dict_thesaurus stored phrase IDs in uint16 fields, so it would get confused
and even crash if there were more than 64K entries in the configuration
file. It turns out to be basically free to widen the phrase IDs to uint32,
so let's just do so.
This was complained of some time ago by David Boutin (in bug #7793);
he later submitted an informal patch but it was never acted on.
We now have another complaint (bug #11901 from Luc Ouellette) so it's
time to make something happen.
This is basically Boutin's patch, but for future-proofing I also added a
defense against too many words per phrase. Note that we don't need any
explicit defense against overflow of the uint32 counters, since before that
happens we'd hit array allocation sizes that repalloc rejects.
Back-patch to all supported branches because of the crash risk.
Don't crash if an ispell dictionary definition contains flags but not
any compound affixes. (This isn't a security issue since only superusers
can install affix files, but still it's a bad thing.)
Also, be more careful about detecting whether an affix-file FLAG command
is old-format (ispell) or new-format (myspell/hunspell). And change the
error message about mixed old-format and new-format commands into something
intelligible.

Additional non-security issues/improvements spotted by Coverity.
In backend/libpq, no sense trying to protect against port->hba being
NULL after we've already dereferenced it in the switch() statement.
Prevent against possible overflow due to 32bit arithmitic in
basebackup throttling (not yet released, so no security concern).
Remove nonsensical check of array pointer against NULL in procarray.c,
looks to be a holdover from 9.1 and earlier when there were pointers
being used but now it's just an array.
Remove pointer check-against-NULL in tsearch/spell.c as we had already
dereferenced it above (in the strcmp()).
Remove dead code from adt/orderedsetaggs.c, isnull is checked
immediately after each tuplesort_getdatum() call and if true we return,
so no point checking it again down at the bottom.
Remove recently added minor error-condition memory leak in pg_regress.
A large majority of the callers of pg_do_encoding_conversion were
specifying the database encoding as either source or target of the
conversion, meaning that we can use the less general functions
pg_any_to_server/pg_server_to_any instead.
The main advantage of using the latter functions is that they can make use
of a cached conversion-function lookup in the common case that the other
encoding is the current client_encoding. It's notationally cleaner too in
most cases, not least because of the historical artifact that the latter
functions use "char *" rather than "unsigned char *" in their APIs.
Note that pg_any_to_server will apply an encoding verification step in
some cases where pg_do_encoding_conversion would have just done nothing.
This seems to me to be a good idea at most of these call sites, though
it partially negates the performance benefit.
Per discussion of bug #9210.
Coverity identified a number of places in which it couldn't prove that a
string being copied into a fixed-size buffer would fit. We believe that
most, perhaps all of these are in fact safe, or are copying data that is
coming from a trusted source so that any overrun is not really a security
issue. Nonetheless it seems prudent to forestall any risk by using
strlcpy() and similar functions.
Fixes by Peter Eisentraut and Jozef Mlich based on Coverity reports.
In addition, fix a potential null-pointer-dereference crash in
contrib/chkpass. The crypt(3) function is defined to return NULL on
failure, but chkpass.c didn't check for that before using the result.
The main practical case in which this could be an issue is if libc is
configured to refuse to execute unapproved hashing algorithms (e.g.,
"FIPS mode"). This ideally should've been a separate commit, but
since it touches code adjacent to one of the buffer overrun changes,
I included it in this commit to avoid last-minute merge issues.
This issue was reported by Honza Horak.
Security: CVE-2014-0065 for buffer overruns, CVE-2014-0066 for crypt()
In p_isdigit and other character class test functions generated by the
p_iswhat macro, the code path for non-C locales with multibyte encodings
contained a bogus pointer cast that would accidentally fail to malfunction
if types wchar_t and wint_t have the same width. Apparently that is true
on most platforms, but not on recent Cygwin releases. Remove the cast,
as it seems completely unnecessary (I think it arose from a false analogy
to the need to cast to unsigned char when dealing with the <ctype.h>
functions). Per bug #8970 from Marco Atzeri.
In the same functions, the code path for C locale with a multibyte encoding
simply ANDed each wide character with 0xFF before passing it to the
corresponding <ctype.h> function. This could result in false positive
answers for some non-ASCII characters, so use a range test instead.
Noted by me while investigating Marco's complaint.
Also, remove some useless though not actually buggy maskings and casts
in the hand-coded p_isalnum and p_isalpha functions, which evidently
got tested a bit more carefully than the macro-generated functions.
These changes should generally improve correctness/maintainability.
A nice side benefit is that several kilobytes move from initialized
data to text segment, allowing them to be shared across processes and
probably reducing copy-on-write overhead while forking a new backend.
Unfortunately this doesn't seem to help libpq in the same way (at least
not when it's compiled with -fpic on x86_64), but we can hope the linker
at least collects all nominally-const data together even if it's not
actually part of the text segment.
Also, make pg_encname_tbl[] static in encnames.c, since there seems
no very good reason for any other code to use it; per a suggestion
from Wim Lewis, who independently submitted a patch that was mostly
a subset of this one.

