Tom Lane cde35cf4ae Fix eclass_useful_for_merging to give valid results for appendrel children.
Formerly, this function would always return "true" for an appendrel child
relation, because it would think that the appendrel parent was a potential
join target for the child.  In principle that should only lead to some
inefficiency in planning, but fuzz testing by Andreas Seltenreich disclosed
that it could lead to "could not find pathkey item to sort" planner errors
in odd corner cases.  Specifically, we would think that all columns of a
child table's multicolumn index were interesting pathkeys, causing us to
generate a MergeAppend path that sorts by all the columns.  However, if any
of those columns weren't actually used above the level of the appendrel,
they would not get added to that rel's targetlist, which would result in
being unable to resolve the MergeAppend's sort keys against its targetlist
during createplan.c.

Backpatch to 9.3.  In older versions, columns of an appendrel get added
to its targetlist even if they're not mentioned above the scan level,
so that the failure doesn't occur.  It might be worth back-patching this
fix to older versions anyway, but I'll refrain for the moment.

Tom Lane c03ad5602f Fix inherited UPDATE/DELETE with UNION ALL subqueries.
Fix an oversight in commit b3aaf9081a1a95c245fd605dcf02c91b3a5c3a29: we do
indeed need to process the planner's append_rel_list when copying RTE
subqueries, because if any of them were flattenable UNION ALL subqueries,
the append_rel_list shows which subquery RTEs were pulled up out of which
other ones.  Without this, UNION ALL subqueries aren't correctly inserted
into the update plans for inheritance child tables after the first one,
typically resulting in no update happening for those child table(s).

Experimentation with this case also exposed a fault in commit
a7b965382cf0cb30aeacb112572718045e6d4be7: if an inherited UPDATE/DELETE
was proven totally dummy by constraint exclusion, we might arrive at
add_rtes_to_flat_rtable with root->simple_rel_array being NULL.  This
should be interpreted as not having any RelOptInfos.  I chose to code
the guard as a check against simple_rel_array_size, so as to also
provide some protection against indexing off the end of the array.

Back-patch to 9.2 where the faulty code was added.

Tom Lane 5e900bc00f Fix generation of MergeAppend plans for optimized min/max on expressions.
Before jamming a desired targetlist into a plan node, one really ought to
make sure the plan node can handle projections, and insert a buffering
Result plan node if not.  planagg.c forgot to do this, which is a hangover
from the days when it only dealt with IndexScan plan types.  MergeAppend
doesn't project though, not to mention that it gets unhappy if you remove
its possibly-resjunk sort columns.  The code accidentally failed to fail
for cases in which the min/max argument was a simple Var, because the new
targetlist would be equivalent to the original "flat" tlist anyway.
For any more complex case, it's been broken since 9.1 where we introduced
the ability to optimize min/max using MergeAppend, as reported by Raphael
Bauduin.  Fix by duplicating the logic from grouping_planner that decides
whether we need a Result node.

In 9.2 and 9.1, this requires back-porting the tlist_same_exprs() function
introduced in commit 4387cf956b, else we'd
uselessly add a Result node in cases that worked before.  It's rather
tempting to back-patch that whole commit so that we can avoid extra Result
nodes in mainline cases too; but I'll refrain, since that code hasn't
really seen all that much field testing yet.

Alvaro Herrera d7b47e5155 Change syntax of new CHECK NO INHERIT constraints
The initially implemented syntax, "CHECK NO INHERIT (expr)" was not
deemed very good, so switch to "CHECK (expr) NO INHERIT" instead.  This
way it looks similar to SQL-standards compliant constraint attribute.

Backport to 9.2 where the new syntax and feature was introduced.

Tom Lane b71258af56 Fix name collision between concurrent regression tests.
Commit f5bcd398ad introduced a test using
a table named "circles" in inherit.sql.  Unfortunately, the concurrently
executed constraints test was already using that table name, so the
parallel regression tests would sometimes fail.  Rename table to dodge
the problem.  Per buildfarm.

Alvaro Herrera f5bcd398ad connoinherit may be true only for CHECK constraints
The code was setting it true for other constraints, which is
bogus.  Doing so caused bogus catalog entries for such constraints, and
in particular caused an error to be raised when trying to drop a
constraint of types other than CHECK from a table that has children,
such as reported in bug #6712.

In 9.2, additionally ignore connoinherit=true for other constraint
types, to avoid having to force initdb; existing databases might already
contain bogus catalog entries.

Includes a catversion bump (in HEAD only).

Alvaro Herrera 09ff76fcdb Recast "ONLY" column CHECK constraints as NO INHERIT
The original syntax wasn't universally loved, and it didn't allow its
usage in CREATE TABLE, only ALTER TABLE.  It now works everywhere, and
it also allows using ALTER TABLE ONLY to add an uninherited CHECK
constraint, per discussion.

The pg_constraint column has accordingly been renamed connoinherit.

