d2d0f42040 Use heap_formtuple not heap_addheader to construct pg_index tuples.
heap_addheader is wrong because it doesn't cope with varlena fields,
notably indpred.

cb253de21a Don't mess with HEAP_XMAX_INVALID in heaptuple.c routines; there is
no reason to worry about the tuple commit status bits until the tuple
is inserted in a relation by heapam.c. Also, improve comments for
heap_addheader().

b2ab1e6bc9 Ensure that before truncating CLOG, we force a checkpoint even if no
recent WAL activity has occurred. Without this, it's possible that a
later crash might leave tuples on disk with un-updated commit status
bits.

c87469e64a Fix problems with loss of tuple commit status bits during WAL redo of
VACUUM FULL tuple moves. Store full-width t_infomask in WAL, rather
than storing low 8 bits and expecting to be able to reconstruct upper
bits. While at it, remove redundant t_oid field from WAL headers
(the OID, if present, is now recorded in the data portion of the tuple).
WAL version number bumped --- this does not force an initdb, you can
instead run pg_resetxlog after a clean shutdown of the old postmaster.

b2c34e2bd1 I have attached the pltcl patch again, just in case. For the sake of clarity
let's say this patch superscedes the previous one.

I have also attached a patch addressing the similar memory leak problem in
plpython. This includes a slight adjustment of the tests in the source
directory. The patch also includes a cosmetic change to remove a compiler
warning although I think the change makes the code look worse though.

BTW, by my reckoning the memory leak would occur with prepared plans and
without. If that is not the case then I've been barking up the wrong tree.

8a6fab412e Remove ShutdownBufferPoolAccess exit callback, and do the work in
ProcKill instead, where we still have a PGPROC with which to wait on
LWLocks. This fixes 'can't wait without a PROC structure' failures
occasionally seen during backend shutdown (I'm surprised they weren't
more frequent, actually). Add an Assert() to LWLockAcquire to help
catch any similar mistakes in future. Fix failure to update MyProcPid
for standalone backends and pgstat processes.

233ecca7c9 Further thinking about heap_mark4update: in HeapTupleSelfUpdated case,
executor should not return the tuple as successfully marked, because in
fact it's been deleted. Not clear that this case has ever been seen
in practice (I think you'd have to write a SELECT FOR UPDATE that calls
a function that deletes some row the SELECT will visit later...) but we
should be consistent. Also add comments to several other places that
got it right but didn't explain what they were doing.

f9a1ea6fa7 Obviously noone has ever tested the doubling of availiable result ids
up to
reaching the hard limit. After opening 16(=current REST_START value)
results via pg_exec, the next pg_exec tries to find an empty slot
forever :-( . In PgSetResultId file pgtclId.c in the for loop there
has to be done a break, if res_max ist reached. The piece of code
should look like
        if (resid == connid->res_max)
        {
            resid = 0;
break; /* the break as to be added */
        }

now everything works (double available results after reaching
RES_START up to reaching RES_HARD_MAX)

df3e7b3a51 In UpdateStats(), don't bother to update the pg_class row if it already
contains the correct statistics. This is a partial solution for the
problem of allowing concurrent CREATE INDEX commands: unless they commit
at nearly the same instant, the second one will see the first one's
pg_class updates as committed, and won't try to update again, thus
avoiding the 'tuple concurrently updated' failure.

ac355d558e Move most of the error checking for foreign-key constraints out of
parse analysis and into the execution code (in tablecmds.c). This
eliminates a lot of unreasonably complex code that needed to have two
or more execution paths in case it was dealing with a not-yet-created
table column vs. an already-existing one. The execution code is always
dealing with already-created tables and so needs only one case. This
also eliminates some potential race conditions (the table wasn't locked
between parse analysis and execution), makes it easy to fix the gripe
about wrong referenced-column names generating a misleading error message,
and lets us easily add a dependency from the foreign-key constraint to
the unique index that it requires the referenced table to have. (Cf.
complaint from Kris Jurka 12-Sep-2002 on pgsql-bugs.)

Also, third try at building a deletion mechanism that is not sensitive
to the order in which pg_depend entries are visited. Adding the above-
mentioned dependency exposed the folly of what dependency.c had been
doing: it failed for cases where B depends on C while both auto-depend
on A. Dropping A should succeed in this case, but was failing if C
happened to be visited before B. It appears the only solution is two
separate walks over the dependency tree.

