Also performed an initial run through of upgrading our Copyright date to
extend to 2005 ... first run here was very simple ... change everything
where: grep 1996-2004 && the word 'Copyright' ... scanned through the
generated list with 'less' first, and after, to make sure that I only
picked up the right entries ...

To those who are really interested, and there are a few of you: the attached
patch + file will allow the source base to be compiled (and, for some
definition, "run") under MingW, with the following caveats (I wanted to

for a patch :-):
* child death: SIGCHLD not yet sent, so as a minimum, you'll need to
put in some sort of delay after StartupDatabase, and handle setting
StartupPID to 0 etc (ie. the stuff the reaper() signal function is supposed
to do)
* dirmod.c: comment out the elog calls
* dfmgr.c: some hackage required to substitute_libpath_macro
* slru/xact.c: comment out the errno checking after the readdir
(fixed by next version of MingW)
Again, this is only if you *really* want to see postgres compile and start,
and is a nice leg-up for working on the other Win32 TODO list items. Just
don't expect too much else from it at this point...

GUC support. It's now possible to set datestyle, timezone, and
client_encoding from postgresql.conf and per-database or per-user
settings. Also, implement rollback of SET commands that occur in a
transaction that later fails. Create a SET LOCAL var = value syntax
that sets the variable only for the duration of the current transaction.
All per previous discussions in pghackers.
environment strings need to be moved around, do so when called from
initial startup (main.c), not in init_ps_status. This eliminates the
former risk of invalidating saved environment-string pointers, since
no code has yet had a chance to grab any such pointers when main.c
is running.
per suggestion from Peter. Simplify several APIs by transmitting the
original argv location directly from main.c to ps_status.c, instead of
passing it down through several levels of subroutines.
Use --enable-nls to turn it on; see installation instructions for details.

psql sources have been almost fully prepared and an incomplete German
translation has been provided. In the backend, only elog() calls are
currently translatable, and the provided German translation file is more
of a placeholder.
to the use of getpwuid when running in standalone mode.
this patch allocates some persistent storage (using
strdup) to store the username obtained with getpwuid
in src/backend/main/main.c. this is necessary because
later on, getpwuid is called again (in ValidateBinary).

in particular, on my platform, the storage used to hold
the pw_name from the first call is overwritten such that
it looks like an empty username. this causes a problem
later on in SetSessionUserIdFromUserName.
i'd assume this isn't a problem on most platforms because
getpwuid is called with the same UID both times, and the
same thing ends up happening to that static storage each
time. however, that's not guaranteed, and is _not_ what
happens on my platform (at least :).

user is now defined in terms of the user id, the user name is only computed
upon request (for display purposes). This is kind of the opposite of the
previous state, which would maintain the user name and compute the user id
for permission checks.
Besides perhaps saving a few cycles (integer vs string), this now creates a
single point of attack for changing the user id during a connection, for
purposes of "setuid" functions, etc.
Ok, I have finally gotten all of the defines for Dec/Alpha and
Linux/Alpha sorted out as Marc asked. There is no longer any need for
'-Dalpha' or '-Dlinuxalpha' in either the Dec/Alpha or the Linux/Alpha
template files (./src/template/{alpha,linuxalpha}). I have replaced every
instance of 'alpha' or '__alpha__' with '__alpha', as that appears to be
the common symbol between C compilers on both operating systems (RH4.2 &
DecUnix 4.0b) for alpha.
Attached you'll find a (big) patch that fixes make dep and make
depend in all Makefiles where I found it to be appropriate.
It also removes the dependency in Makefile.global for NAMEDATALEN
and OIDNAMELEN by making backend/catalog/genbki.sh and bin/initdb/initdb.sh
a little smarter.
This no longer requires initdb.sh that is turned into initdb with
a sed script when installing Postgres, hence initdb.sh should be
renamed to initdb (after the patch has been applied :-) )
This patch is against the 6.3 sources, as it took a while to
complete.

that's suddenly being used.
The #define ASSEMBLER is to prevent most of the code of sys/proc.h
from being included, as it ends up conflicting with some of the
postgresql definitions. This may or may not work on other versions
of Digital Unix.

One of the patches is a bug fix, but I'm including it here anyway.
With these patches applied, the beast seems to work properly. However,

I changed the data type to be pass-by-reference rather than by-value

the other Postgres source code files (4 space indent, 8 spaces == 1 tab).
The locale stuff should be tested under another convention (Russian?)
but I don't know what the correct results should be so perhaps someone
else can give them a try. Will update docs and regression tests in
the next few days.

here are little patches to get Postgres 6.1 works with locale stuff.
This is a patch against 970402.tar.gz, there are no problem to apply them
by hand to 6.0 release. Collate stuff tested about 1-2 months in real
working database but I'm sure there must be no problem. US hackers
could vote against locale implementation ( locale for sure will affect to
speed of postgres ), so I introduce variable USE_LOCALE which
controls locale stuff. Non-US users now could use ~* operator
for searching and <order by> for strings with nation alphabet.
Please, don't forget, as I did first time, to set environment variable
LC_CTYPE and LC_COLLATE because backend get locale information from them.
I start postmaster from a little script, assuming that shell is Bash shell
it looks like:
