189699dd36 Remove unimplemented/undocumented geometric functions & operators.
Nobody has filled in these stubs for upwards of twenty years,
so it's time to drop the idea that they might get implemented
any day now.  The associated pg_operator and pg_proc entries
are just confusing wastes of space.

c5c192d7bd Implement poly_distance().
geo_ops.c contains half a dozen functions that are just stubs throwing
ERRCODE_FEATURE_NOT_SUPPORTED.  Since it's been like that for more
than twenty years, there's clearly not a lot of interest in filling in
the stubs.  However, I'm uncomfortable with deleting poly_distance(),
since every other geometric type supports a distance-to-another-object-
of-the-same-type function.  We can easily add this capability by
cribbing from poly_overlap() and path_distance().

It's possible that the (existing) test case for this will show some
numeric instability, but hopefully the buildfarm will expose it if so.

In passing, improve the documentation to try to explain why polygons
are distinct from closed paths in the first place.

9fe649ea29 In geo_ops.c, represent infinite slope as Infinity, not DBL_MAX.
Since we're assuming IEEE floats these days, there seems little
reason not to do this.  It has the advantage that when the slope is
computed as infinite due to the presence of Inf coordinates, we get
saner behavior than before from line_construct(), and thence also
in some dependent operations such as finding the closest point.

Also fix line_construct() to special-case slope zero.  The previous
coding got the right answer in most cases, but it could compute
C as NaN when the point has Inf coordinates.

8597a48d01 Fix FPeq() and friends to get the right answers for infinities.
"FPeq(infinity, infinity)" returned false, on account of getting NaN
when it subtracts the two inputs.  Fix that by adding a separate
check for exact equality.

FPle() and FPge() similarly got the wrong answer for two like-signed
infinities.  In those cases, we can just rearrange the comparisons
to avoid potentially subtracting infinities.

While the sibling functions FPne() etc accidentally gave the right
answers even with the internal NaN results, it seems best to make
similar adjustments to them to avoid depending on this.

FPeq() has to be converted to an inline function to avoid double
evaluations of its arguments, and I did the same for the others
just for consistency.

In passing, make the handling of NaN cases in line_eq() and
point_eq_point() simpler and easier to reason about, and perhaps
faster.

This results in just one visible regression test change: slope()
now gives DBL_MAX for two inputs of (inf,1e300), which is consistent
with what it does for (1e300,inf), so that seems like a bug fix.

41a194f491 Fix circle_in to accept "(x,y),r" as it's advertised to do.
Our documentation describes four allowed input syntaxes for circles,
but the regression tests tried only three ... with predictable
consequences.  Remarkably, this has been wrong since the circle
datatype was added in 1997, but nobody noticed till now.

607f8ce74d Avoid a performance regression in float overflow/underflow detection.
Commit 6bf0bc842 replaced float.c's CHECKFLOATVAL() macro with static
inline subroutines, but that wasn't too well thought out.  In the original
coding, the unlikely condition (isinf(result) or result == 0) was checked
first, and the inf_is_valid or zero_is_valid condition only afterwards.
The inline-subroutine coding caused that to be swapped around, which is
pretty horrid for performance because (a) in common cases the is_valid
condition is twice as expensive to evaluate (e.g., requiring two isinf()
calls not one) and (b) in common cases the is_valid condition is false,
requiring us to perform the unlikely-condition check anyway.  Net result
is that one isinf() call becomes two or three, resulting in visible
performance loss as reported by Keisuke Kuroda.

The original fix proposal was to revert the replacement of the macro,
but on second thought, that macro was just a bad idea from the beginning:
if anything it's a net negative for readability of the code.  So instead,
let's just open-code all the overflow/underflow tests, being careful to
test the unlikely condition first (and mark it unlikely() to help the
compiler get the point).

Also, rather than having N copies of the actual ereport() calls, collapse
those into out-of-line error subroutines to save some code space.  This
does mean that the error file/line numbers won't be very helpful for
figuring out where the issue really is --- but we'd already burned that
bridge by putting the ereports into static inlines.

In HEAD, check_float[48]_val() are gone altogether.  In v12, leave them
present in float.h but unused in the core code, just in case some
extension is depending on them.

8255c7a5ee Phase 2 pgindent run for v12.
Switch to 2.1 version of pg_bsd_indent.  This formats
multiline function declarations "correctly", that is with
additional lines of parameter declarations indented to match
where the first line's left parenthesis is.

