particular you can now pass a ROW() construct to a function that accepts
a rowtype parameter. Internal generation of RowExprs fixes a number of
corner cases that used to not work very well, such as referencing the
whole-row result of a JOIN or subquery. This represents a further step in
the work I started a month or so back to make rowtype values into
first-class citizens.
conversion of basic ASCII letters. Remove all uses of strcasecmp and
strncasecmp in favor of new functions pg_strcasecmp and pg_strncasecmp;
remove most but not all direct uses of toupper and tolower in favor of
pg_toupper and pg_tolower. These functions use the same notions of
case folding already developed for identifier case conversion. I left
the straight locale-based folding in place for situations where we are
just manipulating user data and not trying to match it to built-in
strings --- for example, the SQL upper() function is still locale
dependent. Perhaps this will prove not to be what's wanted, but at
the moment we can initdb and pass regression tests in Turkish locale.
* ALTER ... ADD COLUMN with defaults and NOT NULL constraints works per SQL
spec. A default is implemented by rewriting the table with the new value
stored in each row.
* ALTER COLUMN TYPE. You can change a column's datatype to anything you
want, so long as you can specify how to convert the old value. Rewrites
the table. (Possible future improvement: optimize no-op conversions such
as varchar(N) to varchar(N+1).)
* Multiple ALTER actions in a single ALTER TABLE command. You can perform
any number of column additions, type changes, and constraint additions with
only one pass over the table contents.

"millennium" date part implementation in postgresql, both in the code
and the documentation, so that it conforms to the official definition.

With the previous version, the centuries and millenniums had a wrong
number and started the wrong year. Moreover century number 0, which does
not exist in reality, lasted 200 years. Also, millennium number 0 lasted
2000 years.
If you want postgresql to have it's own definition of "century" and
"millennium" that does not conform to the one of the society, just give
them another name. I would suggest "pgCENTURY" and "pgMILLENNIUM";-)
IMO, if someone may use the options, it means that postgresql is used for
historical data, so it make sense to have an historical definition. Also,
I just want to divide the year by 100 or 1000, I can do that quite easily.

in itself do much for us, except eliminate the horrid memory leak
associated with evaluation of whole-row variables. However, it lays the
groundwork for allowing composite types as table columns, and perhaps
some other useful features as well. Per my proposal of a few days ago.
so that the 'val' is computed only once, per recent discussion. The
speedup is not much when 'val' is just a simple variable, but could be
significant for larger expressions. More importantly this avoids issues
with multiple evaluations of a volatile 'val', and it allows the CASE
expression to be reverse-listed in its original form by ruleutils.c.
In particular, don't depend on strtod() to accept 'NaN' and 'Infinity'
inputs (while this is required by C99, not all platforms are compliant
with that yet). Also, don't require glibc's behavior from isinf():
it seems that on a lot of platforms isinf() does not itself distinguish
between negative and positive infinity.
types. Update the regression tests and the documentation to reflect
this. Remove the UNSAFE_FLOATS #ifdef.
This is only half the story: we still unconditionally reject
floating point operations that result in +/- infinity. See
recent thread on -hackers for more information.
any amount of leading or trailing whitespace (where "whitespace"
is defined by isspace()). This is for SQL conformance, as well
as consistency with other numeric types (e.g. oid, numeric).
Also refactor pg_atoi() to avoid looking at errno where not
necessary, and add a bunch of regression tests for the input

improve the behavior for subexpressions that don't match indexes.
vs. timestamptz. This allows use of indexes for expressions like
datecol >= date 'today' - interval '1 month'
which were formerly not indexable without casting the righthand side
down from timestamp to date.
is asked to assign a variable to itself, it will result in doing a
memcpy() on an entirely-overlapping memory range, which results in
undefined behavior according to ANSI C. That said, it is unlikely to
actually do anything bad on any sane libc, but this keeps valgrind quiet.

use maintenance_work_mem rather than work_mem as their memory limit.
Add some code to guc.c to allow these variables to be referenced by their

bug: wrong plan would have been generated for a 'special operator' used

would not have gotten into the list of quals to recheck. This bug is
only latent because at present the special-operator code could never
trigger on a join qual, but sooner or later someone will want to do it.
conditions is overkill; set_union() does the job about as well, and
much more efficiently. Furthermore this avoids assuming that
canonicalize_qual() will check for duplicate clauses at all, which
it may not always do.
about whether it is applied before or after eval_const_expressions().
I believe there were some corner cases where the system would fail to
recognize that a partial index is applicable because of the previous
inconsistency. Store normal rather than 'implicit AND' representations
of constraints and index predicates in the catalogs.

Interval values can now be written as ISO 8601 time intervals, using
the "Format with time-unit designators". This format always starts with
the character 'P', followed by a string of values followed
by single character time-unit designators. A 'T' separates the date and
time parts of the interval.

which had been unintentionally broken by recent changes to tighten up the
DateStyle rules for all-numeric date input. Add documentation and
regression tests for this, too.
pghackers proposal of 8-Nov. All the existing cross-type comparison
operators (int2/int4/int8 and float4/float8) have appropriate support.
The original proposal of storing the right-hand-side datatype as part of
the primary key for pg_amop and pg_amproc got modified a bit in the event;
it is easier to store zero as the 'default' case and only store a nonzero
when the operator is actually cross-type. Along the way, remove the
long-since-defunct bigbox_ops operator class.
Remove the 'strategy map' code, which was a large amount of mechanism
that no longer had any use except reverse-mapping from procedure OID to
strategy number. Passing the strategy number to the index AM in the
first place is simpler and faster.
This is a preliminary step in planned support for cross-datatype index
operations. I'm committing it now since the ScanKeyEntryInitialize()
API change touches quite a lot of files, and I want to commit those
changes before the tree drifts under me.

way too much on knowledge of plan structure, and yet still would fail
if the generated query got rewritten by rules.

