GUC support. It's now possible to set datestyle, timezone, and
client_encoding from postgresql.conf and per-database or per-user
settings. Also, implement rollback of SET commands that occur in a
transaction that later fails. Create a SET LOCAL var = value syntax
that sets the variable only for the duration of the current transaction.
All per previous discussions in pghackers.
As proof of concept, provide an alternate implementation based on POSIX
semaphores. Also push the SysV shared-memory implementation into a
separate file so that it can be replaced conveniently.

Bootstrap mode now has a -d that requires an argument, like postmaster

per suggestion from Peter. Simplify several APIs by transmitting the
original argv location directly from main.c to ps_status.c, instead of
passing it down through several levels of subroutines.
existing lock manager and spinlocks: it understands exclusive vs shared
lock but has few other fancy features. Replace most uses of spinlocks
with lightweight locks. All remaining uses of spinlocks have very short
lock hold times (a few dozen instructions), so tweak spinlock backoff
code to work efficiently given this assumption. All per my proposal on
pghackers 26-Sep-01.
Assign the fixed user id 1 to the user created by initdb.
A stand-alone backend will always set the user id to 1.
(Consequently, the name of that user is no longer important.)
In stand-alone mode, the user id 1 will have implicit superuser
status, to allow repairs even if there are no users defined.
Print a warning message when starting in stand-alone mode when no
users are defined.
Disallow dropping the current user and session user.
Granting/revoking superuser status also grants/revokes usecatupd.
(Previously, it would never grant it back. This could lead to "deadlocks".)
CREATE USER and CREATE GROUP will start allocating user ids at 100
(unless explicitly specified), to prevent accidental creation of a
superuser (plus some room for future extensions).

Make sure it exits immediately when collector process dies --- in old code,
buffer process would hang around and compete with the new buffer process
for packets. Make sure it doesn't block on writing the pipe when the
collector falls more than a pipeload behind. Avoid leaking pgstats FDs
into every backend.
Cygwin with the possible exception of mSQL-interface. Since I don't
have mSQL installed, I skipped this tool.
Except for dealing with a missing getopt.h (oid2name) and HUGE (seg),
the bulk of the patch uses the standard PostgreSQL approach to deal with
Windows DLL issues.
I tested the build aspect of this patch under Cygwin and Linux without
any ill affects. Note that I did not actually attempt to test the code
for functionality.
The procedure to apply the patch is as follows:

since they don't really belong to his database). This is per recent
mailing list discussion. Clean up some other code that also checks
for database ownerness by introducing a test function is_dbadmin().
* Store two past checkpoint locations, not just one, in pg_control.
On startup, we fall back to the older checkpoint if the newer one
is unreadable. Also, a physical copy of the newest checkpoint record
is kept in pg_control for possible use in disaster recovery (ie,
complete loss of pg_xlog). Also add a version number for pg_control
itself. Remove archdir from pg_control; it ought to be a GUC
parameter, not a special case (not that it's implemented yet anyway).
* Suppress successive checkpoint records when nothing has been entered
in the WAL log since the last one. This is not so much to avoid I/O
as to make it actually useful to keep track of the last two
checkpoints. If the things are right next to each other then there's
not a lot of redundancy gained...
* Change CRC scheme to a true 64-bit CRC, not a pair of 32-bit CRCs
on alternate bytes. Polynomial borrowed from ECMA DLT1 standard.
* Fix XLOG record length handling so that it will work at BLCKSZ = 32k.
* Change XID allocation to work more like OID allocation. (This is of
dubious necessity, but I think it's a good idea anyway.)
* Fix a number of minor bugs, such as off-by-one logic for XLOG file
wraparound at the 4 gig mark.
* Add documentation and clean up some coding infelicities; move file
format declarations out to include files where planned contrib
utilities can get at them.
* Checkpoint will now occur every CHECKPOINT_SEGMENTS log segments or

possible to force a checkpoint by sending SIGUSR1 to the postmaster

* Defend against kill -9 postmaster by storing shmem block's key and ID
in postmaster.pid lockfile, and checking at startup to ensure that no
processes are still connected to old shmem block (if it still exists).
* Switch backends to accept SIGQUIT rather than SIGUSR1 for emergency
stop, for symmetry with postmaster and xlog utilities. Clean up signal
handling in bootstrap.c so that xlog utilities launched by postmaster
will react to signals better.
* Standalone bootstrap now grabs lockfile in target directory, as added
insurance against running it in parallel with live postmaster.

