to go away anyway, and
it cluttered the code a lot.)  The retail indextuple deletion routines have
been replaced by a "bulk delete" routine in which the indexscan is inside
the access method.  I haven't pushed this change as far as it should go yet,
but it should allow considerable simplification of the internal bookkeeping
for deletions.  Also, add flag columns to pg_am to eliminate various
hardcoded tests on AM OIDs, and remove unused pg_am columns.

Fix rtree and gist index types to not attempt to store NULLs; before this,
gist usually crashed, while rtree managed not to crash but computed wacko
bounding boxes for NULL entries (which might have had something to do with
the performance problems we've heard about occasionally).

Add AtEOXact routines to hash, rtree, and gist, all of which have static
state that needs to be reset after an error.  We discovered this need long
ago for btree, but missed the other guys.

Oh, one more thing: concurrent VACUUM is now the default.

Tom Lane e0c9301c87 Install infrastructure for shared-memory free space map. Doesn't actually
do anything yet, but it has the necessary connections to initialization
and so forth.  Make some gestures towards allowing number of blocks in
a relation to be BlockNumber, ie, unsigned int, rather than signed int.
(I doubt I got all the places that are sloppy about it, yet.)  On the
way, replace the hardwired NLOCKS_PER_XACT fudge factor with a GUC
variable.

Tom Lane 1d584f97b9 Clean up various to-do items associated with system indexes:
pg_database now has unique indexes on oid and on datname.
pg_shadow now has unique indexes on usename and on usesysid.
pg_am now has unique index on oid.
pg_opclass now has unique index on oid.
pg_amproc now has unique index on amid+amopclaid+amprocnum.
Remove pg_rewrite's unnecessary index on oid, delete unused RULEOID syscache.
Remove index on pg_listener and associated syscache for performance reasons
(caching rows that are certain to change before you need 'em again is
rather pointless).
Change pg_attrdef's nonunique index on adrelid into a unique index on
adrelid+adnum.

Fix various incorrect settings of pg_class.relisshared, make that the
primary reference point for whether a relation is shared or not.
IsSharedSystemRelationName() is now only consulted to initialize relisshared
during initial creation of tables and indexes.  In theory we might now
support shared user relations, though it's not clear how one would get
entries for them into pg_class &etc of multiple databases.

Fix recently reported bug that pg_attribute rows created for an index all have
the same OID.  (Proof that non-unique OID doesn't matter unless it's
actually used to do lookups ;-))

There's no need to treat pg_trigger, pg_attrdef, pg_relcheck as bootstrap
relations.  Convert them into plain system catalogs without hardwired
entries in pg_class and friends.

Unify global.bki and template1.bki into a single init script postgres.bki,
since the alleged distinction between them was misleading and pointless.
Not to mention that it didn't work for setting up indexes on shared
system relations.

Rationalize locking of pg_shadow, pg_group, pg_attrdef (no need to use
AccessExclusiveLock where ExclusiveLock or even RowExclusiveLock will do).
Also, hold locks until transaction commit where necessary.

Tom Lane 0b370ea7c8 Clean up some minor problems exposed by further thought about Panon's bug
report on old-style functions invoked by RI triggers.  We had a number of
other places that were being sloppy about which memory context FmgrInfo
subsidiary data will be allocated in.  Turns out none of them actually
cause a problem in 7.1, but this is for arcane reasons such as the fact
that old-style triggers aren't supported anyway.  To avoid getting burnt
later, I've restructured the trigger support so that we don't keep trigger
FmgrInfo structs in relcache memory.  Some other related cleanups too:
it's not really necessary to call fmgr_info at all while setting up
the index support info in relcache entries, because those ScanKeyEntry
structs are never used to invoke the functions.  This should speed up
relcache initialization a tiny bit.

Tom Lane f905d65ee3 Rewrite of planner statistics-gathering code. ANALYZE is now available as
a separate statement (though it can still be invoked as part of VACUUM, too).
pg_statistic redesigned to be more flexible about what statistics are
stored.  ANALYZE now collects a list of several of the most common values,
not just one, plus a histogram (not just the min and max values).  Random
sampling is used to make the process reasonably fast even on very large
tables.  The number of values and histogram bins collected is now
user-settable via an ALTER TABLE command.

