Michael Paquier 2c8118ee5d Use printf's %m format instead of strerror(errno) in more places
Most callers of strerror() are removed from the backend code.  The
remaining callers require special handling with a saved errno from a
previous system call.  The frontend code still needs strerror() where
error states need to be handled outside of fprintf.

Note that pg_regress is not changed to use %m as the TAP output may
clobber errno, since those functions call fprintf() and friends before
evaluating the format string.

Support for %m in src/port/snprintf.c has been added in d6c55de1f9,
hence all the stable branches currently supported include it.

Tom Lane c1aa3b3c0d Update our mapping of Windows time zone names some more.
Per discussion, let's just follow CLDR's default zone mappings
faithfully.  There are two changes here that are clear improvements:

* Mapping "Greenwich Standard Time" to Atlantic/Reykjavik is actually
a better fit than using London, because Iceland hasn't observed DST
since 1968, so this is more nearly what people might expect.

* Since the "Samoa" zone is specified to be UTC+13:00, we must map
it to Pacific/Apia not Pacific/Samoa; the latter refers to American
Samoa which is now on the other side of the date line.

The rest of these changes look like they're choosing the most populous
IANA zone as representative.  Whatever the details, we're just going
to say "if you don't like this mapping, complain to CLDR".

Tom Lane 9b8d68cc65 Update our mapping of Windows time zone names using CLDR info.
This corrects a bunch of entries in win32_tzmap[], and adds a few
new ones, based on the CLDR project's windowsZones.xml file.
Non-cosmetic changes fall into four main categories:

* Flat-out errors:

US/Aleutan doesn't exist
America/Salvador doesn't exist
Asia/Baku is wrong for Yerevan
Asia/Dhaka (Bangladesh) is wrong for Astana (Kazakhstan)
Europe/Bucharest is wrong for Chisinau
America/Mexico_City is wrong for Chetumal
America/Buenos_Aires is wrong for Cayenne
America/Caracas has its own zone, so poor fit for La Paz
US/Eastern is wrong for Haiti
US/Eastern is wrong for Indiana (East)
Asia/Karachi is wrong for Tashkent
Etc/UTC+12 doesn't exist
Signs of Etc/GMT zones were backwards

* Judgment calls:

(These changes follow CLDR's choices, except for the first one)

Use Europe/London for "Greenwich Standard Time", since that seems much
more likely than Africa/Casablanca to be what people will think that
zone name means.  CLDR has Atlantic/Reykjavik here, but that's no better.

Asia/Shanghai seems a better fit than Hong Kong for "China Standard
Time".

Europe/Sarajevo is now a link to Belgrade, ie "Central Europe Standard
Time"; so use Warsaw for "Central European Standard Time".

America/Sao_Paulo seems more representative than Araguaina for
"E. South America Standard Time".

Africa/Johannesburg seems more representative than Harare for
"South Africa Standard Time".

* New Windows zone names:

"Israel Standard Time"
"Kaliningrad Standard Time"
"Russia Time Zone N" for various N
"Singapore Standard Time"
"South Sudan Standard Time"
"W. Central Africa Standard Time"
"West Bank Standard Time"
"Yukon Standard Time"

Some of these replace older spellings, but I kept the older spellings
too in case our code runs on a machine with the older data.

* Replace aliases (tzdb Links) with underlying city-named zones:

(This tracks tzdb's longstanding practice, and reduces inconsistency
with the rest of the entries, as well as with CLDR.)

US/Alaska
Asia/Kuwait
Asia/Muscat
Canada/Atlantic
Australia/Canberra
Canada/Saskatchewan
US/Central
US/Eastern
US/Hawaii
US/Mountain
Canada/Newfoundland
US/Pacific

Back-patch to all supported branches, as is our usual practice for

Tom Lane ad740067ae Re-alphabetize the win32_tzmap[] array.
The original intent seems to have been to sort case-insensitively
by the Windows zone name, but various changes over the years did
not get that memo.  This commit just moves a few entries to
restore exact alphabetic order, to ease comparison to the outputs
of processing scripts.

