Tom Lane 6919b7e329 Fix failure to ignore leftover temp tables after a server crash.
During crash recovery, we remove disk files belonging to temporary tables,
but the system catalog entries for such tables are intentionally not
cleaned up right away.  Instead, the first backend that uses a temp schema
is expected to clean out any leftover objects therein.  This approach
requires that we be careful to ignore leftover temp tables (since any
actual access attempt would fail), *even if their BackendId matches our
session*, if we have not yet established use of the session's corresponding
temp schema.  That worked fine in the past, but was broken by commit
debcec7dc3 which incorrectly removed the
rd_islocaltemp relcache flag.  Put it back, and undo various changes
that substituted tests like "rel->rd_backend == MyBackendId" for use
of a state-aware flag.  Per trouble report from Heikki Linnakangas.

Back-patch to 9.1 where the erroneous change was made.  In the back
branches, be careful to add rd_islocaltemp in a spot in the struct that
was alignment padding before, so as not to break existing add-on code.

Simon Riggs 5457a130d3 Reduce scope of changes for COPY FREEZE.
Allow support only for freezing tuples by explicit
command. Previous coding mistakenly extended
slightly beyond what was agreed as correct on -hackers.
So essentially a partial revoke of earlier work,
leaving just the COPY FREEZE command.

Simon Riggs 8de72b66a2 COPY FREEZE and mark committed on fresh tables.
When a relfilenode is created in this subtransaction or
a committed child transaction and it cannot otherwise
be seen by our own process, mark tuples committed ahead
of transaction commit for all COPY commands in same
transaction. If FREEZE specified on COPY
and pre-conditions met then rows will also be frozen.
Both options designed to avoid revisiting rows after commit,
increasing performance of subsequent commands after
data load and upgrade. pg_restore changes later.

Heikki Linnakangas dbdf9679d7 Use correct text domain for translating errcontext() messages.
errcontext() is typically used in an error context callback function, not
within an ereport() invocation like e.g errmsg and errdetail are. That means
that the message domain that the TEXTDOMAIN magic in ereport() determines
is not the right one for the errcontext() calls. The message domain needs to
be determined by the C file containing the errcontext() call, not the file
containing the ereport() call.

Fix by turning errcontext() into a macro that passes the TEXTDOMAIN to use
for the errcontext message. "errcontext" was used in a few places as a
variable or struct field name, I had to rename those out of the way, now
that errcontext is a macro.

We've had this problem all along, but this isn't doesn't seem worth
backporting. It's a fairly minor issue, and turning errcontext from a
function to a macro requires at least a recompile of any external code that
calls errcontext().

Alvaro Herrera c219d9b0a5 Split tuple struct defs from htup.h to htup_details.h
This reduces unnecessary exposure of other headers through htup.h, which
is very widely included by many files.

I have chosen to move the function prototypes to the new file as well,
because that means htup.h no longer needs to include tupdesc.h.  In
itself this doesn't have much effect in indirect inclusion of tupdesc.h
throughout the tree, because it's also required by execnodes.h; but it's
something to explore in the future, and it seemed best to do the htup.h
change now while I'm busy with it.

Tom Lane a36088bcfa Skip text->binary conversion of unnecessary columns in contrib/file_fdw.
When reading from a text- or CSV-format file in file_fdw, the datatype
input routines can consume a significant fraction of the runtime.
Often, the query does not need all the columns, so we can get a useful
speed boost by skipping I/O conversion for unnecessary columns.

To support this, add a "convert_selectively" option to the core COPY code.
This is undocumented and not accessible from SQL (for now, anyway).

Magnus Hagander 916d589a10 Make "unexpected EOF" messages DEBUG1 unless in an open transaction
"Unexpected EOF on client connection" without an open transaction
is mostly noise, so turn it into DEBUG1. With an open transaction it's
still indicating a problem, so keep those as ERROR, and change the message
to indicate that it happened in a transaction.

Tom Lane e8476f46fc Fix COPY FROM for null marker strings that correspond to invalid encoding.
The COPY documentation says "COPY FROM matches the input against the null
string before removing backslashes".  It is therefore reasonable to presume
that null markers like E'\\0' will work ... and they did, until someone put
the tests in the wrong order during microoptimization-driven rewrites.
Since then, we've been failing if the null marker is something that would
de-escape to an invalidly-encoded string.  Since null markers generally
need to be something that can't appear in the data, this represents a
nontrivial loss of functionality; surprising nobody noticed it earlier.

Per report from Jeff Davis.  Backpatch to 8.4 where this got broken.

