Andres Freund pointed out that allowing non-superusers to run "CREATE EXTENSION ... FROM unpackaged" has security risks, since the unpackaged-to-1.0 scripts don't try to verify that the existing objects they're modifying are what they expect. Just attaching such objects to an extension doesn't seem too dangerous, but some of them do more than that. We could have resolved this, perhaps, by still requiring superuser privilege to use the FROM option. However, it's fair to ask just what we're accomplishing by continuing to lug the unpackaged-to-1.0 scripts forward. None of them have received any real testing since 9.1 days, so they may not even work anymore (even assuming that one could still load the previous "loose" object definitions into a v13 database). And an installation that's trying to go from pre-9.1 to v13 or later in one jump is going to have worse compatibility problems than whether there's a trivial way to convert their contrib modules into extension style. The PostgreSQL contrib tree
---------------------------
This subtree contains porting tools, analysis utilities, and plug-in
features that are not part of the core PostgreSQL system, mainly
because they address a limited audience or are too experimental to be
part of the main source tree. This does not preclude their
usefulness.
User documentation for each module appears in the main SGML
documentation.
When building from the source distribution, these modules are not
built automatically, unless you build the "world" target. You can
also build and install them all by running "make all" and "make
install" in this directory; or to build and install just one selected
module, do the same in that module's subdirectory.
Some directories supply new user-defined functions, operators, or
types. To make use of one of these modules, after you have installed
the code you need to register the new SQL objects in the database
system by executing a CREATE EXTENSION command. In a fresh database,
you can simply do
CREATE EXTENSION module_name;