2e2a392de3 Fix problems in handling the line data type
According to the source history, the internal format of line data type
has changed, but various functions working with it did were not updated
and thus were producing wrong results.

This patch addresses various such issues, in particular:

* Reject invalid specification A=B=0 on receive
* Reject same points on line_construct_pp()
* Fix perpendicular operator when negative values are involved
* Avoid division by zero on perpendicular operator
* Fix intersection and distance operators when neither A nor B are 1
* Return NULL for closest point when objects are parallel
* Check whether closest point of line segments is the intersection point
* Fix closest point of line segments being on the wrong segment

Aside from handling those issues, the patch also aims to make operators
more symmetric and less sen to precision loss.  The EPSILON interferes
with even minor changes, but the least we can do is applying it to both
sides of the operators equally.

c4c3400885 Use the built-in float datatypes to implement geometric types
This patch makes the geometric operators and functions use the exported
function of the float4/float8 datatypes.  The main reason of doing so is
to check for underflow and overflow, and to handle NaNs consciously.

The float datatypes consider NaNs values to be equal and greater than
all non-NaN values.  This change considers NaNs equal only for equality
operators.  The placement operators, contains, overlaps, left/right of
etc. continue to return false when NaNs are involved.  We don't need
to worry about them being considered greater than any-NaN because there
aren't any basic comparison operators like less/greater than for the
geometric datatypes.

The changes may be summarised as:

* Check for underflow, overflow and division by zero
* Consider NaN values to be equal
* Return NULL when the distance is NaN for all closest point operators
* Favour not-NaN over NaN where it makes sense

The patch also replaces all occurrences of "double" as "float8".  They
are the same, but were used inconsistently in the same file.

ab87b8fedc Mark variable used only in assertion with PG_USED_FOR_ASSERTS_ONLY
Perpendicular lines always intersect, so the line_interpt_line() return
value in line_closept_point() was used only in an assertion, triggering
compiler warnings in non-assert builds.

74294c7301 Restore handling of -0 in the C field of lines in line_construct().
Commit a7dc63d904 inadvertedly removed this bit originally introduced
by 43fe90f66a, causing regression test failures on some platforms,
due to producing {1,-1,-0} instead of {1,-1,0}.

6bf0bc842b Provide separate header file for built-in float types
Some data types under adt/ have separate header files, but most simple
ones do not, and their public functions are defined in builtins.h.  As
the patches improving geometric types will require making additional
functions public, this seems like a good opportunity to create a header
for floats types.

Commit 1acf757255 made _cmp functions public to solve NaN issues locally
for GiST indexes.  This patch reworks it in favour of a more widely
applicable API.  The API uses inline functions, as they are easier to
use compared to macros, and avoid double-evaluation hazards.

a7dc63d904 Refactor geometric functions and operators
The primary goal of this patch is to eliminate duplicate code and share
code between different geometric data types more often, to prepare the
ground for additional patches.  Until now the code reuse was limited,
probably because the simpler types (line and point) were implemented
after the more complex ones.

The changes are quite extensive and can be summarised as:

* Eliminate SQL-level function calls.
* Re-use more functions to implement others.
* Unify internal function names and signatures.
* Remove private functions from geo_decls.h.
* Replace should-not-happen checks with assertions.
* Add comments describe for various functions.
* Remove some unreachable code.
* Define delimiter symbols of line datatype like the other ones.
* Remove the GEODEBUG macro and printf() calls.
* Unify code style of a few oddly formatted lines.

While the goal was to cause minimal user-visible changes, it was not
possible to keep the original behavior in all cases - for example when
handling NaN values, or when reusing code makes the functions return
consistent results.

ff963b393c Add polygon opclass for SP-GiST
Polygon opclass uses compress method feature of SP-GiST added earlier. For now
it's a single operator class which uses this feature. SP-GiST actually indexes
a bounding boxes of input polygons, so part of supported operations are lossy.
Opclass uses most methods of corresponding opclass over boxes of SP-GiST and
treats bounding boxes as point in 4D-space.

Bump catalog version.

2eb4a831e5 Change TRUE/FALSE to true/false
The lower case spellings are C and C++ standard and are used in most
parts of the PostgreSQL sources.  The upper case spellings are only used
in some files/modules.  So standardize on the standard spellings.

The APIs for ICU, Perl, and Windows define their own TRUE and FALSE, so
those are left as is when using those APIs.

