Peter Eisentraut efbfb64241 Improve new hash partition bound check error messages
For the error message "every hash partition modulus must be a factor
of the next larger modulus", add a detail message that shows the
particular numbers and existing partition involved.  Also comment the
code more.

Tom Lane f003a7522b Remove [Merge]AppendPath.partitioned_rels.
It turns out that the calculation of [Merge]AppendPath.partitioned_rels
in allpaths.c is faulty and sometimes omits relevant non-leaf partitions,
allowing an assertion added by commit a929e17e5a to trigger.  Rather
than fix that, it seems better to get rid of those fields altogether.
We don't really need the info until create_plan time, and calculating
it once for the selected plan should be cheaper than calculating it
for each append path we consider.

The preceding two commits did away with all use of the partitioned_rels
values; this commit just mechanically removes the fields and the code
that calculated them.

Tom Lane fb2d645dd5 Revise make_partition_pruneinfo to not use its partitioned_rels input.
It turns out that the calculation of [Merge]AppendPath.partitioned_rels
in allpaths.c is faulty and sometimes omits relevant non-leaf partitions,
allowing an assertion added by commit a929e17e5a to trigger.  Rather
than fix that, it seems better to get rid of those fields altogether.
We don't really need the info until create_plan time, and calculating
it once for the selected plan should be cheaper than calculating it
for each append path we consider.

As a first step, teach make_partition_pruneinfo to collect the relevant
partitioned tables for itself.  It's not hard to do so by traversing
from child tables up to parents using the AppendRelInfo links.

While here, make some minor stylistic improvements; mainly, don't use
the "Relids" alias for bitmapsets that are not identities of any
relation considered by the planner.  Try to document the logic better,
too.

No backpatch, as there does not seem to be a live problem before
a929e17e5a.  Also no new regression test; the code where the bug
was will be gone at the end of this patch series, so it seems a
bit pointless to memorialize the issue.

Tom Lane 1d9351a87c Fix hash partition pruning with asymmetric partition sets.
perform_pruning_combine_step() was not taught about the number of
partition indexes used in hash partitioning; more embarrassingly,
get_matching_hash_bounds() also had it wrong.  These errors are masked
in the common case where all the partitions have the same modulus
and no partition is missing.  However, with missing or unequal-size
partitions, we could erroneously prune some partitions that need
to be scanned, leading to silently wrong query answers.

While a minimal-footprint fix for this could be to export
get_partition_bound_num_indexes and make the incorrect functions use it,
I'm of the opinion that that function should never have existed in the
first place.  It's not reasonable data structure design that
PartitionBoundInfoData lacks any explicit record of the length of
its indexes[] array.  Perhaps that was all right when it could always
be assumed equal to ndatums, but something should have been done about
it as soon as that stopped being true.  Putting in an explicit
"nindexes" field makes both partition_bounds_equal() and
partition_bounds_copy() simpler, safer, and faster than before,
and removes explicit knowledge of the number-of-partition-indexes
rules from some other places too.

This change also makes get_hash_partition_greatest_modulus obsolete.
I left that in place in case any external code uses it, but no core
code does anymore.

Per bug #16840 from Michał Albrycht.  Back-patch to v11 where the
hash partitioning code came in.  (In the back branches, add the new
field at the end of PartitionBoundInfoData to minimize ABI risks.)

Tom Lane b3817f5f77 Improve hash_create()'s API for some added robustness.
Invent a new flag bit HASH_STRINGS to specify C-string hashing, which
was formerly the default; and add assertions insisting that exactly
one of the bits HASH_STRINGS, HASH_BLOBS, and HASH_FUNCTION be set.
This is in hopes of preventing recurrences of the type of oversight
fixed in commit a1b8aa1e4 (i.e., mistakenly omitting HASH_BLOBS).

