Great.

A follow-up patch for current CVS HEAD is attached, and available at
http://troels.arvin.dk/db/pgsql/conformance/pgsql-sql-conformance-
followup.patch

The patch
 - includes a core feature ID that had been left
   out by mistake (C011)
 - updates the sql_feature_packages.txt table to
reflect changes in SQL:2003 which were not
covered properly in my last patch

Bruce Momjian 917c8bb407 On win32, there is currently no way to get the equivalent function of
the "ps" argument list on Unix - meaning that there is no way to
identify for example the stats processors or the bgwriter.

This patch adds this functionality, in a bit of a crufty way. It creates
a kernel Event object with the name of what would be in the title. This
can be viewed using for example Process Explorer.

It's been very handy for me during both debugging and using. I haven't
figured a better way, but perhaps someone has one that's less crufty? If
not, here is at least a working patch :-)

reasons I outlined in pghackers a few days ago.

Also, undo someone's overly optimistic decision to reduce tuple state

I might think it was a good idea to disable these checks in production
installations. But I don't.

Tom Lane 4e91824b94 Make some adjustments to reduce platform dependencies in plan selection.
In particular, there was a mathematical tie between the two possible
nestloop-with-materialized-inner-scan plans for a join (ie, we computed
the same cost with either input on the inside), resulting in a roundoff
error driven choice, if the relations were both small enough to fit in
sort_mem. Add a small cost factor to ensure we prefer materializing the
smaller input. This changes several regression test plans, but with any
luck we will now have more stability across platforms.

Tom Lane 5374d097de Change planner to use the current true disk file size as its estimate of
a relation's number of blocks, rather than the possibly-obsolete value
in pg_class.relpages. Scale the value in pg_class.reltuples correspondingly
to arrive at a hopefully more accurate number of rows. When pg_class
contains 0/0, estimate a tuple width from the column datatypes and divide
that into current file size to estimate number of rows. This improved
methodology allows us to jettison the ancient hacks that put bogus default
values into pg_class when a table is first created. Also, per a suggestion
from Simon, make VACUUM (but not VACUUM FULL or ANALYZE) adjust the value
it puts into pg_class.reltuples to try to represent the mean tuple density
instead of the minimal density that actually prevails just after VACUUM.
These changes alter the plans selected for certain regression tests, so
update the expected files accordingly. (I removed join_1.out because
it's not clear if it still applies; we can add back any variant versions
as they are shown to be needed.)

Tom Lane 236404fcd1 Our interface code for Spencer's regexp package was checking for regexp

Tom Lane cf796cc702 A client_encoding specification coming from the connection request has
to be processed by GUC before InitPostgres, because any required lookup
of the encoding conversion function has to be done during InitializeClientEncoding.
So, I broke this last week by moving GUC processing to after InitPostgres :-(.
What we can do as a compromise is process non-SUSET variables during
command line scanning (the same as before), and postpone the processing
of only SUSET variables. None of the SUSET variables need to be set
before InitPostgres.

Tom Lane 294c34bb9d Fix rounding problem in dynahash.c's decision about when the target
fill factor has been exceeded. We usually run with ffactor == 1, but

no need for it to be nearly as big as the global hash table, and since

significant fraction of subtransaction entry/exit overhead.

Tom Lane 7efa8411cc Rethink plpgsql's way of handling SPI execution during an exception block.
We don't really want to start a new SPI connection, just keep using the old
one; otherwise we have memory management problems as illustrated by

ensure the SPI stack state is properly restored, but then again what we
were doing before was a hack too, strictly speaking. Add a regression
test to cover this case.

