Amit Kapila 366283961a Allow users to skip logical replication of data having origin.
This patch adds a new SUBSCRIPTION parameter "origin". It specifies
whether the subscription will request the publisher to only send changes
that don't have an origin or send changes regardless of origin. Setting it
to "none" means that the subscription will request the publisher to only
send changes that have no origin associated. Setting it to "any" means
that the publisher sends changes regardless of their origin. The default
is "any".
Usage:
CREATE SUBSCRIPTION sub1 CONNECTION 'dbname=postgres port=9999'
PUBLICATION pub1 WITH (origin = none);

This can be used to avoid loops (infinite replication of the same data)
among replication nodes.

This feature allows filtering only the replication data originating from
WAL but for initial sync (initial copy of table data) we don't have such a
facility as we can only distinguish the data based on origin from WAL. As
a follow-up patch, we are planning to forbid the initial sync if the
origin is specified as none and we notice that the publication tables were
also replicated from other publishers to avoid duplicate data or loops.

We forbid to allow creating origin with names 'none' and 'any' to avoid
confusion with the same name options.

Tom Lane f3d4019da5 Ensure consistent logical replication of datetime and float8 values.
In walreceiver, set the publisher's relevant GUCs (datestyle,
intervalstyle, extra_float_digits) to the same values that pg_dump uses,
and for the same reason: we need the output to be read the same way
regardless of the receiver's settings.  Without this, it's possible
for subscribers to misinterpret transmitted values.

Although this is clearly a bug fix, it's not without downsides:
subscribers that are storing values into some other datatype, such as
text, could get different results than before, and perhaps be unhappy
about that.  Given the lack of previous complaints, it seems best
to change this only in HEAD, and to call it out as an incompatible
change in v15.

Robert Haas 0266e98c6b Flexible options for CREATE_REPLICATION_SLOT.
Like BASE_BACKUP, CREATE_REPLICATION_SLOT has historically used a
hard-coded syntax.  To improve future extensibility, adopt a flexible
options syntax here, too.

In the new syntax, instead of three mutually exclusive options
EXPORT_SNAPSHOT, USE_SNAPSHOT, and NOEXPORT_SNAPSHOT, there is now a single
SNAPSHOT option with three possible values: 'export', 'use', and 'nothing'.

This commit does not remove support for the old syntax. It just adds
the new one as an additional option, makes pg_receivewal,
pg_recvlogical, and walreceiver processes use it.

Amit Kapila a8fd13cab0 Add support for prepared transactions to built-in logical replication.
To add support for streaming transactions at prepare time into the
built-in logical replication, we need to do the following things:

* Modify the output plugin (pgoutput) to implement the new two-phase API
callbacks, by leveraging the extended replication protocol.

* Modify the replication apply worker, to properly handle two-phase
transactions by replaying them on prepare.

* Add a new SUBSCRIPTION option "two_phase" to allow users to enable
two-phase transactions. We enable the two_phase once the initial data sync
is over.

We however must explicitly disable replication of two-phase transactions
during replication slot creation, even if the plugin supports it. We
don't need to replicate the changes accumulated during this phase,
and moreover, we don't have a replication connection open so we don't know
where to send the data anyway.

The streaming option is not allowed with this new two_phase option. This
can be done as a separate patch.

We don't allow to toggle two_phase option of a subscription because it can
lead to an inconsistent replica. For the same reason, we don't allow to
refresh the publication once the two_phase is enabled for a subscription
unless copy_data option is false.

Tom Lane 6b787d9e32 Improve SQLSTATE reporting in some replication-related code.
I started out with the goal of reporting ERRCODE_CONNECTION_FAILURE
when walrcv_connect() fails, but as I looked around I realized that
whoever wrote this code was of the opinion that errcodes are purely
optional.  That's not my understanding of our project policy.  Hence,
make sure that an errcode is provided in each ereport that (a) is
ERROR or higher level and (b) isn't arguably an internal logic error.
Also fix some very dubious existing errcode assignments.

While this is not per policy, it's also largely cosmetic, since few
of these cases could get reported to applications.  So I don't
feel a need to back-patch.

Tom Lane 9bacdf9f53 Don't leak malloc'd error string in libpqrcv_check_conninfo().
We leaked the error report from PQconninfoParse, when there was
one.  It seems unlikely that real usage patterns would repeat
the failure often enough to create serious bloat, but let's
back-patch anyway to keep the code similar in all branches.

Found via valgrind testing.
Back-patch to v10 where this code was added.

Implement pipeline mode in libpq
Pipeline mode in libpq lets an application avoid the Sync messages in
the FE/BE protocol that are implicit in the old libpq API after each
query.  The application can then insert Sync at its leisure with a new
libpq function PQpipelineSync.  This can lead to substantial reductions
in query latency.

Amit Kapila ce0fdbfe97 Allow multiple xacts during table sync in logical replication.
For the initial table data synchronization in logical replication, we use
a single transaction to copy the entire table and then synchronize the
position in the stream with the main apply worker.

There are multiple downsides of this approach: (a) We have to perform the
entire copy operation again if there is any error (network breakdown,
error in the database operation, etc.) while we synchronize the WAL
position between tablesync worker and apply worker; this will be onerous
especially for large copies, (b) Using a single transaction in the
synchronization-phase (where we can receive WAL from multiple
transactions) will have the risk of exceeding the CID limit, (c) The slot
will hold the WAL till the entire sync is complete because we never commit
till the end.

This patch solves all the above downsides by allowing multiple
transactions during the tablesync phase. The initial copy is done in a
single transaction and after that, we commit each transaction as we
receive. To allow recovery after any error or crash, we use a permanent
slot and origin to track the progress. The slot and origin will be removed
once we finish the synchronization of the table. We also remove slot and
origin of tablesync workers if the user performs DROP SUBSCRIPTION .. or
ALTER SUBSCRIPTION .. REFERESH and some of the table syncs are still not
finished.

The commands ALTER SUBSCRIPTION ... REFRESH PUBLICATION and
ALTER SUBSCRIPTION ... SET PUBLICATION ... with refresh option as true
cannot be executed inside a transaction block because they can now drop
the slots for which we have no provision to rollback.

This will also open up the path for logical replication of 2PC
transactions on the subscriber side. Previously, we can't do that because
of the requirement of maintaining a single transaction in tablesync
workers.

Bump catalog version due to change of state in the catalog
(pg_subscription_rel).

David Rowley 110d81728a Fixup some appendStringInfo and appendPQExpBuffer calls
A number of places were using appendStringInfo() when they could have been
using appendStringInfoString() instead.  While there's no functionality
change there, it's just more efficient to use appendStringInfoString()
when no formatting is required.  Likewise for some
appendStringInfoString() calls which were just appending a single char.
We can just use appendStringInfoChar() for that.

Additionally, many places were using appendPQExpBuffer() when they could
have used appendPQExpBufferStr(). Change those too.

Patch by Zhijie Hou, but further searching by me found significantly more
places that deserved the same treatment.

* Extend the logical replication protocol, so identify in-progress
transactions, and allow adding additional bits of information (e.g.
XID of subtransactions).

* Modify the output plugin (pgoutput) to implement the new stream
API callbacks, by leveraging the extended replication protocol.

* Modify the replication apply worker, to properly handle streamed
in-progress transaction by spilling the data to disk and then
replaying them on commit.

We however must explicitly disable streaming replication during
replication slot creation, even if the plugin supports it. We
don't need to replicate the changes accumulated during this phase,
and moreover we don't have a replication connection open so we
don't have where to send the data anyway.

Noah Misch 11da97024a Empty search_path in logical replication apply worker and walsender.
This is like CVE-2018-1058 commit
582edc369c.  Today, a malicious user of a
publisher or subscriber database can invoke arbitrary SQL functions
under an identity running replication, often a superuser.  This fix may
cause "does not exist" or "no schema has been selected to create in"
errors in a replication process.  After upgrading, consider watching
server logs for these errors.  Objects accruing schema qualification in
the wake of the earlier commit are unlikely to need further correction.
Back-patch to v10, which introduced logical replication.

Tom Lane 9de77b5453 Allow logical replication to transfer data in binary format.
This patch adds a "binary" option to CREATE/ALTER SUBSCRIPTION.
When that's set, the publisher will send data using the data type's
typsend function if any, rather than typoutput.  This is generally
faster, if slightly less robust.

As committed, we won't try to transfer user-defined array or composite
types in binary, for fear that type OIDs won't match at the subscriber.
This might be changed later, but it seems like fit material for a
follow-on patch.

Peter Eisentraut 3297308278 walreceiver uses a temporary replication slot by default
If no permanent replication slot is configured using
primary_slot_name, the walreceiver now creates and uses a temporary
replication slot.  A new setting wal_receiver_create_temp_slot can be
used to disable this behavior, for example, if the remote instance is
out of replication slots.

Tom Lane a1a789eb5a In walreceiver, don't try to do ereport() in a signal handler.
This is quite unsafe, even for the case of ereport(FATAL) where we won't
return control to the interrupted code, and despite this code's use of
a flag to restrict the areas where we'd try to do it.  It's possible
for example that we interrupt malloc or free while that's holding a lock
that's meant to protect against cross-thread interference.  Then, any
attempt to do malloc or free within ereport() will result in a deadlock,
preventing the walreceiver process from exiting in response to SIGTERM.
We hypothesize that this explains some hard-to-reproduce failures seen
in the buildfarm.

Hence, get rid of the immediate-exit code in WalRcvShutdownHandler,
as well as the logic associated with WalRcvImmediateInterruptOK.
Instead, we need to take care that potentially-blocking operations
in the walreceiver's data transmission logic (libpqwalreceiver.c)
will respond reasonably promptly to the process's latch becoming
set and then call ProcessWalRcvInterrupts.  Much of the needed code
for that was already present in libpqwalreceiver.c.  I refactored
things a bit so that all the uses of PQgetResult use latch-aware
waiting, but didn't need to do much more.

These changes should be enough to ensure that libpqwalreceiver.c
will respond promptly to SIGTERM whenever it's waiting to receive
data.  In principle, it could block for a long time while waiting
to send data too, and this patch does nothing to guard against that.
I think that that hazard is mostly theoretical though: such blocking
should occur only if we fill the kernel's data transmission buffers,
and we don't generally send enough data to make that happen without
waiting for input.  If we find out that the hazard isn't just
theoretical, we could fix it by using PQsetnonblocking, but that
would require more ticklish changes than I care to make now.

This is a bug fix, but it seems like too big a change to push into
the back branches without much more testing than there's time for
right now.  Perhaps we'll back-patch once we have more confidence
in the change.

Peter Eisentraut 69039fda83 Add walreceiver API to get remote server version
Add a separate walreceiver API function walrcv_server_version() to get
the version of the remote server, instead of doing it as part of
walrcv_identify_system().  This allows the server version to be
available even for uses that don't call IDENTIFY_SYSTEM, and it seems
cleaner anyway.

This is for an upcoming patch, not currently used.

Thomas Munro cfdf4dc4fc Add WL_EXIT_ON_PM_DEATH pseudo-event.
Users of the WaitEventSet and WaitLatch() APIs can now choose between
asking for WL_POSTMASTER_DEATH and then handling it explicitly, or asking
for WL_EXIT_ON_PM_DEATH to trigger immediate exit on postmaster death.
This reduces code duplication, since almost all callers want the latter.

Repair all code that was previously ignoring postmaster death completely,
or requesting the event but ignoring it, or requesting the event but then
doing an unconditional PostmasterIsAlive() call every time through its
event loop (which is an expensive syscall on platforms for which we don't
have USE_POSTMASTER_DEATH_SIGNAL support).

Assert that callers of WaitLatchXXX() under the postmaster remember to
ask for either WL_POSTMASTER_DEATH or WL_EXIT_ON_PM_DEATH, to prevent
future bugs.

The only process that doesn't handle postmaster death is syslogger.  It
waits until all backends holding the write end of the syslog pipe
(including the postmaster) have closed it by exiting, to be sure to
capture any parting messages.  By using the WaitEventSet API directly
it avoids the new assertion, and as a by-product it may be slightly
more efficient on platforms that have epoll().

Andres Freund 578b229718 Remove WITH OIDS support, change oid catalog column visibility.
Previously tables declared WITH OIDS, including a significant fraction
of the catalog tables, stored the oid column not as a normal column,
but as part of the tuple header.

This special column was not shown by default, which was somewhat odd,
as it's often (consider e.g. pg_class.oid) one of the more important
parts of a row.  Neither pg_dump nor COPY included the contents of the
oid column by default.

The fact that the oid column was not an ordinary column necessitated a
significant amount of special case code to support oid columns. That
already was painful for the existing, but upcoming work aiming to make
table storage pluggable, would have required expanding and duplicating
that "specialness" significantly.

WITH OIDS has been deprecated since 2005 (commit ff02d0a05280e0).
Remove it.

Removing includes:
- CREATE TABLE and ALTER TABLE syntax for declaring the table to be
  WITH OIDS has been removed (WITH (oids[ = true]) will error out)
- pg_dump does not support dumping tables declared WITH OIDS and will
  issue a warning when dumping one (and ignore the oid column).
- restoring an pg_dump archive with pg_restore will warn when
  restoring a table with oid contents (and ignore the oid column)
- COPY will refuse to load binary dump that includes oids.
- pg_upgrade will error out when encountering tables declared WITH
  OIDS, they have to be altered to remove the oid column first.
- Functionality to access the oid of the last inserted row (like
  plpgsql's RESULT_OID, spi's SPI_lastoid, ...) has been removed.

The syntax for declaring a table WITHOUT OIDS (or WITH (oids = false)
for CREATE TABLE) is still supported. While that requires a bit of
support code, it seems unnecessary to break applications / dumps that
do not use oids, and are explicit about not using them.

The biggest user of WITH OID columns was postgres' catalog. This
commit changes all 'magic' oid columns to be columns that are normally
declared and stored. To reduce unnecessary query breakage all the
newly added columns are still named 'oid', even if a table's column
naming scheme would indicate 'reloid' or such.  This obviously
requires adapting a lot code, mostly replacing oid access via
HeapTupleGetOid() with access to the underlying Form_pg_*->oid column.

The bootstrap process now assigns oids for all oid columns in
genbki.pl that do not have an explicit value (starting at the largest
oid previously used), only oids assigned later by oids will be above
FirstBootstrapObjectId. As the oid column now is a normal column the
special bootstrap syntax for oids has been removed.

Oids are not automatically assigned during insertion anymore, all
backend code explicitly assigns oids with GetNewOidWithIndex(). For
the rare case that insertions into the catalog via SQL are called for
the new pg_nextoid() function can be used (which only works on catalog
tables).

The fact that oid columns on system tables are now normal columns
means that they will be included in the set of columns expanded
by * (i.e. SELECT * FROM pg_class will now include the table's oid,
previously it did not). It'd not technically be hard to hide oid
column by default, but that'd mean confusing behavior would either
have to be carried forward forever, or it'd cause breakage down the
line.

While it's not unlikely that further adjustments are needed, the
scope/invasiveness of the patch makes it worthwhile to get merge this
now. It's painful to maintain externally, too complicated to commit
after the code code freeze, and a dependency of a number of other
patches.

Catversion bump, for obvious reasons.

Andres Freund 86eaf208ea Hand code string to integer conversion for performance.
As benchmarks show, using libc's string-to-integer conversion is
pretty slow. At least part of the reason for that is that strtol[l]
have to be more generic than what largely is required inside pg.

This patch considerably speeds up int2/int4 input (int8 already was
already using hand-rolled code).

Most of the existing pg_atoi callers have been converted. But as one
requires pg_atoi's custom delimiter functionality, and as it seems
likely that there's external pg_atoi users, it seems sensible to just
keep pg_atoi around.

Fujii Masao 9a895462d9 Enhance pg_stat_wal_receiver view to display host and port of sender server.
Previously there was no way in the standby side to find out the host and port
of the sender server that the walreceiver was currently connected to when
multiple hosts and ports were specified in primary_conninfo. For that purpose,
this patch adds sender_host and sender_port columns into pg_stat_wal_receiver
view. They report the host and port that the active replication connection
currently uses.

Bump catalog version.