Also, when HASH_STRINGS is specified, insist that the keysize be
more than 8 bytes.  This is a heuristic, but it should catch
accidental use of HASH_STRINGS for integer or pointer keys.
(Nearly all existing use-cases set the keysize to NAMEDATALEN or
more, so there's little reason to think this restriction should
be problematic.)

Tweak hash_create() to insist that the HASH_ELEM flag be set, and
remove the defaults it had for keysize and entrysize.  Since those
defaults were undocumented and basically useless, no callers
omitted HASH_ELEM anyway.

Also, remove memset's zeroing the HASHCTL parameter struct from
those callers that had one.  This has never been really necessary,
and while it wasn't a bad coding convention it was confusing that
some callers did it and some did not.  We might as well save a few
cycles by standardizing on "not".

Also improve the documentation for hash_create().

In passing, improve reinit.c's usage of a hash table by storing
the key as a binary Oid rather than a string; and, since that's
a temporary hash table, allocate it in CurrentMemoryContext for
neatness.

Tom Lane 4025e6c466 Do not return NULL for error cases in satisfies_hash_partition().
Since this function is used as a CHECK constraint condition,
returning NULL is tantamount to returning TRUE, which would have the
effect of letting in a row that doesn't satisfy the hash condition.
Admittedly, the cases for which this is done should be unreachable
in practice, but that doesn't make it any less a bad idea.  It also
seems like a dartboard was used to decide which error cases should
throw errors as opposed to returning NULL.

For the checks for NULL input values, I just switched it to returning
false.  There's some argument that an error would be better; but the
case really should be can't-happen in a generated hash constraint,
so it's likely not worth more code for.

For the parent-relation-open-failure case, it seems like we might
as well let relation_open throw an error, instead of having an
impossible-to-diagnose constraint failure.

Back-patch to v11 where this code came in.

Peter Eisentraut bdc4edbea6 Move catalog index declarations
Move the system catalog index declarations from catalog/indexing.h to
the respective parent tables' catalog/pg_*.h files.  The original
reason for having it split was that the old genbki system produced the
output in the order of the catalog files it read, so all the indexing
stuff needed to come separately.  But this is no longer the case, and
keeping it together makes more sense.

David Rowley a929e17e5a Allow run-time pruning on nested Append/MergeAppend nodes
Previously we only tagged on the required information to allow the
executor to perform run-time partition pruning for Append/MergeAppend
nodes belonging to base relations.  It was thought that nested
Append/MergeAppend nodes were just about always pulled up into the
top-level Append/MergeAppend and that making the run-time pruning info for
any sub Append/MergeAppend nodes was a waste of time.  However, that was
likely badly thought through.

Some examples of cases we're unable to pullup nested Append/MergeAppends
are: 1) Parallel Append nodes with a mix of parallel and non-parallel
paths into a Parallel Append.  2) When planning an ordered Append scan a
sub-partition which is unordered may require a nested MergeAppend path to
ensure sub-partitions don't mix up the order of tuples being fed into the
top-level Append.

Unfortunately, it was not just as simple as removing the lines in
createplan.c which were purposefully not building the run-time pruning
info for anything but RELOPT_BASEREL relations.  The code in
add_paths_to_append_rel() was far too sloppy about which partitioned_rels
it included for the Append/MergeAppend paths.  The original code there
would always assume accumulate_append_subpath() would pull each sub-Append
and sub-MergeAppend path into the top-level path.  While it does not
appear that there were any actual bugs caused by having the additional
partitioned table RT indexes recorded, what it did mean is that later in
planning, when we built the run-time pruning info that we wasted effort
and built PartitionedRelPruneInfos for partitioned tables that we had no
subpaths for the executor to run-time prune.

Here we tighten that up so that partitioned_rels only ever contains the RT
index for partitioned tables which actually have subpaths in the given
Append/MergeAppend.  We can now Assert that every PartitionedRelPruneInfo
has a non-empty present_parts.  That should allow us to catch any weird
corner cases that have been missed.

