A PostgreSQL release tarball contains a number of prebuilt files, in
particular files produced by bison, flex, perl, and well as html and
man documentation. We have done this consistent with established
practice at the time to not require these tools for building from a
tarball. Some of these tools were hard to get, or get the right
version of, from time to time, and shipping the prebuilt output was a
convenience to users.
Now this has at least two problems:
One, we have to make the build system(s) work in two modes: Building
from a git checkout and building from a tarball. This is pretty
complicated, but it works so far for autoconf/make. It does not
currently work for meson; you can currently only build with meson from
a git checkout. Making meson builds work from a tarball seems very
difficult or impossible. One particular problem is that since meson
requires a separate build directory, we cannot make the build update
files like gram.h in the source tree. So if you were to build from a
tarball and update gram.y, you will have a gram.h in the source tree
and one in the build tree, but the way things work is that the
compiler will always use the one in the source tree. So you cannot,
for example, make any gram.y changes when building from a tarball.
This seems impossible to fix in a non-horrible way.
Second, there is increased interest nowadays in precisely tracking the
origin of software. We can reasonably track contributions into the
git tree, and users can reasonably track the path from a tarball to
packages and downloads and installs. But what happens between the git
tree and the tarball is obscure and in some cases non-reproducible.
The solution for both of these issues is to get rid of the step that
adds prebuilt files to the tarball. The tarball now only contains
what is in the git tree (*). Getting the additional build
dependencies is no longer a problem nowadays, and the complications to
keep these dual build modes working are significant. And of course we
want to get the meson build system working universally.
This commit removes the make distprep target altogether. The make
dist target continues to do its job, it just doesn't call distprep
anymore.
(*) - The tarball also contains the INSTALL file that is built at make
dist time, but not by distprep. This is unchanged for now.
The make maintainer-clean target, whose job it is to remove the
prebuilt files in addition to what make distclean does, is now just an
alias to make distprep. (In practice, it is probably obsolete given
that git clean is available.)
The following programs are now hard build requirements in configure
(they were already required by meson.build):
- bison
- flex
- perl

Various test suites use the "openssl" program as part of their setup.
There isn't a way to override which openssl program is to be used,
other than by fiddling with the path, perhaps. This has gotten
increasingly problematic because different versions of openssl have
different capabilities and do different things by default.
This patch checks for an openssl binary in configure and meson setup,
with appropriate ways to override it. This is similar to how "lz4"
and "zstd" are handled, for example. The meson build system actually
already did this, but the result was only used in some places. This
is now applied more uniformly.

This adds rudimentary coverage of the sslinfo extension into the SSL
test harness. The output is validated by comparing with pg_stat_ssl
to provide some level of test stability should the underlying certs
be slightly altered. A new cert is added to provide an extension to
test against.

Commit b4c4a00ea refactored the gist of the sslfiles target into a
separate makefile in order to override settings in Makefile.global.
The invocation of this this file didn't however include the absolute
path for VPATH builds, resulting in "make clean" failing. Fix by
providing the path to the new makefile.

The Makefile handling of certificate and keypairs used for TLS testing
had become quite difficult to work with. Adding a new cert without the
need to regenerate everything was too complicated. This patch refactors
the sslfiles make target such that adding a new certificate requires
only adding a .config file, adding it to the top of the Makefile, and
running make sslfiles.
Improvements:
- Interfile dependencies should be fixed, with the exception of the CRL
dirs.
- New certificates have serial numbers based on the current time,
reducing the chance of collision.
- The CA index state is created on demand and cleaned up automatically
at the end of the Make run.
- *.config files are now self-contained; one certificate needs one
config file instead of two.
- Duplication is reduced, and along with it some unneeded code (and
possible copy-paste errors).
- all configuration files underneath the conf/ directory.
The target is moved to its own makefile in order to avoid colliding
with global make settings.

Currently we only recognize the Common Name (CN) of a certificate's
subject to be matched against the user name. Thus certificates with
subjects '/OU=eng/CN=fred' and '/OU=sales/CN=fred' will have the same
connection rights. This patch provides an option to match the whole
Distinguished Name (DN) instead of just the CN. On any hba line using
client certificate identity, there is an option 'clientname' which can
have values of 'DN' or 'CN'. The default is 'CN', the current procedure.
The DN is matched against the RFC2253 formatted DN, which looks like
'CN=fred,OU=eng'.
This facility of probably best used in conjunction with an ident map.

Add another method to specify CRLs, hashed directory method, for both
server and client side. This offers a means for server or libpq to
load only CRLs that are required to verify a certificate. The CRL
directory is specifed by separate GUC variables or connection options
ssl_crl_dir and sslcrldir, alongside the existing ssl_crl_file and
sslcrl, so both methods can be used at the same time.

