a2a8c7a662 Support hex-string input and output for type BYTEA.
Both hex format and the traditional "escape" format are automatically
handled on input.  The output format is selected by the new GUC variable
bytea_output.

As committed, bytea_output defaults to HEX, which is an *incompatible
change*.  We will keep it this way for awhile for testing purposes, but
should consider whether to switch to the more backwards-compatible
default of ESCAPE before 8.5 is released.

25d9bf2e3e Support deferrable uniqueness constraints.
The current implementation fires an AFTER ROW trigger for each tuple that
looks like it might be non-unique according to the index contents at the
time of insertion.  This works well as long as there aren't many conflicts,
but won't scale to massive unique-key reassignments.  Improving that case
is a TODO item.

8835d63b27 Experiment with using EXPLAIN COSTS OFF in regression tests.
This is a simple test to see whether COSTS OFF will help much with getting
EXPLAIN output that's sufficiently platform-independent for use in the
regression tests.  The planner does have some freedom of choice in these
examples (plain via bitmap indexscan), so I'm not sure what will happen.

a43b190e3c Fix a thinko in join_is_legal: when we decide we can implement a semijoin
by unique-ifying the RHS and then inner-joining to some other relation,
that is not grounds for violating the RHS of some other outer join.
Noticed while regression-testing new GEQO code, which will blindly follow
any path that join_is_legal says is legal, and then complain later if that
leads to a dead end.

I'm not certain that this can result in any visible failure in 8.4: the
mistake may always be masked by the fact that subsequent attempts to join
the rest of the RHS of the other join will fail.  But I'm not certain it
can't, either, and it's definitely not operating as intended.  So back-patch.

The added regression test depends on the new no-failures-allowed logic
that I'm about to commit in GEQO, so no point back-patching that.

fb18055998 Repair bug #4926 "too few pathkeys for mergeclauses". This example shows
that the sanity checking I added to create_mergejoin_plan() in 8.3 was a
few bricks shy of a load: the mergeclauses could reference pathkeys in a
noncanonical order such as x,y,x, not only cases like x,x,y which is all
that the code had allowed for.  The odd cases only turn up when using
redundant clauses in an outer join condition, which is why no one had
noticed before.

9298d2ff39 Fix handling of changed-Param signaling for CteScan plan nodes. We were using
the "cteParam" as a proxy for the possibility that the underlying CTE plan
depends on outer-level variables or Params, but that doesn't work very well
because it sometimes causes calling subqueries to be treated as SubPlans when
they could be InitPlans.  This is inefficient and also causes the outright
failure exhibited in bug #4902.  Instead, leave the cteParam out of it and
copy the underlying CTE plan's extParams directly.  Per bug #4902 from
Marko Tiikkaja.

3f1e529e78 Make to_timestamp and friends skip leading spaces before an integer field,
even when not in FM mode.  This improves compatibility with Oracle and with
our pre-8.4 behavior, as per bug #4862.

f51c9a6665 Change test tables in copy2 regression test to be temporary tables.
This prevents autovacuum from reclaiming free space in them and causing
the test's output row order to change, which is causing intermittent
bogus failure reports in the buildfarm.

Backpatch to 8.3.  The issue exists further back, but since autovacuum was
not on by default before 8.3, it's not a problem for buildfarm testing.

0c19f05803 Fix things so that you can still do "select foo()" where foo is a SQL
function returning setof record.  This used to work, more or less
accidentally, but I had broken it while extending the code to allow
materialize-mode functions to be called in select lists.  Add a regression
test case so it doesn't get broken again.  Per gripe from Greg Davidson.

bac2ad38ea Change AdjustIntervalForTypmod to not discard higher-order field values on the
grounds that they don't fit into the specified interval qualifier (typmod).
This behavior, while of long standing, is clearly wrong per spec --- for
example the value INTERVAL '999' SECOND means 999 seconds and should not be
reduced to less than 60 seconds.

In some cases there could be grounds to raise an error if higher-order field
values are not given as zero; for example '1 year 1 month'::INTERVAL MONTH
should arguably be taken as an error rather than equivalent to 13 months.
However our internal representation doesn't allow us to do that in a fashion
that would consistently reject all and only the cases that a strict reading
of the spec would suggest.  Also, seeing that for example INTERVAL '13' MONTH
will print out as '1 year 1 mon', we have to be careful not to create a
situation where valid data will fail to dump and reload.  The present patch
therefore takes the attitude of not throwing an error in any such case.
We might want to revisit that in future but it would take more redesign
than seems prudent in late beta.

Per a complaint from Sebastien Flaesch and subsequent discussion.  While
at other times we might have just postponed such an issue to the next
development cycle, 8.4 already has changed the parsing of interval literals
quite a bit in an effort to accept all spec-compliant cases correctly.
This seems like a change that should be part of that rather than coming
along later.

fc2660fc25 Fix LIKE's special-case code for % followed by _. I'm not entirely sure that
this case is worth a special code path, but a special code path that gets
the boundary condition wrong is definitely no good.  Per bug #4821 from
Andrew Gierth.

In passing, clean up some minor code formatting issues (excess parentheses
and blank lines in odd places).

Back-patch to 8.3, where the bug was introduced.

20a3ddbbf9 Fix the handling of sub-SELECTs appearing in the arguments of an outer-level
aggregate function.  By definition, such a sub-SELECT cannot reference any
variables of query levels between itself and the aggregate's semantic level
(else the aggregate would've been assigned to that lower level instead).
So the correct, most efficient implementation is to treat the sub-SELECT as
being a sub-select of that outer query level, not the level the aggregate
syntactically appears in.  Not doing so also confuses the heck out of our
parameter-passing logic, as illustrated in bug report from Daniel Grace.

Fortunately, we were already copying the whole Aggref expression up to the
outer query level, so all that's needed is to delay SS_process_sublinks
processing of the sub-SELECT until control returns to the outer level.

This has been broken since we introduced spec-compliant treatment of
outer aggregates in 7.4; so patch all the way back.

8d4f2ecd41 Change the default value of max_prepared_transactions to zero, and add
documentation warnings against setting it nonzero unless active use of
prepared transactions is intended and a suitable transaction manager has been
installed.  This should help to prevent the type of scenario we've seen
several times now where a prepared transaction is forgotten and eventually
causes severe maintenance problems (or even anti-wraparound shutdown).

The only real reason we had the default be nonzero in the first place was to
support regression testing of the feature.  To still be able to do that,
tweak pg_regress to force a nonzero value during "make check".  Since we
cannot force a nonzero value in "make installcheck", add a variant regression
test "expected" file that shows the results that will be obtained when
max_prepared_transactions is zero.

Also, extend the HINT messages for transaction wraparound warnings to mention
the possibility that old prepared transactions are causing the problem.

3a624e9200 Revise plpgsql's scanner to process comments and string literals in a way
more nearly matching the core SQL scanner.  The user-visible effects are:

* Block comments (slash-star comments) now nest, as per SQL spec.

* In standard_conforming_strings mode, backslash as the last character of a
  non-E string literal is now correctly taken as an ordinary character;
  formerly it was misinterpreted as escaping the ending quote.  (Since the
  string also had to pass through the core scanner, this invariably led
  to syntax errors.)

* Formerly, backslashes in the format string of RAISE were always treated as
  quoting the next character, regardless of mode.  Now, they are ordinary
  characters with standard_conforming_strings on, while with it off, they
  introduce the same set of escapes as in the core SQL scanner.  Also,
  escape_string_warning is now effective for RAISE format strings.  These
  changes make RAISE format strings work just like any other string literal.

This is implemented by copying and pasting a lot of logic from the core
scanner.  It would be a good idea to look into getting rid of plpgsql's
scanner entirely in favor of using the core scanner.  However, that involves
more change than I can justify making during beta --- in particular, the core
scanner would have to become re-entrant.

In passing, remove the kluge that made the plpgsql scanner emit T_FUNCTION or
T_TRIGGER as a made-up first token.  That presumably had some value once upon
a time, but now it's just useless complication for both the scanner and the
grammar.

06e2757277 Remove SQL-compatibility function cardinality(). It is not exactly clear
how this ought to behave for multi-dimensional arrays.  Per discussion,
not having it at all seems better than having it with what might prove
to be the wrong behavior.  We can always add it later when we have consensus
on the correct behavior.

03cd7571e8 Fix the plpgsql memory leak exhibited in bug #4677. That leak was introduced
by my patch of 2007-01-28 to use per-subtransaction ExprContexts/EStates:
since we re-prepared any expression tree when the current subtransaction ID
changed, we'd accumulate more and more leaked expression state trees in the
outermost subtransaction if the same function was executed at multiple levels
of subtransaction nesting.  To fix, go back to the previous scheme where
there was only one EState per transaction for simple plpgsql expressions.
We really only need an ExprContext per subtransaction, not a whole EState,
so it's possible to keep prepared expression state trees in the one EState
throughout the transaction.  This should be more efficient as well as not
leaking memory for cases involving lots of subtransactions.

The added regression test is the case that inspired the 2007-01-28 patch in
the first place, just to make sure we didn't go backwards.  The current
memory leak complaint is unfortunately hard to test for in the regression
test framework, though manual testing shows it's fixed.

Although this is a pre-existing bug, I'm not back-patching because I'd like to
see this method get some field testing first.  Consider back-patching if it
gets through 8.4beta unscathed.

1c2d408c01 Rewrite interval_hash() so that the hashcodes are equal for values that
interval_eq() considers equal.  I'm not sure how that fundamental requirement
escaped us through multiple revisions of this hash function, but there it is;
it's been wrong since interval_hash was first written for PG 7.1.
Per bug #4748 from Roman Kononov.

Backpatch to all supported releases.

This patch changes the contents of hash indexes for interval columns.  That's
no particular problem for PG 8.4, since we've broken on-disk compatibility
of hash indexes already; but it will require a migration warning note in
the next minor releases of all existing branches: "if you have any hash
indexes on columns of type interval, REINDEX them after updating".

793d5662e8 Fix an oversight in the support for storing/retrieving "minimal tuples" in
TupleTableSlots.  We have functions for retrieving a minimal tuple from a slot
after storing a regular tuple in it, or vice versa; but these were implemented
by converting the internal storage from one format to the other.  The problem
with that is it invalidates any pass-by-reference Datums that were already
fetched from the slot, since they'll be pointing into the just-freed version
of the tuple.  The known problem cases involve fetching both a whole-row
variable and a pass-by-reference value from a slot that is fed from a
tuplestore or tuplesort object.  The added regression tests illustrate some
simple cases, but there may be other failure scenarios traceable to the same
bug.  Note that the added tests probably only fail on unpatched code if it's
built with --enable-cassert; otherwise the bug leads to fetching from freed
memory, which will not have been overwritten without additional conditions.

Fix by allowing a slot to contain both formats simultaneously; which turns out
not to complicate the logic much at all, if anything it seems less contorted
than before.

Back-patch to 8.2, where minimal tuples were introduced.

0fd85d7879 Remove the datetime keywords ABSTIME and RELTIME, which we'd been treating as
noise words for the last twelve years, for compatibility with Berkeley-era
output formatting of the special INVALID values for those datatypes.
Considering that the datatypes themselves have been deprecated for awhile,
this is taking backwards compatibility a little far.  Per gripe from Josh
Berkus.

4886dc92e0 Fix set_subquery_pathlist() to copy the RTE's subquery before it gets mangled
by the planning process.  This prevents the "failed to locate grouping columns"
error recently reported by Dickson Guedes.  That happens because planning
replaces SubLinks by SubPlans in the subquery's targetlist, and exprTypmod()
is smarter about the former than the latter, causing the apparent type of
the subquery's output columns to change.  This seems to be a deficiency we
should fix in exprTypmod(), but that will be a much more invasive patch
with possible side-effects elsewhere, so I'll do that only in HEAD.

Back-patch to 8.3.  Arguably the lack of a copying step is broken/dangerous
all the way back, but in the absence of known problems I'll refrain from
making the older branches pay the extra cost.  (The reason this particular
symptom didn't appear before is that exprTypmod() wasn't smart about SubLinks
either, until 8.3.)

08eb37da4c Fix column privilege checking for cases where parent and child have different
attribute numbering.  Also, a parent whole-row reference should not require
select privilege on child columns that aren't inherited from the parent.

640796ff41 Reduce the maximum value of vacuum_cost_delay and autovacuum_vacuum_cost_delay
to 100ms (from 1000).  This still seems to be comfortably larger than the
useful range of the parameter, and it should help discourage people from
picking uselessly large values.  Tweak the documentation to recommend small
values, too.  Per discussion of a couple weeks ago.

e549722a8b Get rid of the rather fuzzily defined FlattenedSubLink node type in favor of
making pull_up_sublinks() construct a full-blown JoinExpr tree representation
of IN/EXISTS SubLinks that it is able to convert to semi or anti joins.
This makes pull_up_sublinks() a shade more complex, but the gain in semantic
clarity is worth it.  I still have more to do in this area to address the
previously-discussed problems, but this commit in itself fixes at least one
bug in HEAD, as shown by added regression test case.

7babccb915 Add the possibility to specify an explicit validator function for foreign-data
wrappers (similar to procedural languages).  This way we don't need to retain
the nearly empty libraries, and we are more free in how to implement the
wrapper API in the future.

71936fc5eb The Czech (cs_CZ) and Slovak (sk_SK) locales sort numbers after letters,
instead of vice versa.  Update the regression test expectations to support
that.  In the plpgsql test, adjust the test data so that this isn't an
issue.  In the char and varchar tests, add new expected files.

6d1e361852 Change ALTER TABLE SET WITHOUT OIDS to rewrite the whole table to physically
get rid of the OID column.  This eliminates the problem discovered by Heikki
back in November that 8.4's suppression of "unnecessary" junk filtering in
INSERT/SELECT could lead to an Assert failure, or storing of oids into a table
that shouldn't have them if Asserts are off.  While that particular problem
could have been solved in other ways, it seems likely to be just a forerunner
of things to come if we continue to allow tables to contain rows that disagree
with the pg_class.relhasoids setting.  It's better to make this operation slow
than to sacrifice performance or risk bugs in more common code paths.

Also, add ALTER TABLE SET WITH OIDS to rewrite the table to add oids.
This was a bit more controversial, but in view of the very small amount of
extra code needed given the current ALTER TABLE infrastructure, it seems best
to eliminate the asymmetry in features.

7449427a1e Clean up some loose ends from the column privileges patch: add
has_column_privilege and has_any_column_privilege SQL functions; fix the
information_schema views that are supposed to pay attention to column
privileges; adjust pg_stats to show stats for any column you have select
privilege on; and fix COPY to allow copying a subset of columns if the user
has suitable per-column privileges for all the columns.

