Tom Lane 5cbfce562f Initial pgindent and pgperltidy run for v13.
Includes some manual cleanup of places that pgindent messed up,
most of which weren't per project style anyway.

Notably, it seems some people didn't absorb the style rules of
commit c9d297751, because there were a bunch of new occurrences
of function calls with a newline just after the left paren, all
with faulty expectations about how the rest of the call would get
indented.

Alvaro Herrera 3e9744465d
Add -Wimplicit-fallthrough to CFLAGS and CXXFLAGS
Use it at level 4, a bit more restrictive than the default level, and
tweak our commanding comments to FALLTHROUGH.

(However, leave zic.c alone, since it's external code; to avoid the
warnings that would appear there, change CFLAGS for that file in the
Makefile.)

Alexander Korotkov 0f5ca02f53 Implement waiting for given lsn at transaction start
This commit adds following optional clause to BEGIN and START TRANSACTION
commands.

  WAIT FOR LSN lsn [ TIMEOUT timeout ]

New clause pospones transaction start till given lsn is applied on standby.
This clause allows user be sure, that changes previously made on primary would
be visible on standby.

New shared memory struct is used to track awaited lsn per backend.  Recovery
process wakes up backend once required lsn is applied.

Tom Lane 0b34e7d307 Improve user control over truncation of logged bind-parameter values.
This patch replaces the boolean GUC log_parameters_on_error introduced
by commit ba79cb5dc with an integer log_parameter_max_length_on_error,
adding the ability to specify how many bytes to trim each logged
parameter value to.  (The previous coding hard-wired that choice at
64 bytes.)

In addition, add a new parameter log_parameter_max_length that provides
similar control over truncation of query parameters that are logged in
response to statement-logging options, as opposed to errors.  Previous
releases always logged such parameters in full, possibly causing log
bloat.

For backwards compatibility with prior releases,
log_parameter_max_length defaults to -1 (log in full), while
log_parameter_max_length_on_error defaults to 0 (no logging).

Per discussion, log_parameter_max_length is SUSET since the DBA should
control routine logging behavior, but log_parameter_max_length_on_error
is USERSET because it also affects errcontext data sent back to the
client.

Fujii Masao 6aba63ef3e Allow the planner-related functions and hook to accept the query string.
This commit adds query_string argument into the planner-related functions
and hook and allows us to pass the query string to them.

Currently there is no user of the query string passed. But the upcoming patch
for the planning counters will add the planning hook function into
pg_stat_statements and the function will need the query string. So this change
will be necessary for that patch.

Also this change is useful for some extensions that want to use the query
string in their planner hook function.

Tom Lane e3a87b4991 Re-implement the ereport() macro using __VA_ARGS__.
Now that we require C99, we can depend on __VA_ARGS__ to work, and
revising ereport() to use it has several significant benefits:

* The extra parentheses around the auxiliary function calls are now
optional.  Aside from being a bit less ugly, this removes a common
gotcha for new contributors, because in some cases the compiler errors
you got from forgetting them were unintelligible.

* The auxiliary function calls are now evaluated as a comma expression
list rather than as extra arguments to errfinish().  This means that
compilers can be expected to warn about no-op expressions in the list,
allowing detection of several other common mistakes such as forgetting
to add errmsg(...) when converting an elog() call to ereport().

* Unlike the situation with extra function arguments, comma expressions
are guaranteed to be evaluated left-to-right, so this removes platform
dependency in the order of the auxiliary function calls.  While that
dependency hasn't caused us big problems in the past, this change does
allow dropping some rather shaky assumptions around errcontext() domain
handling.

There's no intention to make wholesale changes of existing ereport
calls, but as proof-of-concept this patch removes the extra parens
from a couple of calls in postgres.c.

While new code can be written either way, code intended to be
back-patched will need to use extra parens for awhile yet.  It seems
worth back-patching this change into v12, so as to reduce the window
where we have to be careful about that by one year.  Hence, this patch
is careful to preserve ABI compatibility; a followup HEAD-only patch
will make some additional simplifications.

Peter Eisentraut bf68b79e50 Refactor ps_status.c API
The init_ps_display() arguments were mostly lies by now, so to match
typical usage, just use one argument and let the caller assemble it
from multiple sources if necessary.  The only user of the additional
arguments is BackendInitialize(), which was already doing string
assembly on the caller side anyway.

Remove the second argument of set_ps_display() ("force") and just
handle that in init_ps_display() internally.

BackendInitialize() also used to set the initial status as
"authentication", but that was very far from where authentication
actually happened.  So now it's set to "initializing" and then
"authentication" just before the actual call to
ClientAuthentication().

Tom Lane fe30e7ebfa Allow ALTER TYPE to change some properties of a base type.
Specifically, this patch allows ALTER TYPE to:
* Change the default TOAST strategy for a toastable base type;
* Promote a non-toastable type to toastable;
* Add/remove binary I/O functions for a type;
* Add/remove typmod I/O functions for a type;
* Add/remove a custom ANALYZE statistics functions for a type.

The first of these can be done by the type's owner; all the others
require superuser privilege since misuse could cause problems.

The main motivation for this patch is to allow extensions to
upgrade the feature sets of their data types, so the set of
alterable properties is biased towards that use-case.  However
it's also true that changing some other properties would be
a lot harder, as they get baked into physical storage and/or
stored expressions that depend on the type.

Along the way, refactor GenerateTypeDependencies() to make it easier
to call, refactor DefineType's volatility checks so they can be shared
by AlterType, and teach typcache.c that it might have to reload data
from the type's pg_type row, a scenario it never handled before.
Also rearrange alter_type.sgml a bit for clarity (put the
composite-type operations together).

Represent command completion tags as structs
The backend was using strings to represent command tags and doing string
comparisons in multiple places, but that's slow and unhelpful.  Create a
new command list with a supporting structure to use instead; this is
stored in a tag-list-file that can be tailored to specific purposes with
a caller-definable C macro, similar to what we do for WAL resource
managers.  The first first such uses are a new CommandTag enum and a
CommandTagBehavior struct.

Replace numerous occurrences of char *completionTag with a
QueryCompletion struct so that the code no longer stores information
about completed queries in a cstring.  Only at the last moment, in
EndCommand(), does this get converted to a string.

EventTriggerCacheItem no longer holds an array of palloc’d tag strings
in sorted order, but rather just a Bitmapset over the CommandTags.

Add comments on avoid reuse of parse-time snapshot
Apparently, reusing the parse-time query snapshot for later steps
(execution) is a frequently considered optimization ... but it doesn't
work, for reasons discovered in thread [1].  Adding some comments about
why it doesn't really work can relieve some future hackers from wasting
time reimplementing it again.

Alvaro Herrera c9d2977519 Clean up newlines following left parentheses
We used to strategically place newlines after some function call left
parentheses to make pgindent move the argument list a few chars to the
left, so that the whole line would fit under 80 chars.  However,
pgindent no longer does that, so the newlines just made the code
vertically longer for no reason.  Remove those newlines, and reflow some
of those lines for some extra naturality.

Tom Lane 9c679a08f0 Silence minor compiler warnings.
Ensure that ClassifyUtilityCommandAsReadOnly() has defined behavior
even if TransactionStmt.kind has a value that's not one of the
declared values for its enum.

Suppress warnings from compilers that don't know that elog(ERROR)
doesn't return, in ClassifyUtilityCommandAsReadOnly() and
jsonb_set_lax().

Robert Haas 2eb34ac369 Fix problems with "read only query" checks, and refactor the code.
Previously, check_xact_readonly() was responsible for determining
which types of queries could not be run in a read-only transaction,
standard_ProcessUtility() was responsibility for prohibiting things
which were allowed in read only transactions but not in recovery, and
utility commands were basically prohibited in bulk in parallel mode by
calls to CommandIsReadOnly() in functions.c and spi.c.  This situation
was confusing and error-prone. Accordingly, move all the checks to a
new function ClassifyUtilityCommandAsReadOnly(), which determines the
degree to which a given statement is read only.

In the old code, check_xact_readonly() inadvertently failed to handle
several statement types that actually should have been prohibited,
specifically T_CreatePolicyStmt, T_AlterPolicyStmt, T_CreateAmStmt,
T_CreateStatsStmt, T_AlterStatsStmt, and T_AlterCollationStmt.  As a
result, thes statements were erroneously allowed in read only
transactions, parallel queries, and standby operation. Generally, they
would fail anyway due to some lower-level error check, but we
shouldn't rely on that.  In the new code structure, future omissions
of this type should cause ClassifyUtilityCommandAsReadOnly() to
complain about an unrecognized node type.

As a fringe benefit, this means we can allow certain types of utility
commands in parallel mode, where it's safe to do so. This allows
ALTER SYSTEM, CALL, DO, CHECKPOINT, COPY FROM, EXPLAIN, and SHOW.
It might be possible to allow additional commands with more work
and thought.

Along the way, document the thinking process behind the current set
of checks, as per discussion especially with Peter Eisentraut. There
is some interest in revising some of these rules, but that seems
like a job for another patch.

Tom Lane 1281a5c907 Restructure ALTER TABLE execution to fix assorted bugs.
We've had numerous bug reports about how (1) IF NOT EXISTS clauses in
ALTER TABLE don't behave as-expected, and (2) combining certain actions
into one ALTER TABLE doesn't work, though executing the same actions as
separate statements does.  This patch cleans up all of the cases so far
reported from the field, though there are still some oddities associated
with identity columns.

The core problem behind all of these bugs is that we do parse analysis
of ALTER TABLE subcommands too soon, before starting execution of the
statement.  The root of the bugs in group (1) is that parse analysis
schedules derived commands (such as a CREATE SEQUENCE for a serial
column) before it's known whether the IF NOT EXISTS clause should cause
a subcommand to be skipped.  The root of the bugs in group (2) is that
earlier subcommands may change the catalog state that later subcommands
need to be parsed against.

Hence, postpone parse analysis of ALTER TABLE's subcommands, and do
that one subcommand at a time, during "phase 2" of ALTER TABLE which
is the phase that does catalog rewrites.  Thus the catalog effects
of earlier subcommands are already visible when we analyze later ones.
(The sole exception is that we do parse analysis for ALTER COLUMN TYPE
subcommands during phase 1, so that their USING expressions can be
parsed against the table's original state, which is what we need.
Arguably, these bugs stem from falsely concluding that because ALTER
COLUMN TYPE must do early parse analysis, every other command subtype
can too.)

This means that ALTER TABLE itself must deal with execution of any
non-ALTER-TABLE derived statements that are generated by parse analysis.
Add a suitable entry point to utility.c to accept those recursive
calls, and create a struct to pass through the information needed by
the recursive call, rather than making the argument lists of
AlterTable() and friends even longer.

Getting this to work correctly required a little bit of fiddling
with the subcommand pass structure, in particular breaking up
AT_PASS_ADD_CONSTR into multiple passes.  But otherwise it's mostly
a pretty straightforward application of the above ideas.

Fixing the residual issues for identity columns requires refactoring of
where the dependency link from an identity column to its sequence gets
set up.  So that seems like suitable material for a separate patch,
especially since this one is pretty big already.

Peter Eisentraut 3fd40b628c Make better use of ParseState in ProcessUtility
Pass ParseState into the functions called from
standard_ProcessUtility() instead passing the query string and query
environment separately.  No functionality change, but it makes the
notation consistent.  We had already started moving things into
that direction piece by piece, and this completes it.

Robert Haas 16a4e4aecd Extend the ProcSignal mechanism to support barriers.
A new function EmitProcSignalBarrier() can be used to emit a global
barrier which all backends that participate in the ProcSignal
mechanism must absorb, and a new function WaitForProcSignalBarrier()
can be used to wait until all relevant backends have in fact
absorbed the barrier.

This can be used to coordinate global state changes, such as turning
checksums on while the system is running.

There's no real client of this mechanism yet, although two are
proposed, but an enum has to have at least one element, so this
includes a placeholder type (PROCSIGNAL_BARRIER_PLACEHOLDER) which
should be replaced by the first real client of this mechanism to
get committed.

Robert Haas 7dbfea3c45 Partially deduplicate interrupt handling for background processes.
Where possible, share signal handler code and main loop interrupt
checking. This saves quite a bit of code and should simplify
maintenance, too.

This commit intends not to change the way anything works, even
though that might allow more code to be unified. It does unify
a bunch of individual variables into a ShutdownRequestPending
flag that has is now used by a bunch of different process types,
though.

Alvaro Herrera 6cafde1bd4 Add backend-only appendStringInfoStringQuoted
This provides a mechanism to emit literal values in informative
messages, such as query parameters.  The new code is more complex than
what it replaces, primarily because it wants to be more efficient.
It also has the (currently unused) additional optional capability of
specifying a maximum size to print.

The new function lives out of common/stringinfo.c so that frontend users
of that file need not pull in unnecessary multibyte-encoding support
code.

Tom Lane 7900269724 Stabilize NOTIFY behavior by transmitting notifies before ReadyForQuery.
This patch ensures that, if any notify messages were received during
a just-finished transaction, they get sent to the frontend just before
not just after the ReadyForQuery message.  With libpq and other client
libraries that act similarly, this guarantees that the client will see
the notify messages as available as soon as it thinks the transaction
is done.

This probably makes no difference in practice, since in realistic
use-cases the application would have to cope with asynchronous
arrival of notify events anyhow.  However, it makes it a lot easier
to build cross-session-notify test cases with stable behavior.
I'm a bit surprised now that we've not seen any buildfarm instability
with the test cases added by commit b10f40bf0.  Tests that I intend
to add in an upcoming bug fix are definitely unstable without this.

Back-patch to 9.6, which is as far back as we can do NOTIFY testing
with the isolationtester infrastructure.

