Tom Lane f31dc0ada7 Partial indexes work again, courtesy of Martijn van Oosterhout.
Note: I didn't force an initdb, figuring that one today was enough.
However, there is a new function in pg_proc.h, and pg_dump won't be
able to dump partial indexes until you add that function.

Tom Lane c8076f09d2 Restructure index AM interface for index building and index tuple deletion,
per previous discussion on pghackers.  Most of the duplicate code in
different AMs' ambuild routines has been moved out to a common routine
in index.c; this means that all index types now do the right things about
inserting recently-dead tuples, etc.  (I also removed support for EXTEND
INDEX in the ambuild routines, since that's about to go away anyway, and
it cluttered the code a lot.)  The retail indextuple deletion routines have
been replaced by a "bulk delete" routine in which the indexscan is inside
the access method.  I haven't pushed this change as far as it should go yet,
but it should allow considerable simplification of the internal bookkeeping
for deletions.  Also, add flag columns to pg_am to eliminate various
hardcoded tests on AM OIDs, and remove unused pg_am columns.

Fix rtree and gist index types to not attempt to store NULLs; before this,
gist usually crashed, while rtree managed not to crash but computed wacko
bounding boxes for NULL entries (which might have had something to do with
the performance problems we've heard about occasionally).

Add AtEOXact routines to hash, rtree, and gist, all of which have static
state that needs to be reset after an error.  We discovered this need long
ago for btree, but missed the other guys.

Oh, one more thing: concurrent VACUUM is now the default.

Tom Lane c9499e68da has_table_privilege functions from Joe Conway (with some kibitzing from
Tom Lane).  For the moment, only the OID/name variants are provided.
I didn't force initdb, but the additions to the 'privileges' regress
test won't pass until you do one.

Tom Lane 1d584f97b9 Clean up various to-do items associated with system indexes:
pg_database now has unique indexes on oid and on datname.
pg_shadow now has unique indexes on usename and on usesysid.
pg_am now has unique index on oid.
pg_opclass now has unique index on oid.
pg_amproc now has unique index on amid+amopclaid+amprocnum.
Remove pg_rewrite's unnecessary index on oid, delete unused RULEOID syscache.
Remove index on pg_listener and associated syscache for performance reasons
(caching rows that are certain to change before you need 'em again is
rather pointless).
Change pg_attrdef's nonunique index on adrelid into a unique index on
adrelid+adnum.

Fix various incorrect settings of pg_class.relisshared, make that the
primary reference point for whether a relation is shared or not.
IsSharedSystemRelationName() is now only consulted to initialize relisshared
during initial creation of tables and indexes.  In theory we might now
support shared user relations, though it's not clear how one would get
entries for them into pg_class &etc of multiple databases.

Fix recently reported bug that pg_attribute rows created for an index all have
the same OID.  (Proof that non-unique OID doesn't matter unless it's
actually used to do lookups ;-))

There's no need to treat pg_trigger, pg_attrdef, pg_relcheck as bootstrap
relations.  Convert them into plain system catalogs without hardwired
entries in pg_class and friends.

Unify global.bki and template1.bki into a single init script postgres.bki,
since the alleged distinction between them was misleading and pointless.
Not to mention that it didn't work for setting up indexes on shared
system relations.

Rationalize locking of pg_shadow, pg_group, pg_attrdef (no need to use
AccessExclusiveLock where ExclusiveLock or even RowExclusiveLock will do).
Also, hold locks until transaction commit where necessary.

patches backend/commands/command.c and the latter is a patch
to the alter table regression test.

Bruce Momjian 36546c98b5 Attached is my patch that adds DROP CONSTRAINT support to PostgreSQL. I
basically want your guys feedback.  I have sprinkled some of my q's thru
the text delimited with the @@ symbol.  It seems to work perfectly.

[ Removed @@ comments because patch was reviewed. ]

At the moment it does CHECK constraints only, with inheritance.  However,
due to the problem mentioned before with the mismatching between inherited
constraints it may be wise to disable the inheritance feature for a while.
it is written in an extensible fashion to support future dropping of other
types of constraint, and is well documented.

Please send me your comments, check my use of locking, updating of
indices, use of ERROR and NOTICE, etc. and I will rework the patch based
on feedback until everyone
is happy with it...

Jan Wieck d27f363e3f Enhancement of SPI to get access to portals
- New functions to create a portal using a prepared/saved
  SPI plan or lookup an existing portal by name.
- Functions to fetch/move from/in portals. Results are placed
  in the usual SPI_processed and SPI_tuptable, so the entire
  set of utility functions can be used to gain attribute access.
- Prepared/saved SPI plans now use their own memory context
  and SPI_freeplan(plan) can remove them.
- Tuple result sets (SPI_tuptable) now uses it's own memory
  context and can be free'd by SPI_freetuptable(tuptab).