There is more still to do; the new stats are not being used everywhere
they could be in the planner.  But the remaining changes for this project
should be localized, and the behavior is already better than before.

A not-very-related change is that sorting now makes use of btree comparison
routines if it can find one, rather than invoking '<' twice.

Tom Lane 0d54d6ac44 Clean up handling of tuple descriptors so that result-tuple descriptors
allocated by plan nodes are not leaked at end of query.  This doesn't
really matter for normal queries, but it sure does for queries invoked
repetitively inside SQL functions.  Clean up some other grotty code
associated with tupdescs, and fix a few other memory leaks exposed by
tests with simple SQL functions.

Tom Lane 786f1a59cd Fix all the places that called heap_update() and heap_delete() without
bothering to check the return value --- which meant that in case the
update or delete failed because of a concurrent update, you'd not find
out about it, except by observing later that the transaction produced
the wrong outcome.  There are now subroutines simple_heap_update and
simple_heap_delete that should be used anyplace that you're not prepared
to do the full nine yards of coping with concurrent updates.  In
practice, that seems to mean absolutely everywhere but the executor,
because *noplace* else was checking.

maintained for each cache entry.  A cache entry will not be freed until
the matching ReleaseSysCache call has been executed.  This eliminates
worries about cache entries getting dropped while still in use.  See

Tom Lane 3908473c80 Make DROP TABLE rollback-able: postpone physical file delete until commit.
(WAL logging for this is not done yet, however.)  Clean up a number of really
crufty things that are no longer needed now that DROP behaves nicely.  Make
temp table mapper do the right things when drop or rename affecting a temp
table is rolled back.  Also, remove "relation modified while in use" error
check, in favor of locking tables at first reference and holding that lock
throughout the statement.

Tom Lane 6bfe64032e Cleanup of code for creating index entries. Functional indexes with
pass-by-ref data types --- eg, an index on lower(textfield) --- no longer
leak memory during index creation or update.  Clean up a lot of redundant
code ... did you know that copy, vacuum, truncate, reindex, extend index,
and bootstrap each basically duplicated the main executor's logic for
extracting information about an index and preparing index entries?
Functional indexes should be a little faster now too, due to removal
of repeated function lookups.
CREATE INDEX 'opt_type' clause is deimplemented by these changes,
but I haven't removed it from the parser yet (need to merge with
Thomas' latest change set first).

Jan Wieck 6534444d19 Changed TOAST relations to have relkind RELKIND_TOASTVALUE.
Special handling of TOAST relations during VACUUM. TOAST relations
are vacuumed while the lock on the master table is still active.
The ANALYZE flag doesn't propagate to their vacuuming because the
toaster access routines allways use index access ignoring stats, so
why compute them at all.

Protection of TOAST relations against normal INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE
while offering SELECT for debugging purposes.

Tom Lane cdeca5f590 Make toast-table creation and deletion work somewhat reliably.
Don't go through pg_exec_query_dest(), but directly to the execution
routines.  Also, extend parameter lists so that there's no need to
change the global setting of allowSystemTableMods, a hack that was
certain to cause trouble in the event of any error.

Tom Lane b41f4ab8c4 Use a private memory context to store rule information in each relcache
entry that has rules.  This allows us to release the rule parsetrees
on relcache flush without needing a working freeObject() routine.
Formerly, the rule trees were leaked permanently at relcache flush.
Also, clean up handling of rule creation and deletion --- there was
not sufficient locking of the relation being modified, and there was
no reliable notification of other backends that a relcache reload
was needed.  Also, clean up relcache.c code so that scans of system
tables needed to load a relcache entry are done in the caller's
memory context, not in CacheMemoryContext.  This prevents any
un-pfreed memory from those scans from becoming a permanent memory
leak.

Tom Lane 1aebc3618a First phase of memory management rewrite (see backend/utils/mmgr/README
for details).  It doesn't really do that much yet, since there are no
short-term memory contexts in the executor, but the infrastructure is
in place and long-term contexts are handled reasonably.  A few long-
standing bugs have been fixed, such as 'VACUUM; anything' in a single
query string crashing.  Also, out-of-memory is now considered a
recoverable ERROR, not FATAL.
Eliminate a large amount of crufty, now-dead code in and around
memory management.
Fix problem with holding off SIGTRAP, SIGSEGV, etc in postmaster and
backend startup.

