Tom Lane 1c72d82c25 Allow use of __sync_lock_test_and_set for spinlocks on any machine.
If we have no special-case code in s_lock.h for the current platform,
but the compiler has __sync_lock_test_and_set, use that instead of
failing.  It's unlikely that anybody's __sync_lock_test_and_set
would be so awful as to be worse than our semaphore-based fallback,
but if it is, they can (continue to) use --disable-spinlocks.

This allows removal of the RISC-V special case installed by commit
c32fcac56, which generated exactly the same code but only on that
platform.  Usefully, the RISC-V buildfarm animals should now test
at least the int variant of this patch.

I've manually tested both variants on ARM by dint of removing the
ARM-specific stanza.  We don't want to drop that, because it already
has some special knowledge and is likely to grow more over time.
Likewise, this is not meant to preclude installing special cases
for other arches if that proves worthwhile.

Per discussion of a request to install the same code for loongarch64.
Like the previous patch, we might as well back-patch to supported
branches.

that spot.

John Naylor 4112e39f70 Remove unused symbol __aarch64
This was added as a possible variant of __aarch64__ back when 64-bit
ARM was vaporware. It hasn't shown up in the wild since then, so remove.

Tom Lane 8ded65682b Remove configurability of PPC spinlock assembly code.
Assume that we can use LWARX hint flags and the LWSYNC instruction
on any PPC machine.  The check on the assembler's behavior was only
needed for Apple's old assembler, which is no longer of interest
now that we've de-supported all PPC-era versions of macOS (thanks
to them not having clock_gettime()).  Also, given an up-to-date
assembler these instructions work even on Apple's old hardware.
It seems quite unlikely that anyone would be interested in running
current Postgres on PPC hardware that's so old as to not have
these instructions.

Hence, rip out associated configure test and manual configuration
options, and just use the modernized instructions all the time.
Also, update atomics/arch-ppc.h to use these instructions as well.
(It was already using LWSYNC unconditionally in another place,
providing further proof that nobody is using PG on hardware old
enough to have a problem with that.)

Andres Freund 320f92b744 Rely on __func__ being supported
Previously we fell back to __FUNCTION__ and then NULL. As __func__ is in C99
that shouldn't be necessary anymore.

Solution.pm defined HAVE_FUNCNAME__FUNCTION instead of
HAVE_FUNCNAME__FUNC (originating in 4164e6636e), as at some point in the past
MSVC only supported __FUNCTION__. Our minimum version supports __func__.

Thomas Munro 718aa43a4e Further tidy-up for old CPU architectures.
Further to commit 92d70b77, let's drop the code we carry for the
following untested architectures: M68K, M88K, M32R, SuperH.  We have no
idea if anything actually works there, and surely as vintage hardware
and microcontrollers they would be underpowered for modern purposes.

We could always consider re-adding SuperH based on evidence of usage and
build farm support, if someone shows up to provide it.

While here, SPARC is usually written in all caps.

Thomas Munro 92d70b77eb Tidy up claimed supported CPUs and OSes.
* Remove arbitrary mention of certain endianness and bitness variants;
   it's enough to say that applicable variants are expected to work.
 * List RISC-V (known to work, being tested).
 * List SuperH and M88K (code exists, unknown status, like M68K).
 * De-list VAX and remove code (known not to work).
 * Remove stray trace of Alpha (support was removed years ago).
 * List illumos, DragonFlyBSD (known to work, being tested).
 * No need to single Windows out by listing a specific version, when we
   don't do that for other OSes; it's enough to say that we support
   current versions of the listed OSes (when 16 ships, that'll be
   Windows 10+).

Thomas Munro 0ad5b48e58 Remove HP/Intel Itanium support.
This CPU architecture has been discontinued.  We already removed HP-UX
support, we never supported Windows/Itanium, and the open source
operating systems that a vintage hardware owner might hope to run have
all either ended Itanium support or never fully released support (NetBSD
may eventually).  The extra code we carry for this rare ISA is now
untested.  It seems like a good time to remove it.