This solves a bug reported by Wade Klaver, wherein triggers fired as a
result of RI cascade updates could misbehave.
recent gripe, I discovered not one but two undocumented, undesirable
behaviors of glibc's mktime. So, stop using it entirely, and always
rely on inversion of localtime() to determine the local time zone.
It's not even very much slower, as it turns out that mktime (at least
in the glibc implementation) also does repeated reverse-conversions.
SQLSTATE error codes required by SQL99 (invalid format, datetime field
overflow, interval field overflow, invalid time zone displacement value).
Also emit a HINT about DateStyle in cases where it seems appropriate.

perform a timestamp-to-date coercion. Instead both routines share a
subroutine that delivers the parsing result as a struct tm. This avoids
problems with timezone dependency of to_date's result, and should be
at least marginally faster too.
be anything yielding an array of the proper kind, not only sub-ARRAY[]
constructs; do subscript checking at runtime not parse time. Also,
adjust array_cat to make array || array comply with the SQL99 spec.

leaks in array indexing support. The parser's equality_oper and ordering_oper
routines also use the cache. Change the operator search algorithms to look
for appropriate btree or hash index opclasses, instead of assuming operators
named '<' or '=' have the right semantics. (ORDER BY ASC/DESC now also look
at opclasses, instead of assuming '<' and '>' are the right things.) Add
several more index opclasses so that there is no regression in functionality
for base datatypes. initdb forced due to catalog additions.

to be accurate in ruleutils, either. This fixes bug reported by
Donald Fraser, in which renaming a column referenced in a rule did not
work very well.

heuristic determination of day vs month in date/time input. Add the
ability to specify that input is interpreted as yy-mm-dd order (which
formerly worked, but only for yy greater than 31). DateStyle's input
component now has the preferred spellings DMY, MDY, or YMD; the older
keywords European and US are now aliases for the first two of these.

for the sign of timezone offsets, ie, positive is east from UTC. These
were previously out of step with other operations that accept or show
timezones, such as I/O of timestamptz values.
ANYELEMENT. The effect is to postpone typechecking of the function

yield boolean; the result of the construct is the OR or AND of the

Regression tests for IPv6 operations added.
Documentation updated to document IPv6 bits.
Stop treating IPv4 as an "unsigned int" and IPv6 as an array of
characters. Instead, always use the array of characters so we
can have one function fits all. This makes bitncmp(), addressOK(),
and several other functions "just work" on both address families.
add family() function which returns integer 4 or 6 for IPv4 or
IPv6. (See examples below) Note that to add this new function
you will need to dump/initdb/reload or find the correct magic
to add the function to the postgresql function catalogs.
IPv4 addresses always sort before IPv6.
On disk we use AF_INET for IPv4, and AF_INET+1 for IPv6 addresses.
This prevents the need for a dump and reload, but lets IPv6 parsing
work on machines without AF_INET6.
To select all IPv4 addresses from a table:
select * from foo where family(addr) = 4 ...
Order by and other bits should all work.

specific hash functions used by hash indexes, rather than the old
not-datatype-aware ComputeHashFunc routine. This makes it safe to do
hash joining on several datatypes that previously couldn't use hashing.
The sets of datatypes that are hash indexable and hash joinable are now
exactly the same, whereas before each had some that weren't in the other.
I'd placed the check for newly created matching pk rows for on update no
action earlier than it needed to be so that it'd check even when the key
values hadn't changed. This patch moves it to after checking for NULLs
in the old row and comparing the values since the select's probably more
expensive.

of an index can now be a computed expression instead of a simple variable.
Restrictions on expressions are the same as for predicates (only immutable
functions, no sub-selects). This fixes problems recently introduced with
inlining SQL functions, because the inlining transformation is applied to
both expression trees so the planner can still match them up. Along the
way, improve efficiency of handling index predicates (both predicates and
index expressions are now cached by the relcache) and fix 7.3 oversight
that didn't record dependencies of predicate expressions.
blanks, in hopes of reducing the surprise factor for newbies. Remove
redundant operators for VARCHAR (it depends wholly on TEXT operations now).
Clean up resolution of ambiguous operators/functions to avoid surprising
choices for domains: domains are treated as equivalent to their base types
and binary-coercibility is no longer considered a preference item when
choosing among multiple operators/functions. IsBinaryCoercible now correctly
reflects the notion that you need *only* relabel the type to get from type
A to type B: that is, a domain is binary-coercible to its base type, but
not vice versa. Various marginal cleanup, including merging the essentially
duplicate resolution code in parse_func.c and parse_oper.c. Improve opr_sanity
regression test to understand about binary compatibility (using pg_cast),
and fix a couple of small errors in the catalogs revealed thereby.
Restructure "special operator" handling to fetch operators via index opclasses
rather than hardwiring assumptions about names (cleans up the pattern_ops
stuff a little).
single-byte encodings, and a direct C implementation of the single-argument
forms (where spaces are always what gets trimmed). This is in preparation
for using rtrim1() as the bpchar-to-text cast operator, but is a useful
performance improvement even if we decide not to do that.
Ross Reedstrom, a couple months back) and to detect timezones that are
using leap-second timekeeping. The unknown-zone-name test is pretty
heuristic and ugly, but it seems better than the old behavior of just
switching to GMT given a bad name. Also make DecodePosixTimezone() a
tad more robust.