I made multiple errors in commit 97532f7c29,
stemming mostly from failure to think about the available frequency data
as being element frequencies not value frequencies (so that occurrences of
different elements are not mutually exclusive). This led to sillinesses
such as estimating that "word" would match more rows than "word:*".
The choice to clamp to a minimum estimate of DEFAULT_TS_MATCH_SEL also
seems pretty ill-considered in hindsight, as it would frequently result in
an estimate much larger than the available data suggests. We do need some
sort of clamp, since a pattern not matching any of the MCELEMs probably
still needs a selectivity estimate of more than zero. I chose instead to
clamp to at least what a non-MCELEM word would be estimated as, preserving
the property that "word:*" doesn't get an estimate less than plain "word",
whether or not the word appears in MCELEM.
Per investigation of a gripe from Bill Martin, though I suspect that his
example case actually isn't even reaching the erroneous code.
Back-patch to 9.1 where this code was introduced.
This reduces unnecessary exposure of other headers through htup.h, which
is very widely included by many files.
I have chosen to move the function prototypes to the new file as well,
because that means htup.h no longer needs to include tupdesc.h. In
itself this doesn't have much effect in indirect inclusion of tupdesc.h
throughout the tree, because it's also required by execnodes.h; but it's
something to explore in the future, and it seemed best to do the htup.h
change now while I'm busy with it.
Commit 3855968f32 added syntax, pg_dump,
psql support, and documentation, but the triggers didn't actually fire.
With this commit, they now do. This is still a pretty basic facility
overall because event triggers do not get a whole lot of information
about what the user is trying to do unless you write them in C; and
there's still no option to fire them anywhere except at the very
beginning of the execution sequence, but it's better than nothing,
and a good building block for future work.
Along the way, add a regression test for ALTER LARGE OBJECT, since
testing of event triggers reveals that we haven't got one.

The Solaris Studio compiler warns about these instances, unlike more
mainstream compilers such as gcc. But manual inspection showed that
the code is clearly not reachable, and we hope no worthy compiler will
complain about removing this code.
The latter was already the dominant use, and it's preferable because
in C the convention is that intXX means XX bits. Therefore, allowing
mixed use of int2, int4, int8, int16, int32 is obviously confusing.
Remove the typedefs for int2 and int4 for now. They don't seem to be
widely used outside of the PostgreSQL source tree, and the few uses
can probably be cleaned up by the time this ships.
This patch improves selectivity estimation for the array <@, &&, and @>
(containment and overlaps) operators. It enables collection of statistics
about individual array element values by ANALYZE, and introduces
operator-specific estimators that use these stats. In addition,
ScalarArrayOpExpr constructs of the forms "const = ANY/ALL (array_column)"
and "const <> ANY/ALL (array_column)" are estimated by treating them as
variants of the containment operators.
Since we still collect scalar-style stats about the array values as a
whole, the pg_stats view is expanded to show both these stats and the
array-style stats in separate columns. This creates an incompatible change
in how stats for tsvector columns are displayed in pg_stats: the stats
about lexemes are now displayed in the array-related columns instead of the
original scalar-related columns.
There are a few loose ends here, notably that it'd be nice to be able to
suppress either the scalar-style stats or the array-element stats for
columns for which they're not useful. But the patch is in good enough
shape to commit for wider testing.