Thomas Munro 9db300ce6e Remove HP-UX port.
HP-UX hardware is no longer produced, build farm coverage recently
ended, and there are no known active maintainers targeting this OS.
Since there is a major rewrite of the build system in the pipeline for
PostgreSQL 16, and that requires development, testing and maintainance
for each OS and tool chain, it seems like a good time to drop support
for:

 * HP-UX, the operating system.
 * HP aCC, the HP-UX native compiler.

Robert Haas 8ec569479f Apply PGDLLIMPORT markings broadly.
Up until now, we've had a policy of only marking certain variables
in the PostgreSQL header files with PGDLLIMPORT, but now we've
decided to mark them all. This means that extensions running on
Windows should no longer operate at a disadvantage as compared to
extensions running on Linux: if the variable is present in a header
file, it should be accessible.

Tom Lane a82a5eee31 Use ISB as a spin-delay instruction on ARM64.
This seems beneficial on high-core-count machines, and not harmful
on lesser hardware.  However, older ARM32 gear doesn't have this
instruction, so restrict the patch to ARM64.

Tom Lane c32fcac56a Add RISC-V spinlock support in s_lock.h.
Like the ARM case, just use gcc's __sync_lock_test_and_set();
that will compile into AMOSWAP.W.AQ which does what we need.

At some point it might be worth doing some work on atomic ops
for RISC-V, but this should be enough for a creditable port.

Back-patch to all supported branches, just in case somebody
wants to try them on RISC-V.

Noah Misch 89b4d7744c For PowerPC instruction "addi", use constraint "b".
Without "b", a variant of the tas() code miscompiles on macOS 10.4.
This may also fix a compilation failure involving macOS 10.1.  Today's
compilers have been allocating acceptable registers with or without this
change, but this future-proofs the code by precisely conveying the
acceptable registers.  Back-patch to 9.4 (all supported versions).

Tom Lane 1323bfce55 Fix spinlock assembly code for MIPS so it works on MIPS r6.
Original MIPS-I processors didn't have the LL/SC instructions (nor any
other userland synchronization primitive).  If the build toolchain
targets that ISA variant by default, as an astonishingly large fraction
of MIPS platforms still do, the assembler won't take LL/SC without
coercion in the form of a ".set mips2" instruction.  But we issued that
unconditionally, making it an ISA downgrade for chips later than MIPS2.
That breaks things for the latest MIPS r6 ISA, which encodes these
instructions differently.  Adjust the code so we don't change ISA level
if it's >= 2.

Note that this patch doesn't change what happens on an actual MIPS-I
processor: either the kernel will emulate these instructions
transparently, or you'll get a SIGILL failure.  That tradeoff seemed
fine in 2002 when this code was added (cf 3cbe6b247), and it's even
more so today when MIPS-I is basically extinct.  But let's add a
comment about that.

Peter Eisentraut 2eb4a831e5 Change TRUE/FALSE to true/false
The lower case spellings are C and C++ standard and are used in most
parts of the PostgreSQL sources.  The upper case spellings are only used
in some files/modules.  So standardize on the standard spellings.

The APIs for ICU, Perl, and Windows define their own TRUE and FALSE, so
those are left as is when using those APIs.

In code comments, we use the lower-case spelling for the C concepts and
keep the upper-case spelling for the SQL concepts.

Magnus Hagander a4777f3556 Remove symbol WIN32_ONLY_COMPILER
This used to mean "Visual C++ except in those parts where Borland C++
was supported where it meant one of those". Now that we don't support
Borland C++ anymore, simplify by using _MSC_VER which is the normal way
to detect Visual C++.

Tom Lane 2b860f52ed Remove "sco" and "unixware" ports.
SCO OpenServer and SCO UnixWare are more or less dead platforms.
We have never had a buildfarm member testing the "sco" port, and
the last "unixware" member was last heard from in 2012, so it's
fair to doubt that the code even compiles anymore on either one.
Remove both ports.  We can always undo this if someone shows up
with an interest in maintaining and testing these platforms.

