Thomas Munro 7114791158 ExtendBufferedWhat -> BufferManagerRelation.
Commit 31966b15 invented a way for functions dealing with relation
extension to accept a Relation in online code and an SMgrRelation in
recovery code.  It seems highly likely that future bufmgr.c interfaces
will face the same problem, and need to do something similar.
Generalize the names so that each interface doesn't have to re-invent
the wheel.

Back-patch to 16.  Since extension AM authors might start using the
constructor macros once 16 ships, we agreed to do the rename in 16
rather than waiting for 17.

Andres Freund acab1b0914 Convert many uses of ReadBuffer[Extended](P_NEW) to ExtendBufferedRel()
A few places are not converted. Some because they are tackled in later
commits (e.g. hio.c, xlogutils.c), some because they are more
complicated (e.g. brin_pageops.c).  Having a few users of ReadBuffer(P_NEW) is
good anyway, to ensure the backward compat path stays working.

Andres Freund 61b313e47e Pass down table relation into more index relation functions
This is done in preparation for logical decoding on standby, which needs to
include whether visibility affecting WAL records are about a (user) catalog
table. Which is only known for the table, not the indexes.

It's also nice to be able to pass the heap relation to GlobalVisTestFor() in
vacuumRedirectAndPlaceholder().

The previous macro implementations just cast the argument to a target
type but did not check whether the input type was appropriate.  The
function implementation can do better type checking of the input type.

For the *GetDatumFast() macros, converting to an inline function
doesn't work in the !USE_FLOAT8_BYVAL case, but we can use
AssertVariableIsOfTypeMacro() to get a similar level of type checking.

Tom Lane 3804539e48 Replace random(), pg_erand48(), etc with a better PRNG API and algorithm.
Standardize on xoroshiro128** as our basic PRNG algorithm, eliminating
a bunch of platform dependencies as well as fundamentally-obsolete PRNG
code.  In addition, this API replacement will ease replacing the
algorithm again in future, should that become necessary.

xoroshiro128** is a few percent slower than the drand48 family,
but it can produce full-width 64-bit random values not only 48-bit,
and it should be much more trustworthy.  It's likely to be noticeably
faster than the platform's random(), depending on which platform you
are thinking about; and we can have non-global state vectors easily,
unlike with random().  It is not cryptographically strong, but neither
are the functions it replaces.

Michael Paquier 4c0239cb7a Remove redundant memset(0) calls for page init of some index AMs
Bloom, GIN, GiST and SP-GiST rely on PageInit() to initialize the
contents of a page, and this routine fills entirely a page with zeros
for a size of BLCKSZ, including the special space.  Those index AMs have
been using an extra memset() call to fill with zeros the special page
space, or even the whole page, which is not necessary as PageInit()
already does this work, so let's remove them.  GiST was not doing this
extra call, but has commented out a system call that did so since
6236991.

While on it, remove one MAXALIGN() for SP-GiST as PageInit() takes care
of that.  This makes the whole page initialization logic more consistent
across all index AMs.

Bruce Momjian 95d77149c5 Add macro RelationIsPermanent() to report relation permanence
Previously, to check relation permanence, the Relation's Form_pg_class
structure member relpersistence was compared to the value
RELPERSISTENCE_PERMANENT ("p"). This commit adds the macro
RelationIsPermanent() and is used in appropirate places to simplify the
code.  This matches other RelationIs* macros.

This macro will be used in more places in future cluster file encryption
patches.

Peter Geoghegan 617fffee8a Rename removable xid function for consistency.
GlobalVisIsRemovableFullXid() is now GlobalVisCheckRemovableFullXid().
This is consistent with the general convention for FullTransactionId
equivalents of functions that deal with TransactionId values.  It now
matches the nearby GlobalVisCheckRemovableXid() function, which performs
the same check for callers that use TransactionId values.