Tom Lane 547bb4a7f2 Use a hopefully-more-reliable method of detecting default selectivity
estimates when combining the estimates for a range query. As pointed out
by Miquel van Smoorenburg, the existing check for an impossible combined
result would quite possibly fail to detect one default and one non-default
input. It seems better to use the default range query estimate in such
cases. To do so, add a check for an estimate of exactly DEFAULT_INEQ_SEL.
This is a bit ugly because it introduces additional coupling between
clauselist_selectivity and scalarltsel/scalargtsel, but it's not like
there wasn't plenty already...

mktime() and localtime(). The behavior for invalid or ambiguous times
at a DST transition is fixed to be really and truly "assume standard

again in 7.4. (There is some ongoing discussion about whether we should
raise an error instead, but for the moment I'll make it do what it was

Tom Lane 80559fa9e9 I found a corner case in which it is possible for RI_FKey_check's call
of HeapTupleSatisfiesItself() to trigger a hint-bit update on the tuple:
if the row was updated or deleted by a subtransaction of my own transaction
that was later rolled back. This cannot occur in pre-8.0 of course, so
the hint-bit patch applied a couple weeks ago is OK for existing releases.
But for 8.0 it seems we had better fix things so that RI_FKey_check can
pass the correct buffer number to HeapTupleSatisfiesItself. Accordingly,
add fields to the TriggerData struct to carry the buffer ID(s) for the
old and new tuple(s). There are other possible solutions but this one
seems cleanest; it will allow other AFTER-trigger functions to safely
do tqual.c calls if they want to. Put new fields at end of struct so
that there is no API breakage.

Tom Lane 26112850ec Fix OR-index-scan planner to recognize that a partial index is usable
for scanning one term of an OR clause if the index's predicate is implied
by that same OR clause term (possibly in conjunction with top-level WHERE
clauses). Per recent example from Dawid Kuroczko,
http://archives.postgresql.org/pgsql-performance/2004-10/msg00095.php
Also, fix a very long-standing bug in index predicate testing, namely the
bizarre ordering of decomposition of predicate and restriction clauses.
AFAICS the correct way is to break down the predicate all the way, and
then for each component term see if you can prove it from the entire
restriction set. The original coding had a purely-implementation-artifact
distinction between ANDing at the top level and ANDing below that, and
proceeded to get the decomposition order wrong everywhere below the top
level, with the result that even slightly complicated AND/OR predicates
could not be proven. For instance, given
create index foop on foo(f2) where f1=42 or f1=1
    or (f1 = 11 and f2 = 55);
the old code would fail to match this index to the query
select * from foo where f1 = 11 and f2 = 55;
when it obviously ought to match.

Tom Lane a8487e15ed Fix problems with SQL functions returning rowtypes that have dropped
columns. The returned tuple needs to have appropriate NULL columns
inserted so that it actually matches the declared rowtype. It seemed
convenient to use a JunkFilter for this, so I made some cleanups and
simplifications in the JunkFilter code to allow it to support this
additional functionality. (That in turn exposed a latent bug in
nodeAppend.c, which is that it was returning a tuple slot whose
descriptor didn't match its data.) Also, move check_sql_fn_retval

Bruce Momjian 902ca3e225 Here is a patch to fix win32 ssl builds. Summary of changes:
* Links with -leay32 and -lssleay32 instead of crypto and ssl. On win32,
"crypto and ssl" is only used for static linking.

* Initializes SSL in the backend and not just in the postmaster. We
cannot pass the SSL context from the postmaster through the parameter
file, because it contains function pointers.

* Split one error check in be-secure.c. Previously we could not tell
which of three calls actually failed. The previous code also returned
incorrect error messages if SSL_accept() failed - that function needs to
use SSL_get_error() on the return value, can't just use the error queue.

* Since the win32 implementation uses non-blocking sockets "behind the
scenes" in order to deliver signals correctly, implements a version of
SSL_accept() that can handle this. Also, add a wait function in case
SSL_read or SSL_write() needs more data.

will be destroyed by the internal commit. We must restore these pointers
to point to the newly-manufactured transaction context and resource owner,
rather than possibly pointing to deleted memory.
Also tweak xact.c so that AbortTransaction and AbortSubTransaction
forcibly restore a sane value for CurrentResourceOwner, much as they
have always done for CurrentMemoryContext. I'm not certain this is
necessary but I'm feeling paranoid today.