To improve efficiency of some of the information_schema views, extend the
has_xxx_privilege functions to allow inquiring about the OR of a set of
privileges in just one call.  This is just exposing capability that already
existed in the underlying aclcheck routines.

In passing, make the information_schema views report the owner's own
privileges as being grantable, since Postgres assumes this even when the grant
option bit is not set in the ACL.  This is a longstanding oversight.

Also, make the new has_xxx_privilege functions for foreign data objects follow
the same coding conventions used by the older ones.

93a6be63a5 Revise the permission checking on user mapping DDL commands.
CREATE/ALTER/DROP USER MAPPING are now allowed either by the server owner or
by a user with USAGE privileges for his own user name.  This is more or less
what the SQL standard wants anyway (plus "implementation-defined")

Hide information_schema.user_mapping_options.option_value, unless the current
user is the one associated with the user mapping, or is the server owner and
the mapping is for PUBLIC, or is a superuser.  This is to protect passwords.

Also, fix a bug in information_schema._pg_foreign_servers, which hid servers
using wrappers where the current user did not have privileges on the wrapper.
The correct behavior is to hide servers where the current user has no
privileges on the server.

8e8854daa2 Add some basic support for window frame clauses to the window-functions
patch.  This includes the ability to force the frame to cover the whole
partition, and the ability to make the frame end exactly on the current row
rather than its last ORDER BY peer.  Supporting any more of the full SQL
frame-clause syntax will require nontrivial hacking on the window aggregate
code, so it'll have to wait for 8.5 or beyond.

a9d5f30be3 Restore enforce_generic_type_consistency's pre-8.3 behavior of allowing an
actual argument type of ANYARRAY to match an argument declared ANYARRAY,
so long as ANYELEMENT etc aren't used.  I had overlooked the fact that this
is a possible case while fixing bug #3852; but it is possible because
pg_statistic contains columns declared ANYARRAY.  Per gripe from Corey Horton.

18004101ac Modify UPDATE/DELETE WHERE CURRENT OF to use the FOR UPDATE infrastructure to
locate the target row, if the cursor was declared with FOR UPDATE or FOR
SHARE.  This approach is more flexible and reliable than digging through the
plan tree; for instance it can cope with join cursors.  But we still provide

0656ed3daa Make SELECT FOR UPDATE/SHARE work on inheritance trees, by having the plan
return the tableoid as well as the ctid for any FOR UPDATE targets that
have child tables.  All child tables are listed in the ExecRowMark list,
but the executor just skips the ones that didn't produce the current row.

Curiously, this longstanding restriction doesn't seem to have been documented
anywhere; so no doc changes.

c889ebce0a Implement the basic form of UNNEST, ie unnest(anyarray) returns setof
anyelement.  This lacks the WITH ORDINALITY option, as well as the multiple
input arrays option added in the most recent SQL specs.  But it's still a
pretty useful subset of the spec's functionality, and it is enough to
allow obsoleting contrib/intagg.

d1ab3eb712 Clean up the ancient decision to show only two fractional-seconds digits
in "postgres_verbose" intervalstyle, and the equally arbitrary decision to
show at least two fractional-seconds digits in most other datetime display
styles.  This results in some minor changes in the expected regression test
outputs.

Also, coalesce a lot of repetitive code in datetime.c into subroutines,
for clarity and ease of maintenance.  In particular this roughly halves
the number of #ifdef HAVE_INT64_TIMESTAMP segments.

df7641e25a Add a new GUC variable called "IntervalStyle" that decouples interval output
from DateStyle, and create a new interval style that produces output matching
the SQL standard (at least for interval values that fall within the standard's
restrictions).  IntervalStyle is also used to resolve the conflict between the
standard and traditional Postgres rules for interpreting negative interval
input.

9b46abb7c4 Allow SQL-language functions to return the output of an INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE
RETURNING clause, not just a SELECT as formerly.

A side effect of this patch is that when a set-returning SQL function is used
in a FROM clause, performance is improved because the output is collected into
a tuplestore within the function, rather than using the less efficient
value-per-call mechanism.

06224652f2 Add docs and regression test about sorting the output of a recursive query in
depth-first search order.  Upon close reading of SQL:2008, it seems that the
spec's SEARCH DEPTH FIRST and SEARCH BREADTH FIRST options do not actually
guarantee any particular result order: what they do is provide a constructed
column that the user can then sort on in the outer query.  So this is actually
just as much functionality ...

e3b0117459 Implement comparison of generic records (composite types), and invent a
pseudo-type record[] to represent arrays of possibly-anonymous composite
types.  Since composite datums carry their own type identification, no
extra knowledge is needed at the array level.

The main reason for doing this right now is that it is necessary to support
the general case of detection of cycles in recursive queries: if you need to
compare more than one column to detect a cycle, you need to compare a ROW()
to an array built from ROW()s, at least if you want to do it as the spec
suggests.  Add some documentation and regression tests concerning the cycle
detection issue.

44d5be0e53 Implement SQL-standard WITH clauses, including WITH RECURSIVE.
There are some unimplemented aspects: recursive queries must use UNION ALL
(should allow UNION too), and we don't have SEARCH or CYCLE clauses.
These might or might not get done for 8.4, but even without them it's a
pretty useful feature.

There are also a couple of small loose ends and definitional quibbles,
which I'll send a memo about to pgsql-hackers shortly.  But let's land
the patch now so we can get on with other development.

b73c0c2a51 Clean up a couple of weird corner cases in interval parsing: make -yyyy-mm be
interpreted as expected (the sign should affect months too), and get rid of
hard-wired assumption that unmarked signed values must be hours (if integers)
or seconds (if floats).  The former was just a bug in my previous patch,
while the latter may have made sense at one time but seems illogical now
that we support determination of the units from typmod information.

70530c808b Adjust the parser to accept the typename syntax INTERVAL ... SECOND(n)
and the literal syntax INTERVAL 'string' ... SECOND(n), as required by the
SQL standard.  Our old syntax put (n) directly after INTERVAL, which was
a mistake, but will still be accepted for backward compatibility as well
as symmetry with the TIMESTAMP cases.

Change intervaltypmodout to show it in the spec's way, too.  (This could
potentially affect clients, if there are any that analyze the typmod of an
INTERVAL in any detail.)

Also fix interval input to handle 'min:sec.frac' properly; I had overlooked
this case in my previous patch.

Document the use of the interval fields qualifier, which up to now we had
never mentioned in the docs.  (I think the omission was intentional because
it didn't work per spec; but it does now, or at least close enough to be
credible.)

f867339c01 Make our parsing of INTERVAL literals spec-compliant (or at least a heck of
a lot closer than it was before).  To do this, tweak coerce_type() to pass
through the typmod information when invoking interval_in() on an UNKNOWN
constant; then fix DecodeInterval to pay attention to the typmod when deciding
how to interpret a units-less integer value.  I changed one or two other
details as well.  I believe the code now reacts as expected by spec for all
the literal syntaxes that are specifically enumerated in the spec.  There
are corner cases involving strings that don't exactly match the set of fields
called out by the typmod, for which we might want to tweak the behavior some
more; but I think this is an area of user friendliness rather than spec
compliance.  There remain some non-compliant details about the SQL syntax
(as opposed to what's inside the literal string); but at least we'll throw
error rather than silently doing the wrong thing in those cases.

d4af2a6481 Clean up the loose ends in selectivity estimation left by my patch for semi
and anti joins.  To do this, pass the SpecialJoinInfo struct for the current
join as an additional optional argument to operator join selectivity
estimation functions.  This allows the estimator to tell not only what kind
of join is being formed, but which variable is on which side of the join;
a requirement long recognized but not dealt with till now.  This also leaves
the door open for future improvements in the estimators, such as accounting
for the null-insertion effects of lower outer joins.  I didn't do anything
about that in the current patch but the information is in principle deducible
from what's passed.

The patch also clarifies the definition of join selectivity for semi/anti
joins: it's the fraction of the left input that has (at least one) match
in the right input.  This allows getting rid of some very fuzzy thinking
that I had committed in the original 7.4-era IN-optimization patch.
There's probably room to estimate this better than the present patch does,
but at least we know what to estimate.

Since I had to touch CREATE OPERATOR anyway to allow a variant signature
for join estimator functions, I took the opportunity to add a couple of
additional checks that were missing, per my recent message to -hackers:
* Check that estimator functions return float8;
* Require execute permission at the time of CREATE OPERATOR on the
operator's function as well as the estimator functions;
* Require ownership of any pre-existing operator that's modified by
the command.
I also moved the lookup of the functions out of OperatorCreate() and
into operatorcmds.c, since that seemed more consistent with most of
the other catalog object creation processes, eg CREATE TYPE.

368df30427 Support hashing for duplicate-elimination in INTERSECT and EXCEPT queries.
This completes my project of improving usage of hashing for duplicate
elimination (aggregate functions with DISTINCT remain undone, but that's
for some other day).

As with the previous patches, this means we can INTERSECT/EXCEPT on datatypes
that can hash but not sort, and it means that INTERSECT/EXCEPT without ORDER
BY are no longer certain to produce sorted output.

be3b265c94 Improve SELECT DISTINCT to consider hash aggregation, as well as sort/uniq,
as methods for implementing the DISTINCT step.  This eliminates the former
performance gap between DISTINCT and GROUP BY, and also makes it possible
to do SELECT DISTINCT on datatypes that only support hashing not sorting.

SELECT DISTINCT ON is still always implemented by sorting; it would take
executor changes to support hashing that, and it's not clear it's worth
the trouble.

This is a release-note-worthy incompatibility from previous PG versions,
since SELECT DISTINCT can no longer be counted on to deliver sorted output
without explicitly saying ORDER BY.  (Anyone who can't cope with that
can consider turning off enable_hashagg.)

Several regression test queries needed to have ORDER BY added to preserve
stable output order.  I fixed the ones that manifested here, but there
might be some other cases that show up on other platforms.

bac3e83622 Replace the hard-wired type knowledge in TypeCategory() and IsPreferredType()
with system catalog lookups, as was foreseen to be necessary almost since
their creation.  Instead put the information into two new pg_type columns,
typcategory and typispreferred.  Add support for setting these when
creating a user-defined base type.

The category column is just a "char" (i.e. a poor man's enum), allowing
a crude form of user extensibility of the category list: just use an
otherwise-unused character.  This seems sufficient for foreseen uses,
but we could upgrade to having an actual category catalog someday, if
there proves to be a huge demand for custom type categories.

In this patch I have attempted to hew exactly to the behavior of the
previous hardwired logic, except for introducing new type categories for
arrays, composites, and enums.  In particular the default preferred state
for user-defined types remains TRUE.  That seems worth revisiting, but it
should be done as a separate patch from introducing the infrastructure.
Likewise, any adjustment of the standard set of categories should be done
separately.

6563e9e2e8 Add a "provariadic" column to pg_proc to eliminate the remarkably expensive
need to deconstruct proargmodes for each pg_proc entry inspected by
FuncnameGetCandidates().  Fixes function lookup performance regression
caused by yesterday's variadic-functions patch.

In passing, make pg_proc.probin be NULL, rather than a dummy value '-',
in cases where it is not actually used for the particular type of function.
This should buy back some of the space cost of the extra column.

d89737d31c Support "variadic" functions, which can accept a variable number of arguments
so long as all the trailing arguments are of the same (non-array) type.
The function receives them as a single array argument (which is why they
have to all be the same type).

It might be useful to extend this facility to aggregates, but this patch
doesn't do that.

This patch imposes a noticeable slowdown on function lookup --- a follow-on
patch will fix that by adding a redundant column to pg_proc.

772a6d45ef Fix mis-calculation of extParam/allParam sets for plan nodes, as seen in
bug #4290.  The fundamental bug is that masking extParam by outer_params,
as finalize_plan had been doing, caused us to lose the information that
an initPlan depended on the output of a sibling initPlan.  On reflection
the best thing to do seemed to be not to try to adjust outer_params for
this case but get rid of it entirely.  The only thing it was really doing
for us was to filter out param IDs associated with SubPlan nodes, and that
can be done (with greater accuracy) while processing individual SubPlan
nodes in finalize_primnode.  This approach was vindicated by the discovery
that the masking method was hiding a second bug: SS_finalize_plan failed to
remove extParam bits for initPlan output params that were referenced in the
main plan tree (it only got rid of those referenced by other initPlans).
It's not clear that this caused any real problems, given the limited use
of extParam by the executor, but it's certainly not what was intended.

I originally thought that there was also a problem with needing to include
indirect dependencies on external params in initPlans' param sets, but it
turns out that the executor handles this correctly so long as the depended-on
initPlan is earlier in the initPlans list than the one using its output.
That seems a bit of a fragile assumption, but it is true at the moment,
so I just documented it in some code comments rather than making what would
be rather invasive changes to remove the assumption.

Back-patch to 8.1.  Previous versions don't have the case of initPlans
referring to other initPlans' outputs, so while the existing logic is still
questionable for them, there are not any known bugs to be fixed.  So I'll
refrain from changing them for now.

dcc2334736 Consider a clause to be outerjoin_delayed if it references the nullable side
of any lower outer join, even if it also references the non-nullable side and
so could not get pushed below the outer join anyway.  We need this in case
the clause is an OR clause: if it doesn't get marked outerjoin_delayed,
create_or_index_quals() could pull an indexable restriction for the nullable
side out of it, leading to wrong results as demonstrated by today's bug
report from toruvinn.  (See added regression test case for an example.)

In principle this has been wrong for quite a while.  In practice I don't
think any branch before 8.3 can really show the failure, because
create_or_index_quals() will only pull out indexable conditions, and before
8.3 those were always strict.  So though we might have improperly generated
null-extended rows in the outer join, they'd get discarded from the result
anyway.  The gating factor that makes the failure visible is that 8.3
considers "col IS NULL" to be indexable.  Hence I'm not going to risk
back-patching further than 8.3.

0cefb50f3c Refactor the handling of the various DropStmt variants so that when multiple
objects are specified, we drop them all in a single performMultipleDeletions
call.  This makes the RESTRICT/CASCADE checks more relaxed: it's not counted
as a cascade if one of the later objects has a dependency on an earlier one.
NOTICE messages about such cases go away, too.

In passing, fix the permissions check for DROP CONVERSION, which for some
reason was never made role-aware, and omitted the namespace-owner exemption
too.

8c2ac75c5c Adjust timestamp regression tests to prevent two low-probability failure
cases.  Recent buildfarm experience shows that it is sometimes possible
to execute several SQL commands in less time than the granularity of
Windows' not-very-high-resolution gettimeofday(), leading to a failure
because the tests expect the value of now() to change and it doesn't.
Also, it was recognized some time ago that the same area of the tests
could fail if local midnight passes between the insertion and the checking
of the values for 'yesterday', 'tomorrow', etc.  Clean all this up per
ideas from myself and Greg Stark.

