Tom Lane 959e61e917 Remove global variable scanCommandId in favor of storing a command ID
in snapshots, per my proposal of a few days ago. Also, tweak heapam.c
routines (heap_insert, heap_update, heap_delete, heap_mark4update) to
be passed the command ID to use, instead of doing GetCurrentCommandID.
For catalog updates they'll still get passed current command ID, but
for updates generated from the main executor they'll get passed the
command ID saved in the snapshot the query is using. This should fix
some corner cases associated with functions and triggers that advance
current command ID while an outer query is still in progress.

Tom Lane 44fbe20d62 Restructure indexscan API (index_beginscan, index_getnext) per
yesterday's proposal to pghackers. Also remove unnecessary parameters
to heap_beginscan, heap_rescan. I modified pg_proc.h to reflect the
new numbers of parameters for the AM interface routines, but did not
force an initdb because nothing actually looks at those fields.

Tom Lane f9e4f611a1 First pass at set-returning-functions in FROM, by Joe Conway with
some kibitzing from Tom Lane. Not everything works yet, and there's
no documentation or regression test, but let's commit this so Joe
doesn't need to cope with tracking changes in so many files ...

Tom Lane 31c775adeb Restructure aclcheck error reporting to make permission-failure
messages more uniform and internationalizable: the global array
aclcheck_error_strings[] is gone in favor of a subroutine
aclcheck_error().  Partial implementation of namespace-related
permission checks --- not all done yet.

Tom Lane 6d6ca2166c Change naming rule for ON SELECT rules of views: they're all just
_RETURN now, since there's no need to keep 'em unique anymore.

Tom Lane b3120804ad Rule names are now unique per-relation, rather than unique globally.
DROP RULE and COMMENT ON RULE syntax adds an 'ON tablename' clause,
similar to TRIGGER syntaxes. To allow loading of existing pg_dump
files containing COMMENT ON RULE, the COMMENT code will still accept
the old syntax --- but only if the target rulename is unique across
the whole database.

Tom Lane 1dbf8aa7a8 pg_class has a relnamespace column. You can create and access tables
in schemas other than the system namespace; however, there's no search
path yet, and not all operations work yet on tables outside the system
namespace.

Tom Lane 56c9b73c1d Change the aclchk.c routines to uniformly use OIDs to identify the
objects to be privilege-checked. Some change in their APIs would be
necessary no matter what in the schema environment, and simply getting
rid of the name-based interface entirely seems like the best way.

Tom Lane 95ef6a3448 First phase of SCHEMA changes, concentrating on fixing the grammar and
the parsetree representation. As yet we don't *do* anything with schema
names, just drop 'em on the floor; but you can enter schema-compatible
command syntax, and there's even a primitive CREATE SCHEMA command.
No doc updates yet, except to note that you can now extract a field
from a function-returning-row's result with (foo(...)).fieldname.

Tom Lane a51f004d29 Repair breakage of rules containing INSERT ... SELECT actions, per bug
report from Joel Burton. Turns out that my simple idea of turning the
SELECT into a subquery does not interact well *at all* with the way the
rule rewriter works. Really what we need to make INSERT ... SELECT work
cleanly is to decouple targetlists from rangetables: an INSERT ... SELECT
wants to have two levels of targetlist but only one rangetable. No time
for that for 7.1, however, so I've inserted some ugly hacks to make the
rewriter know explicitly about the structure of INSERT ... SELECT queries.
Ugh :-(

Tom Lane 2f35b4efdb Re-implement LIMIT/OFFSET as a plan node type, instead of a hack in
ExecutorRun. This allows LIMIT to work in a view. Also, LIMIT in a
cursor declaration will behave in a reasonable fashion, whereas before
it was overridden by the FETCH count.

Tom Lane 05e3d0ee86 Reimplementation of UNION/INTERSECT/EXCEPT. INTERSECT/EXCEPT now meet the
SQL92 semantics, including support for ALL option. All three can be used
in subqueries and views. DISTINCT and ORDER BY work now in views, too.
This rewrite fixes many problems with cross-datatype UNIONs and INSERT/SELECT
where the SELECT yields different datatypes than the INSERT needs. I did
that by making UNION subqueries and SELECT in INSERT be treated like
subselects-in-FROM, thereby allowing an extra level of targetlist where the
datatype conversions can be inserted safely.

Tom Lane 3a94e789f5 Subselects in FROM clause, per ISO syntax: FROM (SELECT ...) [AS] alias.
(Don't forget that an alias is required.) Views reimplemented as expanding
to subselect-in-FROM. Grouping, aggregates, DISTINCT in views actually
work now (he says optimistically). No UNION support in subselects/views
yet, but I have some ideas about that. Rule-related permissions checking
moved out of rewriter and into executor.
INITDB REQUIRED!