In code comments, we use the lower-case spelling for the C concepts and
keep the upper-case spelling for the SQL concepts.

382ceffdf7 Phase 3 of pgindent updates.
Don't move parenthesized lines to the left, even if that means they
flow past the right margin.

By default, BSD indent lines up statement continuation lines that are
within parentheses so that they start just to the right of the preceding
left parenthesis.  However, traditionally, if that resulted in the
continuation line extending to the right of the desired right margin,
then indent would push it left just far enough to not overrun the margin,
if it could do so without making the continuation line start to the left of
the current statement indent.  That makes for a weird mix of indentations
unless one has been completely rigid about never violating the 80-column
limit.

This behavior has been pretty universally panned by Postgres developers.
Hence, disable it with indent's new -lpl switch, so that parenthesized
lines are always lined up with the preceding left paren.

This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent
changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects.

c7b8998ebb Phase 2 of pgindent updates.
Change pg_bsd_indent to follow upstream rules for placement of comments
to the right of code, and remove pgindent hack that caused comments
following #endif to not obey the general rule.

Commit e3860ffa4d wasn't actually using
the published version of pg_bsd_indent, but a hacked-up version that
tried to minimize the amount of movement of comments to the right of
code.  The situation of interest is where such a comment has to be
moved to the right of its default placement at column 33 because there's
code there.  BSD indent has always moved right in units of tab stops
in such cases --- but in the previous incarnation, indent was working
in 8-space tab stops, while now it knows we use 4-space tabs.  So the
net result is that in about half the cases, such comments are placed
one tab stop left of before.  This is better all around: it leaves
more room on the line for comment text, and it means that in such
cases the comment uniformly starts at the next 4-space tab stop after
the code, rather than sometimes one and sometimes two tabs after.

Also, ensure that comments following #endif are indented the same
as comments following other preprocessor commands such as #else.
That inconsistency turns out to have been self-inflicted damage
from a poorly-thought-through post-indent "fixup" in pgindent.

This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent
changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects.

e3860ffa4d Initial pgindent run with pg_bsd_indent version 2.0.
The new indent version includes numerous fixes thanks to Piotr Stefaniak.
The main changes visible in this commit are:

* Nicer formatting of function-pointer declarations.
* No longer unexpectedly removes spaces in expressions using casts,
  sizeof, or offsetof.
* No longer wants to add a space in "struct structname *varname", as
  well as some similar cases for const- or volatile-qualified pointers.
* Declarations using PG_USED_FOR_ASSERTS_ONLY are formatted more nicely.
* Fixes bug where comments following declarations were sometimes placed
  with no space separating them from the code.
* Fixes some odd decisions for comments following case labels.
* Fixes some cases where comments following code were indented to less
  than the expected column 33.

On the less good side, it now tends to put more whitespace around typedef
names that are not listed in typedefs.list.  This might encourage us to
put more effort into typedef name collection; it's not really a bug in
indent itself.

There are more changes coming after this round, having to do with comment
indentation and alignment of lines appearing within parentheses.  I wanted
to limit the size of the diffs to something that could be reviewed without
one's eyes completely glazing over, so it seemed better to split up the
changes as much as practical.

278148907a Fix crash in close_ps() for NaN input coordinates.
The Assert() here seems unreasonably optimistic.  Andreas Seltenreich
found that it could fail with NaNs in the input geometries, and it
seems likely to me that it might fail in corner cases due to roundoff
error, even for ordinary input values.  As a band-aid, make the function
return SQL NULL instead of crashing.

50861cd683 Improve portability of I/O behavior for the geometric types.
Formerly, the geometric I/O routines such as box_in and point_out relied
directly on strtod() and sprintf() for conversion of the float8 component
values of their data types.  However, the behavior of those functions is
pretty platform-dependent, especially for edge-case values such as
infinities and NaNs.  This was exposed by commit acdf2a8b37, which
added test cases involving boxes with infinity endpoints, and immediately
failed on Windows and AIX buildfarm members.  We solved these problems
years ago in the main float8in and float8out functions, so let's fix it
by making the geometric types use that code instead of depending directly
on the platform-supplied functions.

To do this, refactor the float8in code so that it can be used to parse
just part of a string, and as a convenience make the guts of float8out
usable without going through DirectFunctionCall.

While at it, get rid of geo_ops.c's fairly shaky assumptions about the
maximum output string length for a double, by having it build results in
StringInfo buffers instead of fixed-length strings.