This addresses only those cases that are easy to fix by adding or
moving a const qualifier or removing an unnecessary cast. There are
many more complicated cases remaining.
The previous coding would allow requests up to half of maxBlockSize to be
treated as "chunks", but when that actually did happen, we'd waste nearly
half of the space in the malloc block containing the chunk, if no smaller
requests came along to fill it. Avoid this scenario by limiting the
maximum size of a chunk to 1/8th maxBlockSize, so that we can waste no more
than 1/8th of the allocated space. This will not change the behavior at
all for the default context size parameters (with large maxBlockSize),
but it will change the behavior when using ALLOCSET_SMALL_MAXSIZE.
In particular, there's no longer a need for spell.c to be overly concerned
about the request size parameters it uses, so remove a rather unhelpful
comment about that.
Merlin Moncure, per an idea of Tom Lane's
These functions should take a pg_locale_t, not a collation OID, and should
call mbstowcs_l/wcstombs_l where available. Where those functions are not
available, temporarily select the correct locale with uselocale().
This change removes the bogus assumption that all locales selectable in
a given database have the same wide-character conversion method; in
particular, the collate.linux.utf8 regression test now passes with
LC_CTYPE=C, so long as the database encoding is UTF8.
I decided to move the char2wchar/wchar2char functions out of mbutils.c and
into pg_locale.c, because they work on wchar_t not pg_wchar_t and thus
don't really belong with the mbutils.c functions. Keeping them where they
were would have required importing pg_locale_t into pg_wchar.h somehow,
which did not seem like a good plan.
Since collation is effectively an argument, not a property of the function,
FmgrInfo is really the wrong place for it; and this becomes critical in
cases where a cached FmgrInfo is used for varying purposes that might need
different collation settings. Fix by passing it in FunctionCallInfoData
instead. In particular this allows a clean fix for bug #5970 (record_cmp
not working). This requires touching a bit more code than the original
method, but nobody ever thought that collations would not be an invasive
patch...
This involves getting the character classification and case-folding
functions in the regex library to use the collations infrastructure.
Most of this work had been done already in connection with the upper/lower
and LIKE logic, so it was a simple matter of transposition.
While at it, split out these functions into a separate source file
regc_pg_locale.c, so that they can be correctly labeled with the Postgres
project's license rather than the Scriptics license. These functions are
100% Postgres-written code whereas what remains in regc_locale.c is still
mostly not ours, so lumping them both under the same copyright notice was
getting more and more misleading.
ts_typanalyze.c computes MCE statistics as fractions of the non-null rows,
which seems fairly reasonable, and anyway changing it in released versions
wouldn't be a good idea. But then ts_selfuncs.c has to account for that.
Failure to do so results in overestimates in columns with a significant
fraction of null documents. Back-patch to 8.4 where this stuff was
introduced.

This patch eliminates per-chunk palloc overhead for most small allocations
needed in the representation of an ispell dictionary. This saves close to
a factor of 2 on the current Czech ispell data. While it doesn't cover
every last small allocation in the ispell code, we are at the point of
diminishing returns, because about 95% of the allocations are covered
already.

Add explicit initialization and cleanup functions to spell.c, and keep
all working state in the already-existing ISpellDict struct. This lets us
get rid of a static variable along with some extremely shaky assumptions
about usage of child memory contexts.
This commit is just code beautification and has no impact on functionality
or performance, but it opens the way to a less-grotty implementation of
Pavel's memory-saving hack, which will follow shortly.

exact match, which is what the code was doing before :-(. Noted while
experimenting with Artur Dobrowski's example.
possible (ie, whenever the tsquery is a constant), even when no statistics
are available for the tsvector. For example, foo @@ 'a & b'::tsquery
can be expected to be more selective than foo @@ 'a'::tsquery, whether
or not we know anything about foo. We use DEFAULT_TS_MATCH_SEL as the assumed
selectivity of individual query terms when no stats are available, then
combine the terms according to the query's AND/OR structure as usual.
Per experimentation with Artur Dabrowski's example. (The fact that there
are no stats available in that example is a problem in itself, but
nonetheless tsmatchsel should be smarter about the case.)
Back-patch to 8.4 to keep all versions of tsmatchsel() in sync.
We must filter out hashtable entries with frequencies less than those
specified by the algorithm, else we risk emitting junk entries whose
actual frequency is much less than other lexemes that did not get
tabulated. This is bad enough by itself, but even worse is that
tsquerysel() believes that the minimum frequency seen in pg_statistic is a
hard upper bound for lexemes not included, and was thus underestimating
the frequency of non-MCEs.
Also, set the threshold frequency to something with a little bit of theory
behind it, to wit assume that the input distribution is approximately
Zipfian. This might need adjustment in future, but some preliminary
experiments suggest that it's not too unreasonable.
Back-patch to 8.4, where this code was introduced.