Amit Kapila 1379fd537f Introduce the 'force' option for the Drop Database command.
This new option terminates the other sessions connected to the target
database and then drop it.  To terminate other sessions, the current user
must have desired permissions (same as pg_terminate_backend()).  We don't
allow to terminate the sessions if prepared transactions, active logical
replication slots or subscriptions are present in the target database.

Tomas Vondra 6e3e6cc0e8 Allow sampling of statements depending on duration
This allows logging a sample of statements, without incurring excessive
log traffic (which may impact performance).  This can be useful when
analyzing workloads with lots of short queries.

The sampling is configured using two new GUC parameters:

 * log_min_duration_sample - minimum required statement duration

 * log_statement_sample_rate - sample rate (0.0 - 1.0)

Only statements with duration exceeding log_min_duration_sample are
considered for sampling. To enable sampling, both those GUCs have to
be set correctly.

The existing log_min_duration_statement GUC has a higher priority, i.e.
statements with duration exceeding log_min_duration_statement will be
always logged, irrespectedly of how the sampling is configured. This
means only configurations

  log_min_duration_sample < log_min_duration_statement

do actually sample the statements, instead of logging everything.

Fujii Masao 979766c0af Correct the command tags for ALTER ... RENAME COLUMN.
Previously ALTER MATERIALIZED VIEW / FOREIGN TABLE ... RENAME COLUMN ...
returned "ALTER TABLE" as a command tag. This commit fixes them so that
they return "ALTER MATERIALIZED VIEW" and "ALTER FOREIGN TABLE" as
command tags, respectively.

This issue exists in all supported versions, but we don't back-patch this
because it's not enough of a bug to justify taking any compatibility risks for.
Otherwise, the back-patch would cause minor version update to break,
for example, the existing event trigger functions using TG_TAG.

Andres Freund 01368e5d9d Split all OBJS style lines in makefiles into one-line-per-entry style.
When maintaining or merging patches, one of the most common sources
for conflicts are the list of objects in makefiles. Especially when
the split across lines has been changed on both sides, which is
somewhat common due to attempting to stay below 80 columns, those
conflicts are unnecessarily laborious to resolve.

By splitting, and alphabetically sorting, OBJS style lines into one
object per line, conflicts should be less frequent, and easier to
resolve when they still occur.

Tom Lane 22f6f2c1cc Improve management of statement timeouts.
Commit f8e5f156b added private state in postgres.c to track whether
a statement timeout is running.  This seems like bad design to me;
timeout.c's private state should be the single source of truth about
that.  We already fixed one bug associated with failure to keep those
states in sync (cf. be42015fc), and I've got little faith that we
won't find more in future.  So get rid of postgres.c's local variable
by exposing a way to ask timeout.c whether a timeout is running.
(Obviously, such an inquiry is subject to race conditions, but it
seems fine for the purpose at hand.)

To make get_timeout_active() as cheap as possible, add a flag in
the per-timeout struct showing whether that timeout is active.
This allows some small savings elsewhere in timeout.c, mainly
elimination of unnecessary searches of the active_timeouts array.

While at it, fix enable_statement_timeout to not call disable_timeout
when statement_timeout is 0 and the timeout is not running.  This
avoids a useless deschedule-and-reschedule-timeouts cycle, which
represents a significant savings (at least one kernel call) when
there is any other active timeout.  Right now, there usually isn't,
but there are proposals around to change that.

Tom Lane 2b2bacdca0 Reset statement_timeout between queries of a multi-query string.
Historically, we started the timer (if StatementTimeout > 0) at the
beginning of a simple-Query message and usually let it run until the
end, so that the timeout limit applied to the entire query string,
and intra-string changes of the statement_timeout GUC had no effect.
But, confusingly, a COMMIT within the string would reset the state
and allow a fresh timeout cycle to start with the current setting.

Commit f8e5f156b changed the behavior of statement_timeout for extended
query protocol, and as an apparently-unintended side effect, a change in
the statement_timeout GUC during a multi-statement simple-Query message
might have an effect immediately --- but only if it was going from
"disabled" to "enabled".

This is all pretty confusing, not to mention completely undocumented.
Let's change things so that the timeout is always reset between queries
of a multi-query string, whether they're transaction control commands
or not.  Thus the active timeout setting is applied to each query in
the string, separately.  This costs a few more cycles if statement_timeout
is active, but it provides much more intuitive behavior, especially if one
changes statement_timeout in one of the queries of the string.

Also, add something to the documentation to explain all this.

Per bug #16035 from Raj Mohite.  Although this is a bug fix, I'm hesitant
to back-patch it; conceivably somebody has worked out the old behavior
and is depending on it.  (But note that this change should make the
behavior less restrictive in most cases, since the timeout will now
be applied to shorter segments of code.)

Michael Paquier 9555cc8d2b Revert hooks for session start and end, take two
The location of the session end hook has been chosen so as it is
possible to allow modules to do their own transactions, however any
trying to any any subsystem which went through before_shmem_exit()
would cause issues, limiting the pluggability of the hook.

Michael Paquier e788bd924c Add hooks for session start and session end, take two
These hooks can be used in loadable modules.  A simple test module is
included.

The first attempt was done with cd8ce3a but we lacked handling for
NO_INSTALLCHECK in the MSVC scripts (problem solved afterwards by
431f1599) so the buildfarm got angry.  This also fixes a couple of
issues noticed upon review compared to the first attempt, so the code
has slightly changed, resulting in a more simple test module.

Tomas Vondra d06215d03b Allow setting statistics target for extended statistics
When building statistics, we need to decide how many rows to sample and
how accurate the resulting statistics should be. Until now, it was not
possible to explicitly define statistics target for extended statistics
objects, the value was always computed from the per-attribute targets
with a fallback to the system-wide default statistics target.

That's a bit inconvenient, as it ties together the statistics target set
for per-column and extended statistics. In some cases it may be useful
to require larger sample / higher accuracy for extended statics (or the
other way around), but with this approach that's not possible.

So this commit introduces a new command, allowing to specify statistics
target for individual extended statistics objects, overriding the value
derived from per-attribute targets (and the system default).

  ALTER STATISTICS stat_name SET STATISTICS target_value;

When determining statistics target for an extended statistics object we
first look at this explicitly set value. When this value is -1, we fall
back to the old formula, looking at the per-attribute targets first and
then the system default. This means the behavior is backwards compatible
with older PostgreSQL releases.

Tom Lane 1cff1b95ab Represent Lists as expansible arrays, not chains of cons-cells.
Originally, Postgres Lists were a more or less exact reimplementation of
Lisp lists, which consist of chains of separately-allocated cons cells,
each having a value and a next-cell link.  We'd hacked that once before
(commit d0b4399d8) to add a separate List header, but the data was still
in cons cells.  That makes some operations -- notably list_nth() -- O(N),
and it's bulky because of the next-cell pointers and per-cell palloc
overhead, and it's very cache-unfriendly if the cons cells end up
scattered around rather than being adjacent.

In this rewrite, we still have List headers, but the data is in a
resizable array of values, with no next-cell links.  Now we need at
most two palloc's per List, and often only one, since we can allocate
some values in the same palloc call as the List header.  (Of course,
extending an existing List may require repalloc's to enlarge the array.
But this involves just O(log N) allocations not O(N).)

Of course this is not without downsides.  The key difficulty is that
addition or deletion of a list entry may now cause other entries to
move, which it did not before.

For example, that breaks foreach() and sister macros, which historically
used a pointer to the current cons-cell as loop state.  We can repair
those macros transparently by making their actual loop state be an
integer list index; the exposed "ListCell *" pointer is no longer state
carried across loop iterations, but is just a derived value.  (In
practice, modern compilers can optimize things back to having just one
loop state value, at least for simple cases with inline loop bodies.)
In principle, this is a semantics change for cases where the loop body
inserts or deletes list entries ahead of the current loop index; but
I found no such cases in the Postgres code.

The change is not at all transparent for code that doesn't use foreach()
but chases lists "by hand" using lnext().  The largest share of such
code in the backend is in loops that were maintaining "prev" and "next"
variables in addition to the current-cell pointer, in order to delete
list cells efficiently using list_delete_cell().  However, we no longer
need a previous-cell pointer to delete a list cell efficiently.  Keeping
a next-cell pointer doesn't work, as explained above, but we can improve
matters by changing such code to use a regular foreach() loop and then
using the new macro foreach_delete_current() to delete the current cell.
(This macro knows how to update the associated foreach loop's state so
that no cells will be missed in the traversal.)

There remains a nontrivial risk of code assuming that a ListCell *
pointer will remain good over an operation that could now move the list
contents.  To help catch such errors, list.c can be compiled with a new
define symbol DEBUG_LIST_MEMORY_USAGE that forcibly moves list contents
whenever that could possibly happen.  This makes list operations
significantly more expensive so it's not normally turned on (though it
is on by default if USE_VALGRIND is on).

There are two notable API differences from the previous code:

* lnext() now requires the List's header pointer in addition to the
current cell's address.

* list_delete_cell() no longer requires a previous-cell argument.

These changes are somewhat unfortunate, but on the other hand code using
either function needs inspection to see if it is assuming anything
it shouldn't, so it's not all bad.

Programmers should be aware of these significant performance changes:

* list_nth() and related functions are now O(1); so there's no
major access-speed difference between a list and an array.

* Inserting or deleting a list element now takes time proportional to
the distance to the end of the list, due to moving the array elements.
(However, it typically *doesn't* require palloc or pfree, so except in
long lists it's probably still faster than before.)  Notably, lcons()
used to be about the same cost as lappend(), but that's no longer true
if the list is long.  Code that uses lcons() and list_delete_first()
to maintain a stack might usefully be rewritten to push and pop at the
end of the list rather than the beginning.

* There are now list_insert_nth...() and list_delete_nth...() functions
that add or remove a list cell identified by index.  These have the
data-movement penalty explained above, but there's no search penalty.

* list_concat() and variants now copy the second list's data into
storage belonging to the first list, so there is no longer any
sharing of cells between the input lists.  The second argument is
now declared "const List *" to reflect that it isn't changed.

This patch just does the minimum needed to get the new implementation
in place and fix bugs exposed by the regression tests.  As suggested
by the foregoing, there's a fair amount of followup work remaining to
do.

Also, the ENABLE_LIST_COMPAT macros are finally removed in this
commit.  Code using those should have been gone a dozen years ago.

Tom Lane b5810de3f4 Reduce memory consumption for multi-statement query strings.
Previously, exec_simple_query always ran parse analysis, rewrite, and
planning in MessageContext, allowing all the data generated thereby
to persist until the end of processing of the whole query string.
That's fine for single-command strings, but if a client sends many
commands in a single simple-Query message, this strategy could result
in annoying memory bloat, as complained of by Andreas Seltenreich.

To fix, create a child context to do this work in, and reclaim it
after each command.  But we only do so for parsetrees that are not
last in their query string.  That avoids adding any memory management
overhead for the typical case of a single-command string.  Memory
allocated for the last parsetree would be freed immediately after
finishing the command string anyway.

Similarly, adjust extension.c's execute_sql_string() to reclaim memory
after each command.  In that usage, multi-command strings are the norm,
so it's a bit surprising that no one has yet complained of bloat ---
especially since the bloat extended to whatever data ProcessUtility
execution might leak.

Alvaro Herrera 55ed3defc9 Fix partitioned index creation with foreign partitions
When a partitioned tables contains foreign tables as partitions, it is
not possible to implement unique or primary key indexes -- but when
regular indexes are created, there is no reason to do anything other
than ignoring such partitions.  We were raising errors upon encountering
the foreign partitions, which is unfriendly and doesn't protect against
any actual problems.

Relax this restriction so that index creation is allowed on partitioned
tables containing foreign partitions, becoming a no-op on them.  (We may
later want to redefine this so that the FDW is told to create the
indexes on the foreign side.)  This applies to CREATE INDEX, as well as
ALTER TABLE / ATTACH PARTITION and CREATE TABLE / PARTITION OF.

Backpatch to 11, where indexes on partitioned tables were introduced.

Peter Eisentraut cd3e27464c Fix potential catalog corruption with temporary identity columns
If a temporary table with an identity column and ON COMMIT DROP is
created in a single-statement transaction (not useful, but allowed),
it would leave the catalog corrupted.  We need to add a
CommandCounterIncrement() so that PreCommit_on_commit_actions() sees
the created dependency between table and sequence and can clean it
up.

The analogous and more useful case of doing this in a transaction
block already runs some CommandCounterIncrement() before it gets to
the on-commit cleanup, so it wasn't a problem in practical use.

Several locations for placing the new CommandCounterIncrement() call
were discussed.  This patch places it at the end of
standard_ProcessUtility().  That would also help if other commands
were to create catalog entries that some on-commit action would like
to see.

This adds the CONCURRENTLY option to the REINDEX command.  A REINDEX
CONCURRENTLY on a specific index creates a new index (like CREATE
INDEX CONCURRENTLY), then renames the old index away and the new index
in place and adjusts the dependencies, and then drops the old
index (like DROP INDEX CONCURRENTLY).  The REINDEX command also has
the capability to run its other variants (TABLE, DATABASE) with the
CONCURRENTLY option (but not SYSTEM).

The reindexdb command gets the --concurrently option.

Add command variants COMMIT AND CHAIN and ROLLBACK AND CHAIN, which
start new transactions with the same transaction characteristics as the
just finished one, per SQL standard.

Support for transaction chaining in PL/pgSQL is also added.  This
functionality is especially useful when running COMMIT in a loop in
PL/pgSQL.