In passing, convert all the "invalid input syntax for type foo" messages
in this area of the code into "invalid input syntax for type %s" to reduce
the number of distinct translatable strings, per recent discussion.
We would have needed a fair number of the latter anyway for code-sharing
reasons, so we might as well just go whole hog.

Note: this patch is by no means intended to guarantee that the geometric
types uniformly behave sanely for infinity or NaN component values.
But any bugs we have in that line were there all along, they were just
harder to reach in a platform-independent way.

0d8f3d5d11 Add missing CHECK_FOR_INTERRUPTS in lseg_inside_poly
Apparently, there are bugs in this code that cause it to loop endlessly.
That bug still needs more research, but in the meantime it's clear that
the loop is missing a check for interrupts so that it can be cancelled
timely.

Backpatch to 9.1 -- this has been missing since 49475aab8d.

35fcb1b3d0 Allow GiST distance function to return merely a lower-bound.
The distance function can now set *recheck = false, like index quals. The
executor will then re-check the ORDER BY expressions, and use a queue to
reorder the results on the fly.

This makes it possible to do kNN-searches on polygons and circles, which
don't store the exact value in the index, but just a bounding box.

3b6db1f445 Add geometry/range functions to support BRIN inclusion
This commit adds the following functions:
    box(point) -> box
    bound_box(box, box) -> box
    inet_same_family(inet, inet) -> bool
    inet_merge(inet, inet) -> cidr
    range_merge(anyrange, anyrange) -> anyrange

The first of these is also used to implement a new assignment cast from
point to box.

These functions are the first part of a base to implement an "inclusion"
operator class for BRIN, for multidimensional data types.

09d8d110a6 Use FLEXIBLE_ARRAY_MEMBER in a bunch more places.
Replace some bogus "x[1]" declarations with "x[FLEXIBLE_ARRAY_MEMBER]".
Aside from being more self-documenting, this should help prevent bogus
warnings from static code analyzers and perhaps compiler misoptimizations.

This patch is just a down payment on eliminating the whole problem, but
it gets rid of a lot of easy-to-fix cases.

Note that the main problem with doing this is that one must no longer rely
on computing sizeof(the containing struct), since the result would be
compiler-dependent.  Instead use offsetof(struct, lastfield).  Autoconf
also warns against spelling that offsetof(struct, lastfield[0]).

cec916f35b Remove unused "m" field in LSEG.
This field has been unreferenced since 1998, and does not appear in lseg
values stored on disk (since sizeof(lseg) is only 32 bytes according to
pg_type).  There was apparently some idea of maintaining it just in values
appearing in memory, but the bookkeeping required to make that work would
surely far outweigh the cost of recalculating the line's slope when needed.
Remove it to (a) simplify matters and (b) suppress some uninitialized-field
whining from Coverity.

778d498c7d Fix breakage in GEODEBUG debug code.
LINE doesn't have an "m" field (anymore anyway).  Also fix unportable
assumption that %x can print the result of pointer subtraction.

In passing, improve single_decode() in minor ways:
* Remove unnecessary leading-whitespace skip (strtod does that already).
* Make GEODEBUG message more intelligible.

31400a6733 Predict integer overflow to avoid buffer overruns.
Several functions, mostly type input functions, calculated an allocation
size such that the calculation wrapped to a small positive value when
arguments implied a sufficiently-large requirement.  Writes past the end
of the inadvertent small allocation followed shortly thereafter.
Coverity identified the path_in() vulnerability; code inspection led to
the rest.  In passing, add check_stack_depth() to prevent stack overflow
in related functions.

Back-patch to 8.4 (all supported versions).  The non-comment hstore
changes touch code that did not exist in 8.4, so that part stops at 9.0.

43fe90f66a Suppress -0 in the C field of lines computed by line_construct_pts().
It's not entirely clear why some PPC machines are generating -0 here, since
the underlying computation should be exactly 0 - 0.  Perhaps there's some
wider-than-nominal-precision calculations happening?  Anyway, the best way
to avoid platform-dependent results seems to be to explicitly reset -0 to
regular zero.

261c7d4b65 Revive line type
Change the input/output format to {A,B,C}, to match the internal
representation.

Complete the implementations of line_in, line_out, line_recv, line_send.
Remove comments and error messages about the line type not being
implemented.  Add regression tests for existing line operators and
functions.
