c52aab5525 Get rid of pgpass_from_client tracking inside libpq --- given the conclusion
that presence of the password in the conninfo string must be checked *before*
risking a connection attempt, there is no point in checking it afterwards.
This makes the specification of PQconnectionUsedPassword() a bit simpler
and perhaps more generally useful, too.

cae7ad906a Fix dblink_connect() so that it verifies that a password is supplied in the
conninfo string *before* trying to connect to the remote server, not after.
As pointed out by Marko Kreen, in certain not-very-plausible situations
this could result in sending a password from the postgres user's .pgpass file,
or other places that non-superusers shouldn't have access to, to an
untrustworthy remote server. The cleanest fix seems to be to expose libpq's
conninfo-string-parsing code so that dblink can check for a password option
without duplicating the parsing logic.

c91ff03a06 Make libpq on windows not try to send chunks larger than 64Kb.
Per Microsoft knowledge base article Q201213, early versions of
Windows fail when we do this. Later versions of Windows appear
to have a higher limit than 64Kb, but do still fail on large
sends, so we unconditionally limit it for all versions.

Patch from Tom Lane.

02ac305405 Tweak libpq to avoid crashing due to incorrect buffer size calculation when
we are on a 64-bit machine (ie, size_t is wider than int) and someone passes
in a query string that approaches or exceeds INT_MAX bytes. Also, just for
paranoia's sake, guard against similar overflows in sizing the input buffer.

The backend will not in the foreseeable future be prepared to send or receive
strings exceeding 1GB, so I didn't take the more invasive step of switching
all the buffer index variables from int to size_t; though someday we might
want to do that.

I have a suspicion that this is not the only such bug in libpq, but this
fix is enough to take care of the crash reported by Francisco Reyes.

1d89026788 Implement error checking for pthreads calls in thread-safe mode. They really
should always succeed, but in the likely event of a failure we would
previously fall through *without locking* - the new code will exit(1).

Printing the error message on stderr will not work for all applications, but
it's better than nothing at all - and our API doesn't provide a way to return
the error to the caller.

46e76373ec Implement a few changes to how shared libraries and dynamically loadable
modules are built. Foremost, it creates a solid distinction between these two
types of targets based on what had already been implemented and duplicated in
ad hoc ways before. Specifically,

- Dynamically loadable modules no longer get a soname. The numbers previously
set in the makefiles were dummy numbers anyway, and the presence of a soname
upset a few packaging tools, so it is nicer not to have one.

- The cumbersome detour taken on installation (build a libfoo.so.0.0.0 and
then override the rule to install foo.so instead) is removed.

- Lots of duplicated code simplified.

3405f2b925 Use error message wordings for permissions checks on .pgpass and SSL private
key files that are similar to the one for the postmaster's data directory
permissions check. (I chose to standardize on that one since it's the most
heavily used and presumably best-wordsmithed by now.) Also eliminate explicit
tests on file ownership in these places, since the ensuing read attempt must
fail anyway if it's wrong, and there seems no value in issuing the same error
message for distinct problems. (But I left in the explicit ownership test in
postmaster.c, since it had its own error message anyway.) Also be more
specific in the documentation's descriptions of these checks. Per a gripe
from Kevin Hunter.

70066eb1a1 Insert into getCopyDataMessage() the same logic that already existed in the
main code path for enlarging libpq's input buffer in one swoop when needing to
read a long data message. Without this, the code will double the buffer size,
read more data, notice it still hasn't got the whole message, and repeat till
it finally has a large enough buffer. Which wastes a lot of data-moving
effort and also memory (since malloc probably can't do anything very useful
with the freed-up smaller buffers).  Not sure why this wasn't there already;
certainly the COPY data path is a place where we're quite likely to see long
data messages. I'm not backpatching though, since this is just a marginal
performance issue rather than a real bug.

8468146b03 Fix the inadvertent libpq ABI breakage discovered by Martin Pitt: the
renumbering of encoding IDs done between 8.2 and 8.3 turns out to break 8.2
initdb and psql if they are run with an 8.3beta1 libpq.so. For the moment
we can rearrange the order of enum pg_enc to keep the same number for
everything except PG_JOHAB, which isn't a problem since there are no direct
references to it in the 8.2 programs anyway. (This does force initdb
unfortunately.)