Ok, fair enough. It's worth noting that they've been broken for a
while -- for example, the HashJoin counter increments were broken when
you comitted r1.20 of executor/nodeHashJoin.c in May of '99.

I've attached a revised patch that doesn't remove the counters (but
doesn't increment them either: I'm not sure of all the places where
the counter should be incremented).

4a0c3a6142 Department of second thoughts: suppressing implicit casts everywhere in
ruleutils display is not such a great idea. For arguments of functions
and operators I think we'd better keep the historical behavior of showing
such casts explicitly, to ensure that the function/operator is reparsed
the same way when the rule is reloaded. This also makes the output of
EXPLAIN less obscurantist about exactly what's happening.

b26dfb9522 Extend pg_cast castimplicit column to a three-way value; this allows us
to be flexible about assignment casts without introducing ambiguity in
operator/function resolution. Introduce a well-defined promotion hierarchy
for numeric datatypes (int2->int4->int8->numeric->float4->float8).
Change make_const to initially label numeric literals as int4, int8, or
numeric (never float8 anymore).
Explicitly mark Func and RelabelType nodes to indicate whether they came
from a function call, explicit cast, or implicit cast; use this to do
reverse-listing more accurately and without so many heuristics.
Explicit casts to char, varchar, bit, varbit will truncate or pad without
raising an error (the pre-7.2 behavior), while assigning to a column without
any explicit cast will still raise an error for wrong-length data like 7.3.
This more nearly follows the SQL spec than 7.2 behavior (we should be
reporting a 'completion condition' in the explicit-cast cases, but we have
no mechanism for that, so just do silent truncation).
Fix some problems with enforcement of typmod for array elements;
it didn't work at all in 'UPDATE ... SET array[n] = foo', for example.
Provide a generalized array_length_coerce() function to replace the
specialized per-array-type functions that used to be needed (and were
missing for NUMERIC as well as all the datetime types).
Add missing conversions int8<->float4, text<->numeric, oid<->int8.

53e95eee84 Fix for rare race-condition-like failure: if a backend receives SIGUSR2
(notify/SI-overrun interrupt) while it is in process of doing proc_exit,
it is possible for Async_NotifyHandler() to try to start a transaction
when one is already running. This leads to Asserts() or worse. I think
it may only be possible to occur when frontend synchronization is lost
(ie, the elog(FATAL) in SocketBackend() fires), but that is a standard
occurrence after error during COPY. In any case, I have seen this
failure occur during regression tests, so it is definitely possible.

the macro has a function-like appearance to match the other PG_*

Attached is a diff -c format proposal to fix this. I've also attached a short

Here's a breakdown of how I understand plpgsql's "Special word rules" -- I
think it illustrates the behavior reasonably well. New functions added by this

No one commented on the choice of name, so the attached patch changes
the name of split(text, text, int) to split_part(text,text,int) per
Hannu's recommendation above. This can be applied without an initdb if
current beta testers are advised to run:

   update pg_proc set proname = 'split_part' where proname = 'split';

in the case they want to use this function. Regression and doc fix is
also included in the patch.

Ok, the following patch should solve this concern. It also tries to
connect as little times as possible (the previous one would connect one
time per table plus one per database; this one connects two times per
database).

6fdc44be71 Tweak querytree-dependency-extraction code so that columns of tables
that are explicitly JOINed are not considered dependencies unless they
are actually used in the query: mere presence in the joinaliasvars
list of a JOIN RTE doesn't count as being used. The patch touches
a number of files because I needed to generalize the API of
query_tree_walker to support an additional flag bit, but the changes
are otherwise quite small.

d634a5903f Patches submitted by Kris Jurka (jurka@ejurka.com) for the following bugs:
- Properly drop tables in jdbc regression tests with cascade for 7.3
  - problem with Statement.execute() and executeUpdate() not clearing binds
  - problem with ResultSet not correctly handling default encoding
  - changes to correctly support show transaction isolation level in 7.3
  - changed DatabaseMetaDataTest to handle differences in FK names in 7.3
  - better fix for dynamically checking server NAME data length
(With the fixes above the jdbc regression tests pass on jdbc2 and jdbc3

50938576d4 I tried to build PostgreSQL with the following step to see backends hung
during the regression test. The problem has been reproduced on two machine
but both of these are the same type of hardware and software. I also tried
to recreate the problem on other machines, on older version of AIX but I
couldn't.

After looked through pgsql-hackers mailing list, I focused on spin lock
issue to solve the problem. The easiest and may not be the best solution
for the problem is to give up HAS_TEST_AND_SET. This actually works.

One another and better solution for the problem is to use _check_lock() and
_clear_lock() as spin lock. Important thing here is to define S_UNLOCK()
with _clear_lock(). This will solve the so called "Compiler bug" issue
someone wrote on the mailing list.

We have some other API such as cs(), compare_and_swap() and fetch_and_or()
to do test and set on AIX, but any of these didn't solve my problem. I
wrote tiny testing program to see if we have any bug of these API of AIX,
but I couldn't see any problem except for compare_and_swap(). It seems that
you can not use compare_and_swap() for the purpose, as it would not work as
spin lock on any SMP machines I tested. I don't know the reason why cs()
nor fetch_and_or()/fetch_and_and() will not work with PostgreSQL on p690.
These worked with my testing program on all machines I tested.

26993b2918 AUTOCOMMIT mode is now an available backend GUC variable; setting it
to false provides more SQL-spec-compliant behavior than we had before.
I am not sure that setting it false is actually a good idea yet; there
is a lot of client-side code that will probably be broken by turning
autocommit off. But it's a start.

626eca697c This patch reserves the last superuser_reserved_connections slots for
connections by the superuser only.

This patch replaces the last patch I sent a couple of days ago.

It closes a connection that has not been authorised by a superuser if it would
leave less than the GUC variable ReservedBackends
(superuser_reserved_connections in postgres.conf) backend process slots free
in the SISeg. This differs to the first patch which only reserved the last
ReservedBackends slots in the procState array. This has made the free slot
test more expensive due to the use of a lock.

After thinking about a comment on the first patch I've also made it a fatal
error if the number of reserved slots is not less than the maximum number of
connections.

c0ad595386 I attach a little patch to make CLUSTER set and reset the indisclustered

I also attach clusterdb and clusterdb.sgml; both of them are blatant
rips of vacuumdb and vacuumdb.sgml, but get the job done. Please review
them, as I'm probably making a lot of mistakes with SGML and I can't
compile it here.

vacuumdb itself is not very comfortable to use when the databases have
passwords, because it has to connect once for each table (I can probably
make it connect only once for each database; should I?). Because of
this I added a mention of PGPASSWORDFILE in the documentation, but I
don't know if that is the correct place for that.

58de480999 Clean up comments to be careful about the distinction between variable-
width types and varlena types, since with the introduction of CSTRING as
a more-or-less-real type, these concepts aren't identical. I've tried to
use varlena consistently to denote datatypes with typlen = -1, ie, they
have a length word and are potentially TOASTable; while the term variable
width covers both varlena and cstring (and, perhaps, someday other types
with other rules for computing the actual width). No code changes in this
commit except for renaming a couple macros.

976246cc7e The cstring datatype can now be copied, passed around, etc. The typlen
value '-2' is used to indicate a variable-width type whose width is
computed as strlen(datum)+1. Everything that looks at typlen is updated
except for array support, which Joe Conway is working on; at the moment
it wouldn't work to try to create an array of cstring.

fe2dec75a9 Enhancements to how queries with bind values are stored internally and sent to
the server. Previously we allocated a new String object for the entire final
query we were sending to the database. If you had a big query, or especially
if you had large bind values you ended up with essentially two copies in memory.
This change will reuse the existing objects and therefore should take 1/2 the
memory it does today for a given query. This restructuring will also allow
in the future the ability to stream bytea data to the server instead of the current approach of pulling it all into memory.
I also fixed a test that was failing on a 7.2 database.
Also renamed some internal variables and some minor cleanup.

ebe1be1321 This patch improves the behavior of FOUND in PL/PgSQL. In Oracle,
FOUND is set whenever a SELECT INTO returns > 0 rows, *or* when an
INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE affects > 0 rows. We implemented the first
part of this behavior, but not the second.