Andres Freund 4b74c6a40e Make init_spin_delay() C89 compliant #2.
My previous attempt at doing so, in 80abbeba23, was not sufficient. While that
fixed the problem for bufmgr.c and lwlock.c , s_lock.c still has non-constant
expressions in the struct initializer, because the file/line/function
information comes from the caller of s_lock().

Give up on using a macro, and use a static inline instead.

Andres Freund 80abbeba23 Make init_spin_delay() C89 compliant and change stuck spinlock reporting.
The current definition of init_spin_delay (introduced recently in
48354581a) wasn't C89 compliant. It's not legal to refer to refer to
non-constant expressions, and the ptr argument was one.  This, as
reported by Tom, lead to a failure on buildfarm animal pademelon.

The pointer, especially on system systems with ASLR, isn't super helpful
anyway, though. So instead of making init_spin_delay into an inline
function, make s_lock_stuck() report the function name in addition to
file:line and change init_spin_delay() accordingly. While not a direct
replacement, the function name is likely more useful anyway (line
numbers are often hard to interpret in third party reports).

This also fixes what file/line number is reported for waits via
s_lock().

As PG_FUNCNAME_MACRO is now used outside of elog.h, move it to c.h.

Andres Freund 48354581a4 Allow Pin/UnpinBuffer to operate in a lockfree manner.
Pinning/Unpinning a buffer is a very frequent operation; especially in
read-mostly cache resident workloads. Benchmarking shows that in various
scenarios the spinlock protecting a buffer header's state becomes a
significant bottleneck. The problem can be reproduced with pgbench -S on
larger machines, but can be considerably worse for queries which touch
the same buffers over and over at a high frequency (e.g. nested loops
over a small inner table).

To allow atomic operations to be used, cram BufferDesc's flags,
usage_count, buf_hdr_lock, refcount into a single 32bit atomic variable;
that allows to manipulate them together using 32bit compare-and-swap
operations. This requires reducing MAX_BACKENDS to 2^18-1 (which could
be lifted by using a 64bit field, but it's not a realistic configuration
atm).

As not all operations can easily implemented in a lockfree manner,
implement the previous buf_hdr_lock via a flag bit in the atomic
variable. That way we can continue to lock the header in places where
it's needed, but can get away without acquiring it in the more frequent
hot-paths.  There's some additional operations which can be done without
the lock, but aren't in this patch; but the most important places are
covered.

As bufmgr.c now essentially re-implements spinlocks, abstract the delay
logic from s_lock.c into something more generic. It now has already two
users, and more are coming up; there's a follupw patch for lwlock.c at
least.

This patch is based on a proof-of-concept written by me, which Alexander
Korotkov made into a fully working patch; the committed version is again
revised by me.  Benchmarking and testing has, amongst others, been
provided by Dilip Kumar, Alexander Korotkov, Robert Haas.

On a large x86 system improvements for readonly pgbench, with a high
client count, of a factor of 8 have been observed.

Tom Lane 123c9d2fc1 Clean up icc + ia64 situation.
Some googling turned up multiple sources saying that older versions of icc
do not accept gcc-compatible asm blocks on IA64, though asm does work on
x86[_64].  This is apparently fixed as of icc version 12.0 or so, but that
doesn't help us much; if we have to carry the extra implementation anyway,
we may as well just use it for icc rather than add a compiler version test.

Hence, revert commit 2c713d6ea2 (though I
separated the icc code from the gcc code completely, producing what seems
cleaner code).  Document the state of affairs more explicitly, both in
s_lock.h and postgres.c, and make some cosmetic adjustments around the
IA64 code in s_lock.h.

Tom Lane c41a1215f0 Fix s_lock.h PPC assembly code to be compatible with native AIX assembler.
On recent AIX it's necessary to configure gcc to use the native assembler
(because the GNU assembler hasn't been updated to handle AIX 6+).  This
caused PG builds to fail with assembler syntax errors, because we'd try
to compile s_lock.h's gcc asm fragment for PPC, and that assembly code
relied on GNU-style local labels.  We can't substitute normal labels
because it would fail in any file containing more than one inlined use of
tas().  Fortunately, that code is stable enough, and the PPC ISA is simple
enough, that it doesn't seem like too much of a maintenance burden to just
hand-code the branch offsets, removing the need for any labels.