Going forward, we want to fix things so that encoding IDs can be changed
without an ABI break, and this commit includes the changes needed to allow
libpq's encoding IDs to be treated as fully independent of the backend's.
The main issue is that libpq clients should not include pg_wchar.h or
otherwise assume they know the specific values of libpq's encoding IDs,
since they might encounter version skew between pg_wchar.h and the libpq.so
they are using. To fix, have libpq officially export functions needed for
encoding name<=>ID conversion and validity checking; it was doing this
anyway unofficially.

It's still the case that we can't renumber backend encoding IDs until the
next bump in libpq's major version number, since doing so will break the
8.2-era client programs. However the code is now prepared to avoid this
type of problem in future.

Note that initdb is no longer a libpq client: we just pull in the two
source files we need directly. The patch also fixes a few places that
were being sloppy about checking for an unrecognized encoding name.

1e22e60505 Patch of Win32 Encoding problem for server messages using
FormatMessage() (This should have been in 8.2.0, patched to 8.2.X and

I think this problem to be complex....
http://archives.postgresql.org/pgsql-hackers/2006-11/msg00042.php

FormatMessage of windows cannot consider the encoding of the database.
However, I should try the solution now. It is necessary to clear the
problem.

Multi character-code exists together in message and log. It doesn't
consider
the data base encoding that the user intended....

The user in multi-byte country can try this.

515112f9d4 Modify libpq's string-escaping routines to be aware of encoding considerations
and standard_conforming_strings. The encoding changes are needed for proper
escaping in multibyte encodings, as per the SQL-injection vulnerabilities
noted in CVE-2006-2313 and CVE-2006-2314. Concurrent fixes are being applied
to the server to ensure that it rejects queries that may have been corrupted
by attempted SQL injection, but this merely guarantees that unpatched clients
will fail rather than allow injection. An actual fix requires changing the
client-side code. While at it we have also fixed these routines to understand
about standard_conforming_strings, so that the upcoming changeover to SQL-spec
string syntax can be somewhat transparent to client code.

Since the existing API of PQescapeString and PQescapeBytea provides no way to
inform them which settings are in use, these functions are now deprecated in
favor of new functions PQescapeStringConn and PQescapeByteaConn. The new
functions take the PGconn to which the string will be sent as an additional
parameter, and look inside the connection structure to determine what to do.
So as to provide some functionality for clients using the old functions,
libpq stores the latest encoding and standard_conforming_strings values
received from the backend in static variables, and the old functions consult
these variables. This will work reliably in clients using only one Postgres
connection at a time, or even multiple connections if they all use the same
encoding and string syntax settings; which should cover many practical
scenarios.

Clients that use homebrew escaping methods, such as PHP's addslashes()
function or even hardwired regexp substitution, will require extra effort
to fix :-(. It is strongly recommended that such code be replaced by use of
PQescapeStringConn/PQescapeByteaConn if at all feasible.

f1b3d5b02d Remove unused function SSL_CTX_set_tmp_dh_callback() from libpq:
In the SSL code in libpq it does some processing with DH parameters:

SSL_CTX_set_tmp_dh_callback()

This function is marked as server use only[1], the client always uses
the DH parameters in the server, so all the code in the client dealing
with the DH parameters is useless. This patch removes it.

It's not clear why the code was added in the first place, it's been
there almost since the beginning[2]. At the time there was a suggestion
of merging the front-end and backend SSL code, but looking at the
changes since, that seems unlikely.

As a further example, the s_server program allows you to specify DH
params, but s_client doesn't. In the GnuTLS documentation under
gnutls_dh_params_generate2() it says[3]:

Also note that the DH parameters are only useful to servers. Since
clients use the parameters sent by the server, it's of no use to call
  this in client side.

While playing with this patch under 8.1.2 at home I discovered a
mistake in how I manually applied one of the hunks to fe-auth.c.
Basically, the base code had changed and so the patch needed to be
modified slightly. This is because the code no longer either has a
freeable pointer under 'name' or has 'name' as NULL.

The attached patch correctly frees the string from pg_krb5_authname
(where it had been strdup'd) if and only if pg_krb5_authname returned
a string (as opposed to falling through and having name be set using
name = pw->name;). Also added a comment to this effect.