I also improved the documentation on the various situations in which
FOUND can be set (excluding inside FOR loops, which I still need to
think about), and added some regression tests for this behavior.

This patch is an updated version of the lock listing patch. I've made
the following changes:

    - write documentation
    - wrap the SRF in a view called 'pg_locks': all user-level
access should be done through this view
    - re-diff against latest CVS

One thing I chose not to do is adapt the SRF to use the anonymous
composite type code from Joe Conway. I'll probably do that eventually,
but I'm not really convinced it's a significantly cleaner way to
bootstrap SRF builtins than the method this patch uses (of course, it
has other uses...)

b7214a877c What I have done for libpgtcl:
Everytime if I do PQconsumeInput (when the backend channel gets
readable) I check for the return value. (0 == error) and generate a
notification manually, e.g. fixed string connection_closed) and pass it to the
TCL event queue. The only other thing I had to do is to comment out removing
all pending events in PgStopNotifyEventSource whenever the connection was
unexpectedly closed (so the manually generated event will not be deleted).

A broken backend connection triggers a notify event to the client (fixed
notification string "connection_closed") so proper action can be taken to switch
to another database server etc. Remember that this is event driven. If you have
applications, that have idle database connections most of the time, you'll get
immediate feedback of a dying server. Upon connection to the server issue a
pg_notify for notify event "connection_closed" and whenever the backend crashes
(which it does do in very very rare cases) you get an event driven recovery. (of
course the Tcl-Event loop has to be processed). Issuing a notification
"connection_closed" on a still working database could be used for switching to
another db-server (which I've actually impelemented right now).

4f1ac055f1 Well, that certainly appeared to be very straight forward. pg.py and
syscat.py scripts were both modified. pg.py uses it to cache a list of
pks (which is seemingly does for every db connection) and various
attributes. syscat uses it to walk the list of system tables and
queries the various attributes from these tables.

In both cases, it seemingly makes sense to apply what you've requested.

Apologies if this has already been plugged. I looked in the archives

At any rate, I must admit I don't think I fully understand the
implications of some of the changes I made even though they appear to be
straight forward. We all know the devil is in the details. Anyone more
knowledgeable is requested to review my changes. :(

I also updated the advanced.py script in a somewhat nonsensical fashion
to make use of an int8 field in an effort to test this change. It seems
to run okay, however, this is by no means an all exhaustive test. So,
it's possible that a bumpy road may lay ahead for some. On the other
hand...overflows (hopefully) previously lurked (long -> int conversion).

45e2544584 As discussed on several occasions previously, the new anonymous
composite type capability makes it possible to create a system view
based on a table function in a way that is hopefully palatable to
everyone. The attached patch takes advantage of this, moving
show_all_settings() from contrib/tablefunc into the backend (renamed
all_settings(). It is defined as a builtin returning type RECORD. During
initdb a system view is created to expose the same information presently
available through SHOW ALL. For example:

test=# select * from pg_settings where name like '%debug%';
          name | setting
-----------------------+---------
  debug_assertions | on
  debug_pretty_print | off
  debug_print_parse | off
  debug_print_plan | off
  debug_print_query | off
  debug_print_rewritten | off
  wal_debug | 0
(7 rows)

Additionally during initdb two rules are created which make it possible
to change settings by updating the system view -- a "virtual table" as
Tom put it. Here's an example:

This concludes my changes that restructured the code to support JDBC3.
The jdbc unit tests were also resturctured to allow different tests between

runs the JDBC2 tests. Of special note the largeobject/PGblob and PGclob

now differ by jdbc version. Also note that this checkin removes the
PostgresqlDataSource and files in the xa directory. A recent checkin has

(they are not part of a chain). When failing to find a parent tuple in
an update chain, emit a warning and abandon repair_frag, but do not give
an error as before. This should eliminate the infamous 'No one parent tuple
was found' failure, which we now realize is not a can't-happen condition
but a perfectly valid database state. Per recent pghackers discussion.