Tom Lane 9dbf2b7d75 Restructure SELECT INTO's parsetree representation into CreateTableAsStmt.
Making this operation look like a utility statement seems generally a good
idea, and particularly so in light of the desire to provide command
triggers for utility statements.  The original choice of representing it as
SELECT with an IntoClause appendage had metastasized into rather a lot of
places, unfortunately, so that this patch is a great deal more complicated
than one might at first expect.

In particular, keeping EXPLAIN working for SELECT INTO and CREATE TABLE AS
subcommands required restructuring some EXPLAIN-related APIs.  Add-on code
that calls ExplainOnePlan or ExplainOneUtility, or uses
ExplainOneQuery_hook, will need adjustment.

Also, the cases PREPARE ... SELECT INTO and CREATE RULE ... SELECT INTO,
which formerly were accepted though undocumented, are no longer accepted.
The PREPARE case can be replaced with use of CREATE TABLE AS EXECUTE.
The CREATE RULE case doesn't seem to have much real-world use (since the
rule would work only once before failing with "table already exists"),
so we'll not bother with that one.

Both SELECT INTO and CREATE TABLE AS still return a command tag of
"SELECT nnnn".  There was some discussion of returning "CREATE TABLE nnnn",
but for the moment backwards compatibility wins the day.

Heikki Linnakangas d326d9e8ea In COPY, insert tuples to the heap in batches.
This greatly reduces the WAL volume, especially when the table is narrow.
The overhead of locking the heap page is also reduced. Reduced WAL traffic
also makes it scale a lot better, if you run multiple COPY processes at
the same time.

Tom Lane aa90e148ca Suppress -Wunused-result warnings about write() and fwrite().
This is merely an exercise in satisfying pedants, not a bug fix, because
in every case we were checking for failure later with ferror(), or else
there was nothing useful to be done about a failure anyway.  Document
the latter cases.

Peter Eisentraut 1b81c2fe6e Remove many -Wcast-qual warnings
This addresses only those cases that are easy to fix by adding or
moving a const qualifier or removing an unnecessary cast.  There are
many more complicated cases remaining.

Tom Lane c0b0076036 Rearrange snapshot handling to make rule expansion more consistent.
With this patch, portals, SQL functions, and SPI all agree that there
should be only a CommandCounterIncrement between the queries that are
generated from a single SQL command by rule expansion.  Fetching a whole
new snapshot now happens only between original queries.  This is equivalent
to the existing behavior of EXPLAIN ANALYZE, and it was judged to be the
best choice since it eliminates one source of concurrency hazards for
rules.  The patch should also make things marginally faster by reducing the
number of snapshot push/pop operations.

The patch removes pg_parse_and_rewrite(), which is no longer used anywhere.
There was considerable discussion about more aggressive refactoring of the
query-processing functions exported by postgres.c, but for the moment
nothing more has been done there.

I also took the opportunity to refactor snapmgr.c's API slightly: the
former PushUpdatedSnapshot() has been split into two functions.

Tom Lane a874fe7b4c Refactor the executor's API to support data-modifying CTEs better.
The originally committed patch for modifying CTEs didn't interact well
with EXPLAIN, as noted by myself, and also had corner-case problems with
triggers, as noted by Dean Rasheed.  Those problems show it is really not
practical for ExecutorEnd to call any user-defined code; so split the
cleanup duties out into a new function ExecutorFinish, which must be called
between the last ExecutorRun call and ExecutorEnd.  Some Asserts have been
added to these functions to help verify correct usage.

It is no longer necessary for callers of the executor to call
AfterTriggerBeginQuery/AfterTriggerEndQuery for themselves, as this is now
done by ExecutorStart/ExecutorFinish respectively.  If you really need to
suppress that and do it for yourself, pass EXEC_FLAG_SKIP_TRIGGERS to
ExecutorStart.

Also, refactor portal commit processing to allow for the possibility that
PortalDrop will invoke user-defined code.  I think this is not actually
necessary just yet, since the portal-execution-strategy logic forces any
non-pure-SELECT query to be run to completion before we will consider
committing.  But it seems like good future-proofing.

Tom Lane bdca82f44d Add a relkind field to RangeTblEntry to avoid some syscache lookups.
The recent additions for FDW support required checking foreign-table-ness
in several places in the parse/plan chain.  While it's not clear whether
that would really result in a noticeable slowdown, it seems best to avoid
any performance risk by keeping a copy of the relation's relkind in
RangeTblEntry.  That might have some other uses later, anyway.