Tom Lane 1ee26b7764 Reimplement nodeMaterial to use a temporary BufFile (or even memory, if the
materialized tupleset is small enough) instead of a temporary relation.
This was something I was thinking of doing anyway for performance, and Jan
says he needs it for TOAST because he doesn't want to cope with toasting
noname relations.  With this change, the 'noname table' support in heap.c
is dead code, and I have accordingly removed it.  Also clean up 'noname'
plan handling in planner --- nonames are either sort or materialize plans,
and it seems less confusing to handle them separately under those names.

Tom Lane edf0b5f0db Get rid of IndexIsUniqueNoCache() kluge by the simple expedient of
passing the index-is-unique flag to index build routines (duh! ...
why wasn't it done this way to begin with?).  Aside from eliminating
an eyesore, this should save a few milliseconds in btree index creation
because a full scan of pg_index is not needed any more.

Tom Lane d03a933ec5 Fix performance problems with pg_index lookups (see, for example,
discussion of 5/19/00).  pg_index is now searched for indexes of a
relation using an indexscan.  Moreover, this is done once and cached
in the relcache entry for the relation, in the form of a list of OIDs
for the indexes.  This list is used by the parser and executor to drive
lookups in the pg_index syscache when they want to know the properties
of the indexes.  Net result: index information will be fully cached
for repetitive operations such as inserts.

Tom Lane f923260ec8 Revise FlushRelationBuffers/ReleaseRelationBuffers per discussion with
Hiroshi.  ReleaseRelationBuffers now removes rel's buffers from pool,
instead of merely marking them nondirty.  The old code would leave valid
buffers for a deleted relation, which didn't cause any known problems
but can't possibly be a good idea.  There were several places which called
ReleaseRelationBuffers *and* FlushRelationBuffers, which is now
unnecessary; but there were others that did not.  FlushRelationBuffers
no longer emits a warning notice if it finds dirty buffers to flush,
because with the current bufmgr behavior that's not an unexpected
condition.  Also, FlushRelationBuffers will flush out all dirty buffers
for the relation regardless of block number.  This ensures that
pg_upgrade's expectations are met about tuple on-row status bits being
up-to-date on disk.  Lastly, tweak BufTableDelete() to clear the
buffer's tag so that no one can mistake it for being a still-valid
buffer for the page it once held.  Formerly, the buffer would not be
found by buffer hashtable searches after BufTableDelete(), but it would
still be thought to belong to its old relation by the routines that
sequentially scan the shared-buffer array.  Again I know of no bugs
caused by that, but it still can't be a good idea.

Tom Lane 6d1efd76fb Fix handling of NULL constraint conditions: per SQL92 spec, a NULL result
from a constraint condition does not violate the constraint (cf. discussion
on pghackers 12/9/99).  Implemented by adding a parameter to ExecQual,
specifying whether to return TRUE or FALSE when the qual result is
really NULL in three-valued boolean logic.  Currently, ExecRelCheck is
the only caller that asks for TRUE, but if we find any other places that
have the wrong response to NULL, it'll be easy to fix them.

Tom Lane 40d3e92541 index_destroy() must grab exclusive access to the parent table
of the index it wants to destroy.  This ensures that no other backend is
actively scanning or updating that index.  Getting exclusive access on
the index alone is NOT sufficient, because the executor is rather
cavalier about getting locks on indexes --- see ExecOpenIndices().
It might be better to grab index locks in the executor, but I'm not
sure the extra lockmanager traffic is really worth it just to make
index_destroy cleaner.

Hiroshi Inoue 2e2189a568 Make it possible to execute crashed CREATE/DROP commands again.

and guarantee the uniqueness of correponding attributes.
heap_create() was changed to take another boolean parameter
which allows to postpone the creation of disk file.

It is used generally(not only for noname relations) now.