2e10863bf5 Now that we allow ANALYZE to run inside a transaction block, the locks
it takes could be held for quite awhile after the analyze step completes.
Rethink locking of pg_statistic in light of this fact. The original
scheme took an exclusive lock on pg_statistic, which was okay when the
lock could be expected to be released shortly, but that doesn't hold
anymore. Back off to a normal writer's lock (RowExclusiveLock). This
allows concurrent ANALYZE of nonoverlapping sets of tables, at the price
that concurrent ANALYZEs of the same table may fail with 'tuple
concurrently updated'.

I update two tuples, so I manually CatalogOpenIndexes() and
CatalogIndexInsert() two times, as per comments in
CatalogUpdateIndexes().

I also removed a couple of useless CommandCounterIncrement(), some
useless definitions in src/include/commands/cluster.h and useless

a6c7681997 This patch changes the behavior of PostgreSQL so that if any queries are
executed in an implicitely aborted transaction (e.g. after an occur
occurs), we return an error (and not just a warning). For example:

nconway=# begin;
BEGIN
nconway=# insert; -- syntax error
ERROR: parser: parse error at or near ";"
nconway=# select * from a;
ERROR: current transaction is aborted, queries ignored until end of
transaction block

The old behavior was:

nconway=# begin;
BEGIN
nconway=# insert;
ERROR: parser: parse error at or near ";"
nconway=# select * from a;
WARNING: current transaction is aborted, queries ignored until end
of transaction block
*ABORT STATE*

Which can be confusing: if the client isn't paying careful attention,
they will conclude that the query has executed (because no error is
returned).

5df307c778 Restructure local-buffer handling per recent pghackers discussion.
The local buffer manager is no longer used for newly-created relations
(unless they are TEMP); a new non-TEMP relation goes through the shared
bufmgr and thus will participate normally in checkpoints. But TEMP relations
use the local buffer manager throughout their lifespan. Also, operations
in TEMP relations are not logged in WAL, thus improving performance.
Since it's no longer necessary to fsync relations as they move out of the
local buffers into shared buffers, quite a lot of smgr.c/md.c/fd.c code
is no longer needed and has been removed: there's no concept of a dirty
relation anymore in md.c/fd.c, and we never fsync anything but WAL.
Still TODO: improve local buffer management algorithms so that it would
be reasonable to increase NLocBuffer.

reduces the common case of updating system catalog indexes to a single

can now do so on-the-fly if you want to), and as a nice side benefit
improves performance a little. Per recent pghackers discussion.

9218689b69 Attached are two patches to implement and document anonymous composite
types for Table Functions, as previously proposed on HACKERS. Here is a
brief explanation:

1. Creates a new pg_type typtype: 'p' for pseudo type (currently either
'b' for base or 'c' for catalog, i.e. a class).

2. Creates new builtin type of typtype='p' named RECORD. This is the
first of potentially several pseudo types.

3. Modify FROM clause grammer to accept:
     SELECT * FROM my_func() AS m(colname1 type1, colname2 type1, ...)
where m is the table alias, colname1, etc are the column names, and
type1, etc are the column types.

4. When typtype == 'p' and the function return type is RECORD, a list
of column defs is required, and when typtype != 'p', it is
disallowed.

5. A check was added to ensure that the tupdesc provide via the parser
and the actual return tupdesc match in number and type of
attributes.

When creating a function you can do:
CREATE FUNCTION foo(text) RETURNS setof RECORD ...

When using it you can do:
     SELECT * from foo(sqlstmt) AS (f1 int, f2 text, f3 timestamp)
       or
     SELECT * from foo(sqlstmt) AS f(f1 int, f2 text, f3 timestamp)
       or
     SELECT * from foo(sqlstmt) f(f1 int, f2 text, f3 timestamp)

Included in the patches are adjustments to the regression test sql and
expected files, and documentation.

p.s.
This potentially solves (or at least improves) the issue of builtin
Table Functions. They can be bootstrapped as returning RECORD, and
we can wrap system views around them with properly specified column
     defs. For example:

     CREATE VIEW pg_settings AS
       SELECT s.name, s.setting
       FROM show_all_settings()AS s(name text, setting text);

Then we can also add the UPDATE RULE that I previously posted to
pg_settings, and have pg_settings act like a virtual table, allowing
settings to be queried and set.

22c64f1834 When compiling with --enable-cassert, check for reference count leaks
in the relcache. It's rather silly that we have reference count leak
checks in bufmgr and in catcache, but not in relcache which will normally
have many fewer entries. Chris K-L would have caught at least one bug
in his recent DROP patch if he'd had this.