Enhancement of PL/pgSQL

- Uses generic named portals internally in FOR ... SELECT
  loops to avoid running out of memory on huge result sets.
- Support for CURSOR and REFCURSOR syntax using the new SPI
  functionality. Cursors used internally only need no explicit
  transaction block. Refcursor variables can be used inside
  of explicit transaction block to pass cursors between main
  application and functions.

Bruce Momjian 8678929c22 This patch should catch cases where the types

Tom Lane f905d65ee3 Rewrite of planner statistics-gathering code. ANALYZE is now available as
a separate statement (though it can still be invoked as part of VACUUM, too).
pg_statistic redesigned to be more flexible about what statistics are
stored.  ANALYZE now collects a list of several of the most common values,
not just one, plus a histogram (not just the min and max values).  Random
sampling is used to make the process reasonably fast even on very large
tables.  The number of values and histogram bins collected is now
user-settable via an ALTER TABLE command.

There is more still to do; the new stats are not being used everywhere
they could be in the planner.  But the remaining changes for this project
should be localized, and the behavior is already better than before.

A not-very-related change is that sorting now makes use of btree comparison
routines if it can find one, rather than invoking '<' twice.

Tom Lane 778a21ca94 Tweak portal (cursor) code so that it will not call the executor again
when user does another FETCH after reaching end of data, or another
FETCH backwards after reaching start.  This is needed because some plan
nodes are not very robust about being called again after they've already
returned NULL; for example, MergeJoin will crash in some states but not
others.  While the ideal approach would be for them all to handle this
correctly, it seems foolish to assume that no such bugs would creep in
again once cleaned up.  Therefore, the most robust answer is to prevent
the situation from arising at all.

Tom Lane 4a66f9dd54 Change scoping of table and join refnames to conform to SQL92: a JOIN
clause with an alias is a <subquery> and therefore hides table references
appearing within it, according to the spec.  This is the same as the
preliminary patch I posted to pgsql-patches yesterday, plus some really
grotty code in ruleutils.c to reverse-list a query tree with the correct
alias name depending on context.  I'd rather not have done that, but unless
we want to force another initdb for 7.1, there's no other way for now.

Tom Lane 0d54d6ac44 Clean up handling of tuple descriptors so that result-tuple descriptors
allocated by plan nodes are not leaked at end of query.  This doesn't
really matter for normal queries, but it sure does for queries invoked
repetitively inside SQL functions.  Clean up some other grotty code
associated with tupdescs, and fix a few other memory leaks exposed by
tests with simple SQL functions.

Tom Lane 786f1a59cd Fix all the places that called heap_update() and heap_delete() without
bothering to check the return value --- which meant that in case the
update or delete failed because of a concurrent update, you'd not find
out about it, except by observing later that the transaction produced
the wrong outcome.  There are now subroutines simple_heap_update and
simple_heap_delete that should be used anyplace that you're not prepared
to do the full nine yards of coping with concurrent updates.  In
practice, that seems to mean absolutely everywhere but the executor,
because *noplace* else was checking.

Tom Lane 1402201463 Clean up checking of relkind for ALTER TABLE and LOCK TABLE commands.
Disallow cases like adding constraints to sequences :-(, and eliminate
now-unnecessary search of pg_rewrite to decide if a relation is a view.

Tom Lane 90f42847b5 Small cleanup of temp-table handling. Disallow creation of a non-temp
table that inherits from a temp table.  Make sure the right things happen
if one creates a temp table, creates another temp that inherits from it,
then renames the first one.  (Previously, system would end up trying to
delete the temp tables in the wrong order.)

I believe this should fix the issue that Philip Warner
noticed about the check for unique constraints meeting the
referenced keys of a foreign key constraint allowing the
specification of a subset of a foreign key instead of
rejecting it.  I also added tests for a base case of
this to the foreign key and alter table tests and patches
for expected output.

Tom Lane a933ee38bb Change SearchSysCache coding conventions so that a reference count is
maintained for each cache entry.  A cache entry will not be freed until
the matching ReleaseSysCache call has been executed.  This eliminates
worries about cache entries getting dropped while still in use.  See
my posting to pg-hackers of even date for more info.

Tom Lane 6543d81d65 Restructure handling of inheritance queries so that they work with outer
joins, and clean things up a good deal at the same time.  Append plan node
no longer hacks on rangetable at runtime --- instead, all child tables are
given their own RT entries during planning.  Concept of multiple target
tables pushed up into execMain, replacing bug-prone implementation within
nodeAppend.  Planner now supports generating Append plans for inheritance
sets either at the top of the plan (the old way) or at the bottom.  Expanding
at the bottom is appropriate for tables used as sources, since they may
appear inside an outer join; but we must still expand at the top when the
target of an UPDATE or DELETE is an inheritance set, because we actually need
a different targetlist and junkfilter for each target table in that case.
Fortunately a target table can't be inside an outer join...  Bizarre mutual
recursion between union_planner and prepunion.c is gone --- in fact,
union_planner doesn't really have much to do with union queries anymore,
so I renamed it grouping_planner.