Tom Lane a210be7720 Fix dangling-pointer problem in before-row update trigger processing.
ExecUpdate checked for whether ExecBRUpdateTriggers had returned a new
tuple value by seeing if the returned tuple was pointer-equal to the old
one.  But the "old one" was in estate->es_junkFilter's result slot, which
would be scribbled on if we had done an EvalPlanQual update in response to
a concurrent update of the target tuple; therefore we were comparing a
dangling pointer to a live one.  Given the right set of circumstances we
could get a false match, resulting in not forcing the tuple to be stored in
the slot we thought it was stored in.  In the case reported by Maxim Boguk
in bug #5798, this led to "cannot extract system attribute from virtual
tuple" failures when trying to do "RETURNING ctid".  I believe there is a
very-low-probability chance of more serious errors, such as generating
incorrect index entries based on the original rather than the
trigger-modified version of the row.

In HEAD, change all of ExecBRInsertTriggers, ExecIRInsertTriggers,
ExecBRUpdateTriggers, and ExecIRUpdateTriggers so that they continue to
have similar APIs.  In the back branches I just changed
ExecBRUpdateTriggers, since there is no bug in the ExecBRInsertTriggers
case.

Itagaki Takahiro 3cba8240a1 Add ENCODING option to COPY TO/FROM and file_fdw.
File encodings can be specified separately from client encoding.
If not specified, client encoding is used for backward compatibility.

Cases when the encoding doesn't match client encoding are slower
than matched cases because we don't have conversion procs for other
encodings. Performance improvement would be be a future work.

Tom Lane 7c5d0ae707 Add contrib/file_fdw foreign-data wrapper for reading files via COPY.
This is both very useful in its own right, and an important test case
for the core FDW support.

This commit includes a small refactoring of copy.c to expose its option
checking code as a separately callable function.  The original patch
submission duplicated hundreds of lines of that code, which seemed pretty
unmaintainable.

Robert Haas 0d692a0dc9 Basic foreign table support.
Foreign tables are a core component of SQL/MED.  This commit does
not provide a working SQL/MED infrastructure, because foreign tables
cannot yet be queried.  Support for foreign table scans will need to
be added in a future patch.  However, this patch creates the necessary
system catalog structure, syntax support, and support for ancillary
operations such as COMMENT and SECURITY LABEL.

Tom Lane 04f4e10cfc Use symbolic names not octal constants for file permission flags.
Purely cosmetic patch to make our coding standards more consistent ---
we were doing symbolic some places and octal other places.  This patch
fixes all C-coded uses of mkdir, chmod, and umask.  There might be some
other calls I missed.  Inconsistency noted while researching tablespace
directory permissions issue.

Andrew Dunstan af1a614ec6 Allow the low level COPY routines to read arbitrary numbers of fields.
This doesn't involve any user-visible change in behavior, but will be
useful when the COPY routines are exposed to allow their use by Foreign
Data Wrapper routines, which will be able to use these routines to read
irregular CSV files, for example.

Tom Lane 2ec993a7cb Support triggers on views.
This patch adds the SQL-standard concept of an INSTEAD OF trigger, which
is fired instead of performing a physical insert/update/delete.  The
trigger function is passed the entire old and/or new rows of the view,
and must figure out what to do to the underlying tables to implement
the update.  So this feature can be used to implement updatable views
using trigger programming style rather than rule hacking.

In passing, this patch corrects the names of some columns in the
information_schema.triggers view.  It seems the SQL committee renamed
them somewhere between SQL:99 and SQL:2003.

Tom Lane f906e0786e Make sure we wait for protocol-level EOF when ending binary COPY IN.
The previous coding just terminated the COPY immediately after seeing
the EOF marker (-1 where a row field count is expected).  The expected
CopyDone or CopyFail message just got thrown away later, since we weren't
in COPY mode anymore.  This behavior complicated matters for the JDBC
driver, and arguably was the wrong thing in any case since a CopyFail
message after the marker wouldn't be honored.

Note that there is a behavioral change here: extra data after the EOF
marker was silently ignored before, but now it will cause an error.
Hence not back-patching, although this is arguably a bug.

Robert Haas debcec7dc3 Include the backend ID in the relpath of temporary relations.
This allows us to reliably remove all leftover temporary relation
files on cluster startup without reference to system catalogs or WAL;
therefore, we no longer include temporary relations in XLOG_XACT_COMMIT
and XLOG_XACT_ABORT WAL records.

Since these changes require including a backend ID in each
SharedInvalSmgrMsg, the size of the SharedInvalidationMessage.id
field has been reduced from two bytes to one, and the maximum number
of connections has been reduced from INT_MAX / 4 to 2^23-1.  It would
be possible to remove these restrictions by increasing the size of
SharedInvalidationMessage by 4 bytes, but right now that doesn't seem
like a good trade-off.