Heikki Linnakangas 16fa9b2b30 Add support for building GiST index by sorting.
This adds a new optional support function to the GiST access method:
sortsupport. If it is defined, the GiST index is built by sorting all data
to the order defined by the sortsupport's comparator function, and packing
the tuples in that order to GiST pages. This is similar to how B-tree
index build works, and is much faster than inserting the tuples one by
one. The resulting index is smaller too, because the pages are packed more
tightly, upto 'fillfactor'. The normal build method works by splitting
pages, which tends to lead to more wasted space.

The quality of the resulting index depends on how good the opclass-defined
sort order is. A good order preserves locality of the input data.

As the first user of this facility, add 'sortsupport' function to the
point_ops opclass. It sorts the points in Z-order (aka Morton Code), by
interleaving the bits of the X and Y coordinates.

Andres Freund dc7420c2c9 snapshot scalability: Don't compute global horizons while building snapshots.
To make GetSnapshotData() more scalable, it cannot not look at at each proc's
xmin: While snapshot contents do not need to change whenever a read-only
transaction commits or a snapshot is released, a proc's xmin is modified in
those cases. The frequency of xmin modifications leads to, particularly on
higher core count systems, many cache misses inside GetSnapshotData(), despite
the data underlying a snapshot not changing. That is the most
significant source of GetSnapshotData() scaling poorly on larger systems.

Without accessing xmins, GetSnapshotData() cannot calculate accurate horizons /
thresholds as it has so far. But we don't really have to: The horizons don't
actually change that much between GetSnapshotData() calls. Nor are the horizons
actually used every time a snapshot is built.

The trick this commit introduces is to delay computation of accurate horizons
until there use and using horizon boundaries to determine whether accurate
horizons need to be computed.

The use of RecentGlobal[Data]Xmin to decide whether a row version could be
removed has been replaces with new GlobalVisTest* functions.  These use two
thresholds to determine whether a row can be pruned:
1) definitely_needed, indicating that rows deleted by XIDs >= definitely_needed
   are definitely still visible.
2) maybe_needed, indicating that rows deleted by XIDs < maybe_needed can
   definitely be removed
GetSnapshotData() updates definitely_needed to be the xmin of the computed
snapshot.

When testing whether a row can be removed (with GlobalVisTestIsRemovableXid())
and the tested XID falls in between the two (i.e. XID >= maybe_needed && XID <
definitely_needed) the boundaries can be recomputed to be more accurate. As it
is not cheap to compute accurate boundaries, we limit the number of times that
happens in short succession.  As the boundaries used by
GlobalVisTestIsRemovableXid() are never reset (with maybe_needed updated by
GetSnapshotData()), it is likely that further test can benefit from an earlier
computation of accurate horizons.

To avoid regressing performance when old_snapshot_threshold is set (as that
requires an accurate horizon to be computed), heap_page_prune_opt() doesn't
unconditionally call TransactionIdLimitedForOldSnapshots() anymore. Both the
computation of the limited horizon, and the triggering of errors (with
SetOldSnapshotThresholdTimestamp()) is now only done when necessary to remove
tuples.

This commit just removes the accesses to PGXACT->xmin from
GetSnapshotData(), but other members of PGXACT residing in the same
cache line are accessed. Therefore this in itself does not result in a
significant improvement. Subsequent commits will take advantage of the
fact that GetSnapshotData() now does not need to access xmins anymore.

Note: This contains a workaround in heap_page_prune_opt() to keep the
snapshot_too_old tests working. While that workaround is ugly, the tests
currently are not meaningful, and it seems best to address them separately.

Noah Misch c6b92041d3 Skip WAL for new relfilenodes, under wal_level=minimal.
Until now, only selected bulk operations (e.g. COPY) did this.  If a
given relfilenode received both a WAL-skipping COPY and a WAL-logged
operation (e.g. INSERT), recovery could lose tuples from the COPY.  See
src/backend/access/transam/README section "Skipping WAL for New
RelFileNode" for the new coding rules.  Maintainers of table access
methods should examine that section.