6f7fc0bade Cause initdb to create a third standard database "postgres", which
unlike template0 and template1 does not have any special status in
terms of backend functionality. However, all external utilities such
as createuser and createdb now connect to "postgres" instead of
template1, and the documentation is changed to encourage people to use
"postgres" instead of template1 as a play area. This should fix some
longstanding gotchas involving unexpected propagation of database
objects by createdb (when you used template1 without understanding
the implications), as well as ameliorating the problem that CREATE
DATABASE is unhappy if anyone else is connected to template1.

a2fb7b8a1f Adjust lo_open() so that specifying INV_READ without INV_WRITE creates
a descriptor that uses the current transaction snapshot, rather than
SnapshotNow as it did before (and still does if INV_WRITE is set).
This means pg_dump will now dump a consistent snapshot of large object
contents, as it never could do before. Also, add a lo_create() function
that is similar to lo_creat() but allows the desired OID of the large
object to be specified. This will simplify pg_restore considerably
(but I'll fix that in a separate commit).

72c53ac3a7 Allow kerberos name and username case sensitivity to be specified from
postgresql.conf.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's an updated version of the patch, with the following changes:

1) No longer uses "service name" as "application version". It's instead
hardcoded as "postgres". It could be argued that this part should be
backpatched to 8.0, but it doesn't make a big difference until you can
start changing it with GUC / connection parameters. This change only
affects kerberos 5, not 4.

2) Now downcases kerberos usernames when the client is running on win32.

3) Adds guc option for "krb_caseins_users" to make the server ignore
case mismatch which is required by some KDCs such as Active Directory.
Off by default, per discussion with Tom. This change only affects
kerberos 5, not 4.

4) Updated so it doesn't conflict with the rendevouz/bonjour patch
already in ;-)

9df3086972 Cause libpq and ecpg libraries to be built as proper shared libraries
(.dylib format) on Mac OS X, while not messing up loadable modules for
the backend (which are the same kind of animal as a shared library on
every other platform, but not here). Also get the naming convention
to match OS X practice, viz libFOO.version.so not libFOO.so.version.
In support of that last, refactor code in Makefile.shlib to make it
easier to have platform-specific shlib naming conventions.
This patch is loosely based on the Fink project's current postgresql.patch.
Tested by yours truly on OS X 10.3.4; does anyone have 10.2.* to check
it on?

6cc4175b25 Attached is a patch that takes care of the PATHSEP issue. I made a more
extensive change then what was suggested. I found the file path.c that
contained a lot of "Unix/Windows" agnostic functions so I added a function
there instead and removed the PATHSEP declaration in exec.c altogether. All
to keep things from scattering all over the code.

I also took the liberty of changing the name of the functions
"first_path_sep" and "last_path_sep". Where I come from (and I'm apparently
not alone given the former macro name PATHSEP), they should be called
"first_dir_sep" and "last_dir_sep". The new function I introduced, that
actually finds path separators, is now the "first_path_sep". The patch
contains changes on all affected places of course.

I also changed the documentation on dynamic_library_path to reflect the
chagnes.

the four functions.

> Also, please justify the temp-related changes. I was not aware that we
> had any breakage there.

patch-tmp-schema.txt contains the following bits:

*) Changes pg_namespace_aclmask() so that the superuser is always able
to create objects in the temp namespace.
*) Changes pg_namespace_aclmask() so that if this is a temp namespace,
objects are only allowed to be created in the temp namespace if the
user has TEMP privs on the database. This encompasses all object
creation, not just TEMP tables.
*) InitTempTableNamespace() checks to see if the current user, not the
session user, has access to create a temp namespace.

The first two changes are necessary to support the third change. Now
it's possible to revoke all temp table privs from non-super users and
limiting all creation of temp tables/schemas via a function that's
executed with elevated privs (security definer). Before this change,
it was not possible to have a setuid function to create a temp
table/schema if the session user had no TEMP privs.

patch-area-path.txt contains:

*) Can now determine the area of a closed path.

patch-dfmgr.txt contains:

*) Small tweak to add the library path that's being expanded.