Tom Lane f3a4d7e7c2 Distinguish wait-for-connection from wait-for-write-ready on Windows.
The API for WaitLatch and friends followed the Unix convention in which
waiting for a socket connection to complete is identical to waiting for
the socket to accept a write.  While Windows provides a select(2)
emulation that agrees with that, the native WaitForMultipleObjects API
treats them as quite different --- and for some bizarre reason, it will
report a not-yet-connected socket as write-ready.  libpq itself has so
far escaped dealing with this because it waits with select(), but in
libpqwalreceiver.c we want to wait using WaitLatchOrSocket.  The semantics
mismatch resulted in replication connection failures on Windows, but only
for remote connections (apparently, localhost connections complete
immediately, or at least too fast for anyone to have noticed the problem
in single-machine testing).

To fix, introduce an additional WL_SOCKET_CONNECTED wait flag for
WaitLatchOrSocket, which is identical to WL_SOCKET_WRITEABLE on
non-Windows, but results in waiting for FD_CONNECT events on Windows.

Ideally, we would also distinguish the two conditions in the API for
PQconnectPoll(), but changing that API at this point seems infeasible.
Instead, cheat by checking for PQstatus() == CONNECTION_STARTED to
determine that we're still waiting for the connection to complete.
(This is a cheat mainly because CONNECTION_STARTED is documented as an
internal state rather than something callers should rely on.  Perhaps
we ought to change the documentation ... but this patch doesn't.)

Per reports from Jobin Augustine and Igor Neyman.  Back-patch to v10
where commit 1e8a85009 exposed this longstanding shortcoming.

Alvaro Herrera 030273b7ea Fix inadequacies in recently added wait events
In commit 9915de6c1c, we introduced a new wait point for replication
slots and incorrectly labelled it as wait event PG_WAIT_LOCK.  That's
wrong, so invent an appropriate new wait event instead, and document it
properly.

While at it, fix numerous other problems in the vicinity:
- two different walreceiver wait events were being mixed up in a single
  wait event (which wasn't documented either); split it out so that they
  can be distinguished, and document the new events properly.

- ParallelBitmapPopulate was documented but didn't exist.

- ParallelBitmapScan was not documented (I think this should be called
  "ParallelBitmapScanInit" instead.)

- Logical replication wait events weren't documented

- various symbols had been added in dartboard order in various places.
  Put them in alphabetical order instead, as was originally intended.

Tom Lane 382ceffdf7 Phase 3 of pgindent updates.
Don't move parenthesized lines to the left, even if that means they
flow past the right margin.

By default, BSD indent lines up statement continuation lines that are
within parentheses so that they start just to the right of the preceding
left parenthesis.  However, traditionally, if that resulted in the
continuation line extending to the right of the desired right margin,
then indent would push it left just far enough to not overrun the margin,
if it could do so without making the continuation line start to the left of
the current statement indent.  That makes for a weird mix of indentations
unless one has been completely rigid about never violating the 80-column
limit.

This behavior has been pretty universally panned by Postgres developers.
Hence, disable it with indent's new -lpl switch, so that parenthesized
lines are always lined up with the preceding left paren.

This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent
changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects.

Tom Lane a3bed62d44 Fix low-probability leaks of PGresult objects in the backend.
We had three occurrences of essentially the same coding pattern
wherein we tried to retrieve a query result from a libpq connection
without blocking.  In the case where PQconsumeInput failed (typically
indicating a lost connection), all three loops simply gave up and
returned, forgetting to clear any previously-collected PGresult
object.  Since those are malloc'd not palloc'd, the oversight results
in a process-lifespan memory leak.

One instance, in libpqwalreceiver, is of little significance because
the walreceiver process would just quit anyway if its connection fails.
But we might as well fix it.

The other two instances, in postgres_fdw, are somewhat more worrisome
because at least in principle the scenario could be repeated, allowing
the amount of memory leaked to build up to something worth worrying
about.  Moreover, in these cases the loops contain CHECK_FOR_INTERRUPTS
calls, as well as other calls that could potentially elog(ERROR),
providing another way to exit without having cleared the PGresult.
Here we need to add PG_TRY logic similar to what exists in quite a
few other places in postgres_fdw.

Coverity noted the libpqwalreceiver bug; I found the other two cases
by checking all calls of PQconsumeInput.