There remains a window for failure if the transaction block is entered
exactly at local midnight (so that 'now' and 'today' have the same value),
but that seems low-probability enough to live with.

Since the point of this change is mostly to eliminate buildfarm noise,
back-patch to all versions we are still actively testing.

10a3471bed Add a RESTART (without parameter) option to ALTER SEQUENCE, allowing a
sequence to be reset to its original starting value.  This requires adding the
original start value to the set of parameters (columns) of a sequence object,
which is a user-visible change with potential compatibility implications;
it also forces initdb.

Also add hopefully-SQL-compatible RESTART/CONTINUE IDENTITY options to
TRUNCATE TABLE.  RESTART IDENTITY executes ALTER SEQUENCE RESTART for all
sequences "owned by" any of the truncated relations.  CONTINUE IDENTITY is
a no-op option.

error code to use.  The syntax has also been tweaked so that the
Oracle-compatible case "RAISE exception_name" works (though you won't get a
very nice error message if you just write that much).  Lastly, support
the Oracle-compatible syntax "RAISE" with no parameters to re-throw
the current error from within an EXCEPTION block.

In passing, allow the syntax SQLSTATE 'nnnnn' within EXCEPTION lists,
so that there is a way to trap errors with custom SQLSTATE codes.

cd902b331d Change the rules for inherited CHECK constraints to be essentially the same
as those for inherited columns; that is, it's no longer allowed for a child
table to not have a check constraint matching one that exists on a parent.
This satisfies the principle of least surprise (rows selected from the parent
will always appear to meet its check constraints) and eliminates some
longstanding bogosity in pg_dump, which formerly had to guess about whether
check constraints were really inherited or not.

The implementation involves adding conislocal and coninhcount columns to
pg_constraint (paralleling attislocal and attinhcount in pg_attribute)
and refactoring various ALTER TABLE actions to be more like those for
columns.

5c068038ff Fix ALTER TABLE ADD COLUMN ... PRIMARY KEY so that the new column is correctly
checked to see if it's been initialized to all non-nulls.  The implicit NOT
NULL constraint was not being checked during the ALTER (in fact, not even if
there was an explicit NOT NULL too), because ATExecAddColumn neglected to
set the flag needed to make the test happen.  This has been broken since
the capability was first added, in 8.0.

ff673f558a Fix convert_IN_to_join to properly handle the case where the subselect's
output is not of the same type that's needed for the IN comparison (ie,
where the parser inserted an implicit coercion above the subselect result).
We should record the coerced expression, not just a raw Var referencing
the subselect output, as the quantity that needs to be unique-ified if
we choose to implement the IN as Unique followed by a plain join.

As of 8.3 this error was causing crashes, as seen in bug #4113 from Javier
Hernandez, because the executor was being told to hash or sort the raw
subselect output column using operators appropriate to the coerced type.

In prior versions there was no crash because the executor chose the
hash or sort operators for itself based on the column type it saw.
However, that's still not really right, because what's unique for one data
type might not be unique for another.  In corner cases we could get multiple
outputs of a row that should appear only once, as demonstrated by the
regression test case included in this commit.

However, this patch doesn't apply cleanly to 8.2 or before, and the code
involved has shifted enough over time that I'm hesitant to try to back-patch.
Given the lack of complaints from the field about such corner cases, I think
the bug may not be important enough to risk breaking other things with a
back-patch.

8472bf7a73 Allow float8, int8, and related datatypes to be passed by value on machines
where Datum is 8 bytes wide.  Since this will break old-style C functions
(those still using version 0 calling convention) that have arguments or
results of these types, provide a configure option to disable it and retain
the old pass-by-reference behavior.  Likewise, provide a configure option
to disable the recently-committed float4 pass-by-value change.

4e82a95476 Replace "amgetmulti" AM functions with "amgetbitmap", in which the whole
indexscan always occurs in one call, and the results are returned in a
TIDBitmap instead of a limited-size array of TIDs.  This should improve
speed a little by reducing AM entry/exit overhead, and it is necessary
infrastructure if we are ever to support bitmap indexes.

In an only slightly related change, add support for TIDBitmaps to preserve
(somewhat lossily) the knowledge that particular TIDs reported by an index
need to have their quals rechecked when the heap is visited.  This facility
is not really used yet; we'll need to extend the forced-recheck feature to
plain indexscans before it's useful, and that hasn't been coded yet.
The intent is to use it to clean up 8.3's horrid @@@ kluge for text search
with weighted queries.  There might be other uses in future, but that one
alone is sufficient reason.

2604359251 Improve hash_any() to use word-wide fetches when hashing suitably aligned
data.  This makes for a significant speedup at the cost that the results
now vary between little-endian and big-endian machines; which forces us
to add explicit ORDER BYs in a couple of regression tests to preserve
machine-independent comparison results.  Also, force initdb by bumping
catversion, since the contents of hash indexes will change (at least on
big-endian machines).

Kenneth Marshall and Tom Lane, based on work from Bob Jenkins.  This commit
does not adopt Bob's new faster mix() algorithm, however, since we still need
to convince ourselves that that doesn't degrade the quality of the hashing.

a0fad9762a Re-implement division for numeric values using the traditional "schoolbook"
algorithm.  This is a good deal slower than our old roundoff-error-prone
code for long inputs, so we keep the old code for use in the transcendental
functions, where everything is approximate anyway.  Also create a
user-accessible function div(numeric, numeric) to provide access to the
exact result of trunc(x/y) --- since the regular numeric / operator will
round off its result, simply computing that expression in SQL doesn't
reliably give the desired answer.  This fixes bug #3387 and various related
corner cases, and improves the usefulness of PG for high-precision integer
arithmetic.

6b0706ac33 Arrange for an explicit cast applied to an ARRAY[] constructor to be applied
directly to all the member expressions, instead of the previous implementation
where the ARRAY[] constructor would infer a common element type and then we'd
coerce the finished array after the fact.  This has a number of benefits,
one being that we can allow an empty ARRAY[] construct so long as its
element type is specified by such a cast.

6a6522529f Fix some planner issues found while investigating Kevin Grittner's report
of poorer planning in 8.3 than 8.2:

1. After pushing a constant across an outer join --- ie, given
"a LEFT JOIN b ON (a.x = b.y) WHERE a.x = 42", we can deduce that b.y is
sort of equal to 42, in the sense that we needn't fetch any b rows where
it isn't 42 --- loop to see if any additional deductions can be made.
Previous releases did that by recursing, but I had mistakenly thought that
this was no longer necessary given the EquivalenceClass machinery.

2. Allow pushing constants across outer join conditions even if the
condition is outerjoin_delayed due to a lower outer join.  This is safe
as long as the condition is strict and we re-test it at the upper join.

3. Keep the outer-join clause even if we successfully push a constant
across it.  This is *necessary* in the outerjoin_delayed case, but
even in the simple case, it seems better to do this to ensure that the
join search order heuristics will consider the join as reasonable to
make.  Mark such a clause as having selectivity 1.0, though, since it's
not going to eliminate very many rows after application of the constant
condition.

4. Tweak have_relevant_eclass_joinclause to report that two relations
are joinable when they have vars that are equated to the same constant.
We won't actually generate any joinclause from such an EquivalenceClass,
but again it seems that in such a case it's a good idea to consider
the join as worth costing out.

5. Fix a bug in select_mergejoin_clauses that was exposed by these
changes: we have to reject candidate mergejoin clauses if either side was
equated to a constant, because we can't construct a canonical pathkey list
for such a clause.  This is an implementation restriction that might be
worth fixing someday, but it doesn't seem critical to get it done for 8.3.

895a94de6d Avoid incrementing the CommandCounter when CommandCounterIncrement is called
but no database changes have been made since the last CommandCounterIncrement.
This should result in a significant improvement in the number of "commands"
that can typically be performed within a transaction before hitting the 2^32
CommandId size limit.  In particular this buys back (and more) the possible
adverse consequences of my previous patch to fix plan caching behavior.

The implementation requires tracking whether the current CommandCounter
value has been "used" to mark any tuples.  CommandCounter values stored into
snapshots are presumed not to be used for this purpose.  This requires some
small executor changes, since the executor used to conflate the curcid of
the snapshot it was using with the command ID to mark output tuples with.
Separating these concepts allows some small simplifications in executor APIs.

Something for the TODO list: look into having CommandCounterIncrement not do
AcceptInvalidationMessages.  It seems fairly bogus to be doing it there,
but exactly where to do it instead isn't clear, and I'm disinclined to mess
with asynchronous behavior during late beta.

07daff63c5 Fix select_common_type() so that it can select a domain type, if all inputs
to a UNION, CASE, or related construct are of the same domain type.  The
main part of this routine smashes domains to their base types, which seems
necessary because the logic involves TypeCategory() and IsPreferredType(),
neither of which work usefully on domains.  However, we can add a first
pass that just detects whether all the inputs are exactly the same type,
and if so accept that without question (so long as it's not UNKNOWN).
Per recent gripe from Dean Rasheed.

In passing, remove some tests for InvalidOid, which have clearly been dead
code for quite some time now, because getBaseType() would fail on that input.

Also, clarify the manual's not-very-precise description of the existing
algorithm's behavior.

b17b7fae8c Remove the hack in the grammar that "optimized away" DEFAULT NULL clauses.
Instead put in a test to drop a NULL default at the last moment before
storing the catalog entry.  This changes the behavior in a couple of ways:
* Specifying DEFAULT NULL when creating an inheritance child table will
  successfully suppress inheritance of any default expression from the
  parent's column, where formerly it failed to do so.
* Specifying DEFAULT NULL for a column of a domain type will correctly
  override any default belonging to the domain; likewise for a sub-domain.
The latter change happens because by the time the clause is checked,
it won't be a simple null Const but a CoerceToDomain expression.

Personally I think this should be back-patched, but there doesn't seem to
be consensus for that on pgsql-hackers, so refraining.

c29a9c37bf Fix UPDATE/DELETE WHERE CURRENT OF to support repeated update and update-
then-delete on the current cursor row.  The basic fix is that nodeTidscan.c
has to apply heap_get_latest_tid() to the current-scan-TID obtained from the
cursor query; this ensures we get the latest row version to work with.
However, since that only works if the query plan is a TID scan, we also have
to hack the planner to make sure only that type of plan will be selected.
(Formerly, the planner might decide to apply a seqscan if the table is very
small.  This change is probably a Good Thing anyway, since it's hard to see
how a seqscan could really win.)  That means the execQual.c code to support
CurrentOfExpr as a regular expression type is dead code, so replace it with
just an elog().  Also, add regression tests covering these cases.  Note
that the added tests expose the fact that re-fetching an updated row
misbehaves if the cursor used FOR UPDATE.  That's an independent bug that
should be fixed later.  Per report from Dharmendra Goyal.

dbaec70c15 Rename and slightly redefine the default text search parser's "word"
categories, as per discussion.  asciiword (formerly lword) is still
ASCII-letters-only, and numword (formerly word) is still the most general
mixed-alpha-and-digits case.  But word (formerly nlword) is now
any-group-of-letters-with-at-least-one-non-ASCII, rather than all-non-ASCII as
before.  This is no worse than before for parsing mixed Russian/English text,
which seems to have been the design center for the original coding; and it
should simplify matters for parsing most European languages.  In particular
it will not be necessary for any language to accept strings containing digits
as being regular "words".  The hyphenated-word categories are adjusted
similarly.

82d8ab6fc4 Fix the plan-invalidation mechanism to treat regclass constants that refer to
a relation as a reason to invalidate a plan when the relation changes.  This
handles scenarios such as dropping/recreating a sequence that is referenced by
nextval('seq') in a cached plan.  Rather than teach plancache.c all about
digging through plan trees to find regclass Consts, we charge the planner's
setrefs.c with making a list of the relation OIDs on which each plan depends.
That way the list can be built cheaply during a plan tree traversal that has
to happen anyway.  Per bug #3662 and subsequent discussion.

48f7e64395 Simplify and rename some GUC variables, per various recent discussions:
* stats_start_collector goes away; we always start the collector process,
unless prevented by a problem with setting up the stats UDP socket.

* stats_reset_on_server_start goes away; it seems useless in view of the
availability of pg_stat_reset().

* stats_block_level and stats_row_level are merged into a single variable
"track_counts", which controls all reports sent to the collector process.

* stats_command_string is renamed to track_activities.

* log_autovacuum is renamed to log_autovacuum_min_duration to better reflect
its meaning.

The log_autovacuum change is not a compatibility issue since it didn't exist
before 8.3 anyway.  The other changes need to be release-noted.

82a47982f3 Arrange for SET LOCAL's effects to persist until the end of the current top
transaction, unless rolled back or overridden by a SET clause for the same
variable attached to a surrounding function call.  Per discussion, these
seem the best semantics.  Note that this is an INCOMPATIBLE CHANGE: in 8.0
through 8.2, SET LOCAL's effects disappeared at subtransaction commit
(leading to behavior that made little sense at the SQL level).

I took advantage of the opportunity to rewrite and simplify the GUC variable
save/restore logic a little bit.  The old idea of a "tentative" value is gone;
it was a hangover from before we had a stack.  Also, we no longer need a stack
entry for every nesting level, but only for those in which a variable's value
actually changed.

a4df52f95f Fix breakage of GIN support for varchar[] and cidr[] that I introduced in the
operator-family rewrite.  I had mistakenly supposed that these could use the
pg_amproc entries for text[] and inet[] respectively.  However, binary
compatibility of the underlying types does not make two array types binary
compatible (since they must differ in the header field that gives the element
type OID), and so the index support code doesn't consider those entries
applicable.  Add back the missing pg_amproc entries, and add an opr_sanity
query to try to catch such mistakes in future.  Per report from Gregory

b4c806faa8 Rewrite make_outerjoininfo's construction of min_lefthand and min_righthand
sets for outer joins, in the light of bug #3588 and additional thought and
experimentation.  The original methodology was fatally flawed for nests of
more than two outer joins: it got the relationships between adjacent joins
right, but didn't always come to the right conclusions about whether a join
could be interchanged with one two or more levels below it.  This was largely
caused by a mistaken idea that we should use the min_lefthand + min_righthand
sets of a sub-join as the minimum left or right input set of an upper join
when we conclude that the sub-join can't commute with the upper one.  If
there's a still-lower join that the sub-join *can* commute with, this method
led us to think that that one could commute with the topmost join; which it
can't.  Another problem (not directly connected to bug #3588) was that
make_outerjoininfo's processing-order-dependent method for enforcing outer
join identity #3 didn't work right: if we decided that join A could safely
commute with lower join B, we dropped all information about sub-joins under B
that join A could perhaps not safely commute with, because we removed B's
entire min_righthand from A's.