This is a replacement for the existing --with-openssl, extending the
logic to make easier the addition of new SSL libraries. The grammar is
chosen to be similar to --with-uuid, where multiple values can be
chosen, with "openssl" as the only supported value for now.
The original switch, --with-openssl, is kept for compatibility.

DES has been deprecated in OpenSSL 3.0.0 which makes loading keys
encrypted with DES fail with "fetch failed". Solve by changing the
cipher used to aes256 which has been supported since 1.0.1 (and is
more realistic to use anyways).
Note that the minimum supported OpenSSL version is 1.0.1 as of
7b283d0e1d, so this does not introduce
any new version requirements.

This patch providies for support for password protected SSL client
keys in libpq, and for DER format keys, both encrypted and unencrypted.
There is a new connection parameter sslpassword, which is supplied to
the OpenSSL libraries via a callback function. The callback function can
also be set by an application by calling PQgetSSLKeyPassHook(). There is
also a function to retreive the connection setting, PQsslpassword().

Debian testing and newer now require that RSA and DHE keys are at
least 2048 bit long and no longer allow SHA-1 for signatures in
certificates. This is currently causing the ssl tests to fail there
because the test certificates and keys have been created in violation
of those conditions.
Update the parameters to create the test files and create a new set of
test files.

This allows specifying an external command for prompting for or
otherwise obtaining passphrases for SSL key files. This is useful
because in many cases there is no TTY easily available during service
startup.
Also add a setting ssl_passphrase_command_supports_reload, which allows
supporting SSL configuration reload even if SSL files need passphrases.

Add checks in each test file that the build supports the feature,
otherwise skip all the tests. Before, if someone were to (accidentally)
invoke these tests without build support, they would fail in confusing
ways.

There were several issues with the old coding:
1. There was a race condition, if two threads opened a connection at the
same time. We used a mutex around SSL_CTX_* calls, but that was not
enough, e.g. if one thread SSL_CTX_load_verify_locations() with one
path, and another thread set it with a different path, before the first
thread got to establish the connection.
2. Opening two different connections, with different sslrootcert settings,
seemed to fail outright with "SSL error: block type is not 01". Not sure
why.
3. We created the SSL object, before calling SSL_CTX_load_verify_locations
and SSL_CTX_use_certificate_chain_file on the SSL context. That was
wrong, because the options set on the SSL context are propagated to the
SSL object, when the SSL object is created. If they are set after the
SSL object has already been created, they won't take effect until the
next connection. (This is bug #14329)
At least some of these could've been fixed while still using a shared
context, but it would've been more complicated and error-prone. To keep
things simple, let's just use a separate SSL context for each connection,
and accept the overhead.

Changes needed to build at all:
- Check for SSL_new in configure, now that SSL_library_init is a macro.
- Do not access struct members directly. This includes some new code in
pgcrypto, to use the resource owner mechanism to ensure that we don't
leak OpenSSL handles, now that we can't embed them in other structs
anymore.
- RAND_SSLeay() -> RAND_OpenSSL()
Changes that were needed to silence deprecation warnings, but were not
strictly necessary:
- RAND_pseudo_bytes() -> RAND_bytes().
- SSL_library_init() and OpenSSL_config() -> OPENSSL_init_ssl()
- ASN1_STRING_data() -> ASN1_STRING_get0_data()
- DH_generate_parameters() -> DH_generate_parameters()
- Locking callbacks are not needed with OpenSSL 1.1.0 anymore. (Good
riddance!)
Also change references to SSLEAY_VERSION_NUMBER with OPENSSL_VERSION_NUMBER,
for the sake of consistency. OPENSSL_VERSION_NUMBER has existed since time
immemorial.
Fix SSL test suite to work with OpenSSL 1.1.0. CA certificates must have
the "CA:true" basic constraint extension now, or OpenSSL will refuse them.
Regenerate the test certificates with that. The "openssl" binary, used to
generate the certificates, is also now more picky, and throws an error
if an X509 extension is specified in "req_extensions", but that section
is empty.
Backpatch to all supported branches, per popular demand. In back-branches,
we still support OpenSSL 0.9.7 and above. OpenSSL 0.9.6 should still work
too, but I didn't test it. In master, we only support 0.9.8 and above.

All the other certificates were created to be valid for 10000 days, because
we don't want to have to recreate them. But I missed the root CA cert, and
the pre-created certificates included in the repository expired in January.
Fix, and re-create all the certificates.
It's not run by the global "check" or "installcheck" targets, because the
temporary installation it creates accepts TCP connections from any user
the same host, which is insecure.