Robert Haas 6776142a07 Revise parse tree representation for VACUUM and ANALYZE.
Like commit f41551f61f, this aims
to make it easier to add non-Boolean options to VACUUM (or, in
this case, to ANALYZE).  Instead of building up a bitmap of
options directly in the parser, build up a list of DefElem
objects and let ExecVacuum() sort it out; right now, we make
no use of the fact that a DefElem can carry an associated value,
but it will be easy to make that change in the future.

Tom Lane f09346a9c6 Refactor planner's header files.
Create a new header optimizer/optimizer.h, which exposes just the
planner functions that can be used "at arm's length", without need
to access Paths or the other planner-internal data structures defined
in nodes/relation.h.  This is intended to provide the whole planner
API seen by most of the rest of the system; although FDWs still need
to use additional stuff, and more thought is also needed about just
what selfuncs.c should rely on.

The main point of doing this now is to limit the amount of new
#include baggage that will be needed by "planner support functions",
which I expect to introduce later, and which will be in relevant
datatype modules rather than anywhere near the planner.

This commit just moves relevant declarations into optimizer.h from
other header files (a couple of which go away because everything
got moved), and adjusts #include lists to match.  There's further
cleanup that could be done if we want to decide that some stuff
being exposed by optimizer.h doesn't belong in the planner at all,
but I'll leave that for another day.

Andres Freund a9c35cf85c Change function call information to be variable length.
Before this change FunctionCallInfoData, the struct arguments etc for
V1 function calls are stored in, always had space for
FUNC_MAX_ARGS/100 arguments, storing datums and their nullness in two
arrays.  For nearly every function call 100 arguments is far more than
needed, therefore wasting memory. Arg and argnull being two separate
arrays also guarantees that to access a single argument, two
cachelines have to be touched.

Change the layout so there's a single variable-length array with pairs
of value / isnull. That drastically reduces memory consumption for
most function calls (on x86-64 a two argument function now uses
64bytes, previously 936 bytes), and makes it very likely that argument
value and its nullness are on the same cacheline.

Arguments are stored in a new NullableDatum struct, which, due to
padding, needs more memory per argument than before. But as usually
far fewer arguments are stored, and individual arguments are cheaper
to access, that's still a clear win.  It's likely that there's other
places where conversion to NullableDatum arrays would make sense,
e.g. TupleTableSlots, but that's for another commit.

Because the function call information is now variable-length
allocations have to take the number of arguments into account. For
heap allocations that can be done with SizeForFunctionCallInfoData(),
for on-stack allocations there's a new LOCAL_FCINFO(name, nargs) macro
that helps to allocate an appropriately sized and aligned variable.

Some places with stack allocation function call information don't know
the number of arguments at compile time, and currently variably sized
stack allocations aren't allowed in postgres. Therefore allow for
FUNC_MAX_ARGS space in these cases. They're not that common, so for
now that seems acceptable.

Because of the need to allocate FunctionCallInfo of the appropriate
size, older extensions may need to update their code. To avoid subtle
breakages, the FunctionCallInfoData struct has been renamed to
FunctionCallInfoBaseData. Most code only references FunctionCallInfo,
so that shouldn't cause much collateral damage.

This change is also a prerequisite for more efficient expression JIT
compilation (by allocating the function call information on the stack,
allowing LLVM to optimize it away); previously the size of the call
information caused problems inside LLVM's optimizer.

Tom Lane ebfe20dc70 Allow UNLISTEN in hot-standby mode.
Since LISTEN is (still) disallowed, UNLISTEN must be a no-op in a
hot-standby session, and so there's no harm in allowing it.  This
change allows client code to not worry about whether it's connected
to a primary or standby server when performing session-state-reset
type activities.  (Note that DISCARD ALL, which includes UNLISTEN,
was already allowed, making it inconsistent to reject UNLISTEN.)

Andres Freund 578b229718 Remove WITH OIDS support, change oid catalog column visibility.
Previously tables declared WITH OIDS, including a significant fraction
of the catalog tables, stored the oid column not as a normal column,
but as part of the tuple header.

This special column was not shown by default, which was somewhat odd,
as it's often (consider e.g. pg_class.oid) one of the more important
parts of a row.  Neither pg_dump nor COPY included the contents of the
oid column by default.

The fact that the oid column was not an ordinary column necessitated a
significant amount of special case code to support oid columns. That
already was painful for the existing, but upcoming work aiming to make
table storage pluggable, would have required expanding and duplicating
that "specialness" significantly.

WITH OIDS has been deprecated since 2005 (commit ff02d0a05280e0).
Remove it.

Removing includes:
- CREATE TABLE and ALTER TABLE syntax for declaring the table to be
  WITH OIDS has been removed (WITH (oids[ = true]) will error out)
- pg_dump does not support dumping tables declared WITH OIDS and will
  issue a warning when dumping one (and ignore the oid column).
- restoring an pg_dump archive with pg_restore will warn when
  restoring a table with oid contents (and ignore the oid column)
- COPY will refuse to load binary dump that includes oids.
- pg_upgrade will error out when encountering tables declared WITH
  OIDS, they have to be altered to remove the oid column first.
- Functionality to access the oid of the last inserted row (like
  plpgsql's RESULT_OID, spi's SPI_lastoid, ...) has been removed.

The syntax for declaring a table WITHOUT OIDS (or WITH (oids = false)
for CREATE TABLE) is still supported. While that requires a bit of
support code, it seems unnecessary to break applications / dumps that
do not use oids, and are explicit about not using them.

The biggest user of WITH OID columns was postgres' catalog. This
commit changes all 'magic' oid columns to be columns that are normally
declared and stored. To reduce unnecessary query breakage all the
newly added columns are still named 'oid', even if a table's column
naming scheme would indicate 'reloid' or such.  This obviously
requires adapting a lot code, mostly replacing oid access via
HeapTupleGetOid() with access to the underlying Form_pg_*->oid column.

The bootstrap process now assigns oids for all oid columns in
genbki.pl that do not have an explicit value (starting at the largest
oid previously used), only oids assigned later by oids will be above
FirstBootstrapObjectId. As the oid column now is a normal column the
special bootstrap syntax for oids has been removed.

Oids are not automatically assigned during insertion anymore, all
backend code explicitly assigns oids with GetNewOidWithIndex(). For
the rare case that insertions into the catalog via SQL are called for
the new pg_nextoid() function can be used (which only works on catalog
tables).

The fact that oid columns on system tables are now normal columns
means that they will be included in the set of columns expanded
by * (i.e. SELECT * FROM pg_class will now include the table's oid,
previously it did not). It'd not technically be hard to hide oid
column by default, but that'd mean confusing behavior would either
have to be carried forward forever, or it'd cause breakage down the
line.

While it's not unlikely that further adjustments are needed, the
scope/invasiveness of the patch makes it worthwhile to get merge this
now. It's painful to maintain externally, too complicated to commit
after the code code freeze, and a dependency of a number of other
patches.

Andres Freund 1a0586de36 Introduce notion of different types of slots (without implementing them).
Upcoming work intends to allow pluggable ways to introduce new ways of
storing table data. Accessing those table access methods from the
executor requires TupleTableSlots to be carry tuples in the native
format of such storage methods; otherwise there'll be a significant
conversion overhead.

Different access methods will require different data to store tuples
efficiently (just like virtual, minimal, heap already require fields
in TupleTableSlot). To allow that without requiring additional pointer
indirections, we want to have different structs (embedding
TupleTableSlot) for different types of slots.  Thus different types of
slots are needed, which requires adapting creators of slots.

The slot that most efficiently can represent a type of tuple in an
executor node will often depend on the type of slot a child node
uses. Therefore we need to track the type of slot is returned by
nodes, so parent slots can create slots based on that.

Relatedly, JIT compilation of tuple deforming needs to know which type
of slot a certain expression refers to, so it can create an
appropriate deforming function for the type of tuple in the slot.

But not all nodes will only return one type of slot, e.g. an append
node will potentially return different types of slots for each of its
subplans.

Therefore add function that allows to query the type of a node's
result slot, and whether it'll always be the same type (whether it's
fixed). This can be queried using ExecGetResultSlotOps().

The scan, result, inner, outer type of slots are automatically
inferred from ExecInitScanTupleSlot(), ExecInitResultSlot(),
left/right subtrees respectively. If that's not correct for a node,
that can be overwritten using new fields in PlanState.

This commit does not introduce the actually abstracted implementation
of different kind of TupleTableSlots, that will be left for a followup
commit.  The different types of slots introduced will, for now, still
use the same backing implementation.

While this already partially invalidates the big comment in
tuptable.h, it seems to make more sense to update it later, when the
different TupleTableSlot implementations actually exist.

Tom Lane 2ddb9149d1 Server-side fix for delayed NOTIFY and SIGTERM processing.
Commit 4f85fde8e introduced some code that was meant to ensure that we'd
process cancel, die, sinval catchup, and notify interrupts while waiting
for client input.  But there was a flaw: it supposed that the process
latch would be set upon arrival at secure_read() if any such interrupt
was pending.  In reality, we might well have cleared the process latch
at some earlier point while those flags remained set -- particularly
notifyInterruptPending, which can't be handled as long as we're within
a transaction.

To fix the NOTIFY case, also attempt to process signals (except
ProcDiePending) before trying to read.

Also, if we see that ProcDiePending is set before we read, forcibly set the
process latch to ensure that we will handle that signal promptly if no data
is available.  I also made it set the process latch on the way out, in case
there is similar logic elsewhere.  (It remains true that we won't service
ProcDiePending here unless we need to wait for input.)

The code for handling ProcDiePending during a write needs those changes,
too.

Also be a little more careful about when to reset whereToSendOutput,
and improve related comments.

Back-patch to 9.5 where this code was added.  I'm not entirely convinced
that older branches don't have similar issues, but the complaint at hand
is just about the >= 9.5 code.

Thomas Munro 197e4af9d5 Refactor pid, random seed and start time initialization.
Background workers, including parallel workers, were generating
the same sequence of numbers in random().  This showed up as DSM
handle collisions when Parallel Hash created multiple segments,
but any code that calls random() in background workers could be
affected if it cares about different backends generating different
numbers.

Repair by making sure that all new processes initialize the seed
at the same time as they set MyProcPid and MyStartTime in a new
function InitProcessGlobals(), called by the postmaster, its
children and also standalone processes.  Also add a new high
resolution MyStartTimestamp as a potentially useful by-product,
and remove SessionStartTime from struct Port as it is now
redundant.

No back-patch for now, as the known consequences so far are just
a bunch of harmless shm_open(O_EXCL) collisions.

Andres Freund 93ca02e005 Mark constantly allocated dest receiver as const.
This allows the compiler / linker to mark affected pages as read-only.

Doing so requires casting constness away, as CreateDestReceiver()
returns both constant and non-constant dest receivers. That's fine
though, as any modification of the statically allocated receivers
would already have been a bug (and would now be caught on some
platforms).

Tom Lane d48da369ab Check for stack overrun in standard_ProcessUtility().
ProcessUtility can recurse, and indeed can be driven to infinite
recursion, so it ought to have a check_stack_depth() call.  This
covers the reported bug (portal trying to execute itself) and a bunch
of other cases that could perhaps arise somewhere.

Thomas Munro 212fab9926 Relax transactional restrictions on ALTER TYPE ... ADD VALUE (redux).
Originally committed as 15bc038f (plus some follow-ups), this was
reverted in 28e07270 due to a problem discovered in parallel
workers.  This new version corrects that problem by sending the
list of uncommitted enum values to parallel workers.

Here follows the original commit message describing the change:

To prevent possibly breaking indexes on enum columns, we must keep
uncommitted enum values from getting stored in tables, unless we
can be sure that any such column is new in the current transaction.

Formerly, we enforced this by disallowing ALTER TYPE ... ADD VALUE
from being executed at all in a transaction block, unless the target
enum type had been created in the current transaction.  This patch
removes that restriction, and instead insists that an uncommitted enum
value can't be referenced unless it belongs to an enum type created
in the same transaction as the value.  Per discussion, this should be
a bit less onerous.  It does require each function that could possibly
return a new enum value to SQL operations to check this restriction,
but there aren't so many of those that this seems unmaintainable.

Tom Lane d0cfc3d6a4 Add a debugging option to stress-test outfuncs.c and readfuncs.c.
In the normal course of operation, query trees will be serialized only if
they are stored as views or rules; and plan trees will be serialized only
if they get passed to parallel-query workers.  This leaves an awful lot of
opportunity for bugs/oversights to not get detected, as indeed we've just
been reminded of the hard way.

To improve matters, this patch adds a new compile option
WRITE_READ_PARSE_PLAN_TREES, which is modeled on the longstanding option
COPY_PARSE_PLAN_TREES; but instead of passing all parse and plan trees
through copyObject, it passes them through nodeToString + stringToNode.
Enabling this option in a buildfarm animal or two will catch problems
at least for cases that are exercised by the regression tests.

A small problem with this idea is that readfuncs.c historically has
discarded location fields, on the reasonable grounds that parse
locations in a retrieved view are not relevant to the current query.
But doing that in WRITE_READ_PARSE_PLAN_TREES breaks pg_stat_statements,
and it could cause problems for future improvements that might try to
report error locations at runtime.  To fix that, provide a variant
behavior in readfuncs.c that makes it restore location fields when
told to.

In passing, const-ify the string arguments of stringToNode and its
subsidiary functions, just because it annoyed me that they weren't
const already.

Heikki Linnakangas 8e19a82640 Don't run atexit callbacks in quickdie signal handlers.
exit() is not async-signal safe. Even if the libc implementation is, 3rd
party libraries might have installed unsafe atexit() callbacks. After
receiving SIGQUIT, we really just want to exit as quickly as possible, so
we don't really want to run the atexit() callbacks anyway.

The original report by Jimmy Yih was a self-deadlock in startup_die().
However, this patch doesn't address that scenario; the signal handling
while waiting for the startup packet is more complicated. But at least this
alleviates similar problems in the SIGQUIT handlers, like that reported
by Asim R P later in the same thread.

Backpatch to 9.3 (all supported versions).

Alvaro Herrera 4eaa537275 Don't allow partitioned index on foreign-table partitions
Creating indexes on foreign tables is already forbidden, but local
partitioned indexes (commit 8b08f7d482) forgot to check for them.  Add
a preliminary check to prevent wasting time.

Another school of thought says to allow the index to be created if it's
not a unique index; but it's possible to do better in the future (enable
indexing of foreign tables, somehow), so we avoid painting ourselves in
a corner by rejecting all cases, to avoid future grief (a.k.a. backward
incompatible changes).

Peter Eisentraut 30c66e77be Fix SPI error cleanup and memory leak
Since the SPI stack has been moved from TopTransactionContext to
TopMemoryContext, setting _SPI_stack to NULL in AtEOXact_SPI() leaks
memory.  In fact, we don't need to do that anymore: We just leave the
allocated stack around for the next SPI use.

Also, refactor the SPI cleanup so that it is run both at transaction end
and when returning to the main loop on an exception.  The latter is
necessary when a procedure calls a COMMIT or ROLLBACK command that
itself causes an error.

Tom Lane 41c912cad1 Clean up warnings from -Wimplicit-fallthrough.
Recent gcc can warn about switch-case fall throughs that are not
explicitly labeled as intentional.  This seems like a good thing,
so clean up the warnings exposed thereby by labeling all such
cases with comments that gcc will recognize.

In files that already had one or more suitable comments, I generally
matched the existing style of those.  Otherwise I went with
/* FALLTHROUGH */, which is one of the spellings approved at the
more-restrictive-than-default level -Wimplicit-fallthrough=4.
(At the default level you can also spell it /* FALL ?THRU */,
and it's not picky about case.  What you can't do is include
additional text in the same comment, so some existing comments
containing versions of this aren't good enough.)

Testing with gcc 8.0.1 (Fedora 28's current version), I found that
I also had to put explicit "break"s after elog(ERROR) or ereport(ERROR);
apparently, for this purpose gcc doesn't recognize that those don't
return.  That seems like possibly a gcc bug, but it's fine because
in most places we did that anyway; so this amounts to a visit from the
style police.

Alvaro Herrera da6f3e45dd Reorganize partitioning code
There's been a massive addition of partitioning code in PostgreSQL 11,
with little oversight on its placement, resulting in a
catalog/partition.c with poorly defined boundaries and responsibilities.
This commit tries to set a couple of distinct modules to separate things
a little bit.  There are no code changes here, only code movement.

There are three new files:
  src/backend/utils/cache/partcache.c
  src/include/partitioning/partdefs.h
  src/include/utils/partcache.h

The previous arrangement of #including catalog/partition.h almost
everywhere is no more.

Simon Riggs 08ea7a2291 Revert MERGE patch
This reverts commits d204ef6377,
83454e3c2b and a few more commits thereafter
(complete list at the end) related to MERGE feature.

While the feature was fully functional, with sufficient test coverage and
necessary documentation, it was felt that some parts of the executor and
parse-analyzer can use a different design and it wasn't possible to do that in
the available time. So it was decided to revert the patch for PG11 and retry
again in the future.

Thanks again to all reviewers and bug reporters.

Tom Lane cefa387153 Merge catalog/pg_foo_fn.h headers back into pg_foo.h headers.
Traditionally, include/catalog/pg_foo.h contains extern declarations
for functions in backend/catalog/pg_foo.c, in addition to its function
as the authoritative definition of the pg_foo catalog's rowtype.
In some cases, we'd been forced to split out those extern declarations
into separate pg_foo_fn.h headers so that the catalog definitions
could be #include'd by frontend code.  That problem is gone as of
commit 9c0a0de4c, so let's undo the splits to make things less
confusing.

Stephen Frost c37b3d08ca Allow group access on PGDATA
Allow the cluster to be optionally init'd with read access for the
group.

This means a relatively non-privileged user can perform a backup of the
cluster without requiring write privileges, which enhances security.

The mode of PGDATA is used to determine whether group permissions are
enabled for directory and file creates.  This method was chosen as it's
simple and works well for the various utilities that write into PGDATA.

Changing the mode of PGDATA manually will not automatically change the
mode of all the files contained therein.  If the user would like to
enable group access on an existing cluster then changing the mode of all
the existing files will be required.  Note that pg_upgrade will
automatically change the mode of all migrated files if the new cluster
is init'd with the -g option.

Tests are included for the backend and all the utilities which operate
on the PG data directory to ensure that the correct mode is set based on
the data directory permissions.

Simon Riggs d204ef6377 MERGE SQL Command following SQL:2016
MERGE performs actions that modify rows in the target table
using a source table or query. MERGE provides a single SQL
statement that can conditionally INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE rows
a task that would other require multiple PL statements.
e.g.

WHEN MATCHED AND t.balance > s.delta THEN

MERGE works with regular and partitioned tables, including
column and row security enforcement, as well as support for
row, statement and transition triggers.

MERGE is optimized for OLTP and is parameterizable, though
also useful for large scale ETL/ELT. MERGE is not intended
to be used in preference to existing single SQL commands
for INSERT, UPDATE or DELETE since there is some overhead.
MERGE can be used statically from PL/pgSQL.

MERGE does not yet support inheritance, write rules,
RETURNING clauses, updatable views or foreign tables.
MERGE follows SQL Standard per the most recent SQL:2016.

Includes full tests and documentation, including full
isolation tests to demonstrate the concurrent behavior.

This version written from scratch in 2017 by Simon Riggs,
using docs and tests originally written in 2009. Later work
from Pavan Deolasee has been both complex and deep, leaving
the lead author credit now in his hands.
Extensive discussion of concurrency from Peter Geoghegan,
with thanks for the time and effort contributed.

Andres Freund d87510a524 Combine options for RangeVarGetRelidExtended() into a flags argument.
A followup patch will add a SKIP_LOCKED option. To avoid introducing
evermore arguments, breaking existing callers each time, introduce a
flags argument. This'll no doubt break a few external users...

Also change the MISSING_OK behaviour so a DEBUG1 debug message is
emitted when a relation is not found.

Peter Eisentraut 056a5a3f63 Allow committing inside cursor loop
Previously, committing or aborting inside a cursor loop was prohibited
because that would close and remove the cursor.  To allow that,
automatically convert such cursors to holdable cursors so they survive
commits or rollbacks.  Portals now have a new state "auto-held", which
means they have been converted automatically from pinned.  An auto-held
portal is kept on transaction commit or rollback, but is still removed
when returning to the main loop on error.

This supports all languages that have cursor loop constructs: PL/pgSQL,
PL/Python, PL/Perl.

Peter Eisentraut d92bc83c48 PL/pgSQL: Nested CALL with transactions
So far, a nested CALL or DO in PL/pgSQL would not establish a context
where transaction control statements were allowed.  This fixes that by
handling CALL and DO specially in PL/pgSQL, passing the atomic/nonatomic
execution context through and doing the required management around
transaction boundaries.

Alvaro Herrera 86f575948c Allow FOR EACH ROW triggers on partitioned tables
Previously, FOR EACH ROW triggers were not allowed in partitioned
tables.  Now we allow AFTER triggers on them, and on trigger creation we
cascade to create an identical trigger in each partition.  We also clone
the triggers to each partition that is created or attached later.

This means that deferred unique keys are allowed on partitioned tables,
too.

Andres Freund 432bb9e04d Basic JIT provider and error handling infrastructure.
This commit introduces:

1) JIT provider abstraction, which allows JIT functionality to be
   implemented in separate shared libraries. That's desirable because
   it allows to install JIT support as a separate package, and because
   it allows experimentation with different forms of JITing.
2) JITContexts which can be, using functions introduced in follow up
   commits, used to emit JITed functions, and have them be cleaned up
   on error.
3) The outline of a LLVM JIT provider, which will be fleshed out in
   subsequent commits.

Documentation for GUCs added, and for JIT in general, will be added in
later commits.

Peter Eisentraut 04700b685f Rename TransactionChain functions
We call this thing a "transaction block" everywhere except in a few
functions, where it is mysteriously called a "transaction chain".  In
the SQL standard, a transaction chain is something different.  So rename
these functions to match the common terminology.

Peter Eisentraut 33803f67f1 Support INOUT arguments in procedures
In a top-level CALL, the values of INOUT arguments will be returned as a
result row.  In PL/pgSQL, the values are assigned back to the input
arguments.  In other languages, the same convention as for return a
record from a function is used.  That does not require any code changes
in the PL implementations.

To support parameters in CALL, move the parse analysis of the procedure
and arguments into the global transformation phase, so that the parser
hooks can be applied.  And then at execution time pass the parameters

Alvaro Herrera eb7ed3f306 Allow UNIQUE indexes on partitioned tables
If we restrict unique constraints on partitioned tables so that they
must always include the partition key, then our standard approach to
unique indexes already works --- each unique key is forced to exist
within a single partition, so enforcing the unique restriction in each
index individually is enough to have it enforced globally.  Therefore we
can implement unique indexes on partitions by simply removing a few
restrictions (and adding others.)

Robert Haas be42015fcc Clear stmt_timeout_active if we disable_all_timeouts.
Otherwise, we can end up with the flag set when the timeout is
actually disabled, leading to misbehavior.  Commit
f8e5f156b3 introduced this bug.

Peter Eisentraut 8561e4840c Transaction control in PL procedures
In each of the supplied procedural languages (PL/pgSQL, PL/Perl,
PL/Python, PL/Tcl), add language-specific commit and rollback
functions/commands to control transactions in procedures in that
language.  Add similar underlying functions to SPI.  Some additional
cleanup so that transaction commit or abort doesn't blow away data
structures still used by the procedure call.  Add execution context
tracking to CALL and DO statements so that transaction control commands
can only be issued in top-level procedure and block calls, not function
calls or other procedure or block calls.

- SPI

Add a new function SPI_connect_ext() that is like SPI_connect() but
allows passing option flags.  The only option flag right now is
SPI_OPT_NONATOMIC.  A nonatomic SPI connection can execute transaction
control commands, otherwise it's not allowed.  This is meant to be
passed down from CALL and DO statements which themselves know in which
context they are called.  A nonatomic SPI connection uses different
memory management.  A normal SPI connection allocates its memory in
TopTransactionContext.  For nonatomic connections we use PortalContext
instead.  As the comment in SPI_connect_ext() (previously SPI_connect())
indicates, one could potentially use PortalContext in all cases, but it
seems safest to leave the existing uses alone, because this stuff is
complicated enough already.

SPI also gets new functions SPI_start_transaction(), SPI_commit(), and
SPI_rollback(), which can be used by PLs to implement their transaction
control logic.

- portalmem.c

Some adjustments were made in the code that cleans up portals at
transaction abort.  The portal code could already handle a command
*committing* a transaction and continuing (e.g., VACUUM), but it was not
quite prepared for a command *aborting* a transaction and continuing.

In AtAbort_Portals(), remove the code that marks an active portal as
failed.  As the comment there already predicted, this doesn't work if
the running command wants to keep running after transaction abort.  And
it's actually not necessary, because pquery.c is careful to run all
portal code in a PG_TRY block and explicitly runs MarkPortalFailed() if
there is an exception.  So the code in AtAbort_Portals() is never used
anyway.

In AtAbort_Portals() and AtCleanup_Portals(), we need to be careful not
to clean up active portals too much.  This mirrors similar code in
PreCommit_Portals().

- PL/Perl

Gets new functions spi_commit() and spi_rollback()

- PL/pgSQL

Gets new commands COMMIT and ROLLBACK.

Update the PL/SQL porting example in the documentation to reflect that
transactions are now possible in procedures.

- PL/Python

Gets new functions plpy.commit and plpy.rollback.

- PL/Tcl

Gets new commands commit and rollback.

Peter Eisentraut 8b9e9644dc Replace AclObjectKind with ObjectType
AclObjectKind was basically just another enumeration for object types,
and we already have a preferred one for that.  It's only used in
aclcheck_error.  By using ObjectType instead, we can also give some more
precise error messages, for example "index" instead of "relation".

Peter Eisentraut 2c6f37ed62 Replace GrantObjectType with ObjectType
There used to be a lot of different *Type and *Kind symbol groups to
address objects within different commands, most of which have been
replaced by ObjectType, starting with
b256f24264.  But this conversion was never
done for the ACL commands until now.

This change ends up being just a plain replacement of the types and
symbols, without any code restructuring needed, except deleting some now
redundant code.

Alvaro Herrera 8b08f7d482 Local partitioned indexes
When CREATE INDEX is run on a partitioned table, create catalog entries
for an index on the partitioned table (which is just a placeholder since
the table proper has no data of its own), and recurse to create actual
indexes on the existing partitions; create them in future partitions
also.

As a convenience gadget, if the new index definition matches some
existing index in partitions, these are picked up and used instead of
creating new ones.  Whichever way these indexes come about, they become
attached to the index on the parent table and are dropped alongside it,
and cannot be dropped on isolation unless they are detached first.

To support pg_dump'ing these indexes, add commands
    CREATE INDEX ON ONLY <table>
(which creates the index on the parent partitioned table, without
recursing) and
    ALTER INDEX ATTACH PARTITION
(which is used after the indexes have been created individually on each
partition, to attach them to the parent index).  These reconstruct prior
database state exactly.

Peter Eisentraut 0f7c49e855 Update portal-related memory context names and API
Rename PortalMemory to TopPortalContext, to avoid confusion with
PortalContext and align naming with similar top-level memory contexts.

Rename PortalData's "heap" field to portalContext.  The "heap" naming
seems quite antiquated and confusing.  Also get rid of the
PortalGetHeapMemory() macro and access the field directly, which we do
for other portal fields, so this abstraction doesn't buy anything.

Tom Lane 6719b238e8 Rearrange execution of PARAM_EXTERN Params for plpgsql's benefit.
This patch does three interrelated things:

* Create a new expression execution step type EEOP_PARAM_CALLBACK
and add the infrastructure needed for add-on modules to generate that.
As discussed, the best control mechanism for that seems to be to add
another hook function to ParamListInfo, which will be called by
ExecInitExpr if it's supplied and a PARAM_EXTERN Param is found.
For stand-alone expressions, we add a new entry point to allow the
ParamListInfo to be specified directly, since it can't be retrieved
from the parent plan node's EState.

* Redesign the API for the ParamListInfo paramFetch hook so that the
ParamExternData array can be entirely virtual.  This also lets us get rid
of ParamListInfo.paramMask, instead leaving it to the paramFetch hook to
decide which param IDs should be accessible or not.  plpgsql_param_fetch
was already doing the identical masking check, so having callers do it too
seemed redundant.  While I was at it, I added a "speculative" flag to
paramFetch that the planner can specify as TRUE to avoid unwanted failures.
This solves an ancient problem for plpgsql that it couldn't provide values
of non-DTYPE_VAR variables to the planner for fear of triggering premature
"record not assigned yet" or "field not found" errors during planning.

* Rework plpgsql to get rid of the need for "unshared" parameter lists,
by dint of turning the single ParamListInfo per estate into a nearly
read-only data structure that doesn't instantiate any per-variable data.
Instead, the paramFetch hook controls access to per-variable data and can
make the right decisions on the fly, replacing the cases that we used to
need multiple ParamListInfos for.  This might perhaps have been a
performance loss on its own, but by using a paramCompile hook we can
bypass plpgsql_param_fetch entirely during normal query execution.
(It's now only called when, eg, we copy the ParamListInfo into a cursor
portal.  copyParamList() or SerializeParamList() effectively instantiate
the virtual parameter array as a simple physical array without a
paramFetch hook, which is what we want in those cases.)  This allows
reverting most of commit 6c82d8d1f, though I kept the cosmetic
code-consolidation aspects of that (eg the assign_simple_var function).

Performance testing shows this to be at worst a break-even change,
and it can provide wins ranging up to 20% in test cases involving
accesses to fields of "record" variables.  The fact that values of
such variables can now be exposed to the planner might produce wins
in some situations, too, but I've not pursued that angle.

In passing, remove the "parent" pointer from the arguments to
ExecInitExprRec and related functions, instead storing that pointer in a
transient field in ExprState.  The ParamListInfo pointer for a stand-alone
expression is handled the same way; we'd otherwise have had to add
yet another recursively-passed-down argument in expression compilation.

Peter Eisentraut e4128ee767 SQL procedures
This adds a new object type "procedure" that is similar to a function
but does not have a return type and is invoked by the new CALL statement
instead of SELECT or similar.  This implementation is aligned with the
SQL standard and compatible with or similar to other SQL implementations.

This commit adds new commands CALL, CREATE/ALTER/DROP PROCEDURE, as well
as ALTER/DROP ROUTINE that can refer to either a function or a
procedure (or an aggregate function, as an extension to SQL).  There is
also support for procedures in various utility commands such as COMMENT
and GRANT, as well as support in pg_dump and psql.  Support for defining
procedures is available in all the languages supplied by the core
distribution.

While this commit is mainly syntax sugar around existing functionality,
future features will rely on having procedures as a separate object
type.

Andrew Dunstan 98d54bb779 Back out the session_start and session_end hooks feature.
It's become apparent during testing that there are problems with at
least the testing regime. I don't think we should have it without a
working test regime, and the difficulties might indicate implementation
problems anyway, so I'm backing out the whole thing until that's sorted
out.

Peter Eisentraut 2eb4a831e5 Change TRUE/FALSE to true/false
The lower case spellings are C and C++ standard and are used in most
parts of the PostgreSQL sources.  The upper case spellings are only used
in some files/modules.  So standardize on the standard spellings.

The APIs for ICU, Perl, and Windows define their own TRUE and FALSE, so
those are left as is when using those APIs.

In code comments, we use the lower-case spelling for the C concepts and
keep the upper-case spelling for the SQL concepts.

Andres Freund 4c119fbcd4 Improve performance of SendRowDescriptionMessage.
There's three categories of changes leading to better performance:
- Splitting the per-attribute part of SendRowDescriptionMessage into a
  v2 and a v3 version allows avoiding branches for every attribute.
- Preallocating the size of the buffer to be big enough for all
  attributes and then using pq_write* avoids unnecessary buffer
  size checks & resizing.
- Reusing a persistently allocated StringInfo for all
  SendRowDescriptionMessage() invocations avoids repeated allocations
  & reallocations.

Andres Freund f676616651 Prevent idle in transaction session timeout from sometimes being ignored.
The previous coding in ProcessInterrupts() could lead to
idle_in_transaction_session_timeout being ignored, when
statement_timeout occurred earlier.

The problem was that ProcessInterrupts() would return before
processing the transaction timeout if QueryCancelPending was set while
QueryCancelHoldoffCount != 0 - which is the case when reading new
commands from the client. Ergo when the idle transaction timeout would
hit.

Fix that by removing the early return. Alternatively the transaction
timeout code could have been moved up, but that early return seems
like an issue that could hit other cases too.

Andres Freund 0ba99c84e8 Replace most usages of ntoh[ls] and hton[sl] with pg_bswap.h.
All postgres internal usages are replaced, it's just libpq example
usages that haven't been converted. External users of libpq can't
generally rely on including postgres internal headers.

Note that this includes replacing open-coded byte swapping of 64bit
integers (using two 32 bit swaps) with a single 64bit swap.

Where it looked applicable, I have removed netinet/in.h and
arpa/inet.h usage, which previously provided the relevant
functionality. It's perfectly possible that I missed other reasons for
including those, the buildfarm will tell.

Tom Lane 28e0727076 Revert to 9.6 treatment of ALTER TYPE enumtype ADD VALUE.
This reverts commit 15bc038f9, along with the followon commits 1635e80d3
and 984c92074 that tried to clean up the problems exposed by bug #14825.
The result was incomplete because it failed to address parallel-query
requirements.  With 10.0 release so close upon us, now does not seem like
the time to be adding more code to fix that.  I hope we can un-revert this
code and add the missing parallel query support during the v11 cycle.

Andres Freund f8e5f156b3 Rearm statement_timeout after each executed query.
Previously statement_timeout, in the extended protocol, affected all
messages till a Sync message.  For clients that pipeline/batch query
execution that's problematic.

Instead disable timeout after each Execute message, and enable, if
necessary, the timer in start_xact_command(). As that's done only for
Execute and not Parse / Bind, pipelining the latter two could still
cause undesirable timeouts. But a survey of protocol implementations
shows that all drivers issue Sync messages when preparing, and adding
timeout rearming to both is fairly expensive for the common parse /
bind / execute sequence.

Andres Freund ec9e05b3c3 Fix crash restart bug introduced in 8356753c21.
The bug was caused by not re-reading the control file during crash
recovery restarts, which lead to an attempt to pfree() shared memory
contents. The fix is to re-read the control file, which seems good
anyway.

It's unclear as of this moment, whether we want to keep the
refactoring introduced in the commit referenced above, or come up with
an alternative approach. But fixing the bug in the mean time seems
like a good idea regardless.

A followup commit will introduce regression test coverage for crash
restarts.

Andres Freund 8356753c21 Perform only one ReadControlFile() during startup.
Previously we read the control file in multiple places. But soon the
segment size will be configurable and stored in the control file, and
that needs to be available earlier than it currently is needed.

Instead of adding yet another place where it's read, refactor things
so there's a single processing of the control file during startup (in
EXEC_BACKEND that's every individual backend's startup).

Peter Eisentraut 1356f78ea9 Reduce excessive dereferencing of function pointers
It is equivalent in ANSI C to write (*funcptr) () and funcptr().  These
two styles have been applied inconsistently.  After discussion, we'll
use the more verbose style for plain function pointer variables, to make
it clear that it's a variable, and the shorter style when the function
pointer is in a struct (s.func() or s->func()), because then it's clear
that it's not a plain function name, and otherwise the excessive
punctuation makes some of those invocations hard to read.

Tom Lane 6eb52da394 Fix handling of savepoint commands within multi-statement Query strings.
Issuing a savepoint-related command in a Query message that contains
multiple SQL statements led to a FATAL exit with a complaint about
"unexpected state STARTED".  This is a shortcoming of commit 4f896dac1,
which attempted to prevent such misbehaviors in multi-statement strings;
its quick hack of marking the individual statements as "not top-level"
does the wrong thing in this case, and isn't a very accurate description
of the situation anyway.

To fix, let's introduce into xact.c an explicit model of what happens for
multi-statement Query strings.  This is an "implicit transaction block
in progress" state, which for many purposes works like the normal
TBLOCK_INPROGRESS state --- in particular, IsTransactionBlock returns true,
causing the desired result that PreventTransactionChain will throw error.
But in case of error abort it works like TBLOCK_STARTED, allowing the
transaction to be cancelled without need for an explicit ROLLBACK command.

Commit 4f896dac1 is reverted in toto, so that we go back to treating the
individual statements as "top level".  We could have left it as-is, but
this allows sharpening the error message for PreventTransactionChain
calls inside functions.

Except for getting a normal error instead of a FATAL exit for savepoint
commands, this patch should result in no user-visible behavioral change
(other than that one error message rewording).  There are some things
we might want to do in the line of changing the appearance or wording of
error and warning messages around this behavior, which would be much
simpler to do now that it's an explicitly modeled state.  But I haven't
done them here.

Although this fixes a long-standing bug, no backpatch.  The consequences
of the bug don't seem severe enough to justify the risk that this commit
itself creates some new issue.

Patch by me, but it owes something to previous investigation by
Takayuki Tsunakawa, who also reported the bug in the first place.

Tom Lane 382ceffdf7 Phase 3 of pgindent updates.
Don't move parenthesized lines to the left, even if that means they
flow past the right margin.

By default, BSD indent lines up statement continuation lines that are
within parentheses so that they start just to the right of the preceding
left parenthesis.  However, traditionally, if that resulted in the
continuation line extending to the right of the desired right margin,
then indent would push it left just far enough to not overrun the margin,
if it could do so without making the continuation line start to the left of
the current statement indent.  That makes for a weird mix of indentations
unless one has been completely rigid about never violating the 80-column
limit.

This behavior has been pretty universally panned by Postgres developers.
Hence, disable it with indent's new -lpl switch, so that parenthesized
lines are always lined up with the preceding left paren.

This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent

Tom Lane c7b8998ebb Phase 2 of pgindent updates.
Change pg_bsd_indent to follow upstream rules for placement of comments
to the right of code, and remove pgindent hack that caused comments
following #endif to not obey the general rule.

Commit e3860ffa4d wasn't actually using
the published version of pg_bsd_indent, but a hacked-up version that
tried to minimize the amount of movement of comments to the right of
code.  The situation of interest is where such a comment has to be
moved to the right of its default placement at column 33 because there's
code there.  BSD indent has always moved right in units of tab stops
in such cases --- but in the previous incarnation, indent was working
in 8-space tab stops, while now it knows we use 4-space tabs.  So the
net result is that in about half the cases, such comments are placed
one tab stop left of before.  This is better all around: it leaves
more room on the line for comment text, and it means that in such
cases the comment uniformly starts at the next 4-space tab stop after
the code, rather than sometimes one and sometimes two tabs after.

Also, ensure that comments following #endif are indented the same
as comments following other preprocessor commands such as #else.
That inconsistency turns out to have been self-inflicted damage
from a poorly-thought-through post-indent "fixup" in pgindent.

This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent
changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects.

Tom Lane e3860ffa4d Initial pgindent run with pg_bsd_indent version 2.0.
The new indent version includes numerous fixes thanks to Piotr Stefaniak.
The main changes visible in this commit are:

* Nicer formatting of function-pointer declarations.
* No longer unexpectedly removes spaces in expressions using casts,
  sizeof, or offsetof.
* No longer wants to add a space in "struct structname *varname", as
  well as some similar cases for const- or volatile-qualified pointers.
* Declarations using PG_USED_FOR_ASSERTS_ONLY are formatted more nicely.
* Fixes bug where comments following declarations were sometimes placed
  with no space separating them from the code.
* Fixes some odd decisions for comments following case labels.
* Fixes some cases where comments following code were indented to less
  than the expected column 33.

On the less good side, it now tends to put more whitespace around typedef
names that are not listed in typedefs.list.  This might encourage us to
put more effort into typedef name collection; it's not really a bug in
indent itself.

There are more changes coming after this round, having to do with comment
indentation and alignment of lines appearing within parentheses.  I wanted
to limit the size of the diffs to something that could be reviewed without
one's eyes completely glazing over, so it seemed better to split up the
changes as much as practical.

Andres Freund 2c48f5db64 Use standard interrupt handling in logical replication launcher.
Previously the exit handling was only able to exit from within the
main loop, and not from within the backend code it calls.  Fix that by
using the standard die() SIGTERM handler, and adding the necessary
CHECK_FOR_INTERRUPTS() call.

This requires adding yet another process-type-specific branch to
ProcessInterrupts(), which hints that we probably should generalize
that handling.  But that's work for another day.