To fix, make an explicit computation of all inner join combinations that occur
below an outer join, and add to that the full syntactic relsets of any lower
outer joins that we determine it can't commute with.  This method gives much
more direct enforcement of the outer join rearrangement identities, and it
turns out not to cost a lot of additional bookkeeping.

9cb8409762 Repair problems occurring when multiple RI updates have to be done to the same
row within one query: we were firing check triggers before all the updates
were done, leading to bogus failures.  Fix by making the triggers queued by
an RI update go at the end of the outer query's trigger event list, thereby
effectively making the processing "breadth-first".  This was indeed how it
worked pre-8.0, so the bug does not occur in the 7.x branches.

d514ea3fda Fix an old thinko in SS_make_initplan_from_plan, which is used when optimizing
a MIN or MAX aggregate call into an indexscan: the initplan is being made at
the current query nesting level and so we shouldn't increment query_level.
Though usually harmless, this mistake could lead to bogus "plan should not
reference subplan's variable" failures on complex queries.  Per bug report
from David Sanchez i Gregori.

2c535bfe81 Fix incorrect optimization of foreign-key checks. When an UPDATE on the
referencing table does not change the tuple's FK column(s), we don't bother
to check the PK table since the constraint was presumably already valid.
However, the check is still necessary if the tuple was inserted by our own
transaction, since in that case the INSERT trigger will conclude it need not
make the check (since its version of the tuple has been deleted).  We got this
right for simple cases, but not when the insert and update are in different
subtransactions of the current top-level transaction; in such cases the FK
check would never be made at all.  (Hence, problem dates back to 8.0 when
subtransactions were added --- it's actually the subtransaction version of a
bug fixed in 7.3.5.)  Fix, and add regression test cases.  Report and fix by
Affan Salman.

name.  With this patch, it is always possible for the user to qualify a
plpgsql variable name if needed to avoid ambiguity.  While there is much more
work to be done in this area, this simple change removes one unnecessary

48d9d8e131 Fix a couple of planner bugs introduced by the new ability to discard
ORDER BY <constant> as redundant.  One is that this means query_planner()
has to canonicalize pathkeys even when the query jointree is empty;
the canonicalization was always a no-op in such cases before, but no more.
Also, we have to guard against thinking that a set-returning function is
"constant" for this purpose.  Add a couple of regression tests for these
evidently under-tested cases.  Per report from Greg Stark and subsequent
experimentation.

23347231a5 Tweak the API for per-datatype typmodin functions so that they are passed
an array of strings rather than an array of integers, and allow any simple
constant or identifier to be used in typmods; for example
	create table foo (f1 widget(42,'23skidoo',point));
Of course the typmodin function has still got to pack this info into a
non-negative int32 for storage, but it's still a useful improvement in
flexibility, especially considering that you can do nearly anything if you
are willing to keep the info in a side table.  We can get away with this
change since we have not yet released a version providing user-definable
typmods.  Per discussion.

6808f1b1de Support UPDATE/DELETE WHERE CURRENT OF cursor_name, per SQL standard.
Along the way, allow FOR UPDATE in non-WITH-HOLD cursors; there may once
have been a reason to disallow that, but it seems to work now, and it's
really rather necessary if you want to select a row via a cursor and then
update it in a concurrent-safe fashion.

2d4db3675f Fix up text concatenation so that it accepts all the reasonable cases that
were accepted by prior Postgres releases.  This takes care of the loose end
left by the preceding patch to downgrade implicit casts-to-text.  To avoid
breaking desirable behavior for array concatenation, introduce a new
polymorphic pseudo-type "anynonarray" --- the added concatenation operators
are actually text || anynonarray and anynonarray || text.

31edbadf4a Downgrade implicit casts to text to be assignment-only, except for the ones
from the other string-category types; this eliminates a lot of surprising
interpretations that the parser could formerly make when there was no directly
applicable operator.

Create a general mechanism that supports casts to and from the standard string
types (text,varchar,bpchar) for *every* datatype, by invoking the datatype's
I/O functions.  These new casts are assignment-only in the to-string direction,
explicit-only in the other, and therefore should create no surprising behavior.
Remove a bunch of thereby-obsoleted datatype-specific casting functions.

The "general mechanism" is a new expression node type CoerceViaIO that can
actually convert between *any* two datatypes if their external text
representations are compatible.  This is more general than needed for the
immediate feature, but might be useful in plpgsql or other places in future.

This commit does nothing about the issue that applying the concatenation
operator || to non-text types will now fail, often with strange error messages
due to misinterpreting the operator as array concatenation.  Since it often
(not always) worked before, we should either make it succeed or at least give
a more user-friendly error; but details are still under debate.

cadb78330e Repair two constraint-exclusion corner cases triggered by proving that an
inheritance child of an UPDATE/DELETE target relation can be excluded by
constraints.  I had rearranged some code in set_append_rel_pathlist() to
avoid "useless" work when a child is excluded, but overdid it and left
the child with no cheapest_path entry, causing possible failure later
if the appendrel was involved in a join.  Also, it seems that the dummy
plan generated by inheritance_planner() when all branches are excluded
has to be a bit less dummy now than was required in 8.2.

11086f2f2b Repair planner bug introduced in 8.2 by ability to rearrange outer joins:
in cases where a sub-SELECT inserts a WHERE clause between two outer joins,
that clause may prevent us from re-ordering the two outer joins.  The code
was considering only the joins' own ON-conditions in determining reordering
safety, which is not good enough.  Add a "delay_upper_joins" flag to
OuterJoinInfo to flag that we have detected such a clause and higher-level
outer joins shouldn't be permitted to commute with this one.  (This might
seem overly coarse, but given the current rules for OJ reordering, it's
sufficient AFAICT.)

The failure case is actually pretty narrow: it needs a WHERE clause within
the RHS of a left join that checks the RHS of a lower left join, but is not
strict for that RHS (else we'd have simplified the lower join to a plain
join).  Even then no failure will be manifest unless the planner chooses to
rearrange the join order.

b11123b675 Fix parameter recalculation for Limit nodes: during a ReScan call we must
recompute the limit/offset immediately, so that the updated values are
available when the child's ReScan function is invoked.  Add a regression
test for this, too.  Bug is new in HEAD (due to the bounded-sorting patch)
so no need for back-patch.

I did not do anything about merging this signaling with chgParam processing,
but if we were to do that we'd still need to compute the updated values
at this point rather than during the first ProcNode call.

9aa3c782c9 Fix the problem that creating a user-defined type named _foo, followed by one
named foo, would work but the other ordering would not.  If a user-specified
type or table name collides with an existing auto-generated array name, just
rename the array type out of the way by prepending more underscores.  This
should not create any backward-compatibility issues, since the cases in which
this will happen would have failed outright in prior releases.

Also fix an oversight in the arrays-of-composites patch: ALTER TABLE RENAME
renamed the table's rowtype but not its array type.

d8326119c8 Fix my oversight in enabling domains-of-domains: ALTER DOMAIN ADD CONSTRAINT
needs to check the new constraint against columns of derived domains too.

Also, make it error out if the domain to be modified is used within any
composite-type columns.  Eventually we should support that case, but it seems
a bit painful, and not suitable for a back-patch.  For the moment just let the
user know we can't do it.

Backpatch to 8.2, which is the only released version that allows nested
domains.  Possibly the other part should be back-patched further.

bc8036fc66 Support arrays of composite types, including the rowtypes of regular tables
and views (but not system catalogs, nor sequences or toast tables).  Get rid
of the hardwired convention that a type's array type is named exactly "_type",
instead using a new column pg_type.typarray to provide the linkage.  (It still
will be named "_type", though, except in odd corner cases such as
maximum-length type names.)

Along the way, make tracking of owner and schema dependencies for types more
uniform: a type directly created by the user has these dependencies, while a
table rowtype or auto-generated array type does not have them, but depends on
its parent object instead.

b4349519c1 Fix a thinko in my patch of a couple months ago for bug #3116: it did the
wrong thing when inlining polymorphic SQL functions, because it was using the
function's declared return type where it should have used the actual result
type of the current call.  In 8.1 and 8.2 this causes obvious failures even if
you don't have assertions turned on; in 8.0 and 7.4 it would only be a problem
if the inlined expression were used as an input to a function that did
run-time type determination on its inputs.  Add a regression test, since this
is evidently an under-tested area.

957d08c81f Implement rate-limiting logic on how often backends will attempt to send
messages to the stats collector.  This avoids the problem that enabling
stats_row_level for autovacuum has a significant overhead for short
read-only transactions, as noted by Arjen van der Meijden.  We can avoid
an extra gettimeofday call by piggybacking on the one done for WAL-logging
xact commit or abort (although that doesn't help read-only transactions,
since they don't WAL-log anything).

In my proposal for this, I noted that we could change the WAL log entries
for commit/abort to record full TimestampTz precision, instead of only
time_t as at present.  That's not done in this patch, but will be committed
separately.

aa27977fe2 Support explicit placement of the temporary-table schema within search_path.
This is needed to allow a security-definer function to set a truly secure
value of search_path.  Without it, a malicious user can use temporary objects
to execute code with the privileges of the security-definer function.  Even
pushing the temp schema to the back of the search path is not quite good
enough, because a function or operator at the back of the path might still
capture control from one nearer the front due to having a more exact datatype
match.  Hence, disable searching the temp schema altogether for functions and
operators.

d13e903bea RESET SESSION, plus related new DDL commands. Patch from Marko Kreen,
reviewed by Neil Conway. This patch adds the following DDL command
variants: RESET SESSION, RESET TEMP, RESET PLANS, CLOSE ALL, and
DEALLOCATE ALL. RESET SESSION is intended for use by connection
pool software and the like, in order to reset a client session
to something close to its initial state.

Note that while most of these command variants can be executed
inside a transaction block (but are not transaction-aware!),
RESET SESSION cannot. While this is inconsistent, it is intended
to catch programmer mistakes: RESET SESSION in an open transaction
block is probably unintended.

547b6e537a Fix plancache so that any required replanning is done with the same
search_path that was active when the plan was first made.  To do this,
improve namespace.c to support a stack of "override" search path settings
(we must have a stack since nested replan events are entirely possible).
This facility replaces the "special namespace" hack formerly used by
CREATE SCHEMA, and should be able to support per-function search path
settings as well.

54d20024c1 Fix some problems with selectivity estimation for partial indexes.
First, genericcostestimate() was being way too liberal about including
partial-index conditions in its selectivity estimate, resulting in
substantial underestimates for situations such as an indexqual "x = 42"
used with an index on x "WHERE x >= 40 AND x < 50".  While the code is
intentionally set up to favor selecting partial indexes when available,
this was too much...

Second, choose_bitmap_and() was likewise easily fooled by cases of this
type, since it would similarly think that the partial index had selectivity
independent of the indexqual.

Fixed by using predicate_implied_by() rather than simple equality checks
to determine redundancy.  This is a good deal more expensive but I don't
see much alternative.  At least the extra cost is only paid when there's
actually a partial index under consideration.

Per report from Jeff Davis.  I'm not going to risk back-patching this,
though.

c4fdfb8de3 Fix race condition in parallel regression tests. The new plancache test
was expecting there to be no regular table named 'foo', but it turns out
the rules test transiently creates one, so that plancache would sometimes
fail.  I couldn't reproduce that in quite a few tries here, but several
buildfarm machines have shown the failure.  Fix by renaming plancache's
temp table to something nonconflicting.

95f6d2d209 Make use of plancache module for SPI plans. In particular, since plpgsql
uses SPI plans, this finally fixes the ancient gotcha that you can't
drop and recreate a temp table used by a plpgsql function.

Along the way, clean up SPI's API a little bit by declaring SPI plan
pointers as "SPIPlanPtr" instead of "void *".  This is cosmetic but
helps to forestall simple programming mistakes.  (I have changed some
but not all of the callers to match; there are still some "void *"'s
in contrib and the PL's.  This is intentional so that we can see if
anyone's compiler complains about it.)

b9527e9840 First phase of plan-invalidation project: create a plan cache management
module and teach PREPARE and protocol-level prepared statements to use it.
In service of this, rearrange utility-statement processing so that parse
analysis does not assume table schemas can't change before execution for
utility statements (necessary because we don't attempt to re-acquire locks
for utility statements when reusing a stored plan).  This requires some
refactoring of the ProcessUtility API, but it ends up cleaner anyway,
for instance we can get rid of the QueryContext global.

Still to do: fix up SPI and related code to use the plan cache; I'm tempted to
try to make SQL functions use it too.  Also, there are at least some aspects
of system state that we want to ensure remain the same during a replan as in
the original processing; search_path certainly ought to behave that way for
instance, and perhaps there are others.

4ebb0cf9c3 Add two new format fields for use with to_char(), to_date() and
to_timestamp():
    - ID for day-of-week
    - IDDD for day-of-year

This makes it possible to convert ISO week dates to and from text
fully represented in either week ('IYYY-IW-ID') or day-of-year
('IYYY-IDDD') format.

I have also added an 'isoyear' field for use with extract / date_part.

6bef118b01 Restructure code that is responsible for ensuring that clauseless joins are
considered when it is necessary to do so because of a join-order restriction
(that is, an outer-join or IN-subselect construct).  The former coding was a
bit ad-hoc and inconsistent, and it missed some cases, as exposed by Mario
Weilguni's recent bug report.  His specific problem was that an IN could be
turned into a "clauseless" join due to constant-propagation removing the IN's
joinclause, and if the IN's subselect involved more than one relation and
there was more than one such IN linking to the same upper relation, then the
only valid join orders involve "bushy" plans but we would fail to consider the
specific paths needed to get there.  (See the example case added to the join
regression test.)  On examining the code I wonder if there weren't some other
problem cases too; in particular it seems that GEQO was defending against a
different set of corner cases than the main planner was.  There was also an
efficiency problem, in that when we did realize we needed a clauseless join
because of an IN, we'd consider clauseless joins against every other relation
whether this was sensible or not.  It seems a better design is to use the
outer-join and in-clause lists as a backup heuristic, just as the rule of
joining only where there are joinclauses is a heuristic: we'll join two
relations if they have a usable joinclause *or* this might be necessary to
satisfy an outer-join or IN-clause join order restriction.  I refactored the
code to have just one place considering this instead of three, and made sure
that it covered all the cases that any of them had been considering.

Backpatch as far as 8.1 (which has only the IN-clause form of the disease).
By rights 8.0 and 7.4 should have the bug too, but they accidentally fail
to fail, because the joininfo structure used in those releases preserves some
memory of there having once been a joinclause between the inner and outer
sides of an IN, and so it leads the code in the right direction anyway.
I'll be conservative and not touch them.