Tom Lane 3908473c80 Make DROP TABLE rollback-able: postpone physical file delete until commit.
(WAL logging for this is not done yet, however.)  Clean up a number of really
crufty things that are no longer needed now that DROP behaves nicely.  Make
temp table mapper do the right things when drop or rename affecting a temp
table is rolled back.  Also, remove "relation modified while in use" error
check, in favor of locking tables at first reference and holding that lock
throughout the statement.

Tom Lane 2f35b4efdb Re-implement LIMIT/OFFSET as a plan node type, instead of a hack in
ExecutorRun.  This allows LIMIT to work in a view.  Also, LIMIT in a
cursor declaration will behave in a reasonable fashion, whereas before
it was overridden by the FETCH count.

Bruce Momjian e7b069ced1 This is a stupid garden variety bug and I'm not sure why I didn't catch
it previously.  The patch included is against fairly current sources, but
it may apply cleanly against 7.0.2 as well.

Tom Lane 3a94e789f5 Subselects in FROM clause, per ISO syntax: FROM (SELECT ...) [AS] alias.
(Don't forget that an alias is required.)  Views reimplemented as expanding
to subselect-in-FROM.  Grouping, aggregates, DISTINCT in views actually
work now (he says optimistically).  No UNION support in subselects/views
yet, but I have some ideas about that.  Rule-related permissions checking
moved out of rewriter and into executor.

Tom Lane ed5003c584 First cut at full support for OUTER JOINs. There are still a few loose

Bruce Momjian 264c068207 This patch implements a different "relkind"
for views. Views are now have a "relkind" of
RELKIND_VIEW instead of RELKIND_RELATION.

Also, views no longer have actual heap storage
files.

The following changes were made

1. CREATE VIEW sets the new relkind

2. The executor complains if a DELETE or
        INSERT references a view.

3. DROP RULE complains if an attempt is made
        to delete a view SELECT rule.

4. CREATE RULE "_RETmytable" AS ON SELECT TO mytable DO INSTEAD ...
        1. checks to make sure mytable is empty.
        2. sets the relkind to RELKIND_VIEW.
        3. deletes the heap storage files.
5. LOCK myview is not allowed. :)


6. the regression test type_sanity was changed to
        account for the new relkind value.

7. CREATE INDEX ON myview ... is not allowed.

8. VACUUM myview is not allowed.
        VACUUM automatically skips views when do the entire
        database.

9. TRUNCATE myview is not allowed.

Peter Eisentraut 6dc249610a Code cleanup of user name and user id handling in the backend. The current
user is now defined in terms of the user id, the user name is only computed
upon request (for display purposes). This is kind of the opposite of the
previous state, which would maintain the user name and compute the user id
for permission checks.

Besides perhaps saving a few cycles (integer vs string), this now creates a
single point of attack for changing the user id during a connection, for
purposes of "setuid" functions, etc.

Bruce Momjian d4f626507c This is mostly the same as an earlier patch I
didn't hear anything about, but which would
have broken with the function manager changes
anyway.

Well, this patch checks that a unique constraint
of some form (unique or pk) is on the referenced
columns of an FK constraint and that the columns
in the referencing table exist at creation time.
The former is to move closer to SQL compatibility
and the latter is in answer to a bug report.
I also added a basic check of this functionality
to the alter table and foreign key regression
tests.

Tom Lane 3d3ca010aa Avoid creating a TOAST table if we can prove that the maximum tuple
length is < TOAST_TUPLE_THRESHOLD, even with toastable column types
present.  For example, CREATE TABLE foo (f1 int, f2 varchar(100))
does not require a toast table, even though varchar is a toastable
type.

Tom Lane e67ff6b670 fmgr interface mopup work. Use new DatumGetBool and BoolGetDatum
macros where appropriate (the code used to have several different ways
of doing that, including Int32, Int8, UInt8, ...).  Remove last few
references to float32 and float64 typedefs --- it's all float4/float8
now.  The typedefs themselves should probably stay in c.h for a release
or two, though, to avoid breaking user-written C functions.

Tom Lane dd8ad64118 Fix tuptoaster bugs induced by making bytea toastable. Durn thing was
trying to toast tuples inserted into toast tables!  Fix is two-pronged:
first, ensure all columns of a toast table are marked attstorage='p',
and second, alter the target chunk size so that it's less than the
threshold for trying to toast a tuple.  (Code tried to do that but the
expression was wrong.)  A few cosmetic cleanups in tuptoaster too.
NOTE: initdb forced due to change in toaster chunk-size.

Tom Lane 61aca818c4 Modify heap_open()/heap_openr() API per pghackers discussion of 11 July.
These two routines will now ALWAYS elog() on failure, whether you ask for
a lock or not.  If you really want to get a NULL return on failure, call
the new routines heap_open_nofail()/heap_openr_nofail().  By my count there
are only about three places that actually want that behavior.  There were
rather more than three places that were missing the check they needed to
make under the old convention :-(.

foreign keys and refuse them and that it doesn't allow the table(s)
being constrained to be views (because those cases don't currently
work).