I was using $lib/foo.so and couldn't easily figure out what the error
message, "invalid macro name in dynamic library path" meant without
looking through the source code. With the path in there, at least I
know where to start looking in my config file.

the straight locale-based folding in place for situations where we are
just manipulating user data and not trying to match it to built-in
strings --- for example, the SQL upper() function is still locale
dependent. Perhaps this will prove not to be what's wanted, but at
the moment we can initdb and pass regression tests in Turkish locale.

53cd7cd8a9 Make a separate win32 debug DLL along with the non-debug version:
Currently, src/interfaces/libpq/win32.mak builds a statically-linked
library "libpq.lib", a debug dll "libpq.dll", import library for the
debug dll "libpqdll.lib", a release dll "libpq.dll", import library for
the release dll "libpqdll.lib". To avoid naming clashes, I would make
the debug dll and import libraries "libpqd.dll" and "libpqddll.lib".

Basically, the debug build uses the cl flags: "/MDd /D _DEBUG", and the
release build uses the cl flags "/MD /D NDEBUG". Usually the debug
build has a "D" suffix on the file name, so for example:

libpqd.dll libpq, debug build
libpqd.lib libpq, debug build, import library
libpq.dll libpq, release build
libpq.lib libpq, release build, import library

e5e5a323ca Briefly,
* configure + Makefile changes
 * shared memory attaching in EXEC_BACKEND case (+ minor fix for apparent
cygwin bug under cygwin/EXEC_BACKEND case only)
 * PATH env var separator differences
 * missing win32 rand functions added
 * placeholder replacements for sync etc under port.h

To those who are really interested, and there are a few of you: the attached
patch + file will allow the source base to be compiled (and, for some
definition, "run") under MingW, with the following caveats (I wanted to
first properly fix all but the last of these, but y'all won't quit asking
for a patch :-):

        * child death: SIGCHLD not yet sent, so as a minimum, you'll need to
put in some sort of delay after StartupDatabase, and handle setting
StartupPID to 0 etc (ie. the stuff the reaper() signal function is supposed
to do)

        * dirmod.c: comment out the elog calls

        * dfmgr.c: some hackage required to substitute_libpath_macro

        * slru/xact.c: comment out the errno checking after the readdir
(fixed by next version of MingW)

Again, this is only if you *really* want to see postgres compile and start,
and is a nice leg-up for working on the other Win32 TODO list items. Just
don't expect too much else from it at this point...

c01641f8ae libpq failed to cope with COPY FROM STDIN if the command was issued
via extended query protocol, because it sends Sync right after Execute
without realizing that the command to be executed is COPY. There seems
to be no reasonable way for it to realize that, either, so the best fix
seems to be to make the backend ignore Sync during copy-in mode. Bit of
a wart on the protocol, but little alternative. Also, libpq must send
another Sync after terminating the COPY, if the command was issued via
Execute.

9df48371c2 here are the patches for psql on Win32:
psql4win32.patch - changes in the psql source code
  psql-ref.patch - changes in the documentation psql-ref.sgml
                      (for new builtin variable WIN32_CONSOLE)

To apply them use "patch -p 1" in the root directory of the
postgres source directory.

These patches fix the following problems of psql on Win32
(all changes only have effect #ifdef WIN32):

  a) Problem: Static library libpq.a did not work
     Solution: Added WSAStartup() in fe-connect.c

  b) Problem: Secret Password was echoed by psql
Solution: Password echoing disabled in sprompt.c

  c) Problem: 8bit characters were displayed/interpreted wrong in psql
This is due to the fact that the Win32 "console" uses a
different encoding than the rest of the Windows system
Solution: Introduced a new psql variable WIN32_CONSOLE
When set with "\set WIN32_console", the function OemToChar()
is applied after reading input and CharToOem() before
               displaying Output

397831e103 At long last I put together a patch to support 4 client SSL negotiation
modes (and replace the requiressl boolean). The four options were first
spelled out by Magnus Hagander <mha@sollentuna.net> on 2000-08-23 in email
to pgsql-hackers, archived here:

http://archives.postgresql.org/pgsql-hackers/2000-08/msg00639.php

My original less-flexible patch and the ensuing thread are archived at:

http://dbforums.com/t623845.html

Attached is a new patch, including documentation.