7bddca3450 Fix up foreign-key mechanism so that there is a sound semantic basis for the
equality checks it applies, instead of a random dependence on whatever
operators might be named "=".  The equality operators will now be selected
from the opfamily of the unique index that the FK constraint depends on to
enforce uniqueness of the referenced columns; therefore they are certain to be
consistent with that index's notion of equality.  Among other things this
should fix the problem noted awhile back that pg_dump may fail for foreign-key
constraints on user-defined types when the required operators aren't in the
search path.  This also means that the former warning condition about "foreign
key constraint will require costly sequential scans" is gone: if the
comparison condition isn't indexable then we'll reject the constraint
entirely. All per past discussions.

Along the way, make the RI triggers look into pg_constraint for their
information, instead of using pg_trigger.tgargs; and get rid of the always
error-prone fixed-size string buffers in ri_triggers.c in favor of building up
the RI queries in StringInfo buffers.

currently have any better strategy for this query than re-running the
sub-select over and over; it seems unlikely that doing so 10000 times
is a more useful test than doing it a few dozen times.

c398300330 Combine cmin and cmax fields of HeapTupleHeaders into a single field, by
keeping private state in each backend that has inserted and deleted the same
tuple during its current top-level transaction.  This is sufficient since
there is no need to be able to determine the cmin/cmax from any other
transaction.  This gets us back down to 23-byte headers, removing a penalty
paid in 8.0 to support subtransactions.  Patch by Heikki Linnakangas, with
minor revisions by moi, following a design hashed out awhile back on the
pghackers list.

aec4cf1c8c Add a function pg_stat_clear_snapshot() that discards any statistics snapshot
already collected in the current transaction; this allows plpgsql functions to
watch for stats updates even though they are confined to a single transaction.
Use this instead of the previous kluge involving pg_stat_file() to wait for
the stats collector to update in the stats regression test.  Internally,
decouple storage of stats snapshots from transaction boundaries; they'll
now stick around until someone calls pgstat_clear_snapshot --- which xact.c
still does at transaction end, to maintain the previous behavior.  This makes
the logic a lot cleaner, at the price of a couple dozen cycles per transaction
exit.

05ce7d6a41 Rewrite uuid input and output routines to avoid dependency on the
nonportable "hh" sprintf(3) length modifier. Instead, do the parsing
and output by hand. The code to do this isn't ideal, but this is
an interim measure anyway: the uuid type should probably use the
in-memory struct layout specified by RFC 4122. For now, this patch
should hopefully rectify the buildfarm failures for the uuid test.

Along the way, re-add pg_cast entries for uuid <-> varchar, which
I mistakenly removed earlier, and bump the catversion.

a534068e0e Add a new builtin type, "uuid". This implements a UUID type, similar to
that defined in RFC 4122. This patch includes the basic implementation,
plus regression tests. Documentation and perhaps some additional

5a7471c307 Add COST and ROWS options to CREATE/ALTER FUNCTION, plus underlying pg_proc
columns procost and prorows, to allow simple user adjustment of the estimated
cost of a function call, as well as control of the estimated number of rows
returned by a set-returning function.  We might eventually wish to extend this
to allow function-specific estimation routines, but there seems to be
consensus that we should try a simple constant estimate first.  In particular
this provides a relatively simple way to control the order in which different
WHERE clauses are applied in a plan node, which is a Good Thing in view of the
fact that the recent EquivalenceClass planner rewrite made that much less
predictable than before.

cf57ef4e50 Implement width_bucket() for the float8 data type.
The implementation is somewhat ugly logic-wise, but I don't see an
easy way to make it more concise.

When writing this, I noticed that my previous implementation of
width_bucket() doesn't handle NaN correctly:

    postgres=# select width_bucket('NaN', 1, 5, 5);
     width_bucket
    --------------
                6
    (1 row)

AFAICS SQL:2003 does not define a NaN value, so it doesn't address how
width_bucket() should behave here. The patch changes width_bucket() so
that ereport(ERROR) is raised if NaN is specified for the operand or the
lower or upper bounds to width_bucket(). For float8, NaN is disallowed
for any of the floating-point inputs, and +/- infinity is disallowed
for the histogram bounds (but allowed for the operand).

Update docs and regression tests, bump the catversion.

4431758229 Support ORDER BY ... NULLS FIRST/LAST, and add ASC/DESC/NULLS FIRST/NULLS LAST
per-column options for btree indexes.  The planner's support for this is still
pretty rudimentary; it does not yet know how to plan mergejoins with
nondefault ordering options.  The documentation is pretty rudimentary, too.
I'll work on improving that stuff later.

Note incompatible change from prior behavior: ORDER BY ... USING will now be
rejected if the operator is not a less-than or greater-than member of some
btree opclass.  This prevents less-than-sane behavior if an operator that
doesn't actually define a proper sort ordering is selected.

19749fb0cf Replace xmlroot with a properly functioning version that parses the value,
sets the items, and serializes the value back (rather than adding an
arbitrary number of XML preambles as before).

The libxml memory management via palloc had to be disabled because it
crashes when libxml tries to access memory that was helpfully freed
earlier by PostgreSQL.  This needs further thought.

valid result from a computation if one of the input values was infinity.
The previous code assumed an operation that returned infinity was an
overflow.

Handle underflow/overflow consistently, and add checks for aggregate
overflow.

Consistently prevent Inf/Nan from being cast to integer data types.

Fix INT_MIN % -1 to prevent overflow.

Update regression results for new error text.

a78fcfb512 Restructure operator classes to allow improved handling of cross-data-type
cases.  Operator classes now exist within "operator families".  While most
families are equivalent to a single class, related classes can be grouped
into one family to represent the fact that they are semantically compatible.
Cross-type operators are now naturally adjunct parts of a family, without
having to wedge them into a particular opclass as we had done originally.

This commit restructures the catalogs and cleans up enough of the fallout so
that everything still works at least as well as before, but most of the work
needed to actually improve the planner's behavior will come later.  Also,
there are not yet CREATE/DROP/ALTER OPERATOR FAMILY commands; the only way
to create a new family right now is to allow CREATE OPERATOR CLASS to make
one by default.  I owe some more documentation work, too.  But that can all
be done in smaller pieces once this infrastructure is in place.

022fd99668 Fix up some problems in handling of zic-style time zone names in datetime
input routines.  Remove the former "DecodePosixTimezone" function in favor of
letting the zic code handle POSIX-style zone specs (see tzparse()).  In
particular this means that "PST+3" now means the same as "-03", whereas it
used to mean "-11" --- the zone abbreviation is effectively just a noise word
in this syntax.  Make sure that all named and POSIX-style zone names will be
parsed as a single token.  Fix long-standing bogosities in printing and input
of fractional-hour timezone offsets (since the tzparse() code will accept
these, we'd better make 'em work).  Also correct an error in the original
coding of the zic-zone-name patch: in "timestamp without time zone" input,
zone names are supposed to be allowed but ignored, but the coding was such
that the zone changed the interpretation anyway.

352a56ba68 Allow assignment to array elements not contiguous with those already
present; intervening positions are filled with nulls.  This behavior
is required by SQL99 but was not implementable before 8.2 due to lack
of support for nulls in arrays.  I have only made it work for the
one-dimensional case, which is all that SQL99 requires.  It seems quite
complex to get it right in higher dimensions, and since we never allowed
extension at all in higher dimensions, I think that must count as a
future feature addition not a bug fix.

ba920e1c91 Rename contains/contained-by operators to @> and <@, per discussion that
agreed these symbols are less easily confused.  I made new pg_operator
entries (with new OIDs) for the old names, so as to provide backward
compatibility while making it pretty easy to remove the old names in
some future release cycle.  This commit only touches the core datatypes,
contrib will be fixed separately.

7bae5a289c Get rid of the separate RULE privilege for tables: now only a table's owner
can create or modify rules for the table.  Do setRuleCheckAsUser() while
loading rules into the relcache, rather than when defining a rule.  This
ensures that permission checks for tables referenced in a rule are done with
respect to the current owner of the rule's table, whereas formerly ALTER TABLE
OWNER would fail to update the permission checking for associated rules.
Removal of separate RULE privilege is needed to prevent various scenarios
in which a grantee of RULE privilege could effectively have any privilege
of the table owner.  For backwards compatibility, GRANT/REVOKE RULE is still
accepted, but it doesn't do anything.  Per discussion here:

917bbebf7f Apply a simple solution to the problem of making INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE
RETURNING play nice with views/rules.  To wit, have the rule rewriter
rewrite any RETURNING clause found in a rule to produce what the rule's
triggering query asked for in its RETURNING clause, in particular drop
the RETURNING clause if no RETURNING in the triggering query.  This
leaves the responsibility for knowing how to produce the view's output
columns on the rule author, without requiring any fundamental changes
in rule semantics such as adding new rule event types would do.  The
initial implementation constrains things to ensure that there is
exactly one, unconditionally invoked RETURNING clause among the rules
for an event --- later we might be able to relax that, but for a post
feature freeze fix it seems better to minimize how much invention we do.

2b2a50722c Fix all known problems with pg_dump's handling of serial sequences
by abandoning the idea that it should say SERIAL in the dump.  Instead,
dump serial sequences and column defaults just like regular ones.
Add a new backend command ALTER SEQUENCE OWNED BY to let pg_dump recreate
the sequence-to-column dependency that was formerly created "behind the
scenes" by SERIAL.  This restores SERIAL to being truly "just a macro"
consisting of component operations that can be stated explicitly in SQL.
Furthermore, the new command allows sequence ownership to be reassigned,
so that old mistakes can be cleaned up.

Also, downgrade the OWNED-BY dependency from INTERNAL to AUTO, since there
is no longer any very compelling argument why the sequence couldn't be
dropped while keeping the column.  (This forces initdb, to be sure the
right kinds of dependencies are in there.)

Along the way, add checks to prevent ALTER OWNER or SET SCHEMA on an
owned sequence; you can now only do this indirectly by changing the
owning table's owner or schema.  This is an oversight in previous
releases, but probably not worth back-patching.

well as vacuum_cost_delay.  Since datestyle is a string variable,
this exercises memory allocation issues that might not appear when
modifying an integer GUC variable.  Also, we can observe the side
effects of changing datestyle to check that assign hooks are called
at the right times.

108fe47301 Aggregate functions now support multiple input arguments. I also took
the opportunity to treat COUNT(*) as a zero-argument aggregate instead
of the old hack that equated it to COUNT(1); this is materially cleaner
(no more weird ANYOID cases) and ought to be at least a tiny bit faster.

d8b5c95ca8 Remove hard-wired lists of timezone abbreviations in favor of providing
configuration files that can be altered by a DBA.  The australian_timezones
GUC setting disappears, replaced by a timezone_abbreviations setting (set this
to 'Australia' to get the effect of australian_timezones).  The list of zone
names defined by default has undergone a bit of cleanup, too.  Documentation
still needs some work --- in particular, should we fix Table B-4, or just get

84e6042725 Make pg_regress a tad simpler and more general-purpose by removing its
code to forcibly drop regressuser[1-4] and regressgroup[1-2].  Instead,
let the privileges.sql test do that for itself (this is made easy by
the recent addition of DROP ROLE IF EXISTS).  Per a recent patch proposed
by Joachim Wieland --- the rest of his patch is superseded by the
rewrite into C, but this is a good idea we should adopt.

8c092781f4 ALTER TABLE ... ADD/DROPS INHERIT (actually INHERIT / NO INHERIT)
Open items:

There were a few tangentially related issues that have come up that I think
are TODOs. I'm likely to tackle one or two of these next so I'm interested in
hearing feedback on them as well.

. Constraints currently do not know anything about inheritance. Tom suggested
  adding a coninhcount and conislocal like attributes have to track their
  inheritance status.

. Foreign key constraints currently do not get copied to new children (and
  therefore my code doesn't verify them). I don't think it would be hard to
  add them and treat them like CHECK constraints.

. No constraints at all are copied to tables defined with LIKE. That makes it
  hard to use LIKE to define new partitions. The standard defines LIKE and
  specifically says it does not copy constraints. But the standard already has
  an option called INCLUDING DEFAULTS; we could always define a non-standard
  extension LIKE table INCLUDING CONSTRAINTS that gives the user the option to
  request a copy including constraints.

. Personally, I think the whole attislocal thing is bunk. The decision about
  whether to drop a column from children tables or not is something that
  should be up to the user and trying to DWIM based on whether there was ever
  a local definition or the column was acquired purely through inheritance is
  hardly ever going to match up with user expectations.

. And of course there's the whole unique and primary key constraint issue. I
  think to get any traction at all on this you have a prerequisite of a real
  partitioned table implementation where the system knows what the partition
  key is so it can recognize when it's a leading part of an index key.

ca0d2197ca Change the row constructor syntax (ROW(...)) so that list elements foo.*
will be expanded to a list of their member fields, rather than creating
a nested rowtype field as formerly.  (The old behavior is still available
by omitting '.*'.)  This syntax is not allowed by the SQL spec AFAICS,
so changing its behavior doesn't violate the spec.  The new behavior is
substantially more useful since it allows, for example, triggers to check
for data changes with 'if row(new.*) is distinct from row(old.*)'.  Per
my recent proposal.

f1e671a0b4 Increase timeout in statement_timeout test from 1 second to 2 seconds.
We have once or twice seen failures suggesting that control didn't get
to the exception block before the timeout elapsed, which is unlikely
but not impossible in a parallel regression test (with a dozen other
backends competing for cycles).  This change doesn't completely prevent
the problem of course, but it should reduce the probability enough that
we don't see it anymore.  Per buildfarm results.

7fdb4305db Fix a bunch of problems with domains by making them use special input functions
that apply the necessary domain constraint checks immediately.  This fixes
cases where domain constraints went unchecked for statement parameters,
PL function local variables and results, etc.  We can also eliminate existing
special cases for domains in places that had gotten it right, eg COPY.

Also, allow domains over domains (base of a domain is another domain type).

4fb92718be Fix plpgsql to pass only one copy of any given plpgsql variable into a SQL
command or expression, rather than one copy for each textual occurrence as
it did before.  This might result in some small performance improvement,
but the compelling reason to do it is that not doing so can result in
unexpected grouping failures because the main SQL parser won't see different
parameter numbers as equivalent.  Add a regression test for the failure case.

b3358e2642 Fix bug introduced into mergejoin logic by performance improvement patch of
2005-05-13.  When we find that a new inner tuple can't possibly match any
outer tuple (because it contains a NULL), we can't immediately skip the
tuple when we are in NEXTINNER state.  Doing so can lead to emitting
multiple copies of the tuple in FillInner mode, because we may rescan the
tuple after returning to a previous marked tuple.  Instead, proceed to
NEXTOUTER state the same as we used to do.  After we've found that there's
no need to return to the marked position, we can go to SKIPINNER_ADVANCE
state instead of SKIP_TEST when the inner tuple is unmatchable; this
preserves the performance improvement.  Per bug report from Bruce.
I also made a couple of cosmetic code rearrangements and added a regression
test for the problem.