The following patch extends the COMMENT ON functionality to the
rest of the database objects beyond just tables, columns, and views. The
grammer of the COMMENT ON statement now looks like:

Tom Lane e812458b27 Several changes here, not very related but touching some of the same files.
* Buffer refcount cleanup (per my "progress report" to pghackers, 9/22).
* Add links to backend PROC structs to sinval's array of per-backend info,
and use these links for routines that need to check the state of all
backends (rather than the slow, complicated search of the ShmemIndex
hashtable that was used before).  Add databaseOID to PROC structs.
* Use this to implement an interlock that prevents DESTROY DATABASE of
a database containing running backends.  (It's a little tricky to prevent
a concurrently-starting backend from getting in there, since the new
backend is not able to lock anything at the time it tries to look up
its database in pg_database.  My solution is to recheck that the DB is
OK at the end of InitPostgres.  It may not be a 100% solution, but it's
a lot better than no interlock at all...)
* In ALTER TABLE RENAME, flush buffers for the relation before doing the
rename of the physical files, to ensure we don't get failures later from
mdblindwrt().
* Update TRUNCATE patch so that it actually compiles against current
sources :-(.
You should do "make clean all" after pulling these changes.

Tom Lane bd272cace6 Mega-commit to make heap_open/heap_openr/heap_close take an
additional argument specifying the kind of lock to acquire/release (or
'NoLock' to do no lock processing).  Ensure that all relations are locked
with some appropriate lock level before being examined --- this ensures
that relevant shared-inval messages have been processed and should prevent
problems caused by concurrent VACUUM.  Fix several bugs having to do with
mismatched increment/decrement of relation ref count and mismatched
heap_open/close (which amounts to the same thing).  A bogus ref count on
a relation doesn't matter much *unless* a SI Inval message happens to
arrive at the wrong time, which is probably why we got away with this
sloppiness for so long.  Repair missing grab of AccessExclusiveLock in
DROP TABLE, ALTER/RENAME TABLE, etc, as noted by Hiroshi.
Recommend 'make clean all' after pulling this update; I modified the
Relation struct layout slightly.
Will post further discussion to pghackers list shortly.

Tom Lane 0041202b98 Disallow DROP TABLE/DROP INDEX inside a transaction block.
We can't support these properly, since once the relation's physical files
are unlinked, there's no way to roll back the transaction.  I suppose
we could postpone the unlink till transaction commit, but then what of
BEGIN; DROP TABLE foo; CREATE TABLE foo; ?
The code does allow dropping a table/index created in the current
transaction block, however, since the post-abort state would be that
the table doesn't exist anyway.

Bruce Momjian 2132e062e1 I made it so it rolled over files at 1MB. My table ended up with 120
segments, and my indexes had 3(Yes, it DOES work!).
DROP TABLE removed ALL segments from the table, but only the main index
segment.

So it looks like removing the table itself is using mdunlink in md.c,
while removing indexes uses FileNameUnlink() which only unlinks 1 file.
As far as I can tell, calling FileNameUnlink() and mdunlink() is basically
the same, except mdunlink() deletes any extra segments.

I've done some testing and it seems to work.  It also passes regression
tests(except float8, geometry and rules, but that's normal).

If this patch is right, this fixes all known multi-segment problems on
Linux.

Bruce Momjian c91dbcc5c7 The following patch finishes primary key support. Previously, when
a field was labelled as a primary key, the system automatically
created a unique index on the field.  This patch extends it so
that the index has the indisprimary field set.  You can pull a list
of primary keys with the followiing select.

SELECT pg_class.relname, pg_attribute.attname
    FROM pg_class, pg_attribute, pg_index
    WHERE pg_class.oid = pg_attribute.attrelid AND
        pg_class.oid = pg_index.indrelid AND
        pg_index.indkey[0] = pg_attribute.attnum AND

There is nothing in this patch that modifies the template database to
set the indisprimary attribute for system tables.  Should they be
changed or should we only be concerned with user tables?

Bruce Momjian 31d825ba07 While investigating a user's complaint, I have found some memory
destructions in 6.4 source using purify.

(1) parser/gram.y:fmtId()

It writes n+3 bytes into n+1 byte-long memory area if mixed case or
non-ascii identifiers given.

(2) catalog/index.c:

ATTRIBUTE_TUPLE_SIZE bytes are allocated but
sizeof(FormData_pg_attribute) bytes are written. Note that
ATTRIBUTE_TUPLE_SIZE is smaller than
sizeof(FormData_pg_attribute). (for example, on solaris 2.6,

Bruce Momjian a53ea467e1 Hi all,
I  don't know if this is really related to the initdb problem
    discussion (haven't followed it enough). But seems so because
    it  fixes  a  damn  problem  during  index tuple insertion on
    CREATE TABLE into pg_attribute_relid_attnum_index.

