Tom Lane 8472bf7a73 Allow float8, int8, and related datatypes to be passed by value on machines
where Datum is 8 bytes wide. Since this will break old-style C functions
(those still using version 0 calling convention) that have arguments or
results of these types, provide a configure option to disable it and retain
the old pass-by-reference behavior. Likewise, provide a configure option
to disable the recently-committed float4 pass-by-value change.

Zoltan Boszormenyi, plus configurability stuff by me.

Alvaro Herrera 7861d72ea2 Modify the float4 datatype to be pass-by-val. Along the way, remove the last
uses of the long-deprecated float32 in contrib/seg; the definitions themselves
are still there, but no longer used. fmgr/README updated to match.

I added a CREATE FUNCTION to account for existing seg_center() code in seg.c
too, and some tests for it and the neighbor functions. At the same time,
remove checks for NULL which are not needed (because the functions are declared
STRICT).

I had to do some adjustments to contrib's btree_gist too. The choices for
representation there are not ideal for changing the underlying types :-(

Original patch by Zoltan Boszormenyi, with some adjustments by me.

Peter Eisentraut a7b7b07af3 Enable probes to work with Mac OS X Leopard and other OSes that will
support DTrace in the future.

Switch from using DTRACE_PROBEn macros to the dynamically generated macros.
Use "dtrace -h" to create a header file that contains the dynamically
generated macros to be used in the source code instead of the DTRACE_PROBEn
macros. A dummy header file is generated for builds without DTrace support.

Tom Lane 9713c06319 Change the declaration of struct varlena so that the length word is
represented as "char ...[4]" not "int32". Since the length word is never
supposed to be accessed via this struct member anyway, this won't break
any existing code that is following the rules. The advantage is that C
compilers will no longer assume that a pointer to struct varlena is
word-aligned, which prevents incorrect optimizations in TOAST-pointer
access and perhaps other places. gcc doesn't seem to do this (at least
not at -O2), but the problem is demonstrable on some other compilers.

I changed struct inet as well, but didn't bother to touch a lot of other
struct definitions in which it wouldn't make any difference because there
were other fields forcing int alignment anyway. Hopefully none of those
struct definitions are used for accessing unaligned Datums.

Tom Lane 295e63983d Implement lazy XID allocation: transactions that do not modify any database
rows will normally never obtain an XID at all. We already did things this way
for subtransactions, but this patch extends the concept to top-level
transactions. In applications where there are lots of short read-only
transactions, this should improve performance noticeably; not so much from
removal of the actual XID-assignments, as from reduction of overhead that's
driven by the rate of XID consumption. We add a concept of a "virtual
transaction ID" so that active transactions can be uniquely identified even
if they don't have a regular XID. This is a much lighter-weight concept:
uniqueness of VXIDs is only guaranteed over the short term, and no on-disk
record is made about them.

Tom Lane 234a02b2a8 Replace direct assignments to VARATT_SIZEP(x) with SET_VARSIZE(x, len).
Get rid of VARATT_SIZE and VARATT_DATA, which were simply redundant with
VARSIZE and VARDATA, and as a consequence almost no code was using the
longer names. Rename the length fields of struct varlena and various
derived structures to catch anyplace that was accessing them directly;
and clean up various places so caught. In itself this patch doesn't
change any behavior at all, but it is necessary infrastructure if we hope
to play any games with the representation of varlena headers.

Tom Lane 23c4978e6c Rename MaxTupleSize to MaxHeapTupleSize to clarify that it's not meant to
describe the maximum size of index tuples (which is typically AM-dependent
anyway); and consequently remove the bogus deduction for "special space"
that was built into it.

Adjust TOAST_TUPLE_THRESHOLD and TOAST_MAX_CHUNK_SIZE to avoid wasting two
bytes per toast chunk, and to ensure that the calculation correctly tracks any
future changes in page header size. The computation had been inaccurate in a
way that didn't cause any harm except space wastage, but future changes could
have broken it more drastically.

Fix the calculation of BTMaxItemSize, which was formerly computed as 1 byte
more than it could safely be. This didn't cause any harm in practice because
it's only compared against maxalign'd lengths, but future changes in the size
of page headers or btree special space could have exposed the problem.

initdb forced because of change in TOAST_MAX_CHUNK_SIZE, which alters the
storage of toast tables.

Tom Lane 134b463f02 Fix up pg_dump to do string escaping fully correctly for client encoding
and standard_conforming_strings; likewise for the other client programs
that need it. As per previous discussion, a pg_dump dump now conforms
to the standard_conforming_strings setting of the source database.
We don't use E'' syntax in the dump, thereby improving portability of
the SQL. I added a SET escape_strings_warning = off command to keep
the dumps from getting a lot of back-chatter from that.
2006-05-28 21:13:54 +00:00
Bruce Momjian 7a846ecc00 Use E'' strings internally only when standard_conforming_strings =
'off'. This allows pg_dump output with standard_conforming_strings =
'on' to generate proper strings that can be loaded into other databases
without the backslash doubling we typically do. I have added the
dumping of the standard_conforming_strings value to pg_dump.