develop server-side code without keeping the complete source tree on hand.

going to reject a connection request based on database state, it will now
tell you so before authentication exchange not after. (Of course, a failure

that search loops only have to scan that far and not through all maxBackends
entries. This eliminates a performance penalty for setting maxBackends
much higher than the average number of active backends. Also, eliminate
no-longer-used 'backend tag' concept. Remove setting of environment
variables at backend start (except for CYR_RECODE), since none of them
are being examined by the backend any longer.
There is still no effective difference but it will kick in once setuid
functions exist (not included here). Make old getpgusername() alias for
current_user.
user is now defined in terms of the user id, the user name is only computed
upon request (for display purposes). This is kind of the opposite of the
previous state, which would maintain the user name and compute the user id
for permission checks.
Besides perhaps saving a few cycles (integer vs string), this now creates a
single point of attack for changing the user id during a connection, for
purposes of "setuid" functions, etc.
* Add option to build with OpenSSL out of the box. Fix thusly exposed
bit rot. Although it compiles now, getting this to do something
useful is left as an exercise.
* Fix Kerberos options to defer checking for required libraries until
all the other libraries are checked for.
* Change default odbcinst.ini and krb5.srvtab path to PREFIX/etc.

Scrapped pg_version and changed initdb accordingly. Integrated
src/utils/version.c into src/backend/utils/init/miscinit.c. Changed all
callers.
Set version number to `7.1devel'. (Non-numeric version suffixes now allowed.)
for details). It doesn't really do that much yet, since there are no
short-term memory contexts in the executor, but the infrastructure is
in place and long-term contexts are handled reasonably. A few long-
standing bugs have been fixed, such as 'VACUUM; anything' in a single
query string crashing. Also, out-of-memory is now considered a
recoverable ERROR, not FATAL.
Eliminate a large amount of crufty, now-dead code in and around
memory management.
Fix problem with holding off SIGTRAP, SIGSEGV, etc in postmaster and
backend startup.
That means you can now set your options in either or all of $PGDATA/configuration,
some postmaster option (--enable-fsync=off), or set a SET command. The list of
options is in backend/utils/misc/guc.c, documentation will be written post haste.
pg_options is gone, so is that pq_geqo config file. Also removed were backend -K,
-Q, and -T options (no longer applicable, although -d0 does the same as -Q).
Added to configure an --enable-syslog option.
changed all callers from TPRINTF to elog(DEBUG)
to 10, and be consistent about whether it counts the trailing null (it
does not). Also increase MAXDATELEN to be sure no buffer overflows are
caused by the longer MAXTZLEN.
2. Regression tests fail for types int2 and int4 (which can easily be
fixed by adding entries to resultmap) aswell as float8 and geometry,
where floating point numbers appear to be rounded a little differently
than in your expected results (besides that I also need the positive
zeros file). I'm including a patch for the first 2, but I don't know
whether the latter two are actually a bug in postgres or a bug in the
OS or even allowed difference. I'm including my results for reference.