Bruce Momjian 264c068207 This patch implements a different "relkind"
for views. Views are now have a "relkind" of
RELKIND_VIEW instead of RELKIND_RELATION.

Also, views no longer have actual heap storage
files.

The following changes were made

1. CREATE VIEW sets the new relkind

2. The executor complains if a DELETE or
        INSERT references a view.

3. DROP RULE complains if an attempt is made
to delete a view SELECT rule.

4. CREATE RULE "_RETmytable" AS ON SELECT TO mytable DO INSTEAD ...
        1. checks to make sure mytable is empty.
        2. sets the relkind to RELKIND_VIEW.
        3. deletes the heap storage files.
5. LOCK myview is not allowed. :)

6. the regression test type_sanity was changed to
account for the new relkind value.

7. CREATE INDEX ON myview ... is not allowed.

8. VACUUM myview is not allowed.
VACUUM automatically skips views when do the entire
        database.

9. TRUNCATE myview is not allowed.

THINGS LEFT TO THINK ABOUT

o pg_views

o pg_dump

o pgsql (\d \dv)
o Do we really want to be able to inherit from views?

o Is 'DROP TABLE myview' OK?

Bruce Momjian 0ba0e32172 O.K. -
Here's the multibyte aware version of my patch to fix the truncation
of the rulename autogenerated during a CREATE VIEW. I've modified all
the places in the backend that want to construct the rulename to use
the MakeRetrieveViewRuleName(), where I put the #ifdef MULTIBYTE, so
that's the only place that knows how to construct a view rulename. Except
pg_dump, where I replicated the code, since it's a standalone binary.

The only effect the enduser will see is that views with names len(name)
> NAMEDATALEN-4 will fail to be created, if the derived rulename clases
with an existing rule: i.e. the user is trying to create two views with
long names whose first difference is past NAMEDATALEN-4 (but before
NAMEDATALEN: that'll error out after the viewname truncation.) In no
case will the user get left with a table without a view rule, as the
current code does.

Tom Lane 8f9fa0e143 Type lztext is toast.

Tom Lane b41f4ab8c4 Use a private memory context to store rule information in each relcache
entry that has rules. This allows us to release the rule parsetrees
on relcache flush without needing a working freeObject() routine.
Formerly, the rule trees were leaked permanently at relcache flush.
Also, clean up handling of rule creation and deletion --- there was
not sufficient locking of the relation being modified, and there was
no reliable notification of other backends that a relcache reload
was needed. Also, clean up relcache.c code so that scans of system
tables needed to load a relcache entry are done in the caller's
memory context, not in CacheMemoryContext. This prevents any
un-pfreed memory from those scans from becoming a permanent memory
leak.

Tom Lane 1aebc3618a First phase of memory management rewrite (see backend/utils/mmgr/README
for details). It doesn't really do that much yet, since there are no
short-term memory contexts in the executor, but the infrastructure is
in place and long-term contexts are handled reasonably. A few long-
standing bugs have been fixed, such as 'VACUUM; anything' in a single
query string crashing. Also, out-of-memory is now considered a
recoverable ERROR, not FATAL.
Eliminate a large amount of crufty, now-dead code in and around
memory management.
Fix problem with holding off SIGTRAP, SIGSEGV, etc in postmaster and
backend startup.

Tom Lane dd979f66be Redesign DISTINCT ON as discussed in pgsql-sql 1/25/00: syntax is now
SELECT DISTINCT ON (expr [, expr ...]) targetlist ...
and there is a check to make sure that the user didn't specify an ORDER BY
that's incompatible with the DISTINCT operation.
Reimplement nodeUnique and nodeGroup to use the proper datatype-specific
equality function for each column being compared --- they used to do
bitwise comparisons or convert the data to text strings and strcmp().
(To add insult to injury, they'd look up the conversion functions once
for each tuple...) Parse/plan representation of DISTINCT is now a list
of SortClause nodes.
initdb forced by querytree change...

Tom Lane bd272cace6 Mega-commit to make heap_open/heap_openr/heap_close take an
additional argument specifying the kind of lock to acquire/release (or
'NoLock' to do no lock processing). Ensure that all relations are locked
with some appropriate lock level before being examined --- this ensures
that relevant shared-inval messages have been processed and should prevent
problems caused by concurrent VACUUM. Fix several bugs having to do with
mismatched increment/decrement of relation ref count and mismatched
heap_open/close (which amounts to the same thing). A bogus ref count on
a relation doesn't matter much *unless* a SI Inval message happens to
arrive at the wrong time, which is probably why we got away with this
sloppiness for so long. Repair missing grab of AccessExclusiveLock in
DROP TABLE, ALTER/RENAME TABLE, etc, as noted by Hiroshi.
Recommend 'make clean all' after pulling this update; I modified the
Relation struct layout slightly.
Will post further discussion to pghackers list shortly.