    Anyway - this bug was really hard to find. During startup the
    relcache  reads  in  some  prepared  information  about index
    strategies from a file and then  reinitializes  the  function
    pointers  inside  the  scanKey data.  But for sake it assumed
    single attribute index tuples (hasn't that changed recently).
    Thus not all the strategies scanKey entries where initialized
    properly,  resulting  in  invalid  addresses  for  the  btree
    comparision functions.

    With  the  patch  at  the  end  the  regression  tests passed
    excellent except for the sanity_check that crashed at  vacuum
    and the misc test where the select unique1 from onek2 outputs
    the two rows in different order.

Bruce Momjian 09baa3cc81 This patch...
1. Removes the unnecessary "#define AbcRegProcedure 123"'s from
pg_proc.h.

2. Changes those #defines to use the names already defined in
fmgr.h.

3. Forces the make of fmgr.h in backend/Makefile instead of having
it
   made as a dependency in access/common/Makefile  *hack*hack*hack*

4. Rearranged the #includes to a less helter-skelter arrangement,
also
    changing <file.h> to "file.h" to signify a non-system header.

5. Removed "pg_proc.h" from files where its only purpose was for
the
   #defines removed in item #1.

6. Added "fmgr.h" to each file changed for completeness sake.

Turns out that #6 was not necessary for some files because fmgr.h
was being included in a roundabout way SIX levels deep by the first
include.

"access/genam.h"
 ->"access/relscan.h"
   ->"utils/rel.h"
     ->"access/strat.h"
       ->"access/skey.h"
	 ->"fmgr.h"

So adding fmgr.h really didn't add anything to the compile, hopefully
just made it clearer to the programmer.

What follows is a set of diffs that cleans up the usage of BLCKSZ.

As a side effect, the person compiling the code can change the
value of BLCKSZ _at_their_own_risk_.  By that, I mean that I've
tried it here at 4096 and 16384 with no ill-effects.  A value
of 4096 _shouldn't_ affect much as far as the kernel/file system
goes, but making it bigger than 8192 can have severe consequences
if you don't know what you're doing.  16394 worked for me, _BUT_
when I went to 32768 and did an initdb, the SCSI driver broke and
the partition that I was running under went to hell in a hand
basket. Had to reboot and do a good bit of fsck'ing to fix things up.

The patch can be safely applied though.  Just leave BLCKSZ = 8192
and everything is as before.  It basically only cleans up all of the
references to BLCKSZ in the code.

If this patch is applied, a comment in the config.h file though above
the BLCKSZ define with warning about monkeying around with it would
be a good idea.

Bruce Momjian 63df35e249 This patch changes quite a few instances of references of Oid's
as ints and longs.  Touches on quite a few function args as
well.  Most other files look ok as far as Oids go...still checking
though...

Since Oids are type'd as unsigned ints, they should prolly be used
with the %ud format string in elog and sprintf messages.  Not sure
what kind of strangeness that could produce.

Changes:

        * Unique index capability works using the syntax 'create unique
          index'.

        * Duplicate OID's in the system tables are removed.  I put
          little scripts called 'duplicate_oids' and 'find_oid' in
          include/catalog that help to find and remove duplicate OID's.
          I also moved 'unused_oids' from backend/catalog to
          include/catalog, since it has to be in the same directory
          as the include files in order to work.

        * The backend tries converting the name of a function or aggregate
          to all lowercase if the original name given doesn't work (mostly
          for compatibility with ODBC).

        * You can 'SELECT NULL' to your heart's content.

        * I put my _bt_updateitem fix in instead, which uses
          _bt_insertonpg so that even if the new key is so big that
          the page has to be split, everything still works.

        * All literal references to system catalog OID's have been
          replaced with references to define'd constants from the catalog
          header files.

        * I added a couple of node copy functions.  I think this was a
          preliminary attempt to get rules to work.

Here's a couple more small fixes that I've made to make my runtime
checker happy with the code.  More along the lines of those that
I sent in the past, ie, a pointer to an array != the name of
an array.  The last patch is that I mailed about yesterday -- I got
two replies of "do it", so it's done.  As far as I can tell, however,
the function in question is never called by pg95, so either way
it can't hurt...