Tom Lane 8f9f198603 Restructure subtransaction handling to reduce resource consumption,
as per recent discussions. Invent SubTransactionIds that are managed like
CommandIds (ie, counter is reset at start of each top transaction), and
use these instead of TransactionIds to keep track of subtransaction status
in those modules that need it. This means that a subtransaction does not
need an XID unless it actually inserts/modifies rows in the database.
Accordingly, don't assign it an XID nor take a lock on the XID until it
tries to do that. This saves a lot of overhead for subtransactions that
are only used for error recovery (eg plpgsql exceptions). Also, arrange
to release a subtransaction's XID lock as soon as the subtransaction
exits, in both the commit and abort cases. This avoids holding many
unique locks after a long series of subtransactions. The price is some
additional overhead in XactLockTableWait, but that seems acceptable.
Finally, restructure the state machine in xact.c to have a more orthogonal
set of states for subtransactions.

Tom Lane b2c4071299 Redesign query-snapshot timing so that volatile functions in READ COMMITTED
mode see a fresh snapshot for each command in the function, rather than
using the latest interactive command's snapshot. Also, suppress fresh
snapshots as well as CommandCounterIncrement inside STABLE and IMMUTABLE
functions, instead using the snapshot taken for the most closely nested
regular query. (This behavior is only sane for read-only functions, so
the patch also enforces that such functions contain only SELECT commands.)
As per my proposal of 6-Sep-2004; I note that I floated essentially the
same proposal on 19-Jun-2002, but that discussion tailed off without any
action. Since 8.0 seems like the right place to be taking possibly
nontrivial backwards compatibility hits, let's get it done now.

Tom Lane b339d1fff6 Fire non-deferred AFTER triggers immediately upon query completion,
rather than when returning to the idle loop. This makes no particular
difference for interactively-issued queries, but it makes a big difference
for queries issued within functions: trigger execution now occurs before
the calling function is allowed to proceed. This responds to numerous
complaints about nonintuitive behavior of foreign key checking, such as
http://archives.postgresql.org/pgsql-bugs/2004-09/msg00020.php, and
appears to be required by the SQL99 spec.
Also take the opportunity to simplify the data structures used for the

for every command executed within a transaction. For long transactions
this was a significant memory leak. Instead, we can delete a portal's
or subtransaction's ResourceOwner immediately, if we physically transfer
the information about its locks up to the parent owner. This does not
fully solve the leak problem; we need to do something about counting
multiple acquisitions of the same lock in order to fix it. But it's a
necessary step along the way.

Tom Lane 4dbb880d3c Rearrange pg_subtrans handling as per recent discussion. pg_subtrans
updates are no longer WAL-logged nor even fsync'd; we do not need to,
since after a crash no old pg_subtrans data is needed again. We truncate
pg_subtrans to RecentGlobalXmin at each checkpoint. slru.c's API is
refactored a little bit to separate out the necessary decisions.
2004-08-23 23:22:45 +00:00
Tom Lane f009c316ba Tweak code so that pg_subtrans is never consulted for XIDs older than
RecentXmin (== MyProc->xmin). This ensures that it will be safe to
truncate pg_subtrans at RecentGlobalXmin, which should largely eliminate
any fear of bloat. Along the way, eliminate SubTransXidsHaveCommonAncestor,
which isn't really needed and could not give a trustworthy result anyway
under the lookback restriction.
In an unrelated but nearby change, #ifdef out GetUndoRecPtr, which has
been dead code since 2001 and seems unlikely to ever be resurrected.

Sigh... as usual, what is not tested does not work:-(

> Could we have a more complete patch?

Please find a submission attached. I hope it really fixes all decade,
century and millenium issues for extract and *_trunc functions on
interval
and other timestamp types. If someone could check that the results
are reasonnable, it would be great.