Andres Freund 6e1dd2773e Unify SIGHUP handling between normal and walsender backends.
Because walsender and normal backends share the same main loop it's
problematic to have two different flag variables, set in signal
handlers, indicating a pending configuration reload.  Only certain
walsender commands reach code paths checking for the
variable (START_[LOGICAL_]REPLICATION, CREATE_REPLICATION_SLOT
... LOGICAL, notably not base backups).

This is a bug present since the introduction of walsender, but has
gotten worse in releases since then which allow walsender to do more.

A later patch, not slated for v10, will similarly unify SIGHUP
handling in other types of processes as well.

Tom Lane 0d18852666 Disallow CREATE INDEX if table is already in use in current session.
If we allow this, whatever outer command has the table open will not know
about the new index and may fail to update it as needed, as shown in a
report from Laurenz Albe.  We already had such a prohibition in place for
ALTER TABLE, but the CREATE INDEX syntax missed the check.

Fixing it requires an API change for DefineIndex(), which conceivably
would break third-party extensions if we were to back-patch it.  Given
how long this problem has existed without being noticed, fixing it in
the back branches doesn't seem worth that risk.

Peter Eisentraut 9fcf670c2e Fix signal handling in logical replication workers
The logical replication worker processes now use the normal die()
handler for SIGTERM and CHECK_FOR_INTERRUPTS() instead of custom code.
One problem before was that the apply worker would not exit promptly
when a subscription was dropped, which could lead to deadlocks.

Tom Lane 8f0530f580 Improve castNode notation by introducing list-extraction-specific variants.
This extends the castNode() notation introduced by commit 5bcab1114 to
provide, in one step, extraction of a list cell's pointer and coercion to
a concrete node type.  For example, "lfirst_node(Foo, lc)" is the same
as "castNode(Foo, lfirst(lc))".  Almost half of the uses of castNode
that have appeared so far include a list extraction call, so this is
pretty widely useful, and it saves a few more keystrokes compared to the
old way.

As with the previous patch, back-patch the addition of these macros to
pg_list.h, so that the notation will be available when back-patching.

Heikki Linnakangas fd01983594 Remove dead code and fix comments in fast-path function handling.
HandleFunctionRequest() is no longer responsible for reading the protocol
message from the client, since commit 2b3a8b20c2. Fix the outdated
comments.

HandleFunctionRequest() now always returns 0, because the code that used
to return EOF was moved in 2b3a8b20c2. Therefore, the caller no longer
needs to check the return value.

Reported by Andres Freund. Backpatch to all supported versions, even though
this doesn't have any user-visible effect, to make backporting future
patches in this area easier.

Kevin Grittner 41bd155dd6 Fix two undocumented parameters to functions from ENR patch.
On ProcessUtility document the parameter, to match others.

On CreateCachedPlan drop the queryEnv parameter.  It was not
referenced within the function, and had been added on the
assumption that with some unknown future usage of QueryEnvironment
it might be useful to do something there.  We have avoided other
"just in case" implementation of unused paramters, so drop it here.

Kevin Grittner 18ce3a4ab2 Add infrastructure to support EphemeralNamedRelation references.
A QueryEnvironment concept is added, which allows new types of
objects to be passed into queries from parsing on through
execution.  At this point, the only thing implemented is a
collection of EphemeralNamedRelation objects -- relations which
can be referenced by name in queries, but do not exist in the
catalogs.  The only type of ENR implemented is NamedTuplestore, but
provision is made to add more types fairly easily.

An ENR can carry its own TupleDesc or reference a relation in the
catalogs by relid.

Although these features can be used without SPI, convenience
functions are added to SPI so that ENRs can easily be used by code
run through SPI.

The initial use of all this is going to be transition tables in
AFTER triggers, but that will be added to each PL as a separate
commit.

An incidental effect of this patch is to produce a more informative
error message if an attempt is made to modify the contents of a CTE
from a referencing DML statement.  No tests previously covered that
possibility, so one is added.

Peter Eisentraut 4cb824699e Cast result of copyObject() to correct type
copyObject() is declared to return void *, which allows easily assigning
the result independent of the input, but it loses all type checking.

If the compiler supports typeof or something similar, cast the result to
the input type.  This creates a greater amount of type safety.  In some
cases, where the result is assigned to a generic type such as Node * or
Expr *, new casts are now necessary, but in general casts are now
unnecessary in the normal case and indicate that something unusual is
happening.

Alvaro Herrera 7b504eb282 Implement multivariate n-distinct coefficients
Add support for explicitly declared statistic objects (CREATE
STATISTICS), allowing collection of statistics on more complex
combinations that individual table columns.  Companion commands DROP
STATISTICS and ALTER STATISTICS ... OWNER TO / SET SCHEMA / RENAME are
added too.  All this DDL has been designed so that more statistic types
can be added later on, such as multivariate most-common-values and
multivariate histograms between columns of a single table, leaving room
for permitting columns on multiple tables, too, as well as expressions.

This commit only adds support for collection of n-distinct coefficient
on user-specified sets of columns in a single table.  This is useful to
estimate number of distinct groups in GROUP BY and DISTINCT clauses;
estimation errors there can cause over-allocation of memory in hashed
aggregates, for instance, so it's a worthwhile problem to solve.  A new
special pseudo-type pg_ndistinct is used.

(num-distinct estimation was deemed sufficiently useful by itself that
this is worthwhile even if no further statistic types are added
immediately; so much so that another version of essentially the same
functionality was submitted by Kyotaro Horiguchi:

Peter Eisentraut eccfef81e1 ICU support
Add a column collprovider to pg_collation that determines which library
provides the collation data.  The existing choices are default and libc,
and this adds an icu choice, which uses the ICU4C library.

The pg_locale_t type is changed to a union that contains the
provider-specific locale handles.  Users of locale information are
changed to look into that struct for the appropriate handle to use.

Also add a collversion column that records the version of the collation
when it is created, and check at run time whether it is still the same.
This detects potentially incompatible library upgrades that can corrupt
indexes and other structures.  This is currently only supported by
ICU-provided collations.

initdb initializes the default collation set as before from the `locale
-a` output but also adds all available ICU locales with a "-x-icu"
appended.

Currently, ICU-provided collations can only be explicitly named
collations.  The global database locales are still always libc-provided.

ICU support is enabled by configure --with-icu.

Robert Haas 691b8d5928 Allow for parallel execution whenever ExecutorRun() is done only once.
Previously, it was unsafe to execute a plan in parallel if
ExecutorRun() might be called with a non-zero row count.  However,
it's quite easy to fix things up so that we can support that case,
provided that it is known that we will never call ExecutorRun() a
second time for the same QueryDesc.  Add infrastructure to signal
this, and cross-checks to make sure that a caller who claims this is
true doesn't later reneg.

While that pattern never happens with queries received directly from a
client -- there's no way to know whether multiple Execute messages
will be sent unless the first one requests all the rows -- it's pretty
common for queries originating from procedural languages, which often
limit the result to a single tuple or to a user-specified number of
tuples.

This commit doesn't actually enable parallelism in any additional
cases, because currently none of the places that would be able to
benefit from this infrastructure pass CURSOR_OPT_PARALLEL_OK in the
first place, but it makes it much more palatable to pass
CURSOR_OPT_PARALLEL_OK in places where we currently don't, because it
eliminates some cases where we'd end up having to run the parallel
plan serially.

Rafia Sabih based on feedback from Dilip Kumar and myself.

Peter Eisentraut 7c4f52409a Logical replication support for initial data copy
Add functionality for a new subscription to copy the initial data in the
tables and then sync with the ongoing apply process.

For the copying, add a new internal COPY option to have the COPY source
data provided by a callback function.  The initial data copy works on
the subscriber by receiving COPY data from the publisher and then
providing it locally into a COPY that writes to the destination table.

A WAL receiver can now execute full SQL commands.  This is used here to
obtain information about tables and publications.

Several new options were added to CREATE and ALTER SUBSCRIPTION to
control whether and when initial table syncing happens.

Change pg_dump option --no-create-subscription-slots to
--no-subscription-connect and use the new CREATE SUBSCRIPTION
... NOCONNECT option for that.

Tom Lane c29aff959d Consistently declare timestamp variables as TimestampTz.
Twiddle the replication-related code so that its timestamp variables
are declared TimestampTz, rather than the uninformative "int64" that
was previously used for meant-to-be-always-integer timestamps.
This resolves the int64-vs-TimestampTz declaration inconsistencies
introduced by commit 7c030783a, though in the opposite direction to
what was originally suggested.

This required including datatype/timestamp.h in a couple more places
than before.  I decided it would be a good idea to slim down that
header by not having it pull in <float.h> etc, as those headers are
no longer at all relevant to its purpose.  Unsurprisingly, a small number
of .c files turn out to have been depending on those inclusions, so add
them back in the .c files as needed.

Tom Lane 7afd56c3c6 Use castNode() in a bunch of statement-list-related code.
When I wrote commit ab1f0c822, I really missed the castNode() macro that
Peter E. had proposed shortly before.  This back-fills the uses I would
have put it to.  It's probably not all that significant, but there are
more assertions here than there were before, and conceivably they will
help catch any bugs associated with those representation changes.

I left behind a number of usages like "(Query *) copyObject(query_var)".
Those could have been converted as well, but Peter has proposed another
notational improvement that would handle copyObject cases automatically,
so I let that be for now.

Andres Freund 5bcab11142 Add castNode(type, ptr) for safe casting between NodeTag based types.
The new function allows to cast from one NodeTag based type to
another, while asserting that the conversion is valid.  This replaces
the common pattern of doing a cast and a Assert(IsA(ptr, type))
close-by.

As this seems likely to be used pervasively, we decided to backpatch
this change the addition of this macro. Otherwise backpatched fixes
are more likely not to work on back-branches.

On branches before 9.6, where we do not yet rely on inline functions
being available, the type assertion is only performed if PG_USE_INLINE
support is detected. The cast obviously is performed regardless.

For the benefit of verifying the macro compiles in the back-branches,
this commit contains a single use of the new macro. On master, a
somewhat larger conversion will be committed separately.

Robert Haas a84069d935 Add a new DestReceiver for printing tuples without catalog access.
If you create a DestReciver of type DestRemote and try to use it from
a replication connection that is not bound to a specific daabase, or
any other hypothetical type of backend that is not bound to a specific
database, it will fail because it doesn't have a pg_proc catalog to
look up properties of the types being printed.  In general, that's
an unavoidable problem, but we can hardwire the properties of a few
builtin types in order to support utility commands.  This new
DestReceiver of type DestRemoteSimple does just that.

Tom Lane ab1f0c8225 Change representation of statement lists, and add statement location info.
This patch makes several changes that improve the consistency of
representation of lists of statements.  It's always been the case
that the output of parse analysis is a list of Query nodes, whatever
the types of the individual statements in the list.  This patch brings
similar consistency to the outputs of raw parsing and planning steps:

* The output of raw parsing is now always a list of RawStmt nodes;
the statement-type-dependent nodes are one level down from that.

* The output of pg_plan_queries() is now always a list of PlannedStmt
nodes, even for utility statements.  In the case of a utility statement,
"planning" just consists of wrapping a CMD_UTILITY PlannedStmt around
the utility node.  This list representation is now used in Portal and
CachedPlan plan lists, replacing the former convention of intermixing
PlannedStmts with bare utility-statement nodes.

Now, every list of statements has a consistent head-node type depending
on how far along it is in processing.  This allows changing many places
that formerly used generic "Node *" pointers to use a more specific
pointer type, thus reducing the number of IsA() tests and casts needed,
as well as improving code clarity.

Also, the post-parse-analysis representation of DECLARE CURSOR is changed
so that it looks more like EXPLAIN, PREPARE, etc.  That is, the contained
SELECT remains a child of the DeclareCursorStmt rather than getting flipped
around to be the other way.  It's now true for both Query and PlannedStmt
that utilityStmt is non-null if and only if commandType is CMD_UTILITY.
That allows simplifying a lot of places that were testing both fields.
(I think some of those were just defensive programming, but in many places,
it was actually necessary to avoid confusing DECLARE CURSOR with SELECT.)

Because PlannedStmt carries a canSetTag field, we're also able to get rid
of some ad-hoc rules about how to reconstruct canSetTag for a bare utility
statement; specifically, the assumption that a utility is canSetTag if and
only if it's the only one in its list.  While I see no near-term need for
relaxing that restriction, it's nice to get rid of the ad-hocery.

The API of ProcessUtility() is changed so that what it's passed is the
wrapper PlannedStmt not just the bare utility statement.  This will affect
all users of ProcessUtility_hook, but the changes are pretty trivial; see
the affected contrib modules for examples of the minimum change needed.
(Most compilers should give pointer-type-mismatch warnings for uncorrected
code.)

There's also a change in the API of ExplainOneQuery_hook, to pass through
cursorOptions instead of expecting hook functions to know what to pick.
This is needed because of the DECLARE CURSOR changes, but really should
have been done in 9.6; it's unlikely that any extant hook functions
know about using CURSOR_OPT_PARALLEL_OK.

Finally, teach gram.y to save statement boundary locations in RawStmt
nodes, and pass those through to Query and PlannedStmt nodes.  This allows
more intelligent handling of cases where a source query string contains
multiple statements.  This patch doesn't actually do anything with the
information, but a follow-on patch will.  (Passing this information through
cleanly is the true motivation for these changes; while I think this is all
good cleanup, it's unlikely we'd have bothered without this end goal.)

catversion bump because addition of location fields to struct Query
affects stored rules.

This patch is by me, but it owes a good deal to Fabien Coelho who did
a lot of preliminary work on the problem, and also reviewed the patch.