Back-patch to all supported branches, as is our usual practice for
time zone data updates.

Tom Lane f807e3410f Work around portability issue with newer versions of mktime().
Recent glibc versions have made mktime() fail if tm_isdst is
inconsistent with the prevailing timezone; in particular it fails for
tm_isdst = 1 when the zone is UTC.  (This seems wildly inconsistent
with the POSIX-mandated treatment of "incorrect" values for the other
fields of struct tm, so if you ask me it's a bug, but I bet they'll
say it's intentional.)  This has been observed to cause cosmetic
problems when pg_restore'ing an archive created in a different
timezone.

To fix, do mktime() using the field values from the archive, and if
that fails try again with tm_isdst = -1.  This will give a result
that's off by the UTC-offset difference from the original zone, but
that was true before, too.  It's not terribly critical since we don't
do anything with the result except possibly print it.  (Someday we
should flush this entire bit of logic and record a standard-format
timestamp in the archive instead.  That's not okay for a back-patched
bug fix, though.)

Also, guard our only other use of mktime() by having initdb's
build_time_t() set tm_isdst = -1 not 0.  This case could only have
an issue in zones that are DST year-round; but I think some do exist,
or could in future.

Per report from Wells Oliver.  Back-patch to all supported
versions, since any of them might need to run with a newer glibc.

Tom Lane bd8c5cee96 Improve placement of "display name" comment in win32_tzmap[] entries.
Sticking this comment at the end of the last line was a bad idea: it's
not particularly readable, and it tempts pgindent to mess with line
breaks within the comment, which in turn reveals that win32tzlist.pl's
clean_displayname() does the wrong thing to clean up such line breaks.
While that's not hard to fix, there's basically no excuse for this
arrangement to begin with, especially since it makes the table layout
needlessly vary across back branches with different pgindent rules.
Let's just put the comment inside the braces, instead.

This commit just moves and reformats the comments, and updates
win32tzlist.pl to match; there's no actual data change.

Per odd-looking results from Juan José Santamaría Flecha.
Back-patch, since the point is to make win32_tzmap[] look the
same in all supported branches again.

Tom Lane 3754113f33 Avoid choosing "localtime" or "posixrules" as TimeZone during initdb.
Some platforms create a file named "localtime" in the system
timezone directory, making it a copy or link to the active time
zone file.  If Postgres is built with --with-system-tzdata, initdb
will see that file as an exact match to localtime(3)'s behavior,
and it may decide that "localtime" is the most preferred spelling of
the active zone.  That's a very bad choice though, because it's
neither informative, nor portable, nor stable if someone changes
the system timezone setting.  Extend the preference logic added by
commit e3846a00c so that we will prefer any other zone file that
matches localtime's behavior over "localtime".

On the same logic, also discriminate against "posixrules", which
is another not-really-a-zone file that is often present in the
timezone directory.  (Since we install "posixrules" but not
"localtime", this change can affect the behavior of Postgres
with or without --with-system-tzdata.)

Note that this change doesn't prevent anyone from choosing these
pseudo-zones if they really want to (i.e., by setting TZ for initdb,
or modifying the timezone GUC later on).  It just prevents initdb
from preferring these zone names when there are multiple matches to
localtime's behavior.

Since we generally prefer to keep timezone-related behavior the
same in all branches, and since this is arguably a bug fix,
back-patch to all supported branches.

Andrew Gierth e3846a00c2 Prefer timezone name "UTC" over alternative spellings.
tzdb 2019a made "UCT" a link to the "UTC" zone rather than a separate
zone with its own abbreviation. Unfortunately, our code for choosing a
timezone in initdb has an arbitrary preference for names earlier in
the alphabet, and so it would choose the spelling "UCT" over "UTC"
when the system is running on a UTC zone.

Commit 23bd3cec6 was backpatched in order to address this issue, but
that code helps only when /etc/localtime exists as a symlink, and does
nothing to help on systems where /etc/localtime is a copy of a zone
file (as is the standard setup on FreeBSD and probably some other
platforms too) or when /etc/localtime is simply absent (giving UTC as
the default).