* Buffer refcount cleanup (per my "progress report" to pghackers, 9/22).
* Add links to backend PROC structs to sinval's array of per-backend info,
and use these links for routines that need to check the state of all
backends (rather than the slow, complicated search of the ShmemIndex
hashtable that was used before). Add databaseOID to PROC structs.
* Use this to implement an interlock that prevents DESTROY DATABASE of
a database containing running backends. (It's a little tricky to prevent
a concurrently-starting backend from getting in there, since the new
backend is not able to lock anything at the time it tries to look up
its database in pg_database. My solution is to recheck that the DB is
OK at the end of InitPostgres. It may not be a 100% solution, but it's
a lot better than no interlock at all...)
* In ALTER TABLE RENAME, flush buffers for the relation before doing the
rename of the physical files, to ensure we don't get failures later from
mdblindwrt().
* Update TRUNCATE patch so that it actually compiles against current
sources :-(.

varchar-array.patch this patch adds support for arrays of bpchar() and
varchar(), which where always missing from postgres.
These datatypes can be used to replace the _char4,
_char8, etc., which were dropped some time ago.
block-size.patch this patch fixes many errors in the parser and other
program which happen with very large query statements
(> 8K) when using a page size larger than 8192.
This patch is needed if you want to submit queries
larger than 8K. Postgres supports tuples up to 32K
but you can't insert them because you can't submit
queries larger than 8K. My patch fixes this problem.
The patch also replaces all the occurrences of `8192'
and `1<<13' in the sources with the proper constants
defined in include files. You should now never find
8192 hardwired in C code, just to make code clearer.

As Bruce mentioned, this is due to the conflict among changes we made.
Included patches should fix the problem(I changed all MB to
MULTIBYTE). Please let me know if you have further problem.
P.S. I did not include pathces to configure and gram.c to save the

Attached are patches to enhance the multi-byte support. (patches are
against 7/18 snapshot)

Now initdb/createdb has an option to specify the encoding. Also, I
modified the syntax of CREATE DATABASE to accept encoding option. See
README.mb for more details.
For this purpose I have added new column "encoding" to pg_database.
Also pg_attribute and pg_class are changed to catch up the
modification to pg_database. Actually I haved added pg_database_mb.h,
pg_attribute_mb.h and pg_class_mb.h. These are used only when MB is
enabled. The reason having separate files is I couldn't find a way to
use ifdef or whatever in those files. I have to admit it looks
ugly. No way.

Basic idea is to have MB's own subdirectory for easier maintenance.
These are include/mb and backend/utils/mb.
Making PQrequestCancel safe to call in a signal handler turned out to be
much easier than I feared. So here are the diffs.
Some notes:
* I modified the postmaster's packet "iodone" callback interface to allow
the callback routine to return a continue-or-drop-connection return
code; this was necessary to allow the connection to be closed after
receiving a Cancel, rather than proceeding to launch a new backend...
Being a neatnik, I also made the iodone proc have a typechecked
parameter list.
* I deleted all code I could find that had to do with OOB.
* I made some edits to ensure that all signals mentioned in the code
are referred to symbolically not by numbers ("SIGUSR2" not "2").
I think Bruce may have already done at least some of the same edits;
I hope that merging these patches is not too painful.

and timespan data types as well as to fix reported porting bugs on non-BSD
machines. These patches are:

The dt.c and pg_proc.h patches are fairly large; the latter mostly because I tried
to get some columns for existing entries to line up.

Not all adapted to it yet, but it's a start.
- Rewritten some of those routines, to write/read bigger chunks of
data, precomputing stuff in buffers instead of sending out byte

- As a consequence, I need to know the endianness of the machine.
Currently I rely on getting it from machine/endian.h, but this
may not be available everywhere? (Who the hell thought it was
a good idea to pass integers to the backend the other way around
than the normal network byte order? *argl*)
- Libpq looks in the environment for magic variables, and upon
establishing a connection to the backend, sends it queries
of the form "SET var_name TO 'var_value'". This needs a change
in the backend parser (Mr. Parser, are you there? :)
- Currently it looks for two Env-Vars, namely PG_DATEFORMAT
and PG_FLOATFORMAT. What else makes sense? PG_TIMEFORMAT?