My initial impression that glibc was measuring the precision in characters
(which is what the Linux man page says it does) was incorrect. It does take
the precision to be in bytes, but it also tries to truncate the string at a
character boundary. The bottom line remains the same: it will mess up
if the string is not in the encoding it expects, so we need to avoid %.*s
anytime there's a significant risk of that. Previous code changes are still
good, but adjust the comments to reflect this knowledge. Per research by
Hernan Gonzalez.
Depending on which spec you read, field widths and precisions in %s may be
counted either in bytes or characters. Our code was assuming bytes, which
is wrong at least for glibc's implementation, and in any case libc might
have a different idea of the prevailing encoding than we do. Hence, for
portable results we must avoid using anything more complex than just "%s"
unless the string to be printed is known to be all-ASCII.
This patch fixes the cases I could find, including the psql formatting
failure reported by Hernan Gonzalez. In HEAD only, I also added comments
to some places where it appears safe to continue using "%.*s".
to RFC 3986. In particular, these characters now terminate the path part
of a URL: '"', '<', '>', '\', '^', '`', '{', '|', '}'. The previous behavior
was inconsistent and depended on whether a "?" was present in the path.
Per gripe from Donald Fraser and spec research by Kevin Grittner.
This is a pre-existing bug, but not back-patching since the risks of
breaking existing applications seem to outweigh the benefits.
"column < constant", and the comparison value is in the first or last
histogram bin or outside the histogram entirely, try to fetch the actual
column min or max value using an index scan (if there is an index on the
column). If successful, replace the lower or upper histogram bound with
that value before carrying on with the estimate. This limits the
estimation error caused by moving min/max values when the comparison
value is close to the min or max. Per a complaint from Josh Berkus.
It is tempting to consider using this mechanism for mergejoinscansel as well,
but that would inject index fetches into main-line join estimation not just
endpoint cases. I'm refraining from that until we can get a better handle
on the costs of doing this type of lookup.
For long source strings the copying results in O(N^2) behavior, and the
multiplier can be significant if wide-char conversion is involved.

Update install-sh to that from Autoconf 2.63, plus our Darwin-specific
changes (which I simplified a bit). install-sh is now able to install
multiple files in one run, so we could simplify our makefiles sometime.
install-sh also now has a -d option to create directories, so we don't need
mkinstalldirs anymore.
Use AC_PROG_MKDIR_P in configure.in, so we can use mkdir -p when available
instead of install-sh -d. For consistency with the rest of the world,
the corresponding make variable has been renamed from $(mkinstalldirs) to
$(MKDIR_P).
This alters various incidental uses of C++ key words to use other similar
identifiers, so that a C++ compiler won't choke outright. You still
(probably) need extern "C" { }; around the inclusion of backend headers.

Some of the reader routines were already doing that in an ad-hoc way for
errors detected directly in the reader, but it didn't help for problems
detected in subroutines, such as encoding violations.
Back-patch to 8.3 because 8.3 is where people will be trying to debug
configuration files.

macros to htup.h, which allows removal of heapam.h inclusion from some .c
files.
For this to work, a new header file access/sysattr.h needed to be created,
initially containing attribute numbers of system columns, for pg_dump usage.
While at it, make contrib ltree, intarray and hstore header files more
consistent with our header style.
strings. This patch introduces four support functions cstring_to_text,
cstring_to_text_with_len, text_to_cstring, and text_to_cstring_buffer, and
two macros CStringGetTextDatum and TextDatumGetCString. A number of
existing macros that provided variants on these themes were removed.
Most of the places that need to make such conversions now require just one
function or macro call, in place of the multiple notational layers that used
to be needed. There are no longer any direct calls of textout or textin,
and we got most of the places that were using handmade conversions via
memcpy (there may be a few still lurking, though).
This commit doesn't make any serious effort to eliminate transient memory
leaks caused by detoasting toasted text objects before they reach
text_to_cstring. We changed PG_GETARG_TEXT_P to PG_GETARG_TEXT_PP in a few
places where it was easy, but much more could be done.