This commit partly reverts some of the changes in
61d81bd28d, particularly some pg_dump and
psql bits, because now pg_get_constraintdef includes the necessary NO
INHERIT within the constraint definition.

Tom Lane 5b7b5518d0 Revise parameterized-path mechanism to fix assorted issues.
This patch adjusts the treatment of parameterized paths so that all paths
with the same parameterization (same set of required outer rels) for the
same relation will have the same rowcount estimate.  We cache the rowcount
estimates to ensure that property, and hopefully save a few cycles too.
Doing this makes it practical for add_path_precheck to operate without
a rowcount estimate: it need only assume that paths with different
parameterizations never dominate each other, which is close enough to
true anyway for coarse filtering, because normally a more-parameterized
path should yield fewer rows thanks to having more join clauses to apply.

In add_path, we do the full nine yards of comparing rowcount estimates
along with everything else, so that we can discard parameterized paths that
don't actually have an advantage.  This fixes some issues I'd found with
add_path rejecting parameterized paths on the grounds that they were more
expensive than not-parameterized ones, even though they yielded many fewer
rows and hence would be cheaper once subsequent joining was considered.

To make the same-rowcounts assumption valid, we have to require that any
parameterized path enforce *all* join clauses that could be obtained from
the particular set of outer rels, even if not all of them are useful for
indexing.  This is required at both base scans and joins.  It's a good
thing anyway since the net impact is that join quals are checked at the
lowest practical level in the join tree.  Hence, discard the original
rather ad-hoc mechanism for choosing parameterization joinquals, and build
a better one that has a more principled rule for when clauses can be moved.
The original rule was actually buggy anyway for lack of knowledge about
which relations are part of an outer join's outer side; getting this right
requires adding an outer_relids field to RestrictInfo.

Tom Lane dd4134ea56 Revisit handling of UNION ALL subqueries with non-Var output columns.
In commit 57664ed25e I tried to fix a bug
reported by Teodor Sigaev by making non-simple-Var output columns distinct
(by wrapping their expressions with dummy PlaceHolderVar nodes).  This did
not work too well.  Commit b28ffd0fcc fixed
some ensuing problems with matching to child indexes, but per a recent
report from Claus Stadler, constraint exclusion of UNION ALL subqueries was
still broken, because constant-simplification didn't handle the injected
PlaceHolderVars well either.  On reflection, the original patch was quite
misguided: there is no reason to expect that EquivalenceClass child members
will be distinct.  So instead of trying to make them so, we should ensure
that we can cope with the situation when they're not.

Accordingly, this patch reverts the code changes in the above-mentioned
commits (though the regression test cases they added stay).  Instead, I've
added assorted defenses to make sure that duplicate EC child members don't
cause any problems.  Teodor's original problem ("MergeAppend child's
targetlist doesn't match MergeAppend") is addressed more directly by
revising prepare_sort_from_pathkeys to let the parent MergeAppend's sort
list guide creation of each child's sort list.

In passing, get rid of add_sort_column; as far as I can tell, testing for
duplicate sort keys at this stage is dead code.  Certainly it doesn't
trigger often enough to be worth expending cycles on in ordinary queries.
And keeping the test would've greatly complicated the new logic in
prepare_sort_from_pathkeys, because comparing pathkey list entries against
a previous output array requires that we not skip any entries in the list.

Back-patch to 9.1, like the previous patches.  The only known issue in
this area that wasn't caused by the ill-advised previous patches was the
MergeAppend planning failure, which of course is not relevant before 9.1.
It's possible that we need some of the new defenses against duplicate child
EC entries in older branches, but until there's some clear evidence of that
I'm going to refrain from back-patching further.

Tom Lane d06e2d2005 Add ORDER BY to a query to prevent occasional regression test failures.
Per buildfarm, we sometimes get row-ordering variations in the output.
This also makes this query look more like numerous other ones in the same
test file.

Peter Eisentraut db49517c62 Rename the internal structures of the CREATE TABLE (LIKE ...) facility
The original implementation of this interpreted it as a kind of
"inheritance" facility and named all the internal structures
accordingly.  This turned out to be very confusing, because it has
nothing to do with the INHERITS feature.  So rename all the internal
parser infrastructure, update the comments, adjust the error messages,
and split up the regression tests.

Alvaro Herrera 61d81bd28d Allow CHECK constraints to be declared ONLY
This makes them enforceable only on the parent table, not on children
tables.  This is useful in various situations, per discussion involving
people bitten by the restrictive behavior introduced in 8.4.

Tom Lane 57664ed25e Wrap appendrel member outputs in PlaceHolderVars in additional cases.
Add PlaceHolderVar wrappers as needed to make UNION ALL sub-select output
expressions appear non-constant and distinct from each other.  This makes
the world safe for add_child_rel_equivalences to do what it does.  Before,
it was possible for that function to add identical expressions to different
EquivalenceClasses, which logically should imply merging such ECs, which
would be wrong; or to improperly add a constant to an EquivalenceClass,
drastically changing its behavior.  Per report from Teodor Sigaev.