Stephen Frost 12bd7dd317 Use TSConfigRelationId in AlterTSConfiguration()
When we are altering a text search configuration, we are getting the
tuple from pg_ts_config and using its OID, so use TSConfigRelationId
when invoking any post-alter hooks and setting the object address.

Further, in the functions called from AlterTSConfiguration(), we're
saving information about the command via
EventTriggerCollectAlterTSConfig(), so we should be setting
commandCollected to true.  Also add a regression test to
test_ddl_deparse for ALTER TEXT SEARCH CONFIGURATION.

Robert Haas f0e44751d7 Implement table partitioning.
Table partitioning is like table inheritance and reuses much of the
existing infrastructure, but there are some important differences.
The parent is called a partitioned table and is always empty; it may
not have indexes or non-inherited constraints, since those make no
sense for a relation with no data of its own.  The children are called
partitions and contain all of the actual data.  Each partition has an
implicit partitioning constraint.  Multiple inheritance is not
allowed, and partitioning and inheritance can't be mixed.  Partitions
can't have extra columns and may not allow nulls unless the parent
does.  Tuples inserted into the parent are automatically routed to the
correct partition, so tuple-routing ON INSERT triggers are not needed.
Tuple routing isn't yet supported for partitions which are foreign
tables, and it doesn't handle updates that cross partition boundaries.

Currently, tables can be range-partitioned or list-partitioned.  List
partitioning is limited to a single column, but range partitioning can
involve multiple columns.  A partitioning "column" can be an
expression.

Because table partitioning is less general than table inheritance, it
is hoped that it will be easier to reason about properties of
partitions, and therefore that this will serve as a better foundation
for a variety of possible optimizations, including query planner
optimizations.  The tuple routing based which this patch does based on
the implicit partitioning constraints is an example of this, but it
seems likely that many other useful optimizations are also possible.

Robert Haas a43f1939d5 Remove or reduce verbosity of some debug messages.
The debug messages that merely print StartTransactionCommand,
CommitTransactionCommand, ProcessUtilty, or ProcessQuery with no
additional details seem to be useless.  Get rid of them.

The transaction status messages produced by ShowTransactionState are
occasionally useful, but they are extremely verbose, producing
multiple lines of log output every time they fire, which can happens
multiple times per transaction.  So, reduce the level to DEBUG5; avoid
emitting an extra line just to explain which debug point is at issue;
and tighten up the rest of the message so it doesn't use quite so much
horizontal space.

With these changes, it's possible to run a somewhat busy system with a
log level even as high as DEBUG4, whereas previously anything above
DEBUG2 would flood the log with output that probably wasn't really all
that useful.

Tom Lane ffaa44cb55 Account for catalog snapshot in PGXACT->xmin updates.
The CatalogSnapshot was not plugged into SnapshotResetXmin()'s accounting
for whether MyPgXact->xmin could be cleared or advanced.  In normal
transactions this was masked by the fact that the transaction snapshot
would be older, but during backend startup and certain utility commands
it was possible to re-use the CatalogSnapshot after MyPgXact->xmin had
been cleared, meaning that recently-deleted rows could be pruned even
though this snapshot could still see them, causing unexpected catalog
lookup failures.  This effect appears to be the explanation for a recent
failure on buildfarm member piculet.

To fix, add the CatalogSnapshot to the RegisteredSnapshots heap whenever
it is valid.

In the previous logic, it was possible for the CatalogSnapshot to remain
valid across waits for client input, but with this change that would mean
it delays advance of global xmin in cases where it did not before.  To
avoid possibly causing new table-bloat problems with clients that sit idle
for long intervals, add code to invalidate the CatalogSnapshot before
waiting for client input.  (When the backend is busy, it's unlikely that
the CatalogSnapshot would be the oldest snap for very long, so we don't
worry about forcing early invalidation of it otherwise.)

In passing, remove the CatalogSnapshotStale flag in favor of using
"CatalogSnapshot != NULL" to represent validity, as we do for the other
special snapshots in snapmgr.c.  And improve some obsolete comments.

No regression test because I don't know a deterministic way to cause this
failure.  But the stress test shown in the original discussion provokes
"cache lookup failed for relation 1255" within a few dozen seconds for me.

Back-patch to 9.4 where MVCC catalog scans were introduced.  (Note: it's
quite easy to produce similar failures with the same test case in branches
before 9.4.  But MVCC catalog scans were supposed to fix that.)

Tom Lane 2f1eaf87e8 Drop server support for FE/BE protocol version 1.0.
While this isn't a lot of code, it's been essentially untestable for
a very long time, because libpq doesn't support anything older than
protocol 2.0, and has not since release 6.3.  There's no reason to
believe any other client-side code still uses that protocol, either.

Peter Eisentraut 49eb0fd097 Add location field to DefElem
Add a location field to the DefElem struct, used to parse many utility
commands.  Update various error messages to supply error position
information.

To propogate the error position information in a more systematic way,
create a ParseState in standard_ProcessUtility() and pass that to
interested functions implementing the utility commands.  This seems
better than passing the query string and then reassembling a parse state
ad hoc, which violates the encapsulation of the ParseState type.

Tom Lane 15bc038f9b Relax transactional restrictions on ALTER TYPE ... ADD VALUE.
To prevent possibly breaking indexes on enum columns, we must keep
uncommitted enum values from getting stored in tables, unless we
can be sure that any such column is new in the current transaction.

Formerly, we enforced this by disallowing ALTER TYPE ... ADD VALUE
from being executed at all in a transaction block, unless the target
enum type had been created in the current transaction.  This patch
removes that restriction, and instead insists that an uncommitted enum
value can't be referenced unless it belongs to an enum type created
in the same transaction as the value.  Per discussion, this should be
a bit less onerous.  It does require each function that could possibly
return a new enum value to SQL operations to check this restriction,
but there aren't so many of those that this seems unmaintainable.

Tom Lane ea268cdc9a Add macros to make AllocSetContextCreate() calls simpler and safer.
I found that half a dozen (nearly 5%) of our AllocSetContextCreate calls
had typos in the context-sizing parameters.  While none of these led to
especially significant problems, they did create minor inefficiencies,
and it's now clear that expecting people to copy-and-paste those calls
accurately is not a great idea.  Let's reduce the risk of future errors
by introducing single macros that encapsulate the common use-cases.
Three such macros are enough to cover all but two special-purpose contexts;
those two calls can be left as-is, I think.

While this patch doesn't in itself improve matters for third-party
extensions, it doesn't break anything for them either, and they can
gradually adopt the simplified notation over time.

In passing, change TopMemoryContext to use the default allocation
parameters.  Formerly it could only be extended 8K at a time.  That was
probably reasonable when this code was written; but nowadays we create
many more contexts than we did then, so that it's not unusual to have a
couple hundred K in TopMemoryContext, even without considering various
dubious code that sticks other things there.  There seems no good reason
not to let it use growing blocks like most other contexts.

Back-patch to 9.6, mostly because that's still close enough to HEAD that
it's easy to do so, and keeping the branches in sync can be expected to
avoid some future back-patching pain.  The bugs fixed by these changes
don't seem to be significant enough to justify fixing them further back.

Tom Lane 9ee1cf04ab Fix TOAST access failure in RETURNING queries.
Discussion of commit 3e2f3c2e4 exposed a problem that is of longer
standing: since we don't detoast data while sticking it into a portal's
holdStore for PORTAL_ONE_RETURNING and PORTAL_UTIL_SELECT queries, and we
release the query's snapshot as soon as we're done loading the holdStore,
later readout of the holdStore can do TOAST fetches against data that can
no longer be seen by any of the session's live snapshots.  This means that
a concurrent VACUUM could remove the TOAST data before we can fetch it.
Commit 3e2f3c2e4 exposed the problem by showing that sometimes we had *no*
live snapshots while fetching TOAST data, but we'd be at risk anyway.

I believe this code was all right when written, because our management of a
session's exposed xmin was such that the TOAST references were safe until
end of transaction.  But that's no longer true now that we can advance or
clear our PGXACT.xmin intra-transaction.

To fix, copy the query's snapshot during FillPortalStore() and save it in
the Portal; release it only when the portal is dropped.  This essentially
implements a policy that we must hold a relevant snapshot whenever we
access potentially-toasted data.  We had already come to that conclusion
in other places, cf commits 08e261cbc9 and ec543db77b.

I'd have liked to add a regression test case for this, but I didn't see
a way to make one that's not unreasonably bloated; it seems to require
returning a toasted value to the client, and those will be big.

In passing, improve PortalRunUtility() so that it positively verifies
that its ending PopActiveSnapshot() call will pop the expected snapshot,
removing a rather shaky assumption about which utility commands might
do their own PopActiveSnapshot().  There's no known bug here, but now
that we're actively referencing the snapshot it's almost free to make
this code a bit more bulletproof.

We might want to consider back-patching something like this into older
branches, but it would be prudent to let it prove itself more in HEAD
beforehand.

Robert Haas c6dbf1fe79 Stop the executor if no more tuples can be sent from worker to leader.
If a Gather node has read as many tuples as it needs (for example, due
to Limit) it may detach the queue connecting it to the worker before
reading all of the worker's tuples.  Rather than let the worker
continue to generate and send all of the results, have it stop after
sending the next tuple.

More could be done here to stop the worker even quicker, but this is
about as well as we can hope to do for 9.6.

This is in response to a problem report from Andreas Seltenreich.
Commit 44339b892a should be actually be
sufficient to fix that example even without this change, but it seems
better to do this, too, since we might otherwise waste quite a large
amount of effort in one or more workers.

Tom Lane 9dd4178cec Be more predictable about reporting "lock timeout" vs "statement timeout".
If both timeout indicators are set when we arrive at ProcessInterrupts,
we've historically just reported "lock timeout".  However, some buildfarm
members have been observed to fail isolationtester's timeouts test by
reporting "lock timeout" when the statement timeout was expected to fire
first.  The cause seems to be that the process is allowed to sleep longer
than expected (probably due to heavy machine load) so that the lock
timeout happens before we reach the point of reporting the error, and
then this arbitrary tiebreak rule does the wrong thing.  We can improve
matters by comparing the scheduled timeout times to decide which error
to report.

I had originally proposed greatly reducing the 1-second window between
the two timeouts in the test cases.  On reflection that is a bad idea,
at least for the case where the lock timeout is expected to fire first,
because that would assume that it takes negligible time to get from
statement start to the beginning of the lock wait.  Thus, this patch
doesn't completely remove the risk of test failures on slow machines.
Empirically, however, the case this handles is the one we are seeing
in the buildfarm.  The explanation may be that the other case requires
the scheduler to take the CPU away from a busy process, whereas the
case fixed here only requires the scheduler to not give the CPU back
right away to a process that has been woken from a multi-second sleep
(and, perhaps, has been swapped out meanwhile).

Back-patch to 9.3 where the isolationtester timeouts test was added.

Alvaro Herrera f2fcad27d5 Support ALTER THING .. DEPENDS ON EXTENSION
This introduces a new dependency type which marks an object as depending
on an extension, such that if the extension is dropped, the object
automatically goes away; and also, if the database is dumped, the object
is included in the dump output.  Currently the grammar supports this for
indexes, triggers, materialized views and functions only, although the
utility code is generic so adding support for more object types is a
matter of touching the parser rules only.

Alvaro Herrera 473b932870 Support CREATE ACCESS METHOD
This enables external code to create access methods.  This is useful so
that extensions can add their own access methods which can be formally
tracked for dependencies, so that DROP operates correctly.  Also, having
explicit support makes pg_dump work correctly.

Currently only index AMs are supported, but we expect different types to
be added in the future.

Tom Lane 23a27b039d Widen query numbers-of-tuples-processed counters to uint64.
This patch widens SPI_processed, EState's es_processed field, PortalData's
portalPos field, FuncCallContext's call_cntr and max_calls fields,
ExecutorRun's count argument, PortalRunFetch's result, and the max number
of rows in a SPITupleTable to uint64, and deals with (I hope) all the
ensuing fallout.  Some of these values were declared uint32 before, and
others "long".

I also removed PortalData's posOverflow field, since that logic seems
pretty useless given that portalPos is now always 64 bits.

The user-visible results are that command tags for SELECT etc will
correctly report tuple counts larger than 4G, as will plpgsql's GET
GET DIAGNOSTICS ... ROW_COUNT command.  Queries processing more tuples
than that are still not exactly the norm, but they're becoming more
common.

Most values associated with FETCH/MOVE distances, such as PortalRun's count
argument and the count argument of most SPI functions that have one, remain
declared as "long".  It's not clear whether it would be worth promoting
those to int64; but it would definitely be a large dollop of additional
API churn on top of this, and it would only help 32-bit platforms which
seem relatively less likely to see any benefit.

Robert Haas 57a6a72b6b Enable parallelism for prepared statements and extended query protocol.
Parallel query can't handle running a query only partially rather than
to completion.  However, there seems to be no way to run a statement
prepared via SQL PREPARE other than to completion, so we can enable it
there without a problem.

The situation is more complicated for the extend query protocol.
libpq seems to provide no way to send an Execute message with a
non-zero rowcount, but some other client might.  If that happens, and
a parallel plan was chosen, we'll execute the parallel plan without
using any workers, which may be somewhat inefficient but should still
work.  Hopefully this won't be a problem; users can always set
max_parallel_degree=0 to avoid choosing parallel plans in the first
place.