I also added standard backslash handling for plpgsql.

Tom Lane 0fcc3c2f1d Repair a low-probability race condition identified by Qingqing Zhou.
If a process abandons a wait in LockBufferForCleanup (in practice,
only happens if someone cancels a VACUUM) just before someone else
sends it a signal indicating the buffer is available, it was possible
for the wakeup to remain in the process' semaphore, causing misbehavior
next time the process waited for an lmgr lock. Rather than try to
prevent the race condition directly, it seems best to make the lock
manager robust against leftover wakeups, by having it repeat waiting
on the semaphore if the lock has not actually been granted or denied
yet.

Tom Lane bedb78d386 Implement sharable row-level locks, and use them for foreign key references
to eliminate unnecessary deadlocks. This commit adds SELECT ... FOR SHARE
paralleling SELECT ... FOR UPDATE. The implementation uses a new SLRU
data structure (managed much like pg_subtrans) to represent multiple-
transaction-ID sets. When more than one transaction is holding a shared
lock on a particular row, we create a MultiXactId representing that set
of transactions and store its ID in the row's XMAX. This scheme allows
an effectively unlimited number of row locks, just as we did before,
while not costing any extra overhead except when a shared lock actually
has to be shared. Still TODO: use the regular lock manager to control
the grant order when multiple backends are waiting for a row lock.

Tom Lane 70c9763d48 Convert oidvector and int2vector into variable-length arrays. This
change saves a great deal of space in pg_proc and its primary index,
and it eliminates the former requirement that INDEX_MAX_KEYS and
FUNC_MAX_ARGS have the same value. INDEX_MAX_KEYS is still embedded
in the on-disk representation (because it affects index tuple header
size), but FUNC_MAX_ARGS is not. I believe it would now be possible
to increase FUNC_MAX_ARGS at little cost, but haven't experimented yet.
There are still a lot of vestigial references to FUNC_MAX_ARGS, which
I will clean up in a separate pass. However, getting rid of it
altogether would require changing the FunctionCallInfoData struct,
and I'm not sure I want to buy into that.

Tom Lane 8f9f198603 Restructure subtransaction handling to reduce resource consumption,
as per recent discussions. Invent SubTransactionIds that are managed like
CommandIds (ie, counter is reset at start of each top transaction), and
use these instead of TransactionIds to keep track of subtransaction status
in those modules that need it. This means that a subtransaction does not
need an XID unless it actually inserts/modifies rows in the database.
Accordingly, don't assign it an XID nor take a lock on the XID until it
tries to do that. This saves a lot of overhead for subtransactions that
are only used for error recovery (eg plpgsql exceptions). Also, arrange
to release a subtransaction's XID lock as soon as the subtransaction
exits, in both the commit and abort cases. This avoids holding many
unique locks after a long series of subtransactions. The price is some
additional overhead in XactLockTableWait, but that seems acceptable.
Finally, restructure the state machine in xact.c to have a more orthogonal
set of states for subtransactions.

the straight locale-based folding in place for situations where we are
just manipulating user data and not trying to match it to built-in
strings --- for example, the SQL upper() function is still locale
dependent. Perhaps this will prove not to be what's wanted, but at

Tom Lane 58de480999 Clean up comments to be careful about the distinction between variable-
width types and varlena types, since with the introduction of CSTRING as
a more-or-less-real type, these concepts aren't identical. I've tried to
use varlena consistently to denote datatypes with typlen = -1, ie, they
have a length word and are potentially TOASTable; while the term variable
width covers both varlena and cstring (and, perhaps, someday other types
with other rules for computing the actual width). No code changes in this
commit except for renaming a couple macros.

Bruce Momjian 5d2fdf6e6d Here's a patch to add unknownin/unknownout support. I also poked around
looking for places that assume UNKNOWN == TEXT. One of those was the
"SET" type in pg_type.h, which was using textin/textout. This one I took