To sum up, there's a new client parameter "sslmode" and environment
variable "PGSSLMODE", with these options:

sslmode description
------- -----------
disable Unencrypted non-SSL only
allow Negotiate, prefer non-SSL
prefer Negotiate, prefer SSL (default)
require Require SSL

The only change to the server is a new pg_hba.conf line type,
"hostnossl", for specifying connections that are not allowed to use SSL
(for example, to prevent servers on a local network from accidentally
using SSL and wasting cycles). Thus the 3 pg_hba.conf line types are:

pg_hba.conf line types
----------------------
host applies to either SSL or regular connections
hostssl applies only to SSL connections
hostnossl applies only to regular connections

These client and server options, the postgresql.conf ssl = false option,
and finally the possibility of compiling with no SSL support at all,
make quite a range of combinations to test. I threw together a test
script to try many of them out. It's in a separate tarball with its
config files, a patch to psql so it'll announce SSL connections even in
absence of a tty, and the test output. The test is especially informative
when run on the same tty the postmaster was started on, so the FATAL:
errors during negotiation are interleaved with the psql client output.

I saw Tom write that new submissions for 7.4 have to be in before midnight
local time, and since I'm on the east coast in the US, this just makes it
in before the bell. :)

4e1f986098 I found the libpq function PGunescapeBytea a little slow. It was taking a
minute and a half to decode a 500Kb on a fairly fast machine. I think the
culprit is sscanf.

I attach a patch that replaces the function with one used to perform the same
task in pyPgSQL (a Python interface to PostgreSQL). This code was written by
Billy Allie, author of pyPgSQL. I've changed a few variable names to match
those in the original code and removed a bit of Pythonness.

Billy has kindly looked at the code and points out that it is slightly
stricter than the original implementation and if it encounters an invalid
bytea such as '\12C' it drops the unescape '\' and outputs '12C'.

The code is licensed by the author under a BSD license.

I've performed limited testing of the function by putting JPEGs into
PostgreSQL, extracting them using them using the new function and diffing
against the original files.

The new function is significantly faster on my machine with the JPEGs being
decoded in less than a second. I attach a modified libpq example program that
I used for my testing.

6bdb7aa4db libpq can now talk to either 3.0 or 2.0 protocol servers. It first tries
protocol 3, then falls back to 2 if postmaster rejects the startup packet
with an old-format error message. A side benefit of the rewrite is that
SSL-encrypted connections can now be made without blocking. (I think,
anyway, but do not have a good way to test.)

9cbaf72177 In the continuing saga of FE/BE protocol revisions, add reporting of
initial values and runtime changes in selected parameters. This gets
rid of the need for an initial 'select pg_client_encoding()' query in
libpq, bringing us back to one message transmitted in each direction
for a standard connection startup. To allow server version to be sent
using the same GUC mechanism that handles other parameters, invent the
concept of a never-settable GUC parameter: you can 'show server_version'
but it's not settable by any GUC input source. Create 'lc_collate' and
'lc_ctype' never-settable parameters so that people can find out these
settings without need for pg_controldata. (These side ideas were all
discussed some time ago in pgsql-hackers, but not yet implemented.)

have length words. COPY OUT reimplemented per new protocol: it doesn't
need \. anymore, thank goodness. COPY BINARY to/from frontend works,
at least as far as the backend is concerned --- libpq's PQgetline API
is not up to snuff, and will have to be replaced with something that is
null-safe. libpq uses message length words for performance improvement
(no cycles wasted rescanning long messages), but not yet for error
recovery.

b56af49849 The second was that renegotiation was just plain broken. I can't
believe I didn't notice this before -- once 64k was sent to/from the
server the client would crash. Basicly, in 7.3 the server SSL code set
the initial state to "about to renegotiate" without actually starting
the renegotiation. In addition, the server and client didn't properly
handle the SSL_ERROR_WANT_(READ|WRITE) error. This is fixed in the
second patch.

6ccb5aebad I was playing around with 7.3.1 and found some more SSL problems. The
first, that I missed when checking over 7.3.1, was that the client
method was switched to SSLv23 along with the server. The SSLv23 client
method does SSLv2 by default, but can also understand SSLv3. In our
situation the SSLv2 backwords compatibility is really only needed on the
server. This is the first patch.

The last thing is that I found a way for the server to understand SSLv2
HELLO messages (sent by pre-7.3 clients) but then get them to talk
SSLv3. This is the last one.