In passing, it seems there is no longer a good reason to have the
AppendPath and MergeAppendPath's partitioned_rel fields a List of IntList.
We can simply have a List of Relids instead.  This is more compact in
memory and faster to add new members to.  We still know which is the root
level partition as these always have a lower relid than their children.
Previously this field was used for more things, but run-time partition
pruning now remains the only user of it and it has no need for a List of
IntLists.

Here we also get rid of the RelOptInfo partitioned_child_rels field. This
is what was previously used to (sometimes incorrectly) set the
Append/MergeAppend path's partitioned_rels field.  That was the only usage
of that field, so we can happily just remove it.

I also couldn't resist changing some nearby code to make use of the newly
added for_each_from macro so we can skip the first element in the list
without checking if the current item was the first one on each
iteration.

A bug report from Andreas Kretschmer prompted all this work, however,
after some consideration, I'm not personally classing this as a bug fix.
So no backpatch.  In Andreas' test case, it just wasn't that clear that
there was a nested Append since the top-level Append just had a single
sub-path which was pulled up a level, per 8edd0e794.

Tom Lane 970c050575 Fix assertion failure in check_new_partition_bound().
Commit 6b2c4e59d was overly confident about not being able to see
a negative cmpval result from partition_range_bsearch().  Adjust
the code to cope with that.

Tom Lane 6b2c4e59d0 Improve error cursor positions for problems with partition bounds.
We failed to pass down the query string to check_new_partition_bound,
so that its attempts to provide error cursor positions were for naught;
one must have the query string to get parser_errposition to do anything.
Adjust its API to require a ParseState to be passed down.

Also, improve the logic inside check_new_partition_bound so that the
cursor points at the partition bound for the specific column causing
the issue, when one can be identified.

That part is also for naught if we can't determine the query position of
the column with the problem.  Improve transformPartitionBoundValue so
that it makes sure that const-simplified partition expressions will be
properly labeled with positions.  In passing, skip calling evaluate_expr
if the value is already a Const, which is surely the most common case.

Tom Lane 38a2d70329 Remove some more useless assignments.
Found with clang's scan-build tool.  It also whines about a lot of
other dead stores that we should *not* change IMO, either as a matter
of style or future-proofing.  But these places seem like clear
oversights.

Etsuro Fujita 199cec9779 Fix yet another issue with step generation in partition pruning.
Commit 13838740f fixed some issues with step generation in partition
pruning, but there was yet another one: get_steps_using_prefix() assumes
that clauses in the passed-in prefix list are sorted in ascending order
of their partition key numbers, but the caller failed to ensure this for
range partitioning, which led to an assertion failure in debug builds.
Adjust the caller function to arrange the clauses in the prefix list in
the required order for range partitioning.

Back-patch to v11, like the previous commit.

Etsuro Fujita 13838740f6 Fix some issues with step generation in partition pruning.
In the case of range partitioning, get_steps_using_prefix() assumes that
the passed-in prefix list contains at least one clause for each of the
partition keys earlier than one specified in the passed-in
step_lastkeyno, but the caller (ie, gen_prune_steps_from_opexps())
didn't take it into account, which led to a server crash or incorrect
results when the list contained no clauses for such partition keys, as
reported in bug #16500 and #16501 from Kobayashi Hisanori.  Update the
caller to call that function only when the list created there contains
at least one clause for each of the earlier partition keys in the case
of range partitioning.