string_to_dataum (which is defined in both selfuncs.c and indxpath.c). I

Thomas G. Lockhart 547df0cc85 Support alternate storage scheme of 64-bit integer for date/time types.
Use "--enable-integer-datetimes" in configuration to use this rather
than the original float8 storage. I would recommend the integer-based
storage for any platform on which it is available. We perhaps should
make this the default for the production release.
Change timezone(timestamptz) results to return timestamp rather than
a character string. Formerly, we didn't have a way to represent
timestamps with an explicit time zone other than freezing the info into
a string. Now, we can reasonably omit the explicit time zone from the
result and return a timestamp with values appropriate for the specified
time zone. Much cleaner, and if you need the time zone in the result
you can put it into a character string pretty easily anyway.
Allow fractional seconds in date/time types even for dates prior to 1BC.
Limit timestamp data types to 6 decimal places of precision. Just right
for a micro-second storage of int8 date/time types, and reduces the
number of places ad-hoc rounding was occuring for the float8-based types.
Use lookup tables for precision/rounding calculations for timestamp and
interval types. Formerly used pow() to calculate the desired value but
with a more limited range there is no reason to not type in a lookup
table. Should be *much* better performance, though formerly there were
some optimizations to help minimize the number of times pow() was called.
Define a HAVE_INT64_TIMESTAMP variable. Based on the configure option
"--enable-integer-datetimes" and the existing internal INT64_IS_BUSTED.
Add explicit date/interval operators and functions for addition and
subtraction. Formerly relied on implicit type promotion from date to
 timestamp with time zone.
Change timezone conversion functions for the timetz type from "timetz()"
to "timezone()". This is consistant with other time zone coersion
 functions for other types.
Bump the catalog version to 200204201.
Fix up regression tests to reflect changes in fractional seconds
representation for date/times in BC eras.
All regression tests pass on my Linux box.

Bruce Momjian ea436f9fcf Well the absolute correct solution would involve all of:

The previous patch grouped:
int8, int16 and int32
uint8, uint16 and uint32
int64 and uint64 <-- this grouping is wrong on AIX 4.3.3 and below

If you prefer to make 4 groups out of this you could apply this patch.

----------------------------
revision 1.2
date: 2000/12/04 01:20:38; author: tgl; state: Exp; lines:
+18 -18
Eliminate some of the more blatant platform-dependencies ... it
builds here now, anyway ...
----------------------------

Which basically changes u_int*_t -> uint*_t, so now it does not
compile neither under Debian 2.2 nor under NetBSD 1.5 which
is platform independent<B8> all right. Also it replaces $KAME$
with $Id$ which is Bad Thing. PostgreSQL Id should be added as a
separate line so the file history could be seen.

So here is patch:

* changes uint*_t -> uint*. I guess that was the original
  intention
* adds uint64 type to include/c.h because its needed
[somebody should check if I did it right]
* adds back KAME Id, because KAME is the master repository
* removes stupid c++ comments in pgcrypto.c
* removes <sys/types.h> from the code, its not needed

Bruce Momjian 7a7e0240ea Here is the first batch of files and diffs for the BeOS port. I've run into
problems with some bits of it, but when all the patches are in it'll build
and we can fix it from there :) I've got a version that builds and runs and
that is the basis for these patches.

The first file has the new additional files that are required,
    template/beos
    backend/port/dynloader/beos.c
    backend/port/dynloader/beos.h
    include/port/beos.h
    makefiles/Makefile.beos

The second is a tarball of diffs against a few files. I've added sys/ipc.h
to configure and config.h via configure.in and config.h.in and then started
adding the check as this file isn't needed on BeOS and having loads of
#ifdef BEOS isn't as obvious as #ifdef HAVE_SYS_IPC_H and isn't as
autconf'ish :)
Files touched are
    include/c.h
    configure.in
    include/config.h.in
    include/storage/ipc.h
    include/utils/int8.h

Let me know how these go. I'll await a response before submitting any more.

Any problems just get in touch.

Bruce Momjian a060d5bedf Hello!
Here is a new patch for libpq, to make it work on Win32 again (since
the latest modifications broke it a little).

Please also add the file "libpq.rc" to the interfaces/libpq directory.
This will allow version-stamping of the generated DLL file, so that
automatic install programs (and interested users) can determine
the version of the file. The file is currently set as "prerelease".
Before the release, somebody should change the line "FILEFLAGS
VS_FF_PRERELEASE" to "FILEFLAGS 0". That information should probably
go into toos\RELEASE_CHANGES.

The patch is against the cvs as of ~ 1998-08-26 14:30 CEST.

assert.patch

adds a switch to turn on/off the assert checking if enabled at compile
time. You can now compile postgres with assert checking and disable it
at runtime in a production environment.

Ok. I have decided to use:

#if defined(sun) && if defined(sparc) && !defined(__svr4)

instead of defined(sunos4). interfaces/libpq/libpq-fe.h and
include/c.h have been modified(see included patches).

Another porblems I have found are:

o SunOS lacks strtoul(). to fix this I stole strtoul.c from FreeBSD
and place it under backend/port. necessary modifications have been
also made to backend/port/Makefile.in, include/config.h.in and
configure.in (see included patches).

I've completed the patch to fix the protocol and authentication issues I
was discussing a couple of weeks ago. The particular changes are:

- the protocol has a version number
- network byte order is used throughout
- the pg_hba.conf file is used to specify what method is used to
authenticate a frontend (either password, ident, trust, reject, krb4
  or krb5)
- support for multiplexed backends is removed
- appropriate changes to man pages
- the -a switch to many programs to specify an authentication service
  no longer has any effect
- the libpq.so version number has changed to 1.1

The new backend still supports the old protocol so old interfaces won't
break.