Accordingly, add a preference for the spelling "UTC", such that if
multiple zone names have equally good content matches, we prefer that
name before applying the existing arbitrary rules. Also add a slightly
lower preference for "Etc/UTC"; lower because that preserves the
previous behaviour of choosing the shorter name, but letting us still
choose "Etc/UTC" over "Etc/UCT" when both exist but "UTC" does
not (not common, but I've seen it happen).

Backpatch all the way, because the tzdb change that sparked this issue
is in those branches too.

Tom Lane 8255c7a5ee Phase 2 pgindent run for v12.
Switch to 2.1 version of pg_bsd_indent.  This formats
multiline function declarations "correctly", that is with
additional lines of parameter declarations indented to match
where the first line's left parenthesis is.

Tom Lane 23bd3cec6e Attempt to identify system timezone by reading /etc/localtime symlink.
On many modern platforms, /etc/localtime is a symlink to a file within the
IANA database.  Reading the symlink lets us find out the name of the system
timezone directly, without going through the brute-force search embodied in
scan_available_timezones().  This shortens the runtime of initdb by some
tens of ms, which is helpful for the buildfarm, and it also allows us to
reliably select the same zone name the system was actually configured for,
rather than possibly choosing one of IANA's many zone aliases.  (For
example, in a system configured for "Asia/Tokyo", the brute-force search
would not choose that name but its alias "Japan", on the grounds of the
latter string being shorter.  More surprisingly, "Navajo" is preferred
to either "America/Denver" or "US/Mountain", as seen in an old complaint
from Josh Berkus.)

If /etc/localtime doesn't exist, or isn't a symlink, or we can't make
sense of its contents, or the contents match a zone we know but that
zone doesn't match the observed behavior of localtime(), fall back to
the brute-force search.

Also, tweak initdb so that it prints the zone name it selected.

In passing, replace the last few references to the "Olson" database in
code comments with "IANA", as that's been our preferred term since
commit b2cbced9e.

Tom Lane 382ceffdf7 Phase 3 of pgindent updates.
Don't move parenthesized lines to the left, even if that means they
flow past the right margin.

By default, BSD indent lines up statement continuation lines that are
within parentheses so that they start just to the right of the preceding
left parenthesis.  However, traditionally, if that resulted in the
continuation line extending to the right of the desired right margin,
then indent would push it left just far enough to not overrun the margin,
if it could do so without making the continuation line start to the left of
the current statement indent.  That makes for a weird mix of indentations
unless one has been completely rigid about never violating the 80-column
limit.

This behavior has been pretty universally panned by Postgres developers.
Hence, disable it with indent's new -lpl switch, so that parenthesized
lines are always lined up with the preceding left paren.

This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent
changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects.

Tom Lane c7b8998ebb Phase 2 of pgindent updates.
Change pg_bsd_indent to follow upstream rules for placement of comments
to the right of code, and remove pgindent hack that caused comments
following #endif to not obey the general rule.

Commit e3860ffa4d wasn't actually using
the published version of pg_bsd_indent, but a hacked-up version that
tried to minimize the amount of movement of comments to the right of
code.  The situation of interest is where such a comment has to be
moved to the right of its default placement at column 33 because there's
code there.  BSD indent has always moved right in units of tab stops
in such cases --- but in the previous incarnation, indent was working
in 8-space tab stops, while now it knows we use 4-space tabs.  So the
net result is that in about half the cases, such comments are placed
one tab stop left of before.  This is better all around: it leaves
more room on the line for comment text, and it means that in such
cases the comment uniformly starts at the next 4-space tab stop after
the code, rather than sometimes one and sometimes two tabs after.

Also, ensure that comments following #endif are indented the same
as comments following other preprocessor commands such as #else.
That inconsistency turns out to have been self-inflicted damage
from a poorly-thought-through post-indent "fixup" in pgindent.

This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent
changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects.