While at it, fix some other issues:

* The list to pass to get_steps_using_prefix() is allowed to contain
  multiple clauses for the same partition key, as described in the
  comment for that function, but that function actually assumed that the
  list contained just a single clause for each of middle partition keys,
  which led to an assertion failure when the list contained multiple
  clauses for such partition keys.  Update that function to match the
  comment.
* In the case of hash partitioning, partition keys are allowed to be
  NULL, in which case the list to pass to get_steps_using_prefix()
  contains no clauses for NULL partition keys, but that function treats
  that case as like the case of range partitioning, which led to the
  assertion failure.  Update the assertion test to take into account
  NULL partition keys in the case of hash partitioning.
* Fix a typo in a comment in get_steps_using_prefix_recurse().
* gen_partprune_steps() failed to detect self-contradiction from
  strict-qual clauses and an IS NULL clause for the same partition key
  in some cases, producing incorrect partition-pruning steps, which led
  to incorrect results of partition pruning, but didn't cause any
  user-visible problems fortunately, as the self-contradiction is
  detected later in the query planning.  Update that function to detect
  the self-contradiction.

Per bug #16500 and #16501 from Kobayashi Hisanori.  Patch by me, initial
diagnosis for the reported issue and review by Dmitry Dolgov.
Back-patch to v11, where partition pruning was introduced.

Tom Lane 5cbfce562f Initial pgindent and pgperltidy run for v13.
Includes some manual cleanup of places that pgindent messed up,
most of which weren't per project style anyway.

Notably, it seems some people didn't absorb the style rules of
commit c9d297751, because there were a bunch of new occurrences
of function calls with a newline just after the left paren, all
with faulty expectations about how the rest of the call would get
indented.

Use it at level 4, a bit more restrictive than the default level, and
tweak our commanding comments to FALLTHROUGH.

(However, leave zic.c alone, since it's external code; to avoid the
warnings that would appear there, change CFLAGS for that file in the
Makefile.)

Etsuro Fujita c8434d64ce Allow partitionwise joins in more cases.
Previously, the partitionwise join technique only allowed partitionwise
join when input partitioned tables had exactly the same partition
bounds.  This commit extends the technique to some cases when the tables
have different partition bounds, by using an advanced partition-matching
algorithm introduced by this commit.  For both the input partitioned
tables, the algorithm checks whether every partition of one input
partitioned table only matches one partition of the other input
partitioned table at most, and vice versa.  In such a case the join
between the tables can be broken down into joins between the matching
partitions, so the algorithm produces the pairs of the matching
partitions, plus the partition bounds for the join relation, to allow
partitionwise join for computing the join.  Currently, the algorithm
works for list-partitioned and range-partitioned tables, but not
hash-partitioned tables.  See comments in partition_bounds_merge().

Amit Kapila 33753ac9d7 Add object names to partition integrity violations.
All errors of SQLSTATE class 23 should include the name of an object
associated with the error in separate fields of the error report message.
We do this so that applications need not try to extract them from the
possibly-localized human-readable text of the message.

Robert Haas 05d8449e73 Move src/backend/utils/hash/hashfn.c to src/common
This also involves renaming src/include/utils/hashutils.h, which
becomes src/include/common/hashfn.h. Perhaps an argument can be
made for keeping the hashutils.h name, but it seemed more
consistent to make it match the name of the file, and also more
descriptive of what is actually going on here.

Patch by me, reviewed by Suraj Kharage and Mark Dilger. Off-list
advice on how not to break the Windows build from Davinder Singh
and Amit Kapila.

Etsuro Fujita 032f9ae012 Avoid redundant checks in partition_bounds_copy().
Previously, partition_bounds_copy() checked whether the strategy for the
given partition bounds was hash or not, and then determined the number of
elements in the datums in the datums array for the partition bounds, on
each iteration of the loop for copying the datums array, but there is no
need to do that.  Perform the checks only once before the loop iteration.

Tom Lane bb4114a4e2 Allow whole-row Vars to be used in partitioning expressions.
In the wake of commit 5b9312378, there's no particular reason
for this restriction (previously, it was problematic because of
the implied rowtype reference).  A simple constraint on a whole-row
Var probably isn't that useful, but conceivably somebody would want
to pass one to a function that extracts a partitioning key.  Besides
which, we're expending much more code to enforce the restriction than
we save by having it, since the latter quantity is now zero.
So drop the restriction.

