2c6af4f442 Move keywords.c/kwlookup.c into src/common/.
Now that we have src/common/ for code shared between frontend and backend,
we can get rid of (most of) the klugy ways that the keyword table and
keyword lookup code were formerly shared between different uses.
This is a first step towards a more general plan of getting rid of
special-purpose kluges for sharing code in src/bin/.

I chose to merge kwlookup.c back into keywords.c, as it once was, and
always has been so far as keywords.h is concerned. We could have
kept them separate, but there is noplace that uses ScanKeywordLookup
without also wanting access to the backend's keyword list, so there
seems little point.

ecpg is still a bit weird, but at least now the trickiness is documented.

I think that the MSVC build script should require no adjustments beyond
what's done here ... but we'll soon find out.

72b1e3a21f Build backend/parser/scan.l and interfaces/ecpg/preproc/pgc.l standalone.
Now that we know about the %top{} trick, we can revert to building flex
lexers as separate .o files. This is worth doing for a couple of reasons
besides sheer cleanliness. We can narrow the scope of the -Wno-error flag
that's forced on scan.c. Also, since these grammar and lexer files are
so large, splitting them into separate build targets should have some
advantages in build speed, particularly in parallel or ccache'd builds.

We have quite a few other .l files that could be changed likewise, but the
above arguments don't apply to them, so the benefit of fixing them seems
pretty minimal. Leave the rest for some other day.

8521d13194 Refactor flex and bison make rules
Numerous flex and bison make rules have appeared in the source tree
over time, and they are all virtually identical, so we can replace
them by pattern rules with some variables for customization.

Users of pgxs will also be able to benefit from this.

55c1687a97 Run check_keywords.pl anytime gram.c is rebuilt.
This script is a bit slow, but still it only takes a fraction of the time
the bison run does, so the overhead doesn't seem intolerable. And we
definitely need some mechanical aid here, because people keep missing
the need to add new keywords to the appropriate keyword-list production.

While at it, I moved check_keywords.pl from src/tools into
src/backend/parser where it's actually used, and did some very minor
cleanup on the script.

b310b6e31c Revise collation derivation method and expression-tree representation.
All expression nodes now have an explicit output-collation field, unless
they are known to only return a noncollatable data type (such as boolean
or record). Also, nodes that can invoke collation-aware functions store
a separate field that is the collation value to pass to the function.
This avoids confusion that arises when a function has collatable inputs
and noncollatable output type, or vice versa.

Also, replace the parser's on-the-fly collation assignment method with
a post-pass over the completed expression tree. This allows us to use
a more complex (and hopefully more nearly spec-compliant) assignment
rule without paying for it in extra storage in every expression node.

Fix assorted bugs in the planner's handling of collations by making
collation one of the defining properties of an EquivalenceClass and
by converting CollateExprs into discardable RelabelType nodes during
expression preprocessing.

fb5d05805b Implement parser hooks for processing ColumnRef and ParamRef nodes, as per my
recent proposal. As proof of concept, remove knowledge of Params from the
core parser, arranging for them to be handled entirely by parser hook
functions. It turns out we need an additional hook for that --- I had
forgotten about the code that handles inferring a parameter's type from
context.

This is a preliminary step towards letting plpgsql handle its variables
through parser hooks. Additional work remains to be done to expose the
facility through SPI, but I think this is all the changes needed in the core
parser.

328d235571 Separate the key word list that lived in keywords.c into a new header file
kwlist.h, to avoid having to link the backend object file into other programs
like pg_dump. We can now simply symlink a single source file from the backend
(kwlookup.c, containing the shared routine ScanKeywordLookup) and compile it
locally, which is a lot cleaner.

44d5be0e53 Implement SQL-standard WITH clauses, including WITH RECURSIVE.
There are some unimplemented aspects: recursive queries must use UNION ALL
(should allow UNION too), and we don't have SEARCH or CYCLE clauses.
These might or might not get done for 8.4, but even without them it's a
pretty useful feature.

There are also a couple of small loose ends and definitional quibbles,
which I'll send a memo about to pgsql-hackers shortly. But let's land
the patch now so we can get on with other development.

46379d6e60 Separate parse-analysis for utility commands out of parser/analyze.c
(which now deals only in optimizable statements), and put that code
into a new file parser/parse_utilcmd.c. This helps clarify and enforce
the design rule that utility statements shouldn't be processed during
the regular parse analysis phase; all interpretation of their meaning
should happen after they are given to ProcessUtility to execute.
(We need this because we don't retain any locks for a utility statement
that's in a plan cache, nor have any way to detect that it's stale.)

We are also able to simplify the API for parse_analyze() and related
routines, because they will now always return exactly one Query structure.