Tom Lane e3860ffa4d Initial pgindent run with pg_bsd_indent version 2.0.
The new indent version includes numerous fixes thanks to Piotr Stefaniak.
The main changes visible in this commit are:

* Nicer formatting of function-pointer declarations.
* No longer unexpectedly removes spaces in expressions using casts,
  sizeof, or offsetof.
* No longer wants to add a space in "struct structname *varname", as
  well as some similar cases for const- or volatile-qualified pointers.
* Declarations using PG_USED_FOR_ASSERTS_ONLY are formatted more nicely.
* Fixes bug where comments following declarations were sometimes placed
  with no space separating them from the code.
* Fixes some odd decisions for comments following case labels.
* Fixes some cases where comments following code were indented to less
  than the expected column 33.

On the less good side, it now tends to put more whitespace around typedef
names that are not listed in typedefs.list.  This might encourage us to
put more effort into typedef name collection; it's not really a bug in
indent itself.

There are more changes coming after this round, having to do with comment
indentation and alignment of lines appearing within parentheses.  I wanted
to limit the size of the diffs to something that could be reviewed without
one's eyes completely glazing over, so it seemed better to split up the
changes as much as practical.

Magnus Hagander a79a685622 Update Windows timezone mapping from Windows 7 and 10
This adds a couple of new timezones that are present in the newer
versions of Windows. It also updates comments to reference UTC rather
than GMT, as this change has been made in Windows.

Tom Lane 1f4e9da624 Sync tzload() and tzparse() APIs with IANA release tzcode2016c.
This brings us a bit closer to matching upstream, but since it affects
files outside src/timezone/, we might choose not to back-patch it.
Hence keep it separate from the main update patch.

Tom Lane 01824385ae Prevent potential overruns of fixed-size buffers.
Coverity identified a number of places in which it couldn't prove that a
string being copied into a fixed-size buffer would fit.  We believe that
most, perhaps all of these are in fact safe, or are copying data that is
coming from a trusted source so that any overrun is not really a security
issue.  Nonetheless it seems prudent to forestall any risk by using
strlcpy() and similar functions.

Fixes by Peter Eisentraut and Jozef Mlich based on Coverity reports.

In addition, fix a potential null-pointer-dereference crash in
contrib/chkpass.  The crypt(3) function is defined to return NULL on
failure, but chkpass.c didn't check for that before using the result.
The main practical case in which this could be an issue is if libc is
configured to refuse to execute unapproved hashing algorithms (e.g.,
"FIPS mode").  This ideally should've been a separate commit, but
since it touches code adjacent to one of the buffer overrun changes,
I included it in this commit to avoid last-minute merge issues.
This issue was reported by Honza Horak.

Tom Lane 4c5d837e69 Fix our mapping of Windows timezones for Central America.
We were mapping "Central America Standard Time" to "CST6CDT", which seems
entirely wrong, because according to the Olson timezone database noplace
in Central America observes daylight savings time on any regular basis ---
and certainly not according to the USA DST rules that are implied by
"CST6CDT".  (Mexico is an exception, but they can be disregarded since
they have a separate timezone name in Windows.)  So, map this zone name to
plain "CST6", which will provide a fixed UTC offset.

As written, this patch will also result in mapping "Central America
Daylight Time" to CST6.  I considered hacking things so that would still
map to CST6CDT, but it seems it would confuse win32tzlist.pl to put those
two names in separate entries.  Since there's little evidence that any
such zone name is used in the wild, much less that CST6CDT would be a good
match for it, I'm not too worried about what we do with it.

Tom Lane ca4af308c3 Simplify handling of the timezone GUC by making initdb choose the default.
We were doing some amazingly complicated things in order to avoid running
the very expensive identify_system_timezone() procedure during GUC
initialization.  But there is an obvious fix for that, which is to do it
once during initdb and have initdb install the system-specific default into
postgresql.conf, as it already does for most other GUC variables that need
system-environment-dependent defaults.  This means that the timezone (and
log_timezone) settings no longer have any magic behavior in the server.