0ebf1cc834 Implement 4 new aggregate functions from SQL2003. Specifically: var_pop(),
var_samp(), stddev_pop(), and stddev_samp(). var_samp() and stddev_samp()
are just renamings of the historical Postgres aggregates variance() and
stddev() -- the latter names have been kept for backward compatibility.
This patch includes updates for the documentation and regression tests.
The catversion has been bumped.

NB: SQL2003 requires that DISTINCT not be specified for any of these
aggregates. Per discussion on -patches, I have NOT implemented this
restriction: if the user asks for stddev(DISTINCT x), presumably they
know what they are doing.

012abebab1 Remove the stub support we had for UNION JOIN; per discussion, this is
not likely ever to be implemented seeing it's been removed from SQL2003.
This allows getting rid of the 'filter' version of yylex() that we had in
parser.c, which should save at least a few microseconds in parsing.

d69b163247 Attached is the new patch. To summarize:
- new function justify_interval(interval)
   - modified function justify_hours(interval)
   - modified function justify_days(interval)

These functions are defined to meet the requirements as discussed in
this thread.  Specifically:

   - justify_hours makes certain the sign bit on the hours
     matches the sign bit on the days.  It only checks the
     sign bit on the days, and not the months, when
     determining if the hours should be positive or negative.
     After the call, -24 < hours < 24.

   - justify_days makes certain the sign bit on the days
     matches the sign bit on the months.  It's behavior does
     not depend on the hours, nor does it modify the hours.
     After the call, -30 < days < 30.

   - justify_interval makes sure the sign bits on all three
     fields months, days, and hours are all the same.  After
     the call, -24 < hours < 24 AND -30 < days < 30.

8e68d78390 Allow the syntax CREATE TYPE foo, with no parameters, to permit explicit
creation of a shell type.  This allows a less hacky way of dealing with
the mutual dependency between a datatype and its I/O functions: make a
shell type, then make the functions, then define the datatype fully.
We should fix pg_dump to handle things this way, but this commit just deals
with the backend.

1b658473ea Add support for Windows codepages 1253, 1254, 1255, and 1257 and clean
up a bunch of the support utilities.

In src/backend/utils/mb/Unicode remove nearly duplicate copies of the
UCS_to_XXX perl script and replace with one version to handle all generic
files.  Update the Makefile so that it knows about all the map files.
This produces a slight difference in some of the map files, using a
uniform naming convention and not mapping the null character.

In src/backend/utils/mb/conversion_procs create a master utf8<->win
codepage function like the ISO 8859 versions instead of having a separate
handler for each conversion.

There is an externally visible change in the name of the win1258 to utf8
conversion.  According to the documentation notes, it was named
incorrectly and this changes it to a standard name.

Running the Unicode mapping perl scripts has shown some additional mapping
changes in koi8r and iso8859-7.

8d8bf12760 Clean up the INET-vs-CIDR situation. Get rid of the internal is_cidr flag
and rely exclusively on the SQL type system to tell the difference between
the types.  Prevent creation of invalid CIDR values via casting from INET
or set_masklen() --- both of these operations now silently zero any bits
to the right of the netmask.  Remove duplicate CIDR comparison operators,
letting the type rely on the INET operators instead.

33e06ebccb Add a new system view, pg_cursors, that displays the currently available
cursors. Patch from Joachim Wieland, review and ediorialization by Neil
Conway. The view lists cursors defined by DECLARE CURSOR, using SPI, or
via the Bind message of the frontend/backend protocol. This means the
view does not list the unnamed portal or the portal created to implement
EXECUTE. Because we do list SPI portals, there might be more rows in
this view than you might expect if you are using SPI implicitly (e.g.
via a procedural language).

Per recent discussion on -hackers, the query string included in the
view for cursors defined by DECLARE CURSOR is based on
debug_query_string. That means it is not accurate if multiple queries
separated by semicolons are submitted as one query string. However,
there doesn't seem a trivial fix for that: debug_query_string
is better than nothing. I also changed SPI_cursor_open() to include
the source text for the portal it creates: AFAICS there is no reason
not to do this.

Update the documentation and regression tests, bump the catversion.

44b928e876 Add a new system view, pg_prepared_statements, that can be used to
access information about the prepared statements that are available
in the current session. Original patch from Joachim Wieland, various
improvements by Neil Conway.

The "statement" column of the view contains the literal query string
sent by the client, without any rewriting or pretty printing. This
means that prepared statements created via SQL will be prefixed with
"PREPARE ... AS ", whereas those prepared via the FE/BE protocol will
not. That is unfortunate, but discussion on -patches did not yield an
efficient way to improve this, and there is some merit in returning
exactly what the client sent to the backend.

Catalog version bumped, regression tests updated.

6e07709760 Implement SQL-compliant treatment of row comparisons for < <= > >= cases
(previously we only did = and <> correctly).  Also, allow row comparisons
with any operators that are in btree opclasses, not only those with these
specific names.  This gets rid of a whole lot of indefensible assumptions
about the behavior of particular operators based on their names ... though
it's still true that IN and NOT IN expand to "= ANY".  The patch adds a
RowCompareExpr expression node type, and makes some changes in the
representation of ANY/ALL/ROWCOMPARE SubLinks so that they can share code
with RowCompareExpr.

I have not yet done anything about making RowCompareExpr an indexable
operator, but will look at that soon.

unconditionally; 8.1 tries to do it only when needed, but was missing a

cec3b0a9e6 Implement DROP OWNED and REASSIGN OWNED. These new commands facilitate the
process of dropping roles by dropping objects owned by them and privileges
granted to them, or giving the owned objects to someone else, through the
use of the data stored in the new pg_shdepend catalog.

Some refactoring of the GRANT/REVOKE code was needed, as well as ALTER OWNER
code.  Further cleanup of code duplication in the GRANT code seems necessary.

Implemented by me after an idea from Tom Lane, who also provided various kind
of implementation advice.

Regression tests pass.  Some tests for the new functionality are also added,
as well as rudimentary documentation.

cecb607559 Make SQL arrays support null elements. This commit fixes the core array
functionality, but I still need to make another pass looking at places
that incidentally use arrays (such as ACL manipulation) to make sure they
are null-safe.  Contrib needs work too.
I have not changed the behaviors that are still under discussion about
array comparison and what to do with lower bounds.

cb8b6618ce Revise pgstats stuff to fix the problems with not counting accesses
generated by bitmap index scans.  Along the way, simplify and speed up
the code for counting sequential and index scans; it was both confusing
and inefficient to be taking care of that in the per-tuple loops, IMHO.

aa731ed843 Change nextval and other sequence functions to specify their sequence
argument as a 'regclass' value instead of a text string.  The frontend
conversion of text string to pg_class OID is now encapsulated as an
implicitly-invocable coercion from text to regclass.  This provides
backwards compatibility to the old behavior when the sequence argument
is explicitly typed as 'text'.  When the argument is just an unadorned
literal string, it will be taken as 'regclass', which means that the
stored representation will be an OID.  This solves longstanding problems
with renaming sequences that are referenced in default expressions, as
well as new-in-8.1 problems with renaming such sequences' schemas or
moving them to another schema.  All per recent discussion.
Along the way, fix some rather serious problems in dbmirror's support
for mirroring sequence operations (int4 vs int8 confusion for instance).

33f5bf9700 ALTER TABLE OWNER must change the ownership of the table's rowtype too.
This was not especially critical before, but it is now that we track
ownership dependencies --- the dependency for the rowtype *must* shift
to the new owner.  Spotted by Bernd Helmle.
Also fix a problem introduced by recent change to allow non-superusers
to do ALTER OWNER in some cases: if the table had a toast table, ALTER
OWNER failed *even for superusers*, because the test being applied would
conclude that the new would-be owner had no create rights on pg_toast.
A side-effect of the fix is to disallow changing the ownership of indexes
or toast tables separately from their parent table, which seems a good
idea on the whole.

d78397d301 Change typreceive function API so that receive functions get the same
optional arguments as text input functions, ie, typioparam OID and
atttypmod.  Make all the datatypes that use typmod enforce it the same
way in typreceive as they do in typinput.  This fixes a problem with
failure to enforce length restrictions during COPY FROM BINARY.

Replace string that matches to regular expression in source text to

 - pattern is regular expression pattern.
 - replacement is replace string that can use '\1'-'\9', and '\&'.
    '\1'-'\9': back reference to the n'th subexpression.
    '\&'     : entire matched string.
 - flags can use the following values:
    g: global (replace all)
    i: ignore case
    When the flags is not specified, case sensitive, replace the first
    instance only.

I took the opportunity to add an rtree-equivalent gist opclass for
circles; the contrib version only covered boxes and polygons, but

b90f8f20f0 Extend r-tree operator classes to handle Y-direction tests equivalent
to the existing X-direction tests.  An rtree class now includes 4 actual
2-D tests, 4 1-D X-direction tests, and 4 1-D Y-direction tests.
This involved adding four new Y-direction test operators for each of
box and polygon; I followed the PostGIS project's lead as to the names
of these operators.
NON BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE CHANGE: the poly_overleft (&<) and poly_overright
(&>) operators now have semantics comparable to box_overleft and box_overright.
This is necessary to make r-tree indexes work correctly on polygons.
Also, I changed circle_left and circle_right to agree with box_left and
box_right --- formerly they allowed the boundaries to touch.  This isn't
actually essential given the lack of any r-tree opclass for circles, but
it seems best to sync all the definitions while we are at it.

738df437b2 Fix bug in CONTINUE statement for PL/pgSQL: when we continue a loop,
we need to be careful to reset rc to PLPGSQL_RC_OK, depending on how
the loop's logic is structured. If we continue a loop but it then
exits without executing the loop's body again, we want to return
PLPGSQL_RC_OK to our caller.  Enhance the regression tests to catch

d46bc444ac Implement two new special variables in PL/PgSQL: SQLSTATE and SQLERRM.
These contain the SQLSTATE and error message of the current exception,
respectively. They are scope-local variables that are only defined
in exception handlers (so attempting to reference them outside an
exception handler is an error). Update the regression tests and the
documentation.

Also, do some minor related cleanup: export an unpack_sql_state()
function from the backend and use it to unpack a SQLSTATE into a
string, and add a free_var() function to pl_exec.c

77c168a836 Remove grammar productions for prefix and postfix % and ^ operators,

adfeef55cb When enqueueing after-row triggers for updates of a table with a foreign
key, compare the new and old row versions. If the foreign key column has
not changed, we needn't enqueue the trigger, since the update cannot
violate the foreign key. This optimization was previously applied in the
RI trigger function, but it is more efficient to avoid firing the trigger
altogether. Per recent discussion on pgsql-hackers.

Also add a regression test for some unintuitive foreign key behavior, and
refactor some code that deals with the OIDs of the various RI trigger
functions.

63e0d612f5 Adjust datetime parsing to be more robust. We now pass the length of the
working buffer into ParseDateTime() and reject too-long input there,
rather than checking the length of the input string before calling
ParseDateTime(). The old method was bogus because ParseDateTime() can use
a variable amount of working space, depending on the content of the
input string (e.g. how many fields need to be NUL terminated). This fixes
a minor stack overrun -- I don't _think_ it's exploitable, although I
won't claim to be an expert.

Along the way, fix a bug reported by Mark Dilger: the working buffer
allocated by interval_in() was too short, which resulted in rejecting
some perfectly valid interval input values. I added a regression test for
this fix.

bc843d3960 First cut at planner support for bitmap index scans. Lots to do yet,
but the code is basically working.  Along the way, rewrite the entire
approach to processing OR index conditions, and make it work in join
cases for the first time ever.  orindxpath.c is now basically obsolete,
but I left it in for the time being to allow easy comparison testing
against the old implementation.

2e7a68896b Add aggsortop column to pg_aggregate, so that MIN/MAX optimization can
be supported for all datatypes.  Add CREATE AGGREGATE and pg_dump support
too.  Add specialized min/max aggregates for bpchar, instead of depending
on text's min/max, because otherwise the possible use of bpchar indexes
cannot be recognized.

f5ab0a14ea Add a "USING" clause to DELETE, which is equivalent to the FROM clause
in UPDATE. We also now issue a NOTICE if a query has _any_ implicit
range table entries -- in the past, we would only warn about implicit
RTEs in SELECTs with at least one explicit RTE.

As a result of the warning change, 25 of the regression tests had to
be updated. I also took the opportunity to remove some bogus whitespace
differences between some of the float4 and float8 variants. I believe
I have correctly updated all the platform-specific variants, but let
me know if that's not the case.

70c9763d48 Convert oidvector and int2vector into variable-length arrays. This
change saves a great deal of space in pg_proc and its primary index,
and it eliminates the former requirement that INDEX_MAX_KEYS and
FUNC_MAX_ARGS have the same value.  INDEX_MAX_KEYS is still embedded
in the on-disk representation (because it affects index tuple header
size), but FUNC_MAX_ARGS is not.  I believe it would now be possible
to increase FUNC_MAX_ARGS at little cost, but haven't experimented yet.
There are still a lot of vestigial references to FUNC_MAX_ARGS, which
I will clean up in a separate pass.  However, getting rid of it
altogether would require changing the FunctionCallInfoData struct,
and I'm not sure I want to buy into that.

c069655441 Allow ALTER FUNCTION to change a function's strictness, volatility, and
whether or not it is a security definer. Changing a function's strictness
is required by SQL2003, and the other capabilities make sense. Also, allow
an optional RESTRICT noise word to be specified, for SQL conformance.

Some trivial regression tests added and the documentation has been
updated.

595ed2a855 Make the behavior of HAVING without GROUP BY conform to the SQL spec.
Formerly, if such a clause contained no aggregate functions we mistakenly
treated it as equivalent to WHERE.  Per spec it must cause the query to
be treated as a grouped query of a single group, the same as appearance
of aggregate functions would do.  Also, the HAVING filter must execute
after aggregate function computation even if it itself contains no
aggregate functions.

5a9dd0dc4f This patch changes makes some significant changes to how compilation
and parsing work in PL/PgSQL:

- memory management is now done via palloc(). The compiled representation
  of each function now has its own memory context. Therefore, the storage
  consumed by a function can be reclaimed via MemoryContextDelete().