Tom Lane 66d947b9d3 Adjust behavior of single-user -j mode for better initdb error reporting.
Previously, -j caused the entire input file to be read in and executed as
a single command string.  That's undesirable, not least because any error
causes the entire file to be regurgitated as the "failing query".  Some
experimentation suggests a better rule: end the command string when we see
a semicolon immediately followed by two newlines, ie, an empty line after
a query.  This serves nicely to break up the existing examples such as
information_schema.sql and system_views.sql.  A limitation is that it's
no longer possible to write such a sequence within a string literal or
multiline comment in a file meant to be read with -j; but there are no
instances of such a problem within the data currently used by initdb.
(If someone does make such a mistake in future, it'll be obvious because
they'll get an unterminated-literal or unterminated-comment syntax error.)
Other than that, there shouldn't be any negative consequences; you're not
forced to end statements that way, it's just a better idea in most cases.

In passing, remove src/include/tcop/tcopdebug.h, which is dead code
because it's not included anywhere, and hasn't been for more than
ten years.  One of the debug-support symbols it purported to describe
has been unreferenced for at least the same amount of time, and the
other is removed by this commit on the grounds that it was useless:
forcing -j mode all the time would have broken initdb.  The lack of
complaints about that, or about the missing inclusion, shows that
no one has tried to use TCOP_DONTUSENEWLINE in many years.

Robert Haas 1efc7e5382 Fix problems with ParamListInfo serialization mechanism.
Commit d1b7c1ffe7 introduced a mechanism
for serializing a ParamListInfo structure to be passed to a parallel
worker.  However, this mechanism failed to handle external expanded
values, as pointed out by Noah Misch.  Repair.

Moreover, plpgsql_param_fetch requires adjustment because the
serialization mechanism needs it to skip evaluating unused parameters
just as we would do when it is called from copyParamList, but params
== estate->paramLI in that case.  To fix, make the bms_is_member test
in that function unconditional.

Finally, have setup_param_list set a new ParamListInfo field,
paramMask, to the parameters actually used in the expression, so that
we don't try to fetch those that are not needed when serializing a
parameter list.  This isn't necessary for correctness, but it makes
the performance of the parallel executor code comparable to what we
do for cases involving cursors.

trying to do it only when needed.

Tom Lane b63fc28776 Add recursion depth protections to regular expression matching.
Some of the functions in regex compilation and execution recurse, and
therefore could in principle be driven to stack overflow.  The Tcl crew
has seen this happen in practice in duptraverse(), though their fix was
to put in a hard-wired limit on the number of recursive levels, which is
not too appetizing --- fortunately, we have enough infrastructure to check
the actually available stack.  Greg Stark has also seen it in other places
while fuzz testing on a machine with limited stack space.  Let's put guards
in to prevent crashes in all these places.

Since the regex code would leak memory if we simply threw elog(ERROR),
we have to introduce an API that checks for stack depth without throwing
such an error.  Fortunately that's not difficult.

Robert Haas 4a4e6893aa Glue layer to connect the executor to the shm_mq mechanism.
The shm_mq mechanism was built to send error (and notice) messages and
tuples between backends.  However, shm_mq itself only deals in raw
bytes.  Since commit 2bd9e412f9, we have
had infrastructure for one message to redirect protocol messages to a
queue and for another backend to parse them and do useful things with
them.  This commit introduces a somewhat analogous facility for tuples
by adding a new type of DestReceiver, DestTupleQueue, which writes
each tuple generated by a query into a shm_mq, and a new
TupleQueueFunnel facility which reads raw tuples out of the queue and
reconstructs the HeapTuple format expected by the executor.

The TupleQueueFunnel abstraction supports reading from multiple tuple
streams at the same time, but only in round-robin fashion.  Someone
could imaginably want other policies, but this should be good enough
to meet our short-term needs related to parallel query, and we can
always extend it later.

This also makes one minor addition to the shm_mq API that didn'
seem worth breaking out as a separate patch.

Extracted from Amit Kapila's parallel sequential scan patch.  This
code was originally written by me, and then it was revised by Amit,
and then it was revised some more by me.

Robert Haas 7aea8e4f2d Determine whether it's safe to attempt a parallel plan for a query.
Commit 924bcf4f16 introduced a framework
for parallel computation in PostgreSQL that makes most but not all
built-in functions safe to execute in parallel mode.  In order to have
parallel query, we'll need to be able to determine whether that query
contains functions (either built-in or user-defined) that cannot be
safely executed in parallel mode.  This requires those functions to be
labeled, so this patch introduces an infrastructure for that.  Some
functions currently labeled as safe may need to be revised depending on
how pending issues related to heavyweight locking under paralllelism
are resolved.

Parallel plans can't be used except for the case where the query will
run to completion.  If portal execution were suspended, the parallel
mode restrictions would need to remain in effect during that time, but
that might make other queries fail.  Therefore, this patch introduces
a framework that enables consideration of parallel plans only when it
is known that the plan will be run to completion.  This probably needs
some refinement; for example, at bind time, we do not know whether a
query run via the extended protocol will be execution to completion or
run with a limited fetch count.  Having the client indicate its
intentions at bind time would constitute a wire protocol break.  Some
contexts in which parallel mode would be safe are not adjusted by this
patch; the default is not to try parallel plans except from call sites
that have been updated to say that such plans are OK.

This commit doesn't introduce any parallel paths or plans; it just
provides a way to determine whether they could potentially be used.
I'm committing it on the theory that the remaining parallel sequential
scan patches will also get committed to this release, hopefully in the
not-too-distant future.

Tom Lane c5454f99c4 Fix subtransaction cleanup after an outer-subtransaction portal fails.
Formerly, we treated only portals created in the current subtransaction as
having failed during subtransaction abort.  However, if the error occurred
while running a portal created in an outer subtransaction (ie, a cursor
declared before the last savepoint), that has to be considered broken too.

To allow reliable detection of which ones those are, add a bookkeeping
field to struct Portal that tracks the innermost subtransaction in which
each portal has actually been executed.  (Without this, we'd end up
failing portals containing functions that had called the subtransaction,
thereby breaking plpgsql exception blocks completely.)

In addition, when we fail an outer-subtransaction Portal, transfer its
resources into the subtransaction's resource owner, so that they're
released early in cleanup of the subxact.  This fixes a problem reported by
Jim Nasby in which a function executed in an outer-subtransaction cursor
could cause an Assert failure or crash by referencing a relation created
within the inner subtransaction.

The proximate cause of the Assert failure is that AtEOSubXact_RelationCache
assumed it could blow away a relcache entry without first checking that the
entry had zero refcount.  That was a bad idea on its own terms, so add such
a check there, and to the similar coding in AtEOXact_RelationCache.  This
provides an independent safety measure in case there are still ways to
provoke the situation despite the Portal-level changes.

This has been broken since subtransactions were invented, so back-patch
to all supported branches.

Tom Lane 123c9d2fc1 Clean up icc + ia64 situation.
Some googling turned up multiple sources saying that older versions of icc
do not accept gcc-compatible asm blocks on IA64, though asm does work on
x86[_64].  This is apparently fixed as of icc version 12.0 or so, but that
doesn't help us much; if we have to carry the extra implementation anyway,
we may as well just use it for icc rather than add a compiler version test.

Hence, revert commit 2c713d6ea2 (though I
separated the icc code from the gcc code completely, producing what seems
cleaner code).  Document the state of affairs more explicitly, both in
s_lock.h and postgres.c, and make some cosmetic adjustments around the
IA64 code in s_lock.h.

Tom Lane 2c713d6ea2 Remove theoretically-unnecessary special case for icc.
Intel's icc is generally able to swallow asm blocks written for gcc.
We have a few places that don't seem to know that, though.  Experiment
with removing the special case for icc in ia64_get_bsp(); if the buildfarm
likes this, I'll try more cleanup.  This is a good test case because it
involves a "stop" notation that seems like it might not be very portable.

Heikki Linnakangas 321eed5f0f Add ALTER OPERATOR command, for changing selectivity estimator functions.
Other options cannot be changed, as it's not totally clear if cached plans
would need to be invalidated if one of the other options change. Selectivity
estimator functions only change plan costs, not correctness of plans, so
those should be safe.

Andres Freund 631d749007 Remove the new UPSERT command tag and use INSERT instead.
Previously, INSERT with ON CONFLICT DO UPDATE specified used a new
command tag -- UPSERT.  It was introduced out of concern that INSERT as
a command tag would be a misrepresentation for ON CONFLICT DO UPDATE, as
some affected rows may actually have been updated.

Alvaro Herrera noticed that the implementation of that new command tag
was incomplete; in subsequent discussion we concluded that having it
doesn't provide benefits that are in line with the compatibility breaks
it requires.

Catversion bump due to the removal of PlannedStmt->isUpsert.

Fujii Masao ecd222e770 Support VERBOSE option in REINDEX command.

Alvaro Herrera b488c580ae Allow on-the-fly capture of DDL event details
This feature lets user code inspect and take action on DDL events.
Whenever a ddl_command_end event trigger is installed, DDL actions
executed are saved to a list which can be inspected during execution of
a function attached to ddl_command_end.

The set-returning function pg_event_trigger_ddl_commands can be used to
list actions so captured; it returns data about the type of command
executed, as well as the affected object.  This is sufficient for many
uses of this feature.  For the cases where it is not, we also provide a
"command" column of a new pseudo-type pg_ddl_command, which is a
pointer to a C structure that can be accessed by C code.  The struct
contains all the info necessary to completely inspect and even
reconstruct the executed command.

There is no actual deparse code here; that's expected to come later.
What we have is enough infrastructure that the deparsing can be done in
an external extension.  The intention is that we will add some deparsing
code in a later release, as an in-core extension.

A new test module is included.  It's probably insufficient as is, but it
should be sufficient as a starting point for a more complete and
future-proof approach.

Andres Freund 168d5805e4 Add support for INSERT ... ON CONFLICT DO NOTHING/UPDATE.
The newly added ON CONFLICT clause allows to specify an alternative to
raising a unique or exclusion constraint violation error when inserting.
ON CONFLICT refers to constraints that can either be specified using a
inference clause (by specifying the columns of a unique constraint) or
by naming a unique or exclusion constraint.  DO NOTHING avoids the
constraint violation, without touching the pre-existing row.  DO UPDATE
SET ... [WHERE ...] updates the pre-existing tuple, and has access to
both the tuple proposed for insertion and the existing tuple; the
optional WHERE clause can be used to prevent an update from being
executed.  The UPDATE SET and WHERE clauses have access to the tuple
proposed for insertion using the "magic" EXCLUDED alias, and to the
pre-existing tuple using the table name or its alias.

This feature is often referred to as upsert.

This is implemented using a new infrastructure called "speculative
insertion". It is an optimistic variant of regular insertion that first
does a pre-check for existing tuples and then attempts an insert.  If a
violating tuple was inserted concurrently, the speculatively inserted
tuple is deleted and a new attempt is made.  If the pre-check finds a
matching tuple the alternative DO NOTHING or DO UPDATE action is taken.
If the insertion succeeds without detecting a conflict, the tuple is
deemed inserted.

To handle the possible ambiguity between the excluded alias and a table
named excluded, and for convenience with long relation names, INSERT
INTO now can alias its target table.

Robert Haas 924bcf4f16 Create an infrastructure for parallel computation in PostgreSQL.
This does four basic things.  First, it provides convenience routines
to coordinate the startup and shutdown of parallel workers.  Second,
it synchronizes various pieces of state (e.g. GUCs, combo CID
mappings, transaction snapshot) from the parallel group leader to the
worker processes.  Third, it prohibits various operations that would
result in unsafe changes to that state while parallelism is active.
Finally, it propagates events that would result in an ErrorResponse,
NoticeResponse, or NotifyResponse message being sent to the client
from the parallel workers back to the master, from which they can then
be sent on to the client.

Alvaro Herrera 0d83138974 Rationalize vacuuming options and parameters
We were involving the parser too much in setting up initial vacuuming
parameters.  This patch moves that responsibility elsewhere to simplify
code, and also to make future additions easier.  To do this, create a
new struct VacuumParams which is filled just prior to vacuum execution,
instead of at parse time; for user-invoked vacuuming this is set up in a
new function ExecVacuum, while autovacuum sets it up by itself.

While at it, add a new member VACOPT_SKIPTOAST to enum VacuumOption,
only set by autovacuum, which is used to disable vacuuming of the toast
table instead of the old do_toast parameter; this relieves the argument
list of vacuum() and some callees a bit.  This partially makes up for
having added more arguments in an effort to avoid having autovacuum from
constructing a VacuumStmt parse node.

Tom Lane 7b8b8a4331 Improve representation of PlanRowMark.
This patch fixes two inadequacies of the PlanRowMark representation.

First, that the original LockingClauseStrength isn't stored (and cannot be
inferred for foreign tables, which always get ROW_MARK_COPY).  Since some
PlanRowMarks are created out of whole cloth and don't actually have an
ancestral RowMarkClause, this requires adding a dummy LCS_NONE value to
enum LockingClauseStrength, which is fairly annoying but the alternatives
seem worse.  This fix allows getting rid of the use of get_parse_rowmark()
in FDWs (as per the discussion around commits 462bd95705 and
8ec8760fc8), and it simplifies some things elsewhere.

Second, that the representation assumed that all child tables in an
inheritance hierarchy would use the same RowMarkType.  That's true today
but will soon not be true.  We add an "allMarkTypes" field that identifies
the union of mark types used in all a parent table's children, and use
that where appropriate (currently, only in preprocess_targetlist()).

In passing fix a couple of minor infelicities left over from the SKIP
LOCKED patch, notably that _outPlanRowMark still thought waitPolicy
is a bool.

Catversion bump is required because the numeric values of enum
LockingClauseStrength can appear in on-disk rules.

Extracted from a much larger patch to support foreign table inheritance;
it seemed worth breaking this out, since it's a separable concern.