154f26ff59 RemoveAttrDefaultById() neglected to obtain exclusive lock on the
relation being modified. In most paths of control we'd already have
such a lock, but if we were dropping the default due to a cascaded
delete of some function it depended on, maybe not.

38bb77a5d1 ALTER TABLE DROP COLUMN works. Patch by Christopher Kings-Lynne,
code review by Tom Lane. Remaining issues: functions that take or
return tuple types are likely to break if one drops (or adds!)
a column in the table defining the type. Need to think about what
to do here.

Along the way: some code review for recent COPY changes; mark system
columns attnotnull = true where appropriate, per discussion a month ago.

ce7565ab91 Instead of having a configure-time DEFAULT_ATTSTATTARGET, store -1 in
attstattarget to indicate 'use the default'. The default is now a GUC
variable default_statistics_target, and so may be changed on the fly. Along
the way we gain the ability to have pg_dump dump the per-column statistics
target when it's not the default. Patch by Neil Conway, with some kibitzing
from Tom Lane.

4ad658cac9 Teach pg_dump to dump user-defined operator classes. For the moment,
this only works against 7.3 or later databases; the pushups required
to do it without regprocedure/regtype/etc seem more trouble than they're
worth, considering that existing users aren't expecting pg_dump support
for this.

874148fe34 IMPROVED VERSION APPLIED:
The attached patch completes the following TODO item:

    * Generate failure on short COPY lines rather than pad NULLs

I also restructed a lot of the existing COPY code, did some code
review on the column list patch sent in by Brent Verner a little
while ago, and added some regression tests. I also added an
explicit check (and resultant error) for extra data before
the end-of-line.

210e64fe08 Added support for schemas and quotes in tab-complete.c, as well as
a few other things:

* Made all references to the pg_* tables absolute, by specifying
  the pg_catalog schema.

* Added SCHEMA as a create/delete completion option.

* Added SCHEMA completion as: SELECT nspname FROM
pg_catalog.pg_namespace
  WHERE substr(nspname,1,%d)='%s'

* Added completion of "INSERT INTO <table> (" with attribute names.

* Added completion of "INSERT INTO <table> (attribs)" with
  VALUES or SELECT

* Added limited locking completion: only for one table:
"LOCK" and "LOCK TABLE" now both get a completion list of tables
Complete with "IN" for LOCK [TABLE] <table>
Complete LOCK [TABLE] <table> IN with a lock mode

* Added a very simple WHERE finisher that uses the previous word
as a table lookup for attributes.

* Added quote support when parsing "previous words". In other words,
hitting tab after INSERT INTO "foo bar baby"
now does the right thing and recognizes "foo bar baby" as one word.

Letting tab-complete quote things that should be quoted seems to be
temporarily ifdef'ed out due to readline compatibility problems.
Can anyone elaborate on this?

578e71fee5 This should fix a bug where a row that was updated or
deleted that had another row inserted/updated to its old
value during the same statement or other statements before the
integrity check for noaction would incorrectly error. This
could happen in deferred constraints or due to triggers or
functions. It's effectively a reworking of the previous patch that
did a not exists to instead do a separate check.

23a8b77d42 Here are two patches. The guc_and_tablefunc patch addresses the two
changes mentioned above, and also adds a new function to the tablefunc
API. The tablefunc API change adds the following function:

* Oid foidGetTypeId(Oid foid) - Get a function's typeid given the
* function Oid. Use this together with TypeGetTupleDesc() to get a
* TupleDesc which is derived from the function's declared return type.

In the next post I'll send the contrib/tablefunc patch, which
illustrates the usage of this new function. Also attached is a doc patch
for this change. The doc patch also adds a function that I failed to
document previously.

1e3187366c Initial restructuring to add jdbc3 support. There was a significant amount
of duplicated code between the jdbc1 and jdbc2. This checkin restructures
the code so that the duplication is removed so that the jdbc3 support
can be added without adding yet another copy of everything. Also many
classes were renamed to avoid confusion with multiple different objects
having the same name. The timestamp tests were also updated to add support
for testing timestamp without time zone in addition to timestamp with time zone