Note that the AIX assembler only accepts "$" for the location counter
pseudo-symbol.  The usual GNU convention is "."; but it appears that all
versions of gas for PPC also accept "$", so in theory this patch will not
break any other PPC platforms.

This has been reported by a few people, but Steve Underwood gets the credit
for being the first to pursue the problem far enough to understand why it
was failing.  Thanks also to Noah Misch for additional testing.

Andres Freund 4eda0a6470 Don't include low level locking code from frontend code.
Some frontend code like e.g. pg_xlogdump or pg_resetxlog, has to use
backend headers. Unfortunately until now that code includes most of the
locking code. It's generally not nice to expose such low level details,
but de6fd1c898 made that a hard problem. We fall back to defining
'inline' away if the compiler doesn't support it - that can cause linker
errors like on buildfarm animal pademelon if a inline function
references backend only code.

To fix that problem separate definitions from lock.h that are required
from frontend code into lockdefs.h and use it in the relevant
places. I've only removed the minimal amount of necessary definitions
for now - it might turn out that we want more for other reasons.

To avoid such details being exposed again put some checks against being
included from frontend code into atomics.h, lock.h, lwlock.h and
s_lock.h. It's otherwise fairly easy to indirectly include these
headers.

Andres Freund 07cb8b02ab Replace ia64 S_UNLOCK compiler barrier with a full memory barrier.
_Asm_sched_fence() is just a compiler barrier, not a memory barrier. But
spinlock release on IA64 needs, at the very least, release
semantics. Use a full barrier instead.

This might be the cause for the occasional failures on buildfarm member
anole.

Andres Freund 6cfd5086e1 Blindly try to fix a warning in s_lock.h when compiling with gcc on HPPA.
The possibly, depending on compiler settings, generated warning was
"warning: `S_UNLOCK' redefined".

The hppa spinlock implementation doesn't follow the rules of s_lock.h
and provides a gcc specific implementation outside of the the part of
the file that's supposed to do that.  It does so to avoid duplication
between the HP compiler and gcc. That unfortunately means that
S_UNLOCK is already defined when the HPPA specific section is reached.

Undefine the generic fallback S_UNLOCK definition inside the HPPA
section. That's far from pretty, but has the big advantage of being
simple. If somebody is interested to fix this in a prettier way...

This presumably got broken in the course of 0709b7ee72.

Andres Freund b64d92f1a5 Add a basic atomic ops API abstracting away platform/architecture details.
Several upcoming performance/scalability improvements require atomic
operations. This new API avoids the need to splatter compiler and
architecture dependent code over all the locations employing atomic
ops.

For several of the potential usages it'd be problematic to maintain
both, a atomics using implementation and one using spinlocks or
similar. In all likelihood one of the implementations would not get
tested regularly under concurrency. To avoid that scenario the new API
provides a automatic fallback of atomic operations to spinlocks. All
properties of atomic operations are maintained. This fallback -
obviously - isn't as fast as just using atomic ops, but it's not bad
either. For one of the future users the atomics ontop spinlocks
implementation was actually slightly faster than the old purely
spinlock using implementation. That's important because it reduces the
fear of regressing older platforms when improving the scalability for
new ones.

The API, loosely modeled after the C11 atomics support, currently
provides 'atomic flags' and 32 bit unsigned integers. If the platform
efficiently supports atomic 64 bit unsigned integers those are also
provided.

To implement atomics support for a platform/architecture/compiler for
a type of atomics 32bit compare and exchange needs to be
implemented. If available and more efficient native support for flags,
32 bit atomic addition, and corresponding 64 bit operations may also
be provided. Additional useful atomic operations are implemented
generically ontop of these.

The implementation for various versions of gcc, msvc and sun studio have

* IBM xlc
are included but have never been tested. These will likely require
fixes based on buildfarm and user feedback.

As atomic operations also require barriers for some operations the
existing barrier support has been moved into the atomics code.