I indeed overlooked the fact that there were two functions. The patch
fixes the code so that both variants agree.

I added comments to interval extractions, because it relies on the C
division to have a negative remainder: -7/10 = 0 and remains -7.

As for *_trunc functions, I have chosen to put the first year of the
century or millennium: -100, 1, 101... 1001 2001 etc. Indeed, I don't
think it would make sense to put 2000 (last year of the 2nd millennium)
for rounding all years of the third millenium.

I also fixed the code so that all decades last 10 years and decade 199
means the 1990's.

I have added some tests that are relevant to deal with tricky cases. The
formula may be simplified, but all these cases must pass. Please keep
them.

Tom Lane bbd6eb5b95 Repair some issues with column aliases and RowExpr construction in the
presence of dropped columns. Document the already-presumed fact that
eref aliases in relation RTEs are supposed to have entries for dropped
columns; cause the user alias structs to have such entries too, so that
there's always a one-to-one mapping to the underlying physical attnums.
Adjust expandRTE() and related code to handle the case where a column
that is part of a JOIN has been dropped. Generalize expandRTE()'s API
so that it can be used in a couple of places that formerly rolled their
own implementation of the same logic. Fix ruleutils.c to suppress
display of aliases for columns that were dropped since the rule was made.

Tom Lane 19cd31b068 Fix bug introduced into _bt_getstackbuf() on 2003-Feb-21: the initial
value of 'start' could be past the end of the page, if the page was
split by some concurrent inserting process since we visited it. In
this situation the code could look at bogus entries and possibly find
a match (since after all those entries still contain what they had
before the split). This would lead to 'specified item offset is too large'
followed by 'PANIC: failed to add item to the page', as reported by Joe
Conway for scenarios involving heavy concurrent insertion activity.

Tom Lane 1a3de15a3a Dept. of further reflection: I looked around to see if any other callers
of XLogInsert had the same sort of checkpoint interlock problem as
RecordTransactionCommit, and indeed I found some. Btree index build
and ALTER TABLE SET TABLESPACE write data outside the friendly confines
of the buffer manager, and therefore they have to take their own
responsibility for checkpoint interlock. The easiest solution seems to
be to force smgrimmedsync at the end of the index build or table copy,
even when the operation is being WAL-logged. This is sufficient since
the new index or table will be of interest to no one if we don't get
as far as committing the current transaction.

Also repair a longstanding undocumented (as far as I can see) ability to
explicitly set array bounds in the array literal syntax. It now can
deal properly with negative array indicies. Modify array_out so that
arrays with non-standard lower bounds (i.e. not 1) are output with
the expicit dimension syntax. This fixes a longstanding issue whereby
arrays with non-default lower bounds had them changed to default
after a dump/reload cycle.

Tom Lane 0655b26282 log_destination should only be PGC_SIGHUP, not PGC_POSTMASTER, as per
discussion yesterday. Also a few improvements in the associated
documentation.

Tom Lane acd907bfcc Add cross-check that current timeline of pg_control is an ancestor of
recovery_target_timeline --- otherwise there is no path from the backup
to the requested timeline. This check was foreseen in the original
discussion but I forgot to implement it.

Tom Lane 3dba9cb694 Add a check on file size as an additional safety check that a WAL file
recovered from archive is not corrupt. It's not much but it will catch
one common problem, viz out-of-disk-space.
Also, force a WAL recovery scan when recovery.conf is present, even if
pg_control shows a clean shutdown. This allows recovery with a tar backup
that was taken with the postmaster shut down, as per complaint from
Mark Kirkwood.

Tom Lane 2042b3428d Invent WAL timelines, as per recent discussion, to make point-in-time
recovery more manageable. Also, undo recent change to add FILE_HEADER
and WASTED_SPACE records to XLOG; instead make the XLOG page header
variable-size with extra fields in the first page of an XLOG file.
This should fix the boundary-case bugs observed by Mark Kirkwood.
initdb forced due to change of XLOG representation.