Tom Lane 42f74f4936 Remove equalPartitionDescs().
This is dead code in the wake of the previous commit.
We can always add it back if we need it again someday.

Tom Lane 5b9312378e Load relcache entries' partitioning data on-demand, not immediately.
Formerly the rd_partkey and rd_partdesc data structures were always
populated immediately when a relcache entry was built or rebuilt.
This patch changes things so that they are populated only when they
are first requested.  (Hence, callers *must* now always use
RelationGetPartitionKey or RelationGetPartitionDesc; just fetching
the pointer directly is no longer acceptable.)

This seems to have some performance benefits, but the main reason to do
it is that it eliminates a recursive-reload failure that occurs if the
partkey or partdesc expressions contain any references to the relation's
rowtype (as discovered by Amit Langote).  In retrospect, since loading
these data structures might result in execution of nearly-arbitrary code
via eval_const_expressions, it was a dumb idea to require that to happen
during relcache entry rebuild.

Also, fix things so that old copies of a relcache partition descriptor
will be dropped when the cache entry's refcount goes to zero.  In the
previous coding it was possible for such copies to survive for the
lifetime of the session, as I'd complained of in a previous discussion.
(This management technique still isn't perfect, but it's better than
before.)  Improve the commentary explaining how that works and why
it's safe to hand out direct pointers to these relcache substructures.

In passing, improve RelationBuildPartitionDesc by using the same
memory-context-parent-swap approach used by RelationBuildPartitionKey,
thereby making it less dependent on strong assumptions about what
partition_bounds_copy does.  Avoid doing get_rel_relkind in the
critical section, too.

Patch by Amit Langote and Tom Lane; Robert Haas deserves some credit
for prior work in the area, too.  Although this is a pre-existing
problem, no back-patch: the patch seems too invasive to be safe to
back-patch, and the bug it fixes is a corner case that seems
relatively unlikely to cause problems in the field.

Michael Paquier 8ce3aa9b59 Rename files and headers related to index AM
The following renaming is done so as source files related to index
access methods are more consistent with table access methods (the
original names used for index AMs ware too generic, and could be
confused as including features related to table AMs):
- amapi.h -> indexam.h.
- amapi.c -> indexamapi.c.  Here we have an equivalent with
backend/access/table/tableamapi.c.
- amvalidate.c -> indexamvalidate.c.
- amvalidate.h -> indexamvalidate.h.
- genam.c -> indexgenam.c.
- genam.h -> indexgenam.h.

This has been discussed during the development of v12 when table AM was
worked on, but the renaming never happened.

Andres Freund 01368e5d9d Split all OBJS style lines in makefiles into one-line-per-entry style.
When maintaining or merging patches, one of the most common sources
for conflicts are the list of objects in makefiles. Especially when
the split across lines has been changed on both sides, which is
somewhat common due to attempting to stay below 80 columns, those
conflicts are unnecessarily laborious to resolve.

By splitting, and alphabetically sorting, OBJS style lines into one
object per line, conflicts should be less frequent, and easier to
resolve when they still occur.

Tom Lane db43831899 Avoid using INFO elevel for what are fundamentally debug messages.
Commit 6f6b99d13 stuck an INFO message into the fast path for
checking partition constraints, for no very good reason except
that it made it easy for the regression tests to verify that
that path was taken.  Assorted later patches did likewise,
increasing the unsuppressable-chatter level from ALTER TABLE
even more.  This isn't good for the user experience, so let's
drop these messages down to DEBUG1 where they belong.  So as
not to have a loss of test coverage, create a TAP test that
runs the relevant queries with client_min_messages = DEBUG1
and greps for the expected messages.

This testing method is a bit brute-force --- in particular,
it duplicates the execution of a fair amount of the core
create_table and alter_table tests.  We experimented with
other solutions, but running any significant amount of
standard testing with client_min_messages = DEBUG1 seems
to have a lot of output-stability pitfalls, cf commits
bbb96c370 and 5655565c0.  Possibly at some point we'll look
into whether we can reduce the amount of test duplication.