kind of operation except comparing tsqueries. So, in HEAD it's enough to

stored tsquery.

terminated. Reduce the ereports to elogs, since they are now not expected to
ever be hit (thus addressing Alvaro's original complaint).
In passing, const-ify the string argument to RS_compile.

categories, as per discussion. asciiword (formerly lword) is still
ASCII-letters-only, and numword (formerly word) is still the most general
mixed-alpha-and-digits case. But word (formerly nlword) is now
any-group-of-letters-with-at-least-one-non-ASCII, rather than all-non-ASCII as
before. This is no worse than before for parsing mixed Russian/English text,
which seems to have been the design center for the original coding; and it
should simplify matters for parsing most European languages. In particular
it will not be necessary for any language to accept strings containing digits
as being regular "words". The hyphenated-word categories are adjusted
similarly.
miscomputation of required palloc size. The crash could only occur if the
input contained lexemes both with and without positions, which is probably not
common in practice. The miscomputation would definitely result in wasted
space. Also fix some inconsistent coding around alignment of strings and
positions in a tsvector value; these errors could also lead to crashes given
mixed with/without position data and a machine that's picky about alignment.
And be more careful about checking for overflow of string offsets.
Patch is only against HEAD --- I have not looked to see if same bugs are
in back-branch contrib/tsearch2 code.
are really redundant, since we invented a regdictionary alias type.
We can have just one function, declared as taking regdictionary, and
it will handle both behaviors. Noted while working on documentation.
out at erratic times, because it is creating a totally unacceptable level
of noise in our buildfarm results. This patch can be reverted when and if
the code is fixed to not issue notices during cache reload events.
Rename synonym.syn.sample and thesaurs.ths.sample to
synonym_sample.syn and thesaurs_sample.ths accordingly to be able to use they
in regression test.
Ispell dictionary uses synthetic simple dictionary files.
Apparently it's a bug I introduced when I refactored spell.c to use the
readline function for reading and recoding the input file. I didn't
notice that some calls to STRNCMP used the non-lowercased version of the
input line.

- Brake the QueryItem struct into QueryOperator and QueryOperand.
Type was really the only common field between them. QueryItem still
exists, and is used in the TSQuery struct as before, but it's now a
union of the two. Many other changes fell from that, like separation
of pushval_asis function into pushValue, pushOperator and pushStop.
- Moved some structs that were for internal use only from header files
to the right .c-files.
- Moved tsvector parser to a new tsvector_parser.c file. Parser code was
about half of the size of tsvector.c, it's also used from tsquery.c, and
it has some data structures of its own, so it seems better to separate
it. Cleaned up the API so that TSVectorParserState is not accessed from
outside tsvector_parser.c.
- Separated enumerations (#defines, really) used for QueryItem.type
field and as return codes from gettoken_query. It was just accidental
code sharing.
- Removed ParseQueryNode struct used internally by makepol and friends.
push*-functions now construct QueryItems directly.
- Changed int4 variables to just ints for variables like "i" or "array
size", where the storage-size was not significant.
- ispell initialization crashed on empty dictionary file
- ispell initialization crashed on affix file with prefixes but no suffixes
- stop words file was run through pg_verify_mbstr, with database
encoding, but it's supposed to be UTF-8; similar bug for synonym files
- bunch of comments added, typos fixed, and other cleanup
Introduced consistent encoding checking/conversion of data read from tsearch
configuration files, by doing this in a single t_readline() subroutine
(replacing direct usages of fgets). Cleaned up API for readstopwords too.

init options of the template as top-level options in the syntax. This also
makes ALTER a bit easier to use, since options can be replaced individually.
I also made these statements verify that the tmplinit method will accept
the new settings before they get stored; in the original coding you didn't
find out about mistakes until the dictionary got invoked.
Under the hood, init methods now get options as a List of DefElem instead
of a raw text string --- that lets tsearch use existing options-pushing code
instead of duplicating functionality.