Robert Haas b8c6c71d1c Centralize DML permissions-checking logic.
Remove bespoke code in DoCopy and RI_Initial_Check, which now instead
fabricate call ExecCheckRTPerms with a manufactured RangeTblEntry.
This is intended to make it feasible for an enhanced security provider
to actually make use of ExecutorCheckPerms_hook, but also has the
advantage that RI_Initial_Check can allow use of the fast-path when
column-level but not table-level permissions are present.

Heikki Linnakangas 9b8a73326e Introduce wal_level GUC to explicitly control if information needed for
archival or hot standby should be WAL-logged, instead of deducing that from
other options like archive_mode. This replaces recovery_connections GUC in
the primary, where it now has no effect, but it's still used in the standby
to enable/disable hot standby.

Remove the WAL-logging of "unlogged operations", like creating an index
without WAL-logging and fsyncing it at the end. Instead, we keep a copy of
the wal_mode setting and the settings that affect how much shared memory a
hot standby server needs to track master transactions (max_connections,
max_prepared_xacts, max_locks_per_xact) in pg_control. Whenever the settings
change, at server restart, write a WAL record noting the new settings and
update pg_control. This allows us to notice the change in those settings in
the standby at the right moment, they used to be included in checkpoint
records, but that meant that a changed value was not reflected in the
standby until the first checkpoint after the change.

Bump PG_CONTROL_VERSION and XLOG_PAGE_MAGIC. Whack XLOG_PAGE_MAGIC back to
the sequence it used to follow, before hot standby and subsequent patches
changed it to 0x9003.

Tom Lane 05d8a561ff Clean up handling of XactReadOnly and RecoveryInProgress checks.
Add some checks that seem logically necessary, in particular let's make
real sure that HS slave sessions cannot create temp tables.  (If they did
they would think that temp tables belonging to the master's session with
the same BackendId were theirs.  We *must* not allow myTempNamespace to
become set in a slave session.)

Change setval() and nextval() so that they are only allowed on temp sequences
in a read-only transaction.  This seems consistent with what we allow for
table modifications in read-only transactions.  Since an HS slave can't have a
temp sequence, this also provides a nicer cure for the setval PANIC reported
by Erik Rijkers.

Make the error messages more uniform, and have them mention the specific
command being complained of.  This seems worth the trifling amount of extra
code, since people are likely to see such messages a lot more than before.

Tom Lane 0a469c8769 Remove old-style VACUUM FULL (which was known for a little while as
VACUUM FULL INPLACE), along with a boatload of subsidiary code and complexity.
Per discussion, the use case for this method of vacuuming is no longer large
enough to justify maintaining it; not to mention that we don't wish to invest
the work that would be needed to make it play nicely with Hot Standby.

Aside from the code directly related to old-style VACUUM FULL, this commit
removes support for certain WAL record types that could only be generated
within VACUUM FULL, redirect-pointer removal in heap_page_prune, and
nontransactional generation of cache invalidation sinval messages (the last
being the sticking point for Hot Standby).

We still have to retain all code that copes with finding HEAP_MOVED_OFF and
HEAP_MOVED_IN flag bits on existing tuples.  This can't be removed as long
as we want to support in-place update from pre-9.0 databases.

Heikki Linnakangas 9de778b24b Move the responsibility of writing a "unlogged WAL operation" record from
heap_sync() to the callers, because heap_sync() is sometimes called even
if the operation itself is WAL-logged. This eliminates the bogus unlogged
records from CLUSTER that Simon Riggs reported, patch by Fujii Masao.

Tom Lane 034fffbf31 Fix memory leak created by deferrable-index-constraints patches.
We need to free the OID list returned by ExecInsertIndexTuples to avoid
a query-lifespan memory leak.  When many rows require rechecking, this
can be a significant leak --- it's even more than the space used for the
queued trigger events.

Heikki Linnakangas 40f908bdcd Introduce Streaming Replication.
This includes two new kinds of postmaster processes, walsenders and
walreceiver. Walreceiver is responsible for connecting to the primary server
and streaming WAL to disk, while walsender runs in the primary server and
streams WAL from disk to the client.

Documentation still needs work, but the basics are there. We will probably
pull the replication section to a new chapter later on, as well as the
sections describing file-based replication. But let's do that as a separate
patch, so that it's easier to see what has been added/changed. This patch
also adds a new section to the chapter about FE/BE protocol, documenting the
protocol used by walsender/walreceivxer.

Bump catalog version because of two new functions,
pg_last_xlog_receive_location() and pg_last_xlog_replay_location(), for
monitoring the progress of replication.

Robert Haas cddca5ec13 Add an EXPLAIN (BUFFERS) option to show buffer-usage statistics.
This patch also removes buffer-usage statistics from the track_counts
output, since this (or the global server statistics) is deemed to be a better
interface to this information.