Back-patch to all supported versions as appropriate (9.2 lacks
postgres_fdw, so this is really quite unexciting for that branch).

Andres Freund 5fd56b9f5b Again report a useful error message when walreceiver's connection closes.
Since 7c4f52409a (merged in v10), a shutdown master is reported as
  FATAL:  unexpected result after CommandComplete: server closed the connection unexpectedly
by walsender. It used to be
  LOG:  replication terminated by primary server
  FATAL:  could not send end-of-streaming message to primary: no COPY in progress
while the old message clearly is not perfect, it's definitely better
than what's reported now.

The change comes from the attempt to handle finished COPYs without
erroring out, needed for the new logical replication, which wasn't
needed before.

There's probably better ways to handle this, but for now just
explicitly check for a closed connection.

Andres Freund 9206ced1dc Clean up latch related code.
The larger part of this patch replaces usages of MyProc->procLatch
with MyLatch.  The latter works even early during backend startup,
where MyProc->procLatch doesn't yet.  While the affected code
shouldn't run in cases where it's not initialized, it might get copied
into places where it might.  Using MyLatch is simpler and a bit faster
to boot, so there's little point to stick with the previous coding.

While doing so I noticed some weaknesses around newly introduced uses
of latches that could lead to missed events, and an omitted
CHECK_FOR_INTERRUPTS() call in worker_spi.

As all the actual bugs are in v10 code, there doesn't seem to be
sufficient reason to backpatch this.

Peter Eisentraut 7c4f52409a Logical replication support for initial data copy
Add functionality for a new subscription to copy the initial data in the
tables and then sync with the ongoing apply process.

For the copying, add a new internal COPY option to have the COPY source
data provided by a callback function.  The initial data copy works on
the subscriber by receiving COPY data from the publisher and then
providing it locally into a COPY that writes to the destination table.

A WAL receiver can now execute full SQL commands.  This is used here to
obtain information about tables and publications.

Several new options were added to CREATE and ALTER SUBSCRIPTION to
control whether and when initial table syncing happens.

Change pg_dump option --no-create-subscription-slots to
--no-subscription-connect and use the new CREATE SUBSCRIPTION
... NOCONNECT option for that.

Tom Lane b5dd50f2c0 Rewrite async-connection loop in libpqwalreceiver.c, once again.
The original coding in commit 1e8a85009 didn't use PQconnectPoll per
spec, and while the rewrite in e434ad39a is closer, it still doesn't
guarantee to wait until the socket is read-ready or write-ready (as
appropriate) before calling PQconnectPoll.  It's not clear whether
that omission is causing the continuing failures on buildfarm member
bowerbird; but given the lack of other explanations meeting the
available facts, let's tighten that up and see what happens.

An independent issue in the same loop was that it had a race condition
whereby it could clear the process's latch without having serviced an
interrupt request, causing failure to respond to a cancel while waiting
for connection (the very problem 1e8a85009 was meant to fix).

Peter Eisentraut eb4da3e380 Add option to control snapshot export to CREATE_REPLICATION_SLOT
We used to export snapshots unconditionally in CREATE_REPLICATION_SLOT
in the replication protocol, but several upcoming patches want more
control over what happens.

Suppress snapshot export in pg_recvlogical, which neither needs nor can
use the exported snapshot.  Since snapshot exporting can fail this
improves reliability.

This also paves the way for allowing the creation of replication slots
on standbys, which cannot export snapshots because they cannot allocate
new XIDs.

Peter Eisentraut 1e8a850094 Use asynchronous connect API in libpqwalreceiver
This makes the connection attempt from CREATE SUBSCRIPTION and from
WalReceiver interruptable by the user in case the libpq connection is
hanging.  The previous coding required immediate shutdown (SIGQUIT) of
PostgreSQL in that situation.

Peter Eisentraut 2ed193c904 chomp PQerrorMessage() in backend uses
PQerrorMessage() returns an error message with a trailing newline, but
in backend use (dblink, postgres_fdw, libpqwalreceiver), we want to have
the error message without that for emitting via ereport().  To simplify
that, add a function pchomp() that returns a pstrdup'ed string with the
trailing newline characters removed.