The only currently known consequence of this bug is "MergeAppend child's
targetlist doesn't match MergeAppend" planner failures in 9.1 and later.
I am suspicious that there may be other failure modes that could affect
older release branches; but in the absence of any hard evidence, I'll
refrain from back-patching further than 9.1.

Tom Lane 11cad29c91 Support MergeAppend plans, to allow sorted output from append relations.
This patch eliminates the former need to sort the output of an Append scan
when an ordered scan of an inheritance tree is wanted.  This should be
particularly useful for fast-start cases such as queries with LIMIT.

Original patch by Greg Stark, with further hacking by Hans-Jurgen Schonig,
Robert Haas, and Tom Lane.

Robert Haas 63f9282f6e Tighten integrity checks on ALTER TABLE ... ALTER COLUMN ... RENAME.
When a column is renamed, we recursively rename the same column in
all descendent tables.  But if one of those tables also inherits that
column from a table outside the inheritance hierarchy rooted at the
named table, we must throw an error.  The previous coding correctly
prohibited the rename when the parent had inherited the column from
elsewhere, but overlooked the case where the parent was OK but a child
table also inherited the same column from a second, unrelated parent.

For now, not backpatched due to lack of complaints from the field.

Tom Lane b7d6795445 Disallow comments on columns of relation types other than tables, views,
and composite types, which are the only relkinds for which pg_dump support
exists for dumping column comments.  There is no obvious usefulness for
comments on columns of sequences or toast tables; and while comments on
index columns might have some value, it's not worth the risk of compatibility
problems due to possible changes in the algorithm for assigning names to
index columns.  Per discussion.

In consequence, remove now-dead code for copying such comments in CREATE TABLE
LIKE.

Tom Lane e0c433c4a3 Change CREATE TABLE so that column default expressions coming from different
inheritance parent tables are compared using equal(), instead of doing
strcmp() on the nodeToString representation.  The old implementation was
always a tad cheesy, and it finally fails completely as of 8.4, now that the
node tree might contain syntax location information.  equal() knows it's
supposed to ignore those fields, but strcmp() hardly can.  Per recent
report from Scott Ribe.

Tom Lane cd902b331d Change the rules for inherited CHECK constraints to be essentially the same
as those for inherited columns; that is, it's no longer allowed for a child
table to not have a check constraint matching one that exists on a parent.
This satisfies the principle of least surprise (rows selected from the parent
will always appear to meet its check constraints) and eliminates some
longstanding bogosity in pg_dump, which formerly had to guess about whether
check constraints were really inherited or not.

The implementation involves adding conislocal and coninhcount columns to
pg_constraint (paralleling attislocal and attinhcount in pg_attribute)
and refactoring various ALTER TABLE actions to be more like those for
columns.

Tom Lane 4e91824b94 Make some adjustments to reduce platform dependencies in plan selection.
In particular, there was a mathematical tie between the two possible
nestloop-with-materialized-inner-scan plans for a join (ie, we computed
the same cost with either input on the inside), resulting in a roundoff
error driven choice, if the relations were both small enough to fit in
sort_mem.  Add a small cost factor to ensure we prefer materializing the
smaller input.  This changes several regression test plans, but with any
luck we will now have more stability across platforms.

Tom Lane 077db40fa1 ALTER TABLE rewrite. New cool stuff:
* ALTER ... ADD COLUMN with defaults and NOT NULL constraints works per SQL
spec.  A default is implemented by rewriting the table with the new value
stored in each row.

* ALTER COLUMN TYPE.  You can change a column's datatype to anything you
want, so long as you can specify how to convert the old value.  Rewrites
the table.  (Possible future improvement: optimize no-op conversions such
as varchar(N) to varchar(N+1).)

* Multiple ALTER actions in a single ALTER TABLE command.  You can perform
any number of column additions, type changes, and constraint additions with
only one pass over the table contents.

Basic documentation provided in ALTER TABLE ref page, but some more docs
work is needed.

As per the definition that it's user defined columns, OIDs are NOT

Tom Lane 0a02d47a11 Enforces NOT NULL constraints to be applied against new PRIMARY KEY
columns in DefineIndex.  So, ALTER TABLE ... PRIMARY KEY will now
automatically add the NOT NULL constraint.  It appeared the alter_table
regression test wanted this to occur, as after the change the regression
test better matched in inline 'fails'/'succeeds' comments.

Tom Lane 2fb6cc9045 Remove not-really-standard implementation of CREATE TABLE's UNDER clause,
and revert documentation to describe the existing INHERITS clause
instead, per recent discussion in pghackers.  Also fix implementation
of SQL_inheritance SET variable: it is not cool to look at this var
during the initial parsing phase, only during parse_analyze().  See
recent bug report concerning misinterpretation of date constants just
after a SET TIMEZONE command.  gram.y really has to be an invariant
transformation of the query string to a raw parsetree; anything that
can vary with time must be done during parse analysis.