  During compilation, the CurrentMemoryContext is the function's memory
  context. This means that a palloc() is sufficient to allocate memory
  that will have the same lifetime as the function itself. As a result,
  code invoked during compilation should be careful to pfree() temporary
  allocations to avoid leaking memory. Since a lot of the code in the
  backend is not careful about releasing palloc'ed memory, that means
  we should switch into a temporary memory context before invoking
  backend functions. A temporary context appropriate for such allocations
  is `compile_tmp_cxt'.

- The ability to use palloc() allows us to simply a lot of the code in
  the parser. Rather than representing lists of elements via ad hoc
  linked lists or arrays, we can use the List type. Rather than doing
  malloc followed by memset(0), we can just use palloc0().

- We now check that the user has supplied the right number of parameters
  to a RAISE statement. Supplying either too few or too many results in
  an error (at runtime).

- PL/PgSQL's parser needs to accept arbitrary SQL statements. Since we
  do not want to duplicate the SQL grammar in the PL/PgSQL grammar, this
  means we need to be quite lax in what the PL/PgSQL grammar considers
  a "SQL statement". This can lead to misleading behavior if there is a
  syntax error in the function definition, since we assume a malformed
  PL/PgSQL construct is a SQL statement. Furthermore, these errors were
  only detected at runtime (when we tried to execute the alleged "SQL
  statement" via SPI).

  To rectify this, the patch changes the parser to invoke the main SQL
  parser when it sees a string it believes to be a SQL expression. This
  means that synctically-invalid SQL will be rejected during the
  compilation of the PL/PgSQL function. This is only done when compiling
  for "validation" purposes (i.e. at CREATE FUNCTION time), so it should
  not impose a runtime overhead.

- Fixes for the various buffer overruns I've patched in stable branches
  in the past few weeks. I've rewritten code where I thought it was
  warranted (unlike the patches applied to older branches, which were
  minimally invasive).

- Various other minor changes and cleanups.

- Updates to the regression tests.

was in 7.4.  Also, avoid constant-folding result expressions that are
certainly unreachable --- the former coding was a bit cavalier about this
and could generate unexpected results for all-constant CASE expressions.

4e91824b94 Make some adjustments to reduce platform dependencies in plan selection.
In particular, there was a mathematical tie between the two possible
nestloop-with-materialized-inner-scan plans for a join (ie, we computed
the same cost with either input on the inside), resulting in a roundoff
error driven choice, if the relations were both small enough to fit in
sort_mem.  Add a small cost factor to ensure we prefer materializing the
smaller input.  This changes several regression test plans, but with any
luck we will now have more stability across platforms.

7efa8411cc Rethink plpgsql's way of handling SPI execution during an exception block.
We don't really want to start a new SPI connection, just keep using the old
one; otherwise we have memory management problems as illustrated by
John Kennedy's bug report of today.  This requires a bit of a hack to
ensure the SPI stack state is properly restored, but then again what we
were doing before was a hack too, strictly speaking.  Add a regression
test to cover this case.

b2c4071299 Redesign query-snapshot timing so that volatile functions in READ COMMITTED
mode see a fresh snapshot for each command in the function, rather than
using the latest interactive command's snapshot.  Also, suppress fresh
snapshots as well as CommandCounterIncrement inside STABLE and IMMUTABLE
functions, instead using the snapshot taken for the most closely nested
regular query.  (This behavior is only sane for read-only functions, so
the patch also enforces that such functions contain only SELECT commands.)
As per my proposal of 6-Sep-2004; I note that I floated essentially the
same proposal on 19-Jun-2002, but that discussion tailed off without any
action.  Since 8.0 seems like the right place to be taking possibly
nontrivial backwards compatibility hits, let's get it done now.

b339d1fff6 Fire non-deferred AFTER triggers immediately upon query completion,
rather than when returning to the idle loop.  This makes no particular
difference for interactively-issued queries, but it makes a big difference
for queries issued within functions: trigger execution now occurs before
the calling function is allowed to proceed.  This responds to numerous
complaints about nonintuitive behavior of foreign key checking, such as
http://archives.postgresql.org/pgsql-bugs/2004-09/msg00020.php, and
appears to be required by the SQL99 spec.
Also take the opportunity to simplify the data structures used for the
pending-trigger list, rename them for more clarity, and squeeze out a
bit of space.

Please find a submission attached. I hope it really fixes all decade,
century and millenium issues for extract and *_trunc functions on
interval
and other timestamp types. If someone could check that the results
are reasonnable, it would be great.

I indeed overlooked the fact that there were two functions. The patch
fixes the code so that both variants agree.

I added comments to interval extractions, because it relies on the C
division to have a negative remainder: -7/10 = 0 and remains -7.

As for *_trunc functions, I have chosen to put the first year of the
century or millennium: -100, 1, 101... 1001 2001 etc. Indeed, I don't
think it would make sense to put 2000 (last year of the 2nd millennium)
for rounding all years of the third millenium.

I also fixed the code so that all decades last 10 years and decade 199
means the 1990's.

I have added some tests that are relevant to deal with tricky cases. The
formula may be simplified, but all these cases must pass. Please keep
them.

0e13d627be Require that array literals produce "rectangular" arrays, i.e. all the
subarrays of a given dimension have the same number of elements/subarrays.

Also repair a longstanding undocumented (as far as I can see) ability to
explicitly set array bounds in the array literal syntax. It now can
deal properly with negative array indicies. Modify array_out so that
arrays with non-standard lower bounds (i.e. not 1) are output with
the expicit dimension syntax. This fixes a longstanding issue whereby
arrays with non-default lower bounds had them changed to default
after a dump/reload cycle.

Modify regression tests and docs to suit, and add some minimal
documentation regarding the explicit dimension syntax.

f622c54049 Allow DECLARE CURSOR to take parameters from the portal in which it is
executed.  Previously, the DECLARE would succeed but subsequent FETCHes
would fail since the parameter values supplied to DECLARE were not
propagated to the portal created for the cursor.
In support of this, add type Oids to ParamListInfo entries, which seems
like a good idea anyway since code that extracts a value can double-check
that it got the type of value it was expecting.

fe548629c5 Invent ResourceOwner mechanism as per my recent proposal, and use it to
keep track of portal-related resources separately from transaction-related
resources.  This allows cursors to work in a somewhat sane fashion with
nested transactions.  For now, cursor behavior is non-subtransactional,
that is a cursor's state does not roll back if you abort a subtransaction
that fetched from the cursor.  We might want to change that later.

e34082ee3b Add missing operators of the form interval-plus-datetime, as required for
better SQL compliance in this area, per recent discussion.  Mark related
operators as commutators where possible.  (The system doesn't actually care
about commutator marking for operators not returning boolean, at the moment,
but this seems forward-thinking and besides it made it easier to verify
that we hadn't missed any.)
Also, remove interval-minus-time and interval-minus-timetz operators.
I'm not sure how these got in, but they are nonstandard and had very
obviously broken behavior.  (minus is not commutative in anyone's book.)
I doubt anyone had ever used 'em, because we'd surely have gotten a bug
report about it if so.

d70a42e642 Represent type-specific length coercion functions as pg_cast entries,
eliminating the former hard-wired convention about their names.  Allow
pg_cast entries to represent both type coercion and length coercion in
a single step --- this is represented by a function that takes an
extra typmod argument, just like a length coercion function.  This
nicely merges the type and length coercion mechanisms into something
at least a little cleaner than we had before.  Make use of the single-
coercion-step behavior to fix integer-to-bit coercion so that coercing
to bit(n) yields the rightmost n bits of the integer instead of the
leftmost n bits.  This should fix recurrent complaints about the odd
behavior of this coercion.  Clean up the documentation of the bit string
functions, and try to put it where people might actually find it.
Also, get rid of the unreliable heuristics in ruleutils.c about whether
to display nested coercion steps; instead require parse_coerce.c to
label them properly in the first place.

45616f5bbb Clean up generation of default names for constraints, indexes, and serial
sequences, as per recent discussion.  All these names are now of the
form table_column_type, with digits added if needed to make them unique.
Default constraint names are chosen to be unique across their whole schema,
not just within the parent object, so as to be more SQL-spec-compatible
and make the information schema views more useful.

7e64dbc6b5 Support assignment to subfields of composite columns in UPDATE and INSERT.
As a side effect, cause subscripts in INSERT targetlists to do something
more or less sensible; previously we evaluated such subscripts and then
effectively ignored them.  Another side effect is that UPDATE-ing an
element or slice of an array value that is NULL now produces a non-null
result, namely an array containing just the assigned-to positions.

19e3bdd6c7 Minor catalog cleanups for composite-type stuff. Adjust signatures shown
in pg_proc for record_in, record_out, etc to reflect that these routines
now make use of the second OID parameter.  Remove the ancient SET entry
in pg_type, which is now highly unlikely to ever become used again.
Adjust type_sanity regression test to match.

8096fe45ce The added aggregates are:
(1) boolean-and and boolean-or aggregates named bool_and and bool_or.
    they (SHOULD;-) correspond to standard sql every and some/any aggregates.
    they do not have the right name as there is a problem with
    the standard and the parser for some/any. Tom also think that
    the standard name is misleading because NULL are ignored.
    Also add 'every' aggregate.

(2) bitwise integer aggregates named bit_and and bit_or for
    int2, int4, int8 and bit types. They are not standard, but I find
    them useful. I needed them once.


The patches adds:

- 2 new very short strict functions for boolean aggregates in
  src/backed/utils/adt/bool.c,
  src/include/utils/builtins.h and src/include/catalog/pg_proc.h

- the new aggregates declared in src/include/catalog/pg_proc.h and
  src/include/catalog/pg_aggregate.h

- some documentation and validation about these new aggregates.

0079547bcb Implement the width_bucket() function, per SQL2003. This commit only adds
a variant of the function for the 'numeric' datatype; it would be possible
to add additional variants for other datatypes, but I haven't done so yet.

This commit includes regression tests and minimal documentation; if we
want developers to actually use this function in applications, we'll
probably need to document what it does more fully.

1697568d57 Repair recalculation failure for nested sub-SELECTs, per bug report from
Didier Moens.  Bug is new in 7.4, and was caused by not updating everyplace
I should've when replacing locParam markers by allParam.
Add a regression test to catch related errors in future.

077db40fa1 ALTER TABLE rewrite. New cool stuff:
* ALTER ... ADD COLUMN with defaults and NOT NULL constraints works per SQL
spec.  A default is implemented by rewriting the table with the new value
stored in each row.

* ALTER COLUMN TYPE.  You can change a column's datatype to anything you
want, so long as you can specify how to convert the old value.  Rewrites
the table.  (Possible future improvement: optimize no-op conversions such
as varchar(N) to varchar(N+1).)

* Multiple ALTER actions in a single ALTER TABLE command.  You can perform
any number of column additions, type changes, and constraint additions with
only one pass over the table contents.

Basic documentation provided in ALTER TABLE ref page, but some more docs
work is needed.

fc7fd50182 Add ceiling() as an alias for ceil(), and power() as an alias for pow().
Regression tests and documentation have both been updated.

SQL2003 requires that both ceiling() and ceil() be present, so I have
documented both spellings. SQL2003 doesn't mention pow() as far as I
can see, so I decided to replace pow() with power() in the documentation:
there is little reason to encourage the continued usage of a function
that isn't compliant with the standard, given a standard-compliant
alternative.

RELEASE NOTES: should state that pow() is considered deprecated
(although I don't see the need to ever remove it.)

1934055cbe Please find a small patch to fix the brain damage "century" and
"millennium" date part implementation in postgresql, both in the code
and the documentation, so that it conforms to the official definition.
If you do not agree with the official definition, please send your
complaint to "pope@vatican.org". I'm not responsible for them;-)

With the previous version, the centuries and millenniums had a wrong
number and started the wrong year. Moreover century number 0, which does
not exist in reality, lasted 200 years. Also, millennium number 0 lasted
2000 years.

If you want postgresql to have it's own definition of "century" and
"millennium" that does not conform to the one of the society, just give
them another name. I would suggest "pgCENTURY" and "pgMILLENNIUM";-)

IMO, if someone may use the options, it means that postgresql is used for
historical data, so it make sense to have an historical definition. Also,
I just want to divide the year by 100 or 1000, I can do that quite easily.

24614a9880 Upgrade ALTER TABLE DROP COLUMN so that it can drop an OID column, and
remove separate implementation of ALTER TABLE SET WITHOUT OIDS in favor
of doing a regular DROP.  Also, cause CREATE TABLE to account completely
correctly for the inheritance status of the OID column.  This fixes
problems with dropping OID columns that have dependencies, as noted by
Christopher Kings-Lynne, as well as making sure that you can't drop an
OID column that was inherited from a parent.

89ab5c4abf Remove grotty special-case code in coerce_to_target_type() that
implemented casts to varchar and bpchar using a cast-to-text function.
This is a holdover from before we had pg_cast; it now makes more sense
to just list these casts in pg_cast.  While at it, add pg_cast entries
for the other direction (casts from varchar/bpchar) where feasible.

bfd6f52b0e Allow 'Infinity' and '-Infinity' as input to the float4 and float8
types. Update the regression tests and the documentation to reflect
this. Remove the UNSAFE_FLOATS #ifdef.

This is only half the story: we still unconditionally reject
floating point operations that result in +/- infinity. See
recent thread on -hackers for more information.

e2ded829f6 Revise int2/int4/int8/float4/float8 input routines to allow for
any amount of leading or trailing whitespace (where "whitespace"
is defined by isspace()). This is for SQL conformance, as well
as consistency with other numeric types (e.g. oid, numeric).

Also refactor pg_atoi() to avoid looking at errno where not
necessary, and add a bunch of regression tests for the input
to these types.

98dcf085e3 Implement "WITH / WITHOID OIDS" clause for CREATE TABLE AS. This is
intended to allow application authors to insulate themselves from
changes to the default value of 'default_with_oids' in future releases
of PostgreSQL.

This patch also fixes a bug in the earlier implementation of the
'default_with_oids' GUC variable: code in gram.y should not examine
the value of GUC variables directly due to synchronization issues.

7ce9b7c0d8 This patch adds a new GUC var, "default_with_oids", which follows the
proposal for eventually deprecating OIDs on user tables that I posted
earlier to pgsql-hackers. pg_dump now always specifies WITH OIDS or
WITHOUT OIDS when dumping a table. The documentation has been updated.

04a4821ade Attached is a patch implementing factorial(), returning numeric. Points
to note:

1) arttype is numeric. I thought this was the best way of allowing
arbitarily large factorials, even though factorial(2^63) is a large
number. Happy to change to integers if this is overkill.
2) since we're accepting numeric arguments, the patch tests for floats.
If a numeric is passed with non-zero decimal portion, an error is raised
since (from memory) they are undefined.