Backpatch into v12, because some of these messages are new
in v12 and we don't really want to ship it that way.

Andres Freund 6a04d345fd Don't include utils/array.h from acl.h.
For most uses of acl.h the details of how "Acl" internally looks like
are irrelevant. It might make sense to move a lot of the
implementation details into a separate header at a later point.

The main motivation of this change is to avoid including fmgr.h (via
array.h, which needs it for exposed structs) in a lot of files that
otherwise don't need it. A subsequent commit will remove the fmgr.h
include from a lot of files.

Directly include utils/array.h and utils/expandeddatum.h from the
files that need them, but previously included them indirectly, via
acl.h.

Alvaro Herrera 815ef2f568 Don't constraint-exclude partitioned tables as much
We only need to invoke constraint exclusion on partitioned tables when
they are a partition, and they themselves contain a default partition;
it's not necessary otherwise, and it's expensive, so avoid it.  Also, we
were trying once for each clause separately, but we can do it for all
the clauses at once.

While at it, centralize setting of RelOptInfo->partition_qual instead of
computing it in slightly different ways in different places.

Tom Lane 5ee190f8ec Rationalize use of list_concat + list_copy combinations.
In the wake of commit 1cff1b95a, the result of list_concat no longer
shares the ListCells of the second input.  Therefore, we can replace
"list_concat(x, list_copy(y))" with just "list_concat(x, y)".

To improve call sites that were list_copy'ing the first argument,
or both arguments, invent "list_concat_copy()" which produces a new
list sharing no ListCells with either input.  (This is a bit faster
than "list_concat(list_copy(x), y)" because it makes the result list
the right size to start with.)

In call sites that were not list_copy'ing the second argument, the new
semantics mean that we are usually leaking the second List's storage,
since typically there is no remaining pointer to it.  We considered
inventing another list_copy variant that would list_free the second
input, but concluded that for most call sites it isn't worth worrying
about, given the relative compactness of the new List representation.
(Note that in cases where such leakage would happen, the old code
already leaked the second List's header; so we're only discussing
the size of the leak not whether there is one.  I did adjust two or
three places that had been troubling to free that header so that
they manually free the whole second List.)

Alvaro Herrera 4e85642d93 Apply constraint exclusion more generally in partitioning
We were applying constraint exclusion on the partition constraint when
generating pruning steps for a clause, but only for the rather
restricted situation of them being boolean OR operators; however it is
possible to have differently shaped clauses that also benefit from
constraint exclusion.  This applies particularly to the default
partition since their constraints are in essence a long list of OR'ed
subclauses ... but it applies to other cases too.  So in certain cases
we're scanning partitions that we don't need to.

Remove the specialized code in OR clauses, and add a generally
applicable test of the clause refuting the partition constraint; mark
the whole pruning operation as contradictory if it hits.

This has the unwanted side-effect of testing some (most? all?)
constraints more than once if constraint_exclusion=on.  That seems
unavoidable as far as I can tell without some additional work, but
that's not the recommended setting for that parameter anyway.
However, because this imposes additional processing cost for all
queries using partitioned tables, I decided not to backpatch this
change.

Alvaro Herrera 489247b0e6 Improve pruning of a default partition
When querying a partitioned table containing a default partition, we
were wrongly deciding to include it in the scan too early in the
process, failing to exclude it in some cases.  If we reinterpret the
PruneStepResult.scan_default flag slightly, we can do a better job at
detecting that it can be excluded.  The change is that we avoid setting
the flag for that pruning step unless the step absolutely requires the
default partition to be scanned (in contrast with the previous
arrangement, which was to set it unless the step was able to prune it).
So get_matching_partitions() must explicitly check the partition that
each returned bound value corresponds to in order to determine whether
the default one needs to be included, rather than relying on the flag
from the final step result.