To maintain data durability, just before commit, we choose between an
fsync of the relfilenode and copying its contents to WAL.  A new GUC,
wal_skip_threshold, guides that choice.  If this change slows a workload
that creates small, permanent relfilenodes under wal_level=minimal, try
adjusting wal_skip_threshold.  Users setting a timeout on COMMIT may
need to adjust that timeout, and log_min_duration_statement analysis
will reflect time consumption moving to COMMIT from commands like COPY.

Internally, this requires a reliable determination of whether
RollbackAndReleaseCurrentSubTransaction() would unlink a relation's
current relfilenode.  Introduce rd_firstRelfilenodeSubid.  Amend the
specification of rd_createSubid such that the field is zero when a new
rel has an old rd_node.  Make relcache.c retain entries for certain
dropped relations until end of transaction.

Bump XLOG_PAGE_MAGIC, since this introduces XLOG_GIST_ASSIGN_LSN.
Future servers accept older WAL, so this bump is discretionary.

Kyotaro Horiguchi, reviewed (in earlier, similar versions) by Robert
Haas.  Heikki Linnakangas and Michael Paquier implemented earlier
designs that materially clarified the problem.  Reviewed, in earlier
designs, by Andrew Dunstan, Andres Freund, Alvaro Herrera, Tom Lane,

Michael Paquier 3534fa2233 Refactor code building relation options
Historically, the code to build relation options has been shaped the
same way in multiple code paths by using a set of datums in input with
the options parsed with a static table which is then filled with the
option values.  This introduces a new common routine in reloptions.c to
do most of the legwork for the in-core code paths.

Alvaro Herrera 773df883e8 Support reloptions of enum type
All our current in core relation options of type string (not many,
admittedly) behave in reality like enums.  But after seeing an
implementation for enum reloptions, it's clear that strings are messier,
so introduce the new reloption type.  Switch all string options to be
enums instead.

Fortunately we have a recently introduced test module for reloptions, so
we don't lose coverage of string reloptions, which may still be used by
third-party modules.

Heikki Linnakangas 6655a7299d Use full 64-bit XID for checking if a deleted GiST page is old enough.
Otherwise, after a deleted page gets even older, it becomes unrecyclable
again. B-tree has the same problem, and has had since time immemorial,
but let's at least fix this in GiST, where this is new.

Backpatch to v12, where GiST page deletion was introduced.

Heikki Linnakangas 9155580fd5 Generate less WAL during GiST, GIN and SP-GiST index build.
Instead of WAL-logging every modification during the build separately,
first build the index without any WAL-logging, and make a separate pass
through the index at the end, to write all pages to the WAL. This
significantly reduces the amount of WAL generated, and is usually also
faster, despite the extra I/O needed for the extra scan through the index.
WAL generated this way is also faster to replay.

For GiST, the LSN-NSN interlock makes this a little tricky. All pages must
be marked with a valid (i.e. non-zero) LSN, so that the parent-child
LSN-NSN interlock works correctly. We now use magic value 1 for that during
index build. Change the fake LSN counter to begin from 1000, so that 1 is
safely smaller than any real or fake LSN. 2 would've been enough for our
purposes, but let's reserve a bigger range, in case we need more special
values in the future.

Heikki Linnakangas 7df159a620 Delete empty pages during GiST VACUUM.
To do this, we scan GiST two times. In the first pass we make note of
empty leaf pages and internal pages. At second pass we scan through
internal pages, looking for downlinks to the empty pages.

Deleting internal pages is still not supported, like in nbtree, the last
child of an internal page is never deleted. That means that if you have a
workload where new keys are always inserted to different area than where
old keys are removed, the index will still grow without bound. But the rate
of growth will be an order of magnitude slower than before.

Alexander Korotkov f2e403803f Support for INCLUDE attributes in GiST indexes
Similarly to B-tree, GiST index access method gets support of INCLUDE
attributes.  These attributes aren't used for tree navigation and aren't
present in non-leaf pages.  But they are present in leaf pages and can be
fetched during index-only scan.