42ce74bf17 COMMENT ON casts, conversions, languages, operator classes, and
large objects.  Dump all these in pg_dump; also add code to pg_dump
user-defined conversions.  Make psql's large object code rely on
the backend for inserting/deleting LOB comments, instead of trying to
hack pg_description directly.  Documentation and regression tests added.

fa5c8a055a Cross-data-type comparisons are now indexable by btrees, pursuant to my
pghackers proposal of 8-Nov.  All the existing cross-type comparison
operators (int2/int4/int8 and float4/float8) have appropriate support.
The original proposal of storing the right-hand-side datatype as part of
the primary key for pg_amop and pg_amproc got modified a bit in the event;
it is easier to store zero as the 'default' case and only store a nonzero
when the operator is actually cross-type.  Along the way, remove the
long-since-defunct bigbox_ops operator class.

1e100176c4 This patch adds a new regression test for the UPDATE command. Right
now all that is tested is Rod Taylor's recent addition to allow
this syntax:

    UPDATE ... SET <col> = DEFAULT;

If anyone else would like to add more UPDATE tests, go ahead --
I just wanted to write a test for the above functionality, and
couldn't see an existing test that it would be appropriate
to add to.

ec646dbc65 Create a 'type cache' that keeps track of the data needed for any particular
datatype by array_eq and array_cmp; use this to solve problems with memory
leaks in array indexing support.  The parser's equality_oper and ordering_oper
routines also use the cache.  Change the operator search algorithms to look
for appropriate btree or hash index opclasses, instead of assuming operators
named '<' or '=' have the right semantics.  (ORDER BY ASC/DESC now also look
at opclasses, instead of assuming '<' and '>' are the right things.)  Add
several more index opclasses so that there is no regression in functionality
for base datatypes.  initdb forced due to catalog additions.

9c2a7c2269 Apply (a somewhat revised version of) Greg Mullane's patch to eliminate
heuristic determination of day vs month in date/time input.  Add the
ability to specify that input is interpreted as yy-mm-dd order (which
formerly worked, but only for yy greater than 31).  DateStyle's input
component now has the preferred spellings DMY, MDY, or YMD; the older
keywords European and US are now aliases for the first two of these.

In the first case, enable_seqscan is set to its default value. After

that the regression tests for foreign keys didn't seem to test
a deferred constraint that was not satisified by a later
statement and was not made immediate by set constraints,
so here's a simple added test with a single invalid insert and

bee217924d Support expressions of the form 'scalar op ANY (array)' and
'scalar op ALL (array)', where the operator is applied between the
lefthand scalar and each element of the array.  The operator must
yield boolean; the result of the construct is the OR or AND of the
per-element results, respectively.

Original coding by Joe Conway, after an idea of Peter's.  Rewritten
by Tom to keep the implementation strictly separate from subqueries.

b3c0551eda Create real array comparison functions (that use the element datatype's
comparison functions), replacing the highly bogus bitwise array_eq.  Create
a btree index opclass for ANYARRAY --- it is now possible to create indexes
on array columns.
Arrange to cache the results of catalog lookups across multiple array
operations, instead of repeating the lookups on every call.
Add string_to_array and array_to_string functions.
Remove singleton_array, array_accum, array_assign, and array_subscript
functions, since these were for proof-of-concept and not intended to become
supported functions.
Minor adjustments to behavior in some corner cases with empty or
zero-dimensional arrays.

945543d919 Add ipv6 address parsing support to 'inet' and 'cidr' data types.
Regression tests for IPv6 operations added.

        Documentation updated to document IPv6 bits.

        Stop treating IPv4 as an "unsigned int" and IPv6 as an array of
        characters.  Instead, always use the array of characters so we
        can have one function fits all.  This makes bitncmp(), addressOK(),
        and several other functions "just work" on both address families.

        add family() function which returns integer 4 or 6 for IPv4 or
        IPv6.  (See examples below)  Note that to add this new function
        you will need to dump/initdb/reload or find the correct magic
        to add the function to the postgresql function catalogs.

        IPv4 addresses always sort before IPv6.

        On disk we use AF_INET for IPv4, and AF_INET+1 for IPv6 addresses.
        This prevents the need for a dump and reload, but lets IPv6 parsing
        work on machines without AF_INET6.

        To select all IPv4 addresses from a table:

                select * from foo where family(addr) = 4 ...

        Order by and other bits should all work.

bff0422b6c Revise hash join and hash aggregation code to use the same datatype-
specific hash functions used by hash indexes, rather than the old
not-datatype-aware ComputeHashFunc routine.  This makes it safe to do
hash joining on several datatypes that previously couldn't use hashing.
The sets of datatypes that are hash indexable and hash joinable are now
exactly the same, whereas before each had some that weren't in the other.

e649796f12 Implement outer-level aggregates to conform to the SQL spec, with
extensions to support our historical behavior.  An aggregate belongs
to the closest query level of any of the variables in its argument,
or the current query level if there are no variables (e.g., COUNT(*)).
The implementation involves adding an agglevelsup field to Aggref,
and treating outer aggregates like outer variables at planning time.

fc8d970cbc Replace functional-index facility with expressional indexes. Any column
of an index can now be a computed expression instead of a simple variable.
Restrictions on expressions are the same as for predicates (only immutable
functions, no sub-selects).  This fixes problems recently introduced with
inlining SQL functions, because the inlining transformation is applied to
both expression trees so the planner can still match them up.  Along the
way, improve efficiency of handling index predicates (both predicates and
index expressions are now cached by the relcache) and fix 7.3 oversight
that didn't record dependencies of predicate expressions.

f45df8c014 Cause CHAR(n) to TEXT or VARCHAR conversion to automatically strip trailing
blanks, in hopes of reducing the surprise factor for newbies.  Remove
redundant operators for VARCHAR (it depends wholly on TEXT operations now).
Clean up resolution of ambiguous operators/functions to avoid surprising
choices for domains: domains are treated as equivalent to their base types
and binary-coercibility is no longer considered a preference item when
choosing among multiple operators/functions.  IsBinaryCoercible now correctly
reflects the notion that you need *only* relabel the type to get from type
A to type B: that is, a domain is binary-coercible to its base type, but
not vice versa.  Various marginal cleanup, including merging the essentially
duplicate resolution code in parse_func.c and parse_oper.c.  Improve opr_sanity
regression test to understand about binary compatibility (using pg_cast),
and fix a couple of small errors in the catalogs revealed thereby.
Restructure "special operator" handling to fetch operators via index opclasses
rather than hardwiring assumptions about names (cleans up the pattern_ops
stuff a little).

d97c9b3662 Apply fixes for problems with dropped columns whose types have also been
dropped.  The simplest fix for INSERT/UPDATE cases turns out to be for
preptlist.c to insert NULLs of a known-good type (I used INT4) rather
than making them match the deleted column's type.  Since the representation
of NULL is actually datatype-independent, this should work fine.
I also re-reverted the patch to disable the use_physical_tlist optimization
in the presence of dropped columns.  It still doesn't look worth the
trouble to be smarter, if there are no other bugs to fix.
Added a regression test to catch future problems in this area.

54f7338fa1 This patch implements holdable cursors, following the proposal
(materialization into a tuple store) discussed on pgsql-hackers earlier.
I've updated the documentation and the regression tests.

Notes on the implementation:

- I needed to change the tuple store API slightly -- it assumes that it
won't be used to hold data across transaction boundaries, so the temp
files that it uses for on-disk storage are automatically reclaimed at
end-of-transaction. I added a flag to tuplestore_begin_heap() to control
this behavior. Is changing the tuple store API in this fashion OK?

- in order to store executor results in a tuple store, I added a new
CommandDest. This works well for the most part, with one exception: the
current DestFunction API doesn't provide enough information to allow the
Executor to store results into an arbitrary tuple store (where the
particular tuple store to use is chosen by the call site of
ExecutorRun). To workaround this, I've temporarily hacked up a solution
that works, but is not ideal: since the receiveTuple DestFunction is
passed the portal name, we can use that to lookup the Portal data
structure for the cursor and then use that to get at the tuple store the
Portal is using. This unnecessarily ties the Portal code with the
tupleReceiver code, but it works...

The proper fix for this is probably to change the DestFunction API --
Tom suggested passing the full QueryDesc to the receiveTuple function.
In that case, callers of ExecutorRun could "subclass" QueryDesc to add
any additional fields that their particular CommandDest needed to get
access to. This approach would work, but I'd like to think about it for
a little bit longer before deciding which route to go. In the mean time,
the code works fine, so I don't think a fix is urgent.

- (semi-related) I added a NO SCROLL keyword to DECLARE CURSOR, and
adjusted the behavior of SCROLL in accordance with the discussion on
-hackers.

- (unrelated) Cleaned up some SGML markup in sql.sgml, copy.sgml

d7f10705b4 Attached is a patch that limits the range tested by horology to
what is capable using integer-datatime timestamps. It does attempt
to exercise the maximum allowable timestamp range.
Also is a small error check when converting a timestamp from external
to internal format that prevents out of range timestamps from being
entered.

However, this statement which is the logical inverse of the above
gives incorrect results:

        SELECT timestamp without time zone '12/31/294276'
             - timestamp without time zone 'Jan 1, 4713 BC' AS "109203489 Days";

31e69ccb21 Add explicit tests for division by zero to all user-accessible integer
division and modulo functions, to avoid problems on OS X (which fails to
trap 0 divide at all) and Windows (which traps it in some bizarre
nonstandard fashion).  Standardize on 'division by zero' as the one true
spelling of this error message.  Add regression tests as suggested by
Neil Conway.

a286f73210 The following patches eliminate the overflows in the j2date() and date2j()
functions which limited the maximum date for a timestamp to AD 1465001.
The new limit is AD 5874897.

6cb1f4fe44 The "random" regression test uses a function called oidrand(), which
takes two parameters, an OID x and an integer y, and returns "true" with
probability 1/y (the OID argument is ignored). This can be useful -- for
example, it can be used to select a random sampling of the rows in a
table (which is what the "random" regression test uses it for).

This patch removes that function, because it was old and messy. The old
function had the following problems:

- it was undocumented

- it was poorly named

- it was designed to workaround an optimizer bug that no longer exists
(the OID argument is to ensure that the optimizer won't optimize away
calls to the function; AFAIK marking the function as 'volatile' suffices
nowadays)

- it used a different random-number generation technique than the other
PSRNG-related functions in the backend do (it called random() like they
do, but it had its own logic for setting a set and deciding when to
reseed the RNG).

Ok, this patch removes oidrand(), oidsrand(), and userfntest(), and
improves the SGML docs a little bit (un-commenting the setseed()
documentation).

de97072e3c Allow merge and hash joins to occur on arbitrary expressions (anything not
containing a volatile function), rather than only on 'Var = Var' clauses
as before.  This makes it practical to do flatten_join_alias_vars at the
start of planning, which in turn eliminates a bunch of klugery inside the
planner to deal with alias vars.  As a free side effect, we now detect
implied equality of non-Var expressions; for example in
	SELECT ... WHERE a.x = b.y and b.y = 42
we will deduce a.x = 42 and use that as a restriction qual on a.  Also,
we can remove the restriction introduced 12/5/02 to prevent pullup of
subqueries whose targetlists contain sublinks.
Still TODO: make statistical estimation routines in selfuncs.c and costsize.c
smarter about expressions that are more complex than plain Vars.  The need
for this is considerably greater now that we have to be able to estimate
the suitability of merge and hash join techniques on such expressions.

0a02d47a11 Enforces NOT NULL constraints to be applied against new PRIMARY KEY
columns in DefineIndex.  So, ALTER TABLE ... PRIMARY KEY will now
automatically add the NOT NULL constraint.  It appeared the alter_table
regression test wanted this to occur, as after the change the regression
test better matched in inline 'fails'/'succeeds' comments.

1b7f3cc02d This patch implements FOR EACH STATEMENT triggers, per my email to
-hackers a couple days ago.

Notes/caveats:

        - added regression tests for the new functionality, all
          regression tests pass on my machine

        - added pg_dump support

        - updated PL/PgSQL to support per-statement triggers; didn't
          look at the other procedural languages.

        - there's (even) more code duplication in trigger.c than there
          was previously. Any suggestions on how to refactor the
          ExecXXXTriggers() functions to reuse more code would be
          welcome -- I took a brief look at it, but couldn't see an
          easy way to do it (there are several subtly-different
          versions of the code in question)

        - updated the documentation. I also took the liberty of
          removing a big chunk of duplicated syntax documentation in
          the Programmer's Guide on triggers, and moving that
          information to the CREATE TRIGGER reference page.

        - I also included some spelling fixes and similar small
          cleanups I noticed while making the changes. If you'd like
          me to split those into a separate patch, let me know.

8bc717cb88 New version attached. The following is implemented:
- CLUSTER ALL clusters all the tables that have some index with
  indisclustered set and the calling user owns.
- CLUSTER tablename clusters the named table, using the index with
  indisclustered set.  If no index has the bit set, throws elog(ERROR).
- The multi-relation version (CLUSTER ALL) uses a multitransaction
  approach, similar to what VACUUM does.

f9b5b41ef9 Code review for ON COMMIT patch. Make the actual on-commit action happen
before commit, not after :-( --- the original coding is not only unsafe
if an error occurs while it's processing, but it generates an invalid
sequence of WAL entries.  Resurrect 7.2 logic for deleting items when
no longer needed.  Use an enum instead of random macros.  Editorialize
on names used for routines and constants.  Teach backend/nodes routines
about new field in CreateTable struct.  Add a regression test.

cfd2728100 This patch makes a minor cleanup to the implementation of PERFORM in
PL/PgSQL. Previously, it had been bundled together with the assign
statement implementation, for some reason that wasn't clear to me
(they certainly don't share any code with one another). So I separated
them and made PERFORM a statement like any other. No changes in
functionality.

Along the way, I added some regression tests for PERFORM, added a
bunch more SGML tags to the PL/PgSQL docs, and removed an obsolete
comment relating to the implementation of RETURN NEXT.

337f73b1bb Revise geometry regression testing to eliminate most cross-platform
variation.  To do this, set extra_float_digits to -3 in the geometry
test, and tweak the CIRCLE_TBL dataset to avoid values that suffer
from severe cancellation error (eg, circles that just touch an axis).
We still need two geometry 'expected' files to account for the
difference between platforms that display minus zero as '-0' and those
that just say '0', but with luck that's all we'll need.

c1f91a38e2 Fix rewrite code so that rules are in fact executed in order by name,
rather than being reordered according to INSTEAD attribute for
implementation convenience.
Also, increase compiled-in recursion depth limit from 10 to 100 rewrite
cycles.  10 seems pretty marginal for situations where multiple rules
exist for the same query.  There was a complaint about this recently,
so I'm going to bump it up.  (Perhaps we should make the limit a GUC
parameter, but that's too close to being a new feature to do in beta.)