In passing, fix bug #3403 concerning trying to add a serial column to
an existing temp table (this is largely Heikki's work, but we needed
all that restructuring to make it safe).

0780ce6a93 Re-introduce the yylex filter function formerly used to support UNION
JOIN, which I removed in a recent fit of over-optimism that we wouldn't
have any future use for it. Now it's needed to support disambiguating

grammar productions for WITH CHECK OPTION.

012abebab1 Remove the stub support we had for UNION JOIN; per discussion, this is
not likely ever to be implemented seeing it's been removed from SQL2003.
This allows getting rid of the 'filter' version of yylex() that we had in
parser.c, which should save at least a few microseconds in parsing.

cab9437a43 Arrange to compile flex output files as inclusions into other files
(usually bison output files), not as standalone files. This hack
works around flex's insistence on including <stdio.h> before we are

Updated backend/bootstrap and backend/parser makefile to make them
marginally builddir aware and fix the usual set of things.

Add rule to automatically remake config.h dependent on config.h.in and

package.) On a good day we should now have a complete and accurate set
of dependencies throughout everything.

e3059fc0f5 Gen_fmgrtab.sh is strange: it is a platform dependent way (because it uses
CPP) to create platform independent files. Unfortunately, that means that
every config.status (or configure) run invariably causes a relink of the
postmaster and also that we can't put these files in the distribution
(usefully). So we make it a little smarter: when the output files already
exist and it notices that it would recreate them in identical form, it
doesn't touch them. In order to avoid re-running the make rule all the time
we update a timestamp file instead.

Update release_prep accordingly. Also make Gen_fmgrtab.sh use the awk that
is detected at configure time, not necessarily named `awk' and have it check
for exit statuses a little better.

In other news... Remove USE_LOCALE from the templates, it was set to `no'
everywhere anyway. Also remove YACC and YFLAGS from the templates, configure
is smart enough to find bison or yacc itself. Use AC_PROG_YACC for that
instead of the hand-crafted code. Do not set YFLAGS to `-d'. The make rules
that need this flag should explicitly invoke it. YFLAGS should be a user
variable. Update the makefiles to that effect.

210055ad61 here are some patches for 6.5.0 which I already submitted but have never
been applied. The patches are in the .tar.gz attachment at the end:

varchar-array.patch this patch adds support for arrays of bpchar() and
varchar(), which where always missing from postgres.

These datatypes can be used to replace the _char4,
_char8, etc., which were dropped some time ago.

block-size.patch this patch fixes many errors in the parser and other
program which happen with very large query statements
(> 8K) when using a page size larger than 8192.

This patch is needed if you want to submit queries
larger than 8K. Postgres supports tuples up to 32K
but you can't insert them because you can't submit
queries larger than 8K. My patch fixes this problem.

The patch also replaces all the occurrences of `8192'
and `1<<13' in the sources with the proper constants
defined in include files. You should now never find
8192 hardwired in C code, just to make code clearer.

bf00bbb0c4 I really hope that I haven't missed anything in this one...
From: t-ishii@sra.co.jp

Attached are patches to enhance the multi-byte support. (patches are
against 7/18 snapshot)

* determine encoding at initdb/createdb rather than compile time

Now initdb/createdb has an option to specify the encoding. Also, I
modified the syntax of CREATE DATABASE to accept encoding option. See
README.mb for more details.

For this purpose I have added new column "encoding" to pg_database.
Also pg_attribute and pg_class are changed to catch up the
modification to pg_database. Actually I haved added pg_database_mb.h,
pg_attribute_mb.h and pg_class_mb.h. These are used only when MB is
enabled. The reason having separate files is I couldn't find a way to
use ifdef or whatever in those files. I have to admit it looks
ugly. No way.

* support for PGCLIENTENCODING when issuing COPY command

commands/copy.c modified.

* support for SQL92 syntax "SET NAMES"

See gram.y.

* support for LATIN2-5
* add UNICODE regression test case
* new test suite for MB

New directory test/mb added.

* clean up source files

Basic idea is to have MB's own subdirectory for easier maintenance.
These are include/mb and backend/utils/mb.

1e801a8f16 Hi,
Attached you'll find a (big) patch that fixes make dep and make
depend in all Makefiles where I found it to be appropriate.

It also removes the dependency in Makefile.global for NAMEDATALEN
and OIDNAMELEN by making backend/catalog/genbki.sh and bin/initdb/initdb.sh
a little smarter.

This no longer requires initdb.sh that is turned into initdb with
a sed script when installing Postgres, hence initdb.sh should be
renamed to initdb (after the patch has been applied :-) )

This patch is against the 6.3 sources, as it took a while to
complete.

Please review and apply,

Cheers,