The point of having INCLUDE attributes in GiST indexes is slightly different
from the point of having them in B-tree.  The main point of INCLUDE attributes
in B-tree is to define UNIQUE constraint over part of attributes enabled for
index-only scan.  In GiST the main point of INCLUDE attributes is to use
index-only scan for attributes, whose data types don't have GiST opclasses.

Alexander Korotkov 2a6368343f Add support for nearest-neighbor (KNN) searches to SP-GiST
Currently, KNN searches were supported only by GiST.  SP-GiST also capable to
support them.  This commit implements that support.  SP-GiST scan stack is
replaced with queue, which serves as stack if no ordering is specified.  KNN
support is provided for three SP-GIST opclasses: quad_point_ops, kd_point_ops
and poly_ops (catversion is bumped).  Some common parts between GiST and SP-GiST
KNNs are extracted into separate functions.

Tomas Vondra 6bf0bc842b Provide separate header file for built-in float types
Some data types under adt/ have separate header files, but most simple
ones do not, and their public functions are defined in builtins.h.  As
the patches improving geometric types will require making additional
functions public, this seems like a good opportunity to create a header
for floats types.

Commit 1acf757255 made _cmp functions public to solve NaN issues locally
for GiST indexes.  This patch reworks it in favour of a more widely
applicable API.  The API uses inline functions, as they are easier to

Alvaro Herrera f2c587067a Rethink how to get float.h in old Windows API for isnan/isinf
We include <float.h> in every place that needs isnan(), because MSVC
used to require it.  However, since MSVC 2013 that's no longer necessary
(cf. commit cec8394b5c), so we can retire the inclusion to a
version-specific stanza in win32_port.h, where it doesn't need to
pollute random .c files.  The header is of course still needed in a few
places for other reasons.

I (Álvaro) removed float.h from a few more files than in Emre's original
patch.  This doesn't break the build in my system, but we'll see what
the buildfarm has to say about it all.

Peter Eisentraut 2eb4a831e5 Change TRUE/FALSE to true/false
The lower case spellings are C and C++ standard and are used in most
parts of the PostgreSQL sources.  The upper case spellings are only used
in some files/modules.  So standardize on the standard spellings.

The APIs for ICU, Perl, and Windows define their own TRUE and FALSE, so
those are left as is when using those APIs.

In code comments, we use the lower-case spelling for the C concepts and
keep the upper-case spelling for the SQL concepts.

Tom Lane d3a4f89d8a Allow no-op GiST support functions to be omitted.
There are common use-cases in which the compress and/or decompress
functions can be omitted, with the result being that we make no
data transformation when storing or retrieving index values.
Previously, you had to provide a no-op function anyway, but this
patch allows such opclass support functions to be omitted.

Furthermore, if the compress function is omitted, then the core code
knows that the stored representation is the same as the original data.
This means we can allow index-only scans without requiring a fetch
function to be provided either.  Previously you had to provide a
no-op fetch function if you wanted IOS to work.

This reportedly provides a small performance benefit in such cases,
but IMO the real reason for doing it is just to reduce the amount of
useless boilerplate code that has to be written for GiST opclasses.

Tom Lane 382ceffdf7 Phase 3 of pgindent updates.
Don't move parenthesized lines to the left, even if that means they
flow past the right margin.

By default, BSD indent lines up statement continuation lines that are
within parentheses so that they start just to the right of the preceding
left parenthesis.  However, traditionally, if that resulted in the
continuation line extending to the right of the desired right margin,
then indent would push it left just far enough to not overrun the margin,
if it could do so without making the continuation line start to the left of
the current statement indent.  That makes for a weird mix of indentations
unless one has been completely rigid about never violating the 80-column
limit.

This behavior has been pretty universally panned by Postgres developers.
Hence, disable it with indent's new -lpl switch, so that parenthesized
lines are always lined up with the preceding left paren.

This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent
changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects.

Tom Lane 86dbbf20d8 Put back <float.h> in a few files that need it for _isnan().
Further fallout from commit c29aff959: there are some files that need
<float.h>, and were getting it from datatype/timestamp.h, but it was not
apparent in my (tgl's) testing because the requirement for <float.h>
exists only on certain Windows toolchains.

Tom Lane 9b88f27cb4 Allow index AMs to return either HeapTuple or IndexTuple format during IOS.
Previously, only IndexTuple format was supported for the output data of
an index-only scan.  This is fine for btree, which is just returning a
verbatim index tuple anyway.  It's not so fine for SP-GiST, which can
return reconstructed data that's much larger than a page.

To fix, extend the index AM API so that index-only scan data can be
returned in either HeapTuple or IndexTuple format.  There's other ways
we could have done it, but this way avoids an API break for index AMs
that aren't concerned with the issue, and it costs little except a couple
more fields in IndexScanDescs.

I changed both GiST and SP-GiST to use the HeapTuple method.  I'm not
very clear on whether GiST can reconstruct data that's too large for an
IndexTuple, but that seems possible, and it's not much of a code change to
fix.

Tom Lane ed0097e4f9 Add SQL-accessible functions for inspecting index AM properties.
Per discussion, we should provide such functions to replace the lost
ability to discover AM properties by inspecting pg_am (cf commit
65c5fcd35).  The added functionality is also meant to displace any code
that was looking directly at pg_index.indoption, since we'd rather not
believe that the bit meanings in that field are part of any client API
contract.

As future-proofing, define the SQL API to not assume that properties that
are currently AM-wide or index-wide will remain so unless they logically
must be; instead, expose them only when inquiring about a specific index
or even specific index column.  Also provide the ability for an index
AM to override the behavior.

In passing, document pg_am.amtype, overlooked in commit 473b93287.

Kevin Grittner a343e223a5 Revert no-op changes to BufferGetPage()
The reverted changes were intended to force a choice of whether any
newly-added BufferGetPage() calls needed to be accompanied by a
test of the snapshot age, to support the "snapshot too old"
feature.  Such an accompanying test is needed in about 7% of the
cases, where the page is being used as part of a scan rather than
positioning for other purposes (such as DML or vacuuming).  The
additional effort required for back-patching, and the doubt whether
the intended benefit would really be there, have indicated it is
best just to rely on developers to do the right thing based on
comments and existing usage, as we do with many other conventions.

This change should have little or no effect on generated executable
code.

Kevin Grittner 8b65cf4c5e Modify BufferGetPage() to prepare for "snapshot too old" feature
This patch is a no-op patch which is intended to reduce the chances
of failures of omission once the functional part of the "snapshot
too old" patch goes in.  It adds parameters for snapshot, relation,
and an enum to specify whether the snapshot age check needs to be
done for the page at this point.  This initial patch passes NULL
for the first two new parameters and BGP_NO_SNAPSHOT_TEST for the
third.  The follow-on patch will change the places where the test
needs to be made.

Tom Lane 65c5fcd353 Restructure index access method API to hide most of it at the C level.
This patch reduces pg_am to just two columns, a name and a handler
function.  All the data formerly obtained from pg_am is now provided
in a C struct returned by the handler function.  This is similar to
the designs we've adopted for FDWs and tablesample methods.  There
are multiple advantages.  For one, the index AM's support functions
are now simple C functions, making them faster to call and much less
error-prone, since the C compiler can now check function signatures.
For another, this will make it far more practical to define index access
methods in installable extensions.

A disadvantage is that SQL-level code can no longer see attributes
of index AMs; in particular, some of the crosschecks in the opr_sanity
regression test are no longer possible from SQL.  We've addressed that
by adding a facility for the index AM to perform such checks instead.
(Much more could be done in that line, but for now we're content if the
amvalidate functions more or less replace what opr_sanity used to do.)
We might also want to expose some sort of reporting functionality, but
this patch doesn't do that.
